What's Hot Top Fiber Optic Fusion Splicers

If you are in the market for a fusion splicer, this article will help you decide which type of fusion splicer is best suited to your needs.

If you are new to fusion splicing, here’s a quick overview: A fusion splicer is a precision machine used by fiber optic technicians to weld or “fuse” two fibers together. Fusion splicing is used for repairing broken fiber, attaching connectorized pigtails, adding fiber-to-fiber extensions for long hauls, and terminating fiber with Splice-On Connectors (SOC’s).

A fusion splicer produces an electric arc that is hotter than the surface of the sun. Fusing at such high temperatures produces a splice that is so precise that optical signals travel through them with negligible signal loss.

Splicer Evolution Fiber alignment is a key consideration when choosing a fusion splicer. Precision alignment must be achieved in order to obtain a quality splice. This is especially true when splicing singlemode fiber, which has a very small core diameter.

Full Size Vs. Handheld

Full size fusion splicers are typically larger than handheld models and have a flat bottom that provides a stable platform for fusion splicing, especially for

production environments. Full size models can be powered through AC current, and DC battery models are also available. Full size fusion splicers may incorporate more features than handheld devices, although this is not necessarily the case.

Handheld models are very compact and portable, and they are usually powered by a rechargeable battery. They are ideal for aerial applications, working in confined spaces, or anywhere AC power is not available. Hand held splicers are popular for FTTx, LAN, backbone and long haul installations. Some hand held units have a wide flat base, enabling them to be used as benchtop units as well. Performance of a good handheld fusion splicer can be on a par with full size models.

Advances in Handheld Units Until recently, the relatively high cost of a $17,000 to $23,000 core alignment fusion splicer had precluded the adoption of splicing as a preferred termination option in much of the enterprise network, as well as in many FTTx applications. Manufacturers responded to the needs of the marketplace by developing lower cost splicers with application-specific features, minus unnecessary bells and whistles. The industry also witnessed the introduction of new carrier-class handheld splicers, developed for the lower fiber count FTTP/FTTH network initiatives, restoration, and the specific needs of the evolving local area network (LAN).

Depending upon the model, today’s handheld fusion splicers may feature Dual Camera Splice Screening (DCSS) technology, Adjustable Position Monitors, Splice Estimation and more.

Most of the new handheld units are easy to use and can produce impressive results. For example, handheld fusion splicers have a typical splice time of < 13 seconds for singlemode and multimode fiber.

Fusion splicing has become the preferred splicing and termination method among a growing number of network contractors and technicians. Fusion splicing yields the best insertion and return losses among various field connectorization techniques and it is a skill that is relatively easy to learn. In terms of minimizing optical loss, fusion splicing is far superior to “mechanical” splicing and “quick-term” connectors, which rely on grippers and other mechanical means to attach fibers together.

Tools of the Trade Precision Cleaver - Fusion splicing requires the use a precision cleaver, as opposed to a less expensive “field cleaver” (beaver cleaver) that is sometimes used to prepare fiber for mechanical splicing.

A good precision cleaver will produce a 90 degree cleave that is perpendicular to the fiber endface.

Precision cleavers can be purchased alone or as part of a fusion splicer kit that can include a fusion splicer, precision cleaver and other fusion splicing tools and accessories.

Fiber Strippers - Stripping optical fiber involves removing the 900µm tight buffer, followed by the 250µm acrylate coating. To reduce the chance of damaging the fiber, use a quality stripping tool that is specifically designed for stripping optical fiber.

Cleaning Supplies - With today’s tight loss budgets, it is important to ensure that fiber endface contamination does not contribute to optical loss. Use cleaning supplies that are made specifically for optical fiber.

Other Splicer Considerations Heat Shrink Speed – The speed at which different splicers fuse fibers together doesn’t vary by very much. What tends to slow down splicing work is the time required for heat-shrinking the splice protection sleeve. If you do a lot of fusion splices, you’ll probably want a splicer that offers a dual heat shrink oven, or a fast single heat oven. You may even consider a standalone heat sleeve oven to increase efficiency.

Splice-On Connectors (SOC’s) Fulfilling a Need Prior to the advent of SOC’s, there were two principal ways that installers could achieve low loss terminations in the field and each of these methods had disadvantages: Hand Polishing Connectors – One of the first approaches adopted by installers, which is still being done today, is to hand-polish epoxy style connectors in the field. A drawback to this approach is that hand polishing connectors properly requires considerable time and training.

Information Display – A good fusion splicer will provide you with important splicer information such as system status, splice loss values, diagnostics, maintenance information, arc test results, help menus and more. Choose a fusion splicer that has a display screen that is easy to read under various lighting conditions.

Software Upgrades – New optical fibers sometimes come along that require that you to change the settings on your fusion splicer to accommodate them. Some fusion splicers offer software upgrades that will do this for you.

Fusion Splicing Connectorized Pigtails - As fusion splicers became more compact and affordable, installers began using factory-polished connectors that could be purchased with attached pigtails.

The pigtail enabled the installer to fusion-splice the connector to the field fiber. Compared to hand polishing connectors, this approach was much faster and required less skill.

However, a fusion-spliced pigtail requires a splice protection sleeve, which typically has to be housed in an external splice tray. This arrangement can take up a lot of rack space and otherwise complicate cable management.

SOC’s - Problems Solved When the innovative Splice-On Connector (SOC) was introduced a number of years ago it provided a simple, elegant solution that solved all of the fore mentioned problems.

The SOC concept uses a fusion splicer to fuse the field fiber directly to a pre-polished fiber stub contained inside the SOC connector.

Advantages of SOC’s include: • Quick fiber termination • Simplified cable management • Saves rack space – no splice trays required

necessarily have to buy a new fusion splicer just to use SOC’s. Many splicer manufacturers offer removable splice holders that enable SOC’s to be used with some of their earlier models.

Fusion Splicing Tips Keep It Clean - Keeping your fusion splicer clean, calibrated and otherwise in good repair is vital to achieving a good splice. Electrodes, camera lenses and mirrors deserve special attention. Clean the mirrors and camera lenses with cleaning solution and a foam swab. Do not use a cotton swab because that will leave cotton fibers behind. Refer to your owner’s manual for cleaning and maintenance instructions specific to your machine.

Be Gentle - Prior to fusion splicing, fiber coatings must be stripped away. To reduce the chance of damaging the fiber when stripping, strip off coatings in a series of short segments. This will reduce the force required to remove these coatings.

Perform “Arc Tests” – Do this prior to every splicing session and when changing work environments.

Replace Splicer Electrodes – Do this at the scheduled time, according to the manufacturer’s recommendation. The fusion splicer will keep track of the number of splices and alert you when the electrodes should be replaced.

Troubleshooting – When problems occur when fusion splicing, the last thing that you should do is change the parameters of your fusion splicer. First, look for more obvious causes, such as sooty or worn electrodes, poor cleaves, dirt on the fiber or tools, etc.

Fusing two fibers from different manufacturers can sometimes be a challenge due to slight differences in glass composition.

If the process of elimination doesn’t identify your problem, you can then try adjusting settings on your fusion splicer. Record your existing settings so that you can return to them if necessary.

Stay Sharp – Consider replacing the blades on your cleaver sooner than recommended by the manufacturer. This will help ensure that you are achieving the best cleaves possible from your unit.

A fusion splicer contains two electrodes, each of which is tapered to a point. The tapered ends allow for precise placement of the electric arc that fuses the two fibers together. To ensure quality splices, keep electrodes clean and replace them as necessary.

The phrase “v-groove” can be confusing when describing different types of fusion splicers. The following will set the record straight: V-Groove Fusion Splicer - Uses a v-groove mechanism to hold fibers and to align the fibers for fusion splicing.

Core Alignment Fusion Splicer - Uses a v-groove mechanism, but as a fiber holder only. Actual fiber alignment is achieved by the more accurate “core alignment” process.

The small footprint and light weight of handheld fusion splicers make them perfect when working in tight spaces within equipment closets and enclosures. Also, the portability of these battery-powered devices make them ideal for restoration work.

Product Description Specialty optical fibers have been key elements in WDM components and modules. Advanced fiber designs will further improve component performance, enhance reliability, simplify manufacturing processes and reduce material costs. While the use of specialty optical fiber is widespread throughout the communications industry, component developers often overlook it as an enabling technology. Unlike standard, single-mode transmission fibers, specialty optical fiber is custom-designed for specific applications and has been integral to the development of devices such as couplers and optical amplifiers.

for incorporating erbium ions into the glass is solution-doping (see Figure 1). In solution-doping, the unsintered oxide soot is immersed in a solution that contains erbium ions. The soot is then dried and sintered, incorporating the erbium into the glass matrix. Controlling the soot density is challenging and leads to a variation in the erbium solubility, resulting in inconsistent concentration of erbium in the fiber.

Amplification Fibers Evolve In the mid-1990s, the commercial introduction of the erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) made dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) possible. At the heart of the EDFA is a specialty optical fiber—erbium-doped fiber. Next-generation DWDM systems will demand more from EDFAs in terms of performance and cost. Continued innovation of erbium-doped fiber is essential to meeting these demands.

More Consistent Doping Most erbium-doped fibers do not have uniform doping profiles because of the doping techniques currently used in the industry. Doping nonuniformity presents a challenge to EDFA manufacturers because identical lengths of fiber do not necessarily provide the same performance, resulting in rework and high scrap costs.

In the modified chemical-vapor deposition (MCVD) process, which is widely used in the fiber optics industry to make the glass preforms from which optical fiber is drawn, the most prevalent method

An alternative technique to solution-doping is to sublimate an erbium precursor by heating it in a chamber separate from the deposition substrate. This generates an erbium-containing vapor that is oxidized simultaneously with the host-glass precursors.

The resulting soot is an erbium-doped silica glass.

However, the low vapor pressure of the erbium precursor causes the concentration of erbium to decrease along the length of the deposition tube. This also results in inconsistent concentration of erbium in the fiber.

While the use of erbium-doped fiber is widespread, doping nonuniformity contributes significantly to the overall cost of an EDFA. Specialty fiber manufacturers are exploring several approaches to overcome this fundamental flaw, including novel precursors and fabrication processes.

Higher Doping Concentrations Erbium-doped fiber is one of the major material cost drivers in an EDFA, which may contain several hundred to several thousand dollars worth of erbiumdoped fiber. One way to lower costs is to dope the fiber with higher concentrations of erbium. Although this technique requires significant glass-composition development, it can result in amplifiers that achieve specified performance levels with shorter fiber lengths, thus lowering the material cost of the EDFA by as much as 15% (see Figure 2). This is especially critical for emerging applications such as L-band EDFAs, which require significantly more erbium-doped fiber than their C-band counterparts. Some L-band EDFA designs require as much as 100 m of erbiumdoped fiber.

amplification, thus reducing the efficiency of the amplifier. In addition, the upconverted erbium ion has alternative routes back to the ground state, further reducing the efficiency of the amplifier.

One way to prevent erbium clustering is to include additional dopants in the host glass. The incorporation of aluminum, for example, modifies the glass structure by increasing the distance between the erbium ions, thus minimizing the erbium-erbium energy transfer.

While aluminum enhances the dissolution of erbium in silica glass, alternative dopants could further increase the amount of erbium in silica.

While advances in erbium-doped fiber are constantly improving the performance and cost of EDFAs, future optical networks will require amplifiers for new wavelength bands such as the S-band. Specialty optical-fiber developments are under way to address this trend. New doping candidates, such as thulium, appear promising for S-band amplifiers. Other amplification approaches include fiber optimized for discrete Raman amplification, a technology that allows amplification at any wavelength.

Novel Photosensitive Fiber Design A common theme in optical-component design and manufacturing is to minimize component count and human intervention. One way of achieving this is to bring functionality that was previously performed by discrete optics inside the fiber itself.

The incorporation of arbitrary amounts of erbium into a silica-based glass, however, is not practical because of the effects of clustering. The matrix of the silicon oxide (SiO2) host is rigid, which prevents erbium ions from readily bonding with the nonbridging oxygen ions, thus causing the erbium ions to cluster together.

When clustering occurs, the close proximity of erbium ions enables “upconversion.” In upconversion, an erbium ion that is in an excited state (having absorbed a pump photon) can transfer its energy to a neighboring erbium ion that is also in an excited state.

This upconversion provides a mechanism for one of the ions to give up its energy without providing

Photosensitive fiber is a specialty optical fiber optimized so that its refractive index changes when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. The magnitude of the refractive-index variation depends on many factors such as UV wavelength and intensity, fiber pre- and post-processing, and core glass composition. The main application of photosensitive fibers is in fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). In FBGs, a periodic perturbation of refractive index along an optical fiber acts as an infiber optical filter.

Examples of devices incorporating FBGs include pump lasers, optical add/drop modules, gainflattening filters, and dispersion-compensation modules. These components are facing the same cost and performance challenges as EDFAs, and several innovations in photosensitive fiber design exist to treat these problems.

Cladding Mode Suppression Cladding mode (or short-wavelength) loss is an effect that occurs because of coupling between the fundamental core mode of the fiber and backward propagating modes supported by the cladding. The result of this coupling is a loss of transmitted light at wavelengths shorter than the center wavelength of the FBG (see Figure 3). This loss limits the performance of all FBG-based devices, especially those designed for broadband operation.

the potential of this design, maintaining comparable photosensitivity in both the core and cladding while achieving the required refractive index difference presents a significant challenge.

Athermal Fiber Variations in the temperature of the fiber can lead to changes in the refractive index and to the thermal expansion of the fiber, causing a slight shift in the FBG center wavelength. For silica-based glass, the FBG center-wavelength shift is due to the variation of the refractive index with temperature through the thermooptic coefficient, which is typically 7 x 10-6/°C, and the coefficient of thermal expansion, which is typically 5 x 10-7/°C (note that the thermo-optic coefficient is the predominant contributor).

Athermal fibers can preserve FBG performance over a wide range of temperatures, using novel glass compositions and/or waveguide structures. One approach to mitigating the shift of the FBG center wavelength with temperature is to incorporate materials with opposite thermo-optic coefficients in the core of the fiber. For example, combining the appropriate amounts of germanium oxide (GeO2) with boron oxide (B2O3) in silica fiber can create a core composition with a negligible thermo-optic coefficient.

This loss is caused by coupling between the fundamental core mode of the fiber and backward-propagating modes supported by the cladding. The effect is particularly significant for DWDM devices.

Modification of the waveguide structure or to the composition of the fiber can reduce or eliminate cladding mode loss. One approach is to design a fiber with a high numerical aperture, which increases the distance between the FBG center wavelength and the cladding-mode-loss region. However, this approach does not eliminate cladding mode loss altogether and the spacing may not be sufficient for broadband devices.

An alternative approach is to uniformly extend the photosensitive region of the fiber beyond the core and into the inner cladding. This design corrects the nonuniform refractive-index modulation of the fiber cross section, preventing coupling to the cladding modes, thus eliminating cladding mode loss. Despite

Multifunction Fiber The focus today is on discrete fiber types. Many optical components use different types of fiber spliced together to achieve a desired functionality. For example, a pump laser pigtail can incorporate both specialty pigtail and photosensitive fiber.

Tomorrow’s fibers will combine multiple functions into one fiber, reducing final product cost and preserving or even improving performance. A photosensitive, polarization-maintaining coupler fiber with a tailored cutoff wavelength is one such fiber. This three-in-one fiber could be used in Raman applications such as grating-stabilized pigtails and polarization-beam combiners. Furthermore, having this specialty fiber as a common pigtail for these components would reduce the loss when they are spliced together.

In-building propagation measurements for the coming fifth-generation mobile communication technologies (5G)

Introduction Spectrum regulators, world-wide, are recognizing the need to open up new spectrum to support the rapidly growing use of high speed data. In July, 2016, the US FCC opened up nearly 11 GHz of spectrum in the mmWave frequency range. Specifically; 27.5 to 28.35 GHz, 37 to 38.6 GHz. 38.6 to 40 GHz, and 64 to 71 GHz. Users will expect their devices, with this new spectrum, to function similarly to their current devices. New Machine-to-Machine (M2M) devices will need to work in closets and cabinets inside buildings.

While outdoor propagation of this mmWave spectrum is well known, few studies have been done in-building.

Anritsu is a leader in mmWave measurement test equipment and offers the MG369xC Series Signal Generators and MS2720T Series of portable spectrum analyzers covering the new 5G frequencies to 40 GHz. This article outlines procedures to make mmWave inbuilding propagation predictions and measurements.

With the operational costs associated with 5G mmWave deployments of chief concern to operators, easy to use tools will be required to enable field technicians to quickly and economically map the coverage of future 5G mmWave radios. Complex and heavy engineering setups will not be practical. Test procedures and equipment need to be as economical and simple for 5G as those used to set-up WiFi networks today. The portable, Android-based solution presented below provides excellent first order coverage estimations suitable for real-world deployments.

and horn antenna set to receive the 28 GHz signal. The two horn antennas were separated by 10 feet. Wall panels, glass panels, and doors were inserted in the path between the two horn antennas. Measurements were made with the panels perpendicular, 30, and 60 degrees with the transmission path.

Office panel propagation loss measurements Measurements of office material propagation loss were made to support the prediction of the coverage within the office. These measurements were done with the MG3694C Signal Generator sending a 28 GHz signal to ▲ Chart. Results of inserting a wall panel between the two horns separated by 10 feet vs. a pane of glass a horn antenna and the MS2720T Spectrum Analyzer vs. having nothing in between. (See Figures 2 and 3)

Office coverage predictions using EDX SignalPro prediction software A wall layout plan was obtained for the office area, and was converted into a 3D structure database so that coverage predictions could be made using EDX SignalPro® software from EDX Wireless. The software incorporated the office materials loss characteristics as determined by the previous measurements. The path loss model used in the EDX software was their “EDX Simplified Indoor Model” which is similar to the COST 231 model in that it is a direct path multi-wall/ floor model well suited for indoor environments.

Office coverage measurements using the Anritsu MS2720T Spectrum Master and MA8100A TRX NEON Signal Mapper For coverage measurements, the MG3694C Signal Generator with horn antenna was placed on a cabinet with the horn antenna at 7 feet, simulating the location of a 5G hot spot. The MS2720T spectrum analyzer was placed on a wheeled cart and moved through the office area while the spectrum analyzer continuously made channel power measurements.

To support fast and easy in-building measurements, Anritsu partnered with TRX Systems to introduce the MA8100A NEON Signal Mapper, a coverage mapping solution that provides in-building coverage maps based on mmWave measurements from Anritsu’s portable spectrum analyzers. The solution incorporated an Android phone as a controller (mobile connectivity can be disabled), connected via USB to the spectrum analyzer and via Bluetooth to the NEON tracking unit. This system works together to gather signal strength measurements correlated to building location. The NEON tracking unit contains a gyroscope, accelerometer, barometric pressure sensor, compass, and ranging sensors to accurately maintain location position without the need for GPS connectivity.

Set up of the MA8100A TRX NEON Signal Mapper The MA8100A includes the NEON Command Software, a PC-based software package that supports adding detailed floor plans and reviewing the measurement results.

Preparing a map with the NEON Command Software requires a few easy steps:

1. Floor plans for each building should be located and converted to a graphics format (i.e., jpg, bmp, gif, etc.).

2. The address of the building should be entered into the NEON Command Software and the building to be mapped located on the PC screen.

3. The floor plan should be linked to the building following the NEON Command Software user guide.

Prior to conducting in-building mapping, the analyzer itself must first be configured to properly measure the signals of interest. Knowledge of various parameters, such as anticipated signal strength and variation, potential presence of interfering signals, and noise sources, should be used in determining analyzer settings. A brief summary of the main analyzer setups used in this article procedure is shown below.

However, the user may want to refer to the instrument user manual for more detailed guidance.

1. Frequency The MS2720T center frequency was set to 28 GHz to match the signal generator frequency.

2. Span The span was set to 1 MHz for easy viewing the signal in a 10 kHz RBW. 3. Resolution Bandwidth The resolution bandwidth was set to 10 kHz to provide a -90 dBm noise floor.

4. Reference Level, Pre-Amplifier and Attenuator The reference Level was set to -10 dBm with 10 dB attenuation to prevent overload when very close to the generator.

5. Measurement Mode The NEON Signal Mapper application (run on an Andriod device) accepts channel power measurements from the MS2720T. To set up channel power measurements press “Shift” “Measure” and “Channel Power”. A channel width of 100 kHz was used. The Android device displays the measurement values as they are taken.

The 178 measurement points results were then compared with the EDX SignalPro area study’s received power predictions. The mean error between prediction and measurement was 0.8dB with a standard deviation of 7.5dB showing good correlation between the two analyses. ▲ Figure 12. 2. The operator walks the office, observing the location on the smart phone or tablet. When the walk is complete the operator uploads the measurement results with locations to the included NEON cloud storage or locally on the smart phone or tablet.

Understanding in-building propagation will be important for the success of the coming 5G mobile communication technologies. Anritsu is a leader in mmWave measurement test equipment and offers both equipment and software to make it easy to measure in-building coverage of the new 5G spectrum.

3. The measurement results can be reviewed using the NEON Command Software in 2D, 3D or as a comma-separated values (.csv) file. The NEON Command Software provides a heat map display which uses an average of the measurements made to predict coverage around the walking path.
