L

ast June, in an article about the seafront we coined a phrase, ‘Southsea was made for summer’. I was so pleased with the words, I half expected to see it emblazoned on T-shirts and tea towels all over town. That’s not to say Southsea isn’t a great place to live in the winter, but it’s in the summer that the town has a spring in its step. The light from the sea reflects and brightens the city’s atmosphere, and curtains swing in the breeze at open windows.

As Emma Beatty reports in Culture Vulture (p.64), the seafront has had a boost with a new helter-skelter and restaurant on South Parade Pier, and this has to be one of the best years for roses - pop along to see (and smell) Southsea Rose Garden, in front of Canoe Lake, with its lush grass tennis courts.

Of course this month, many of us are focused upon Victorious Festival, but there are lots of alternative musical treats along the way, including some great acts at Live at the Bandstand, or for something more formal there’s the Royal Marines Summer Concert at the Guildhall - see What’s on, (p.54 & p.55).

Or maybe you could just take a stroll, and enjoy the ambience - after all Southsea was made for summer.

DEAL OR NO DEAL

I

was astounded to watch the recent BBC documentary series Behind Closed Doors, a fly on the wall documentary about the Brexit negotiations in Brussels.

Regardless of which way you voted in the referendum, the programme was very enlightening.

Despite contrary reports from the tabloid press, I gained the distinct impression that the EU actually did their best to meet our initial suggestions, but as we began changing our terms it became increasingly impossible for Brussels to trust the UK. Doubtless our position had to change to try and accommodate the shifting sands at Westminster. The B word is a sensitive subject, but speaking to clients and friends, regardless of them being leavers or remainers, it appears the reality of daily life seems far removed from the machinations at Westminster. I’m left with the feeling that not only is our government and our political system being severely tested by Brexit, but other, probably far more important matters such as climate change, knife crime, and homelessness are being ignored to the detriment of the country.

Speaking as someone who negotiates on a daily basis, I have found that all parties involved must be willing to set out exactly what their objectives are from day one - and to not deviate from those objectives. To do this you have to do your homework, gather your facts, and in our case, survey reports, plus local supporting transactions, showing recent sales, dates and details. This

gives each party a sound basis to proceed from.

Where the negotiations start to break down is if one party then changes their objectives halfway through the deal.

I remember we once had an expensive property sale that was progressing well, the price was agreed, and the buyer had paid for the survey and searches. The sale included all carpets and curtains, but on receiving the fixtures and fittings list, the purchaser discovered the vendor wanted to keep the yellow curtains on the landing - as they had been made by the seller’s mother-in-law.

Despite offering to replace the curtains with a brand new pair, or a cash sum, the buyer insisted on having the yellow curtains as they were part of the deal.

Unbelievably, the sale fell through as there was nothing I, or the solicitors, could do to hold it together.

Returning to the current political turmoil, the local housing market has in my opinion stood up well, the biggest obstacles probably being mortgage lenders. Apart from loans to complete blue chip borrowers, there is a large sector of people who are unable to secure affordable lending. I’m not advocating a return to getting a mortgage with a packet of breakfast cereal, but there has to be a middle ground to stop the social exclusion. Maybe once things settle down, the government might begin talking with banks and building societies about how they assess mortgage applications, but let’s not be too optimistic about the negotiations.

The Dead Don’t Die USA 2019 Director: Jim Jarmusch Cert 15

was expecting great things from The Dead Don’t Die. A zombie apocalypse horror spoof with an interesting indie/Hollywood pedigree. Directed by the off-beat Jim Jarmusch with a cast of (quite) big-name actors such as Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Steve Buscemi, Danny Glover, and Chloë Sevigny.

I don’t know whether this is true, but it really looks, sounds and feels like Jarmusch gathered a load of his mates together and they cobbled together a story from all corners of the horror and apocalyptic genres. But it lacked all the sharpness and dedication of What We Do in the Shadows and I had to ask, ‘why did he bother?’.

I like the horror genre. Not the ‘Hostel’ type, nor the Taika Waititi’s What We Do in the Shadows is always

R

eclaiming a street in Southsea for playtime could just be the start of a bigger movement across the city.

Mother-of-two Laura Mellor has been the driving force behind a pilot scheme that has seen a section of busy Francis Avenue closed to traffic for a Sunday afternoon in July to allow the children to play safely on the street.

This latest playing-out session follows the success of an initial experiment that coincided with roadworks on the road.

Laura explained: “During the Easter school holidays part of the road was closed to traffic while the council installed traffic

calming measures so it was the ideal time to see if playing in the street would work.

“The response was great - the kids made new friends and it was a chance for parents and grown-ups to get to know each other over a cup of tea.

“It was likened to a camping holiday where you know the kids are somewhere around playing and they are safe.”

As well as being a great way to make new friends, playing in the streets helps to increase children’s daily activity and there are also benefits with reduced levels of air and noise pollution.

Cars can still park in the closed section and if they need to be moved during the play session, stewards can ensure they do so slowly and safely. Parents are responsible for their children at all times during street play sessions.

Laura explained there are successful Playing Out schemes in Bristol and Hackney and they have helped her to pull the trial together. When she approached Portsmouth City Council they were very supportive.

Having gathered feedback following the initial experiment, Laura needed to get the necessary permissions for the road closure. “If the trial is successful, we would like to make this a monthly occurrence from September and have the road closed for play on a Sunday afternoon,� said Laura.

Laura has set up a Playing Out Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/ports mouthplayingout) and if residents from other roads wanting to set up similar schemes want advice they can contact her there.

THE HISTORY MAKERS

n a blustery June day The Portsmouth Grammar School unveiled new artwork to adorn the newly built Upper Junior School archway.

The artwork was commissioned by the Junior School Association and is entitled The History Makers. The work features significant figures and alumni from the School’s history – Old Portmuthians. At the start of the project, pupils worked with the School Archivist, Mr John Sadden, to decide which characters would feature, from William Smith, the Founder of The Portsmouth Grammar School in 1732 to Paul Jones, the lead singer of the ‘60s band, Manfred Mann, Roger Black (Olympic gold medal winner) and James Bobin, the director of the recent Muppet movies. The pupils then worked with Southsea artist Kevin Dean, using pen & ink and collage to create images of the characters. The final design work was undertaken by Dean Howard at Type Twenty Five, and the enamel plates were printed by A. J Wells on the Isle of Wight.

used vitreous enamel in other public art projects before, and it’s extremely hard wearing and durable, and should last for many decades to come” said Kevin Dean.

Archways are symbolic at PGS - marking the points of entry and exit on the pupil’s journey through the school. The archway forms part of the transition process from the Lower to the Upper Juniors, as the children will learn about the characters represented and their contribution to the history of our school.

At the unveiling, the school welcomed back Old Portmuthian Mike Wedderburn. Mike studied at PGS before forging a career as professional cricketer and rugby player. He is now a familiar face on Sky Sport News, where he has been a presenter for over 20 years; he currently coanchors Good Morning Sports Fans.

HOW TO NOT DROWN

very day, more than 1,000 people around the globe drown. But you can avoid becoming a statistic. August Bank Holiday is one of the busiest days of the year for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). Their nationwide campaign urging people to Respect The Water has been heavily informed by Professor Mike Tipton at the University of Portsmouth.

Research at Portsmouth revealed a key factor in drowning is a phenomenon known as “cold shock”. Sudden immersion in cold water snatches air from your lungs, leaving you gasping, panicking for breath.

You can accidentally suck in water instead of air and quickly find yourself drowning.

Mike explains, ‘If you take a big breath in, that’s around three litres. The lethal dose of salt water for drowning is about a litre and a half. So being under the water or having a big wave splash into your face can be enough to start the drowning process. The other problem with cold water is that it tends to make you thrash around and try to swim hard – panicking and fighting the water. That's the “fight or flight” response. Which works on land, but not in water.’

Mike says, ‘Horizontal is a much less stressful position to be in. You’ve got to have the confidence to do nothing and to fight that instinct to thrash about and swim. Just trust that you’re not going to be floating on top of the water.

You’re still in it but your airways will be clear of water.’

So, how to float?

Mike’s research helped shape the RNLI’s Float To Live advice. With coastal drownings falling by 30 per cent in 2017, it seems to be saving lives; numerous people have contacted the RNLI saying they remembered to float first when they fell into

“I

f in doubt leave it out” is the catchy mantra that one of our pupils shared with listeners as she, and a fellow pupil, along with our Deputy Head, were interviewed on Radio Solent. She was referring to the use, or misuse of social media, access to which is the easiest it has ever been through the development of the smart phone. Specifically the pupils were extolling the virtues of our cyber ambassador scheme which involves pupils helping peers navigate the choppy waters of posting online. Perhaps as the new academic year starts your child is for the first time having access to a mobile phone and you are concerned about the increase in use. One of the problems adults have in letting go and allowing a child to own a phone is the fear of addiction and overuse and the concern about entry to an uncontrollable world.

A research team at Oxford University has found that the impacts of social media on adolescent well-being is tiny. The study, which took place between 2009 and 2017, asked thousands of 10 to 15-year-olds to say how long they spent using social media on a normal school day and also rate how satisfied they were with different aspects of life. It was found that the correlation between the effect of the use of social media on wellbeing was trivial. This report does much to reassure but it only paints part of the picture.

Children should be properly educated about the powerful tool they have in the guise of a phone.

It has far greater use than just being a messaging service and this is the advantage a smart phone has over a device that does not provide internet access. Using a phone, whether that is to watch films or chat on social media, should never replace other activity such as communication face to face and hobbies and interests. Phones should not be near children at night and left out of sight and far away to ensure a good night’s sleep. There are aspects of phones that are a blessing and a curse and success lies in making the most of the benefits and limiting the invasive poisonous elements.

In the senior school we encourage girls to use technology to support their learning. That will range from setting reminders to help organisation to photographing team lists and teacher work on the classroom board. If technological devices are demonised then there is a missed opportunity to educate over the pros and cons.

In relative safety teenagers may learn from their mistakes and have help available for if events get out of hand. Those that think smart phones will go away have missed the fact that the genie is out of the bottle and it is far better and safer that phones are embraced as part of an enlightened and educated future.

1 Preheat the oven to 180˚C, gas mark 4. Put the hazelnuts on a small baking tray and roast for 8 minutes or until golden; set aside to cool. Meanwhile, grease and line the base and sides of 2 loose-bottomed 18cm sandwich cake tins. Put the cooled hazelnuts and 1 tbsp caster sugar in a small food processor; pulse until ground (a few chunky pieces are fine).

The answer given is Fort Cumberland at Eastney point, and the overwhelming reaction is ‘Where?’

ort Cumberland, an 18th Century Bastion Fort, sits proudly on the western side of the entrance to Langstone Harbour on Eastney Point, the south-eastern most point of Portsea island, on the same road as the Hayling Ferry.

The three team members at the Portsmouth Distillery Co. Giles Collighan, Vince Noyce, and Dich Oatley, are pushing the boundaries of spirit innovation and development.

Not only do they make the sensational, and now very well-known Fort Gin, they are making exquisite rum (1968) from a syrup which they make using dehydrated sugar cane juice from Costa Rica. Not stopping there though, they now have Cinnabar Spiced Rum, which, unlike most spiced rum, has the spices distilled, not infused, into the rum. This gives it a very clean and crisp flavour whilst maintaining the 1968 rum softness and exotic taste profile.

All of this would probably be enough for a distillery which has only been producing fine quality spirits since November 2018. Not for the Portsmouth Distillery Co. though. Their latest product is true innovation! They have a new rum called Forum. Like Cinnabar this uses the base rum wash of 1968 rum

but, this time, the team have distilled ‘gin’ botanicals into it, producing a fabulous new rum for those who love gin, and a refreshing escape for those who love rum. It is superb with tonic, yes tonic! Look out for this world first in the bars and restaurants across Portsmouth this summer, or pop down to the fort for a tour and try it straight from the still.

ast year’s Victorious was a certainly a festival of two halves with hot sunshine on the Saturday, followed by torrential rain on the Sunday. But if you were one of the committed music lovers that sloshed your way down to the Common in your wellies you would have encountered a great community spirit of people determined to enjoy themselves - despite the weather. Fortunately, the storm blew over in time for the closing acts on Sunday evening, including the amazing Prodigy and sadly one of the final performances of their lead singer Keith Flint, who died earlier this year.

REBECCA’S ARTISTIC EYE TRANSFORMS THE QUEENS

eing offered the chance to bring a slumbering Edwardian beauty back to life through her interior designs has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Rebecca Peach.

The talented designer has been let loose on the majestic splendour of the Queens Hotel in Southsea - and her stylish use of colour and texture do not disappoint.

She has been careful to work with the inherent beauty of the building, while adding contemporary flourishes that ensure the final scheme is at once dramatic and welcoming.

Rebecca, who has also designed Southsea’s Monty’s in Castle Road and transformed Royal Surgeon House in Haslar, among other period and contemporary properties, admitted the challenge had been huge, but she had relished every moment.

“There have been many sleepless nights, with hours of research and sourcing, but it has been utterly satisfying when you find the right piece.

“I recently sourced a Maitland Smith Regency inlaid mahogany cabinet, which you can see in the hotel. It is absolutely stunning, and perfect for the main hall to the Elizabeth Room.

“We are working on an amazing design to bring the beautiful lobby together in a stunning and elegant way.

“We have reinstalled a period Statuary marble fireplace and acquired an amazing antiqued mirror from Dominic Schuster.

“I have lots more period and modern features being made and designed that will make the space the finest hotel lobby in the south,” Photos: Johnny Black

“The projects I have finished so far have received wonderful feedback, and after doing the planning, drawings, and sourcing for these I feel I can tackle anything now,” she said.

A relative newcomer to interior design, Rebecca was a creative child who loved to make clothes and toys, as well as paint and draw.

She had a successful business in San Francisco making soft furnishings for the rich and famous.

en years ago, Paul McCartney and his family launched a concept aimed to raise awareness of the detrimental impact animal agriculture was having on the environment – meat-free Mondays. Since then, the rise of the vegan and vegetarian movement has exploded, and it’s easy to see why.

There’s no denying that the meat and fishing industries are huge contributors to climate change. In fact, the Union of Concerned Scientists lists eating meat as the second-biggest environmental hazard facing the Earth, just behind fossil-fuelled vehicles.

A deadly combination of aggressive deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions as a result of intensive livestock farming are sending us dangerously over the threshold of environmental safety. A Japanese study recently found that producing just 1kg of beef had the equivalent environmental impact of driving a car for a whopping 250km (that’s like driving all the way around the Isle of Wight – twice!).

While researchers from the University of Oxford discovered eating less meat and dairy products could be the single biggest way for us to reduce our impact on the environment – it’s no wonder that more people are adopting a vegan, vegetarian or flexitarian diet.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. With so many delicious alternatives on the market now, from Gregg’s vegan sausage rolls to Ben & Jerry’s nondairy ice-cream, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to our favourite comfort foods. As well as these tasty treats, a meat-free diet encourages us to incorporate more vegetables and grains into our diet too. It’s no secret that replacing processed meats with vibrant wholefoods can aid our health

and help to prevent nasty diseases.

Meat-free Mondays are pretty selfexplanatory, but the concept is designed to encourage people who normally eat a meat-heavy diet to incorporate one day of plant-based meals into their lifestyle. It’s a small step that, when done on a large scale, can have a big impact on slowing climate change and conserving our precious natural resources.

In Southsea, we’re lucky to have a wide selection of shops and restaurants offering incredible vegan and vegetarian options for us. I’ve listed some of my personal favourites below, which all feature tasty meals that help make those meat-free days so much easier.

Having only first adopted a vegetarian diet myself just over a year ago, and gradually incorporating more and more vegan choices into my own meals, I’m by no means an expert. One thing I have learned is that cutting out meat and cutting back dairy from my diet has been a lot easier than I thought it would be. I feel healthier and more energised on a daily basis, and it’s a good feeling to know I’m doing my bit for the environment.

If you’re conscious about protecting our planet and are looking for ways to reduce your impact as an individual, consider incorporating a meat-free day (or two!) into your weekly food shop.

Regular visitors to Highland Road can’t have failed to spot the ever changing wall outside his Playdead Studio where thought provoking street art can be seen.

Inside Samo hosts a calendar of edgy events and exhibitions bringing together Southsea’s most creative people and the gallery walls are ever changing.

Out the back is the tattoo studio where Samo swaps brush and paint for needle and ink to create delicate and beautiful designs.

WALK ON THE WILD SIDE

Kate Thompson who writes our regular Welcome Home feature, has stepped outdoors into the Southsea sunshine to find out more about the healing powers of life on the allotment.

S

pending time on the Milton Piece Community Allotment in Locksway Road, it’s easy to see why this particular plot has proven so beneficial to hundreds of volunteers.

The project will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2022. In that time the plot has grown and flourished - and so have its healing powers.

Community gardener Jenny Woods joined in 2004, and she admitted she had to pick up new skills pretty quickly.

“When I first came here, I didn’t know much about vegetable growing, so in that first year I learned really quickly.

“People get referred in different ways to come

to the community allotment. There are self-referrals and some are referred by their doctor or different teams.

“Being outside, hearing the birds can bring back memories of childhood and seeing things growing all around you is so positive,” she said.

Young and old volunteers flock to the community allotment and each gains something new from the experience.

Jenny has seen many people transform before her eyes as a result of getting involved in the project.

“There was one gentleman in his 90s who had suffered poor health and so his own

garden had deteriorated.

“He started coming along and helped with the sowing and potting-on. He had so much experience, he was able to share with me and the others.

“Gradually, he started taking plants home until he eventually started gardening at home again.

“Another woman who came here as a volunteer was inspired to go to study at Sparsholt College, and now works as a professional gardener.

“People come from all walks of life, and some have been coming for years. It’s great to be able to show children and adults where their food comes from, and the best part is the volunteers get to take home whatever is ready to harvest that day,” she said.

CULTURE VULTURE Southsea summer, by Emma Beatty

I

t’s August! Yay! Probably the best month to be in Southsea. The seafront is looking pretty spectacular with the bright new orange helter-skelter on the pier. South Parade Pier itself is a pretty decent place to go out at night now with its amazing sunset views and restaurants and events – roller discos and Northern Soul are on the agenda I see. And there’s a shiny new restaurant just up along the parade, The Briny, bringing a bit of seafood sparkle to that bit of the beach that’s long needed it.

Walking westwards along the seafront there’s also the champagne bar at Southsea Castle,

every Friday throughout the summer.

And Jazz Sundays at the newly revamped, and very regal, Queens Hotel.

Wending further along to the Hot Walls, culture vultures should seek out Jack House Gallery in Portsmouth High Street this month. Its new show, John Green ‘Art of the Dockyard’, is a big display of largely dockyard work by the local Portsmouth artist who’s long had an association with the city’s boatbuilding past. It also includes some of his characterful drawings of people, with a very local feel. The show will be quite salon-style with a big range of work. Rebecca

For more contemporary painting, catch the Gosport ferry over to Stoke Road (just up the main High Street) to see Yellow Edge Gallery. It’s only been open a few months and is Hampshire’s newest contemporary fine art gallery. It’s not staffed as such to keep costs down, so relies on artists to cover the opening times. Shows to visit include Hampshire Open Studios – Peninsular Artists – Ailsa Brims, David Brims, Kristy Fluery, Maggie Cochran, Linda Davies, Sue Wells, Huw Heywood and Jess Shaw (17-26 August). Then, 27-31 August, it’s Chris Wood and friends – Impression.

Aspex Gallery in Gunwharf is running its summer programme until 22 September.

Artists Rhiannon Armstrong, Monica Bonomo and Susan Stockwell have been commissioned to complete a series of residencies, generating new work about ideas of currency and value.

Rhiannon Armstrong’s work includes a quilt embroidered with personal stories. Borrow some headphones from the Info Desk, take a seat next to the quilt and listen to one before contributing your own.

Monica Bonomo’s work mixes hand-dyed fabrics and spices such as turmeric and cinnamon inspired by her recent stay in Morocco. She’s running a series of botanical workshops at Aspex and offsite at the Tennis Pavilion at Canoe Lake and Victorious Festival.
