My love for forms that are

Me so far...

Design to me is a reflection of yourself - its ‘you’ only with a slightly unconventional set of colours, forms, shapes etc. Looking at the few products I have designed so far, the elements that I believe stand out are that of playfulness, colour, positivity, simplicity and a sort of talkativeness, so I guess these are the few words that mirror and reflect a bit of me, my personality, through the lens of what I’ve created so far.

Coming

from

India,

a

country

that

is

known for its colour, known to be a place full of stories, a place that celebrates the past - these roots are something I wish to bring out in everything I create.

The small bursts of colour in everything I have designed so far, the element of storytelling and positivity that my projects try to encompass are all a reflection of my culture that find room in everything I have created, and wish to create in the future.

Stepping into the world of charcoal sketches

things led me to discover the world of charcoal sketches and soft pastels, soon I was addicted to this world. It began as a way to pass my time and slowly evolved to became one of the main sources that drew me to the world of design and creating.

Reading is something else I have always enjoyed, the many years of reading a number of Agatha Christies and Paulo Coehlo’s introduced me to the idea of creating a narrative, a story through my work and designing products that are talkative, a storyteller of sorts.

Along this creative path, every day you get the chance to come across different designers and creators and connect with their work, their language, their philosophy in surprising ways. To me it’s about being inspired a little, by everything – the sculptural, curved quality of Simone Brewster’s designs, Yinka Ilori’s bold choices of colour that are powerful enough to bring in this element of positivity even in the dullest of surroundings, or even Lu Yongzhong’s design philosophy of drawing people’s attention to those details that go unnoticed, that I bond with. I enjoy how untamed and borderless a design process is, it teaches you to just flow through it – you connect the dots, you infuse the smallest of traits, skills, memories into that form you wish to create.

The values and traits that Japanese product designer Oki Sato celebrates through his work is something I can easily relate to and draw parallels with. Though his design language may not always be what I look to embody, the values that those products embrace is something that I can truly connect with. His designs embody and celebrate a sort of playfulness that I really value in design. His motto of adding the ‘fun in function’ is something I wish to mirror through my designs.

with a brand(Speedo), a consultancy(Matter) and as an individual made me realize that both ends of the spectrum offer something exciting. I enjoy the freedom that comes along with working as an individual – working at my own pace, creating something that boldly reflects parts of me through its design. That being said, working with people, adapting to the way a brand or a consultancy build their story, bringing to the table ideas of several people, is thrilling in its own way.

It’s about being open to all experiences - enjoying and adapting to whatever the season brings.
