VISUAL COMPOSITION This project was an introduction to the basic principles of Design, where visual elements were composed to represent conditions and relationships common to visual communication.

Basic shapes such as Square, circle, triangle and letter forms along with textured element were used to represent design principles such as density, symmetry, static, continuity, sparcity, rotation and several others.

Each composition was arranged on 20 x 20cm of white bristol paper.

HYBRID COMPOSITION This project aims to integrate issues of space, form and image in a single 3 dimensional mixedmedia composition.

A series of explorations were made that referred to physical, spatial and compositional requirements.

Details such as material connections and scale of the components was thoroughly explored and executed. This required careful attention to find solution towards the integration of different materials.

Basswood sticks, black museum board, colour elements and found object all of varying scale and material were used in the composition of this hybrid.

The nature of the hybrid condition and the multi-faceted relationships required a formal/spatial complexity where elaboration and articulation supersede simplification.

In addition to the method and manner of defining space with volumes and planes, 3D vocabulary was expanded to represent design principals such as: Organizational relationships: Symmetry, asymmetry, alignment, axis, datum, grids, center, edge-perimeter-envelope.

Principal relationships: Repetition, rhythm, density, continuity, solid-void, hierarchy, positive-negative, overlapping, penetration, transition, proportion.

To Further help define volumes and articulate organizational structures, Movements (rotation, shifting, folding) and Connections ( joint, notch, layers, wrapping) were explored

PHOTO COLLAGE For this project a tool and a body part was chosen. The aim was to create/ design a photo collage that “RePresents� the tool in such a way as to express the qualities or characteristics that you personally relate to the tool.

The photo collage technique used was of photographing the tool in fragments so that it could be re-assembled to make a new whole. Photographs of a body part were taken that relate with the tool and incorporated into a comprehensive visual composition, including shapes and text.

SPACE MAKING

This project aims at exploring the three dimensional system of organization and space making.

A series of exercises were processed using integration of planar and volumetric elements to explore issues of balance, symmetry and stasis. Moreover, design principles such as axis, repetition, rhythm, hierarchy, grid and centre.

SPACE MAKING

Further explorations were continued using a variety of materials and elements. Compositions were created using additional volumes and voids while incorporating the main design principles.

VERB GESTURES

For this project, the verb “Align� was used to create gestural compositions through the medium of charcoal.

The verb was carefully studied and interpreted in the most curious, potentiality vivid and open to the broadest range of translation. A series of iterative gestural graphic translations were created.

Further in the project, two verbs “Align” & “Warp” were used to create a single graphic translation.

The medium of charcoal was further explored in the composition by using a variety of line weights. A similar gestural iterative process was used in the project.

COLOUR STUDIES

Various water colour studies were processed for this assignment. Initially, flat washes and gradations were made using primary colours. Later, transition from primary to secondary and to tertiary were explored. The studies were explored on A1 size cold pressed water colour sheets mounted on ply wood boards.

Further water colour studies were carried out exploring the various possibilities of the medium.

Salt water, water spray and bleach water techniques were explored on A3 sized papers.

VERB FORMS

The chosen verbs “align” and “warp” were given 3-D forms using bristol paper. To do this, the meanings of these words were first carefully studied as to describe the nature, character and qualities of their complementary relationships. New working definition of these verbs and their actions were written, that pushes against the common and literal meaning.

Various iterations of these verb models were carried out. These iterations were quick but wellthought. Each model is made combining the verbs “align” and “ warp” in the most vivid gestural graphic translations of the complimentary pair of verbs.

PATTERN STUDIES

This project explored the basics required for analytical drawing. Initially, basic geometry was practiced using compass to generate a series of dynamic patterns.

Further explorations involved re-creation of Arabic patterns by interpreting them in a series of regulating line, single line and double line drawing.

ANALYTICAL STUDIES

This project was an introduction to analytical drawings. Plan, elevation and section drawings were studied and re-created in the form of axonometric projections. Further explorations involve axonometric projection of physical models in a variety of angles and views. Lastly, exploded axonometric drawings were also studied as a part of the project.

HAND-TOOL COORDINATION

This project involved studies of blind contour drawings of hands and portraits using fountain pen. The aim was to improve coordination between visual information and its graphic representation.

Further in this project, details such as hatching was studied to provide depth in the contour drawings.

HAND-TOOL COORDINATION

The blind contour studies continued to depict glass bottles of various shapes and sizes. Details such as shadows and glass reflections have been added to further enhance the drawings.

HAND-TOOL COORDINATION Techniques were further explored such as wash brush along with hatching to add an additional layer of depth to the drawing.

Careful exploration of line drawings were made to further improve hand-tool coordination. This included a composition of graphic and text.

GESTURE STUDIES

A series of gestural drawings were studied using a variety of mediums such as Conte crayons, graphite, marker and charcoal. The drawings explored quick representation of various postures by graphically representing the information required to understand the posture.

PERSPECTIVE STUDIES

This project involved actual representation of space in the form of 1-point and 2-point perspective drawings. Minute details have been captured to depict the complexity of the space represented. The drawings also include tonal details such as warm and cool tones to enhance illusion of depth.
