Over the course of the studio, we studied a precedent, how it came together and how it came undone. Using that information to create “monstrous kits” and parts of a Media House in Cleveland.
“The parts beconing the whole“
With the Carme Pinos’ Caxia Forum as a precedent, my partner and i created a series of models to study the form and how the building could be put together as well as taken apart. These modeled were the jumping point of our project as we sought to understand the spacial and physical relationship between the model parts.

Using that information we were able to distort and manipulate the parts to evolve into new forms that would become our “Monstrous Kits“. A series of models that would become the media house were created each with varying spacial qualities and experiences. The one chosen was based on how it interacted with and framed the site.
LOCATION: (former) Ford Motor Mill, Cleveland, Ohio PARTNERS: Amy Li Aseel Alamari
The old Ford Motor Plant was chosen as the site for tis studio project. Going through the design and planning process, we had to figure out how to create a self sufficient town on a site haunted by the effects industrialization. To this effect, the site was divided into sections with each section assigned a different task in the grand scheme of the project.

The site prior to 2013, consisted of three buildings; Plant 1, Plant 2 and the casting plant. Currently only Plant 1 stands on the site. Using the aerial views from before deconstruction happened, we were able to model out the casting plant and Plant 2.
This allowed us to get a sense of the amount of material already in use, as this was an adaptive reuse project, these models enabled us to form a sort of “Material Catalog”.
To help speed along the process, the studio was divided into groups each with different tasks relating to the sit: Land, Food, Materiality, Labor, Energy and Domesticity. The first things discovered about the site was that it was heavily contaminated with Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) due to the processes of making Ford engines. This PCB is detrimental to any site, most especially one where in it’s inhabitants are expected to grow their own food and allow animals to graze.
After the research was concluded and we had formed a manifesto of sorts, the site itself was then divided into divisions responsible for: Hospitality/Business, Remediation/Health and Wellness, Education, Agriculture and Energy/Man power. The division assigned to myself and my partners was Division 4; the segment responsible for agriculture and Waste processing and Disposal. Although it was broken into segments we were tasked with forming relationships between each one, so as to design the site as a whole.
The remediation process was found to take at least 30 years, so to accommodate for that timespan, certain changes had to be made. Taking that into consideration, it was decided that there would be on grazing animals like cows and instead the main source of meat in the town would be chickens. The area responsible for agriculture would have to include planters so the food isn’t grown directly from the ground.
The plan was to house a total of 2000 people, and this number was expected to grow as the population grew.
It was decided that each site division would contain housing. For Division 4, the housing structure focused mainly on forcing people out of their rooms and into common spaces. This was done through the implementation of shared baths, cafeterias and laundry areas.
The overall form concept was that of a sandwich; LivingCommon-Living (LCL)

The studio was tasked with creating a recreational center that would act as a landmark. The site was chosen by the everyone in the studio from a variety of options. The main challenges were creating a bold project that would interact while not looking out of place.

The studio began with abstract paintings, may painting was inspired by the work of modernist cubist, Piet Mondrian.

These paintings would then be turned into sculptures that would inform the final models of the recreation center.
Te site, Edgewater, Cleveland, had seen a lot of changes over the years, from farmland and country estates to a park destroyed by construction of the Shoreway and now a lovely shore front where various individuals spend time relaxing.

The project was titled “framing the present“ in reference to the painting, the colourful facade is also a homage to that, as well as the moment captured through views in the project. Whether views of the ocean from the lounge space or the view of the park from the “moving room“.

Towards the end of the Fall 2020 online studio, most architecture students were tasked with creating a memorial for the May 4th Massacre which happened on the Kent State Commons.

As you move through the site, the golden curvilinear forms act as your guide through the memorial, Their golden colour a symbol of Kent State’s mascot “The Golden Flash“.

The experience walking through the memorial is like a story being recounted, the story in question is the unfortunate tragedy of May 4th. The marble panels are engraved with the information regarding the protest, and as you go further nearing the climax you are presented with two squares cut into the ground bearing the names of those who fell.

The preface of this studio involved studying the forms of creatures and creating environments in which they would thrive based on their physical characteristics, this was the help learn relationships that would aide us in the planning of the interior spaces of the final project.

The studio involved modelling creatures and their environment and really focusing on the details and moments taht were formed within the environments. The environment had interesting moments created by the intersection of the tendril-like structures
Moving from the environment to a livibale building form it was clear that the tendril structures would play an important role in the creation.
Going into the massing, the aim was to create moments that felt enclosed but ooen similar to the environemnt fo the creature. This resulted inthe tendril like structures becoming both structure and aesthetic
