The Allegheny Health Network Health + Wellness Pavilion West Side was developed by The Westminster Group Companies and West Ridge Medical Partners, LLC. Construction on the $18.1 million, 44,000-square-foot complex began in early 2015.

The Saint Vincent Urgent Care, Imaging Center and the pediatrics practice will open to patients on Monday, May 16. Rehab Solutions, Sports Medicine and the Primary Care Practices will open the following Monday, May 23.

WHAT’S NEW FOR WOMEN AT SAINT VINCENT TWO ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES ADDED IN THE FIGHT AGAINST BREAST CANCER When it comes to the fight against breast cancer, early detection is vitally important. That’s why Saint Vincent has made two technologies available to area women.

GE SenoClaire Breast Tomosynthesis helps clinicians see breast tissue with more clarity and in three dimensions (3D) versus the two-dimensional (2D) image provided by digital mammography. The system was approved by the FDA in September of 2014 for use in conjunction with traditional digital mammography for women with dense breasts and other conditions. Utilizing a low dose of radiation, breast tomosynthesis captures a number of exposures, which are integrated for a three-dimensional view of the breast.

In addition, Saint Vincent has added Breast MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) technology, which creates detailed pictures of the inside of the breasts. While it is not routinely used in breast cancer screening, it can help detect breast cancer in its earliest stages for women at high risk for developing the disease.

BREAST HEALTH NURSE NAVIGATORS: THE EXPERTISE AND REASSURANCE PATIENTS NEED Breast cancer or breast health concerns? Saint Vincent has added a second Breast Health Nurse Navigator to provide support, education and advocacy for patients with breast health concerns or a new diagnosis of breast cancer. Working with a team of physicians, lymphedema therapists, genetic counselors and other professionals, they help guide you from diagnosis to treatment.

Saint Vincent is the only hospital in the region to offer patients an onsite genetic counselor.

Emily James, MS, CGC, a licensed genetic counselor, now provides expertise in genetics, inheritable cancer syndromes and counsels patients on their options. She offers genetic counseling for patients at a higher risk for breast cancer, as well as other cancers, including colon cancer.

A SOLUTION FOR

SEVERE ASTHMA

Spring can be a particularly difficult time for those suffering from severe asthma, but at Saint Vincent, Bronchial Thermoplasty (BT) can be the answer. BT is a new, non-drug treatment. This clinically proven procedure has been shown to help control asthma and improve asthma-related quality of life, including decreasing the number of severe asthma attacks, and reducing ER visits and hospitalization for respiratory symptoms.

Saint Vincent is the first and only hospital in northwest Pennsylvania to offer this technology. If you experience symptoms such as those listed below, you may be eligible for Bronchial Thermoplasty: • The need for frequent oral steroid bursts • The need for high-dose combination or multiple inhalers with frequent breakthrough symptoms • More than one emergency room visit or hospital admission in the past year • The frequent need for a rescue inhaler • Nocturnal awakenings • Breakthrough symptoms The complete BT procedure is performed in three separate treatment sessions, each scheduled approximately three weeks apart.

It is an outpatient procedure and is performed under moderate sedation. It typically takes less than an hour to complete a treatment session. During the procedure, a tiny device delivers mild heat to the smooth-muscle tissue, allowing patients to breathe easier and reducing asthma attacks. No incision is needed because the procedure is performed with a bronchoscope.

S P R I N G A LLE R G I ES A N D ASTH M A Everyone loves spring. But unfortunately, with spring comes pollen. While pollen can cause some discomfort for those with spring allergies, it can create serious health issues for those who struggle with asthma. Spring pollens can result in airway inflammation and worsen underlying asthma, sending many people to their doctors, urgent care centers and the emergency room.

There are several strategies you can use to keep your asthma in check while still going outside and enjoying the sunshine and warmer weather.

• Watch the pollen levels and avoid the outdoors when they are higher • After being outside, take a shower and wash your clothing • Don’t hang your sheets and clothing outside to dry, as they can become coated with pollen • Opt for air conditioning rather than opening your windows when pollen counts are high • Set your air conditioner to recirculate so it doesn’t bring in air (and pollen) from outdoors • If possible, hire someone to mow your grass for you and ask them to keep it short. If you must mow your own grass, be sure to wear a mask • Work out indoors when pollen counts are high If you have concerns about spring allergies or asthma, call your primary care physician.

ADVANCED ROBOTIC TECHNOLOGY FOR PARTIAL KNEE REPLACEMENT HELPS REFEREE RETURN TO THE FIELD

It was late Fall of 2015 and, for area sports referee Lee Patton, 60, his longtime goal of refereeing The PIAA High School Football playoff games seemed within sight. He was working his way through the 2015 Erie County High School Football playoff season, believing his crew of officials had a chance to make it to the PIAA state playoff games.

“The goal for the officials, as well as the players, is to get to the playoffs and the championship,” explained Patton.

“Since becoming a football official, the playoffs have been my ultimate goal every year.”

As the 2015 football season progressed, Patton noticed that his left knee was in far more pain than what may typically occur with sore muscles after a series of strongly contested games. While he was able to use ice and rest during the weekdays, it became apparent that the pain was not lessening. Therapy, x-rays and, eventually, an MRI confirmed there was no cartilage or cushioning in the interior portion of his knee. It was what is often called ‘bone on bone’ and was becoming increasingly painful.

Patton regretfully took himself off his football refereeing crew and walked away from the last few games of the football season and his 2015-16 basketball season. As a player facing the same odds, this was not a small setback; this was the end of the season.

Patton believed he might have to give up his career as a football and basketball referee entirely, but Robert Lupo, MD, a surgeon with the Saint Vincent Orthopaedic Institute, offered him the newest minimally invasive treatment option.

“Saint Vincent had invested in Mako, the newest robotic-arm assisted system that provides a precise, less invasive surgery for patients who only need a partial knee replacement,” explained Lupo. In fact, Saint Vincent is the only hospital in the northwestern Pennsylvania region using the Mako Robotic-Arm system for partial knee replacement and total hip replacement procedures. Mako is a surgeon-controlled robotic-arm system that enables accurate alignment and placement of implants.

“Accuracy is the key in planning and performing both partial knee and total hip procedures,” said Dr. Lupo. “For the most ideal outcome, you have to align and position the implants just right and Mako allows us to achieve optimal results at a level of accuracy and reproducibility previously unattainable.”

Osteoarthritis, or “wear and tear” arthritis, is a leading cause of joint damage and disability worldwide, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. In 2011, more than 28 million people in the United States were estimated to have osteoarthritis. It can occur in any joint in the body, but most often develops in weight-bearing joints, such as the hip and knee.

“For patients like Lee Patton, this wear and tear has come from years of playing sports and then continuing with an active, athletic lifestyle,” said Lupo. “We have plenty of ‘younger’ 50, 60 and 70 year olds who want to maintain that level of activity and the Mako partial knee replacement is perfect for them.”

Mako can be used to treat early- to mid-stage osteoarthritis that has not progressed to all three compartments of the knee. The system uses a computed tomography (CT) scan of the patient’s joint to create a three-dimensional map of the surgical area. The robotic-arm then assists the surgeon as damaged bone is cut away, limiting the drilling to areas that were pre-defined in the surgical plan.

Patton was just the second patient at Saint Vincent to undergo a partial knee replacement with the Mako system in January of this year. According to Dr. Lupo, he found exactly what he expected.

“His knee cap and posterior knee were both in good shape, but the interior portion had no cartilage,” said Lupo.

“What I was able to do was work just on that area with the Mako system guiding me to remove the worn bone without affecting the other two compartments of his knee.”

Patton spent two-and-a-half days in the hospital and began intense physical therapy immediately. His goals as an official for high school basketball and football have not changed.

“I really thought I was done officiating,” said Patton. “Now, I am back on track and when the football season starts this summer, I will be ready.” And, like every high school athlete heading into their season, Patton will also be looking for a winning season with his sights once again squarely on making it to the playoff rounds.

She provides a holistic attitude in educating, treating and coordinating the healthcare of patients. Dr. Roman likes to focus on preventative health, women’s health and evidence-based medicine, taking a minimalist approach and paying particular attention to medication reconciliation, to prevent medication issues. She enjoys learning about different cultures, can converse in Polish and dabbles in a few other languages, including German, French and Spanish.

Primary Care

Dr. Travnik earned her doctor of osteopathic medicine degree at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie. She completed a family medicine residency at Saint Vincent, and earned a Master of Public Health degree at Ohio State University. Her special areas of interest include pediatrics and women’s health. She is the busy mother of two small toddlers.

IMPLANTABLE MONITOR HELPS DOCTORS IDENTIFY IRREGULAR HEARTBEAT The government reports that between 2.7 and 6.1 million people in the United States have Atrial Fibrillation (AFib), the most common type of irregular heartbeat. AFib has led to more than 750,000 hospitalizations in the last year and can lead to stroke or heart failure.

Sometimes, AFib can be hard to identify.

For patients experiencing episodes including fainting, dizziness, and heart palpitations, a trip to the ER and an EKG after the episode can sometimes be inconclusive. Now, at Saint Vincent Hospital, a new device is being used to help identify AFib in patients who experience these symptoms.

Saint Vincent electrophysiologists are now providing select patients with the Reveal LINQ™ Insertable Cardiac Monitoring System, the smallest implantable heart monitor on the market. This device is inserted just under the skin in the upper chest area and is able to automatically monitor a patient’s heart before, during and after an episode to determine if it is related to a heart rhythm problem. The recorded data is sent to a monitor to be routinely reviewed by a physician. In addition, alarms can be preset by the overseeing physician, allowing for quick review and treatment of what could normally result in an emergency room visit. Reveal LINQ™ can be easily inserted in an outpatient procedure and can be removed once the reason for the episodes has been properly diagnosed.
