Sister June rocked at The Rock At the home game on December 6, the New Jersey Devils were the stars on the ice. Off the ice, on camera and centerstage was another star, SVA’s Sr. June Favata.

In late October, SVA’s Development Team nominated Sr. June through the Newark Cornerstone Program in recognition of her community service to the City of Newark.

Sponsored by Prudential Center and the Office of Newark’s Mayor The Honorable Ras J. Baraka, the Cornerstone Program is part of the celebratory happenings honoring Newark’s 350th Anniversary.

On November 18, it was announced that Sr. June was one of eight finalists in the Cornerstone Program’s competition! That was followed by an invitation for her to attend the NJ Devils vs Vancouver Canucks game at The Rock (December 6) with a pregame interview scheduled with Prudential. Very reluctantly, Sr. June made her way into the Seton Hall locker room where the interview was conducted and she modestly described her role at Saint Vincent Academy and the school’s impact on the city and beyond.

After the interview, Sr. June was escorted to her seat, ready to relax and watch the game. Shortly thereafter, she saw her image on the jumbotron screen getting hugged by the Devils mascot and recognized as one of Newark’s Cornerstone finalists. It was a rough night on the ice for the hockey players, and a rough night for the unassuming candidate, Sr. June.

By contrast, many teachers and staff were at the game beaming with pride and flaunting their love and support for Sr. June, holding up poster-size signs with Sr. June’s face on them!

Our congratulations to Sr. June on the evening’s event, and our hopes are that she wins the competition and receives the much-deserved recognition for her

dedicated 48 years at Saint Vincent Academy - a role model, mentor and educator guiding young women toward taking their center-stage places in their communities. (The finalist’s prize is a generous one from Prudential - two tickets to all events at The Rock for one year).

The competition is not yet over! To win the title, “Newark’s Cornerstone,” you must receive the highest number of individual votes. Voting is scheduled to open in late February. As we receive voting information from Prudential (www. prucenter.com) we will share it through our website. n

Around School NEWS Day of Reflection

I believe in SVA because ….

SVA faculty and staff held their annual Day of Reflection on February 1. Reflection is a form of community prayer - a coming together, renewing commitments to our Vincentian mission, to each other, and to the students entrusted to us. Our thanks to Sr. June, the chief organizer for the day. Sr. June planned a beautiful prayer service with Biblical passages that spoke to togetherness and community building.

Sr. Connie’s meditation prayer borrowed passages from classical literature. Midday, there was an hour of silent reflection.

Some walked around the campus, others went to the chapel to pray and reflect.

Convening together again, we broke into pairs of two sharing thoughts, feelings and interpretations of what this time of reflection meant. At the end of the prayer service, each one lit a lantern as a symbol of the light - the positive and energized contribution each one brings to this learning community. The prayer service concluded with a peace offering exchange and the song, “Everyday God.” It was a wonderful day of renewal and reaffirmation in this holy place of hope.

SVA’s 20th

Founded in 2012, #GivingTuesday is a designated global day of giving - a social media campaign on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram designed to encourage individual donations to worthy charities.

On November 29, 2016, SVA participated for the first time and did so with success.

In the days leading up to #GivingTuesday, SVA students and teachers completed personal affirmations on large posters that began with, “I believe in SVA because ....” In addition to being posted around school, many were shared on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Then, on #GivingTuesday several faculty and staff members went on Facebook ‘live’ specifically appealing to alums, asking them to reflect back on their days at SVA and to honor those days by making a gift to the school. The response: SVA raised over $5,000.

The development office team also did their own giving back for #GivingTuesday.

The team helped hand out food at the Free Healthy Choice Wednesday Market which takes place every Wednesday at 4pm.

Thank you acknowledgements went out in grateful recognition of the gift-givers.

Counted among them were some firsttime donors. SVA is a not-for-profit school and each year, for four years, tuition aid ($5,700) is offered to each and every student. The cost to educate is twice the tuition charged so fundraising at SVA is a constant challenge. SVA is forever dependent on the generous support of her alumnae, friends, corporations and foundations who believe in the mission of SVA. n

Around School NEWS The Great White Way comes to SVA Every November, students, alums, parents, guardians, siblings and friends gather in Providence Gym with excitement and anticipation.

They gather for the annual Freshman Assembly. This year (November 23), everyone was in for a special treat with Jada Brame ‘20. a new theater piece.

The backdrop was a tribute to Broadway with show tunes from Peter Pan, The Color Purple, The Little Mermaid and Annie. The monologues dealt with the ‘trials and tribulations’ of being a teenager and how, surviving ‘that miserable ordeal’ dreams can be realized.

The students did an amazing job making each scene relatable to audiences of all ages, and the reviews were terrific! The

final scene ended on a positive note as expressed in the

You are Women of Promise On December 9, the juniors received their class rings. The theme of the night was borrowed from Dr. Seuss’s famous book, Oh, The Places We’ll Go. Welcoming remarks were given by Amaya Erawoc ‘18, Brenda Velarde ‘18 and Stephane Raymond ‘18. Stephanie Quarshie ‘18 led the opening prayer followed by the singing of the Alma Mater. African Dance Club members Chugo Emeh ‘18, Besem EttaAshu ‘18, Jada Jensen ‘18, and Shafflyn Kallon ‘18 performed an African dance.

In Ms. Palmer’s remarks she shared the most promising qualities of the junior class and how their togetherness is an example to be mirrored. “Loyalty, faithfulness, genuine love of and support for each other: these are qualities that bind a community together. These are qualities that you, the Class of 2018, exemplify.” She went on to say, “These juniors are among the most genuine,

straightforward, outspoken individuals I’ve ever encountered. We have watched you develop from uncertain, hesitant ‘kiddie-poos’ into beautiful, assertive young women of promise.”

Around School NEWS In the Spirit of Christmas On December 20, SVA put on it’s annual Christmas Concert. The drama club performed an original play written and directed by English teacher Katie Whitley and her husband Brad. The play, Jack Frost Cancels Christmas, was about an evil Jack Frost plotting with his elves to derail Christmas.

In the end, Santa’s faithful elves and loyal toys expose Jack Frost and his evil plot as Drama Club.

Santa reminds us all - with or without presents the spirit of Christmas can never be cancelled.

Along with the Drama Club’s performance, the Glee Club, Handbell Ensemble, Dance Club, African Dance Club, and Latin Dance Club performed their wonderful pieces thoroughly enjoyed by all. Congratulations to drama director Katie Whitley, music director Jacqueline Washack and accompanists Kimberly JaJuan on piano, Bruce Van Hoven on bass, Carol Wooldredge on cello, Tim Nelson on guitar, and Emedin Rivera on percussion.

Around School NEWS Spirit Week !!!

Spirit Week kicked off on January 3rd after a relaxing Christmas break! The New Year began with students returning to their classrooms ready to work but dressed in ridiculous outfits! Day One was Twin Day so the halls were filled with multiple look-alike twins and triplets.

Day Two was Pajama Day. Students and teachers alike dressed in their most comfortable and creative pj’s and Pep Rally. onesies. At day’s end, the Student Forum hosted a movie night after school. The next day was Decades Day with outfits inspired by bygone eras.

Even faculty joined in on the fun! Ms. Yarborough and Ms. Mulinge wore 1970’s attire and big wigs while Ms. Kennedy represented the 1980’s wearing funky leg warmers and colorful sunglasses. The week’s festivities culminated with the Pep Rally. Everyone arrived at school boasting school pride in their blue and gold, ready

to celebrate with one another and officially kick-off the 2017 basketball season. n

There are many ways to “give back” to SVA Tai Beauchamp ‘96 once again found a way to “give back” to SVA. Tai and her long-time friend and philanthropist, Nina Wells, gifted SVA with free movie tickets to see the much acclaimed new film, Hidden Figures. The film tells the true story of three female African-American mathematicians who aided, in a very significant way, NASA’s 1960s space race to get the first man on the moon. Hidden Figures was the surprise best-ensemble winner at the Screen Actors Guild top award ceremony (Los Angeles, January 29). “This story is about

unity,” said Taraji P. Henson, who stars alongside Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae in Hidden Figures. ‘’This story is about what happens when we put our differences aside and we come together as a human race. We win.”

We are most appreciative of this generous gift from Tai and Nina Wells. This movie speaks to grit and determination in the face of resistance. It is also important as a story in American history unknown to most of us. It is a timely gift as we celebrate Black History Month, and it is a timeless gift that serves to encourage women of all races and creeds to work diligently, follow your dreams and be ready to crack the glass ceiling. n

Around School NEWS On November 11, SVA’s long-standing friend and supporter Mr. Jay Hartman accompanied Rev. John M. McCrone, Molly Khona and Terri Jansen of the St. Rose of Lima Women’s Auxiliary (Short Hills) to SVA. They met with their 20162017 scholarship recipient Solcrye Burga ‘18. The St. Rose Women’s Auxiliary generously funds 4-year scholarships for SVA students and they have the gratitude of the entire SVA community. n On November 23, the faculty and staff were surprised to find personalized notes of gratitude and appreciation posted all over the walls and doors in the faculty room! The notes were written by a student or an alum. n On December 1, SVA held its third Freshman for a Day event. Typically, SVA hosts two events each year but the demand from interested eighth-graders made it necessary to host a third. Again, a huge thank you to the event organizers and student reps for showing our guests the hidden treasure that is SVA. January acceptance letters went out to +150 eighth-graders who selected SVA as one of their high school choices. n On December 2, the senior and junior Peer Leaders hosted a celebratory ice cream social congratulating the freshmen on their new and wonderful Thanksgiving Assembly program. Not to be ignored, the sophomores had a pizza social of their own! n

On December 2, representatives from Bloomfield College made an onsite visit.

Fourteen seniors were accepted for admission to Bloomfield College. Four of them received Presidential Scholarships (valued between $7,000 and $20,000), and ten others received Success Grants (valued between $5,000 and $13,000). n

In early December, Lead for Diversity members hosted their first ‘potluck dinner’ with homemade cultural dishes to share. The club meets to voice opinions on social topics of concern to them (bias, racism, sexism). They work on educational projects to combat intolerance and celebrate diversity. n On December 12, a cross-graded group of twenty-two SVA students with a common interest in STEM careers attended an event at The Newark Museum, co-sponsored by the museum and the CIO Department of Prudential.

At Team Pru’s helm was SVA Advisory Board President Mike Long and SVA alumna Gwendolyn Peterson-Edwards ’82. Throughout the day, the Pru employees in STEM-related careers interacted on a one-on-one basis with students extolling the career prospects and earning potential for women in the technology-based fields. The day’s activities included breakfast, a competitive scavenger hunt, lunch, and an awards ceremony. A big thanks to Prudential and The Newark Museum for this valuable and fun experience! n

PBS to Interview two of our own On January 19, we received an invitation for Sr. June and Freshman Team teacher and alumna Ms. Jo-Ann Caporaso ‘65 to be interviewed on the PBS program, Life & Living with Joanna Gagis. Our friends at Century 21 Construction recommended SVA for the segment. On Wednesday, February 8, Sr. June and Ms. Cap made their way to Tristar Studios in Fairfield to

be interviewed! Our thanks go out to Century 21 Construction for making this exciting opportunity possible. We will be posting the airing date on our social media pages so please keep an eye out! n

On December 15, in the spirit of Christmas, the convocation committee celebrated Advent with a skit about bringing joy to others. Guidance counsellor Ms. Jackie Kennedy introduced everyone to a boy named Kaheem.

Registered with the Make A Wish Foundation, Kaheem has leukemia. His wish was to be a superhero. Through the foundation, Kaheem received a top secret letter from the superhero council officially appointing him a superhero. SVA students and faculty celebrated his appointment by creating superhero posters and chanting his name as Ms. Kennedy videotaped them. The confirmation tape was then sent to Superhero Kaheem! Keep Kaheem in your prayers for a full recovery.

(The SVA pictures can be seen on SVA’s Facebook page). And that’s how you celebrate Christmas! n On December 16, art teacher Ms. Lynn Mullins and her students hosted a Makers’ Fair. Students sold their handmade Christmas gift items - ornaments, drawings, crocheted hats, pins, and the hot item of the moment, choker necklaces. Homemade baked goods were also sold. Ms. Mullins donated some of her own creations for sale and sent the proceeds to St. John’s Soup Kitchen along with student donations. The Makers’ Fair raised $160 for St. John’s Soup Kitchen.

Our thanks to the program sponsors. n On December 21, the faculty and staff celebrated the joys of Christmas together at their annual Christmas luncheon hosted at Belleville’s Chandelier restaurant. n On January 5, Kayla Person-Archie ‘20 was officially inducted as freshman class president during Convocation and sworn in by Student Forum President Renee Halsey ‘17. Congratulations, Kayla. We look forward to the great work you will do this year. n At the January 5th Convocation, the student body delivered a special tribute and moment of silence in honor of Sr. Maureen Killough, sister of our beloved Sr. Margaret. Sr. Maureen was called home to God on December 21. n During Convocation on January 12th, the Student Forum and the Class of 2017 held a special memorial tribute honoring their much-loved classmate, Stephanie Rivera ‘17. Stephanie passed away on January 17, 2015. The special dedication was a reminder that while she is gone, she is not forgotten. n Congratulations to all the winners of the Literary Magazine’s Creative Writing and Artwork contest. Throughout the months of October and November original poems and artwork were accepted with over 30 pieces submitted. Congratulations to the poetry winners - Destiny Starks ‘19 won first place with her piece, “If Walls Could Talk.” Second place went to Amaya Erawoc ‘18 for, “Real Eyes (Realize).”

Eliana Auriemma ‘17 took the third place win with, “To My Grandfather.” In the artwork category, two artists shared the first place win - Mileena Torres ‘17 and Denielle Plummer ‘17. Congratulations to all. The magazine will be available in May. n

On January 13th (the Friday before midterm exams), the senior class hosted a multicultural “de-stress” potluck in the cafeteria. Senior class president Eunice Chidinma Obi ‘17 organized the event saying, “It was something we needed to take the stress off.” Ethnic foods from Africa, Haiti and South America were shared with great pride. And to be noted, good food and good company does reduce stress! n Campus Ministry hosted a Letters to Our Troops Program on February 8th.

Students composed letters of thanks and encouragement to the women and men who courageously serve our country in the US Army. n On January 31, SVA’s celebrity alum and Advisory Board member Tai Beauchamp ‘96 came to speak to the freshman class. She was able to squeeze in a visit just after wrapping up filming Window Warriors on GSN where she was a celebrity judge. Tai offered advice on how to conduct yourself on social media.

She challenged the Class of 2020 to a 30-day period wherein they would - (1) post only positive comments about themselves or others on Twitter and Instagram; (2) be more social in face to face encounters and say five affirming things to a classmate(s) every day. n

Alumnae NEWS IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Class Reps!

SVA’s Class Rep Program took off in full swing this year! On January 19, alumnae from the Class of 1960 through the Class of 2016 convened at SVA for a fellowship meeting and discussion of objectives and expectations.

Reps serve an important role as communicators and envoys who keep their sister alums aware of happenings, achievements and needs at the school. They also work with the alumnae association and the development office organizing alumnae fundraisers and other social events.

During the meeting, class reps shared their thoughts and ideas on how they can play a role in showcasing the value of an SVA education and reminding one another of the moral obligation every alum has to the school.

With over 44 classes represented, we are still missing reps from the classes of: 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1971, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1986, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2011, 2015.

Patricia Firlan DeGennaro ‘77 and her husband Matthew celebrated their daughter Margaret’s wedding in November 2016. Margaret married her Drexel University sweetheart at a ceremony in PA. Their daughter Felicia will wed Randy Peace in May and they’ll tie the knot in NC. n Chane’ Jones ‘09 completed her studies at Seton Hall Law School in December.

She plans to secure a judicial clerkship in trial and litigation. Congratulations Chane’! n Ratna Michael-Gunaratnum ‘11 will graduate with her master’s in political science from Rutgers-New Brunswick later this year. n Latifah Doobay ‘11 graduated (May 2015) with a degree in finance from the University of Maryland - Eastern Shore.

Latifah is currently working at Mitchell Titus, the largest minority-owned and controlled accounting firm in the US. n Stephanie Njeru ‘13 is finishing up her final year at Juniata College in

PA where she majors in global health communications. She visited SVA during Spirit Week to see her former teachers before going back to school to fulfill her duties as a senior resident assistant. n Peta-Gaye Swaby ‘13 is majoring in psychology and clinical social work at Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) and will graduate in May. In addition to being an FDU student, she is a mentor for a freshman with autism spectrum disorder. Later this year, Peta-Gaye will begin her graduate program in clinical social work at NYU. n Samantha Ortiz ‘13 had an end of the year surprise with a December 31 proposal from Omar Lopez. Best wishes to the couple on their engagement. n Jailene Ortiz ‘16 represented Miss St. Rose of Lima in the 2017 Miss New Jersey USA Pageant in October 2016.

She’s enrolled at Eastern International College studying diagnostic medical sonography. n

Congratulations to Kayla Wilson ‘17 - volleyball star athlete among outstanding high school and college/university female athletes.

Kayla was honored at the National Girls & Women in Sports Day at Seton Hall University. n

Basketball Team captures second place in the Dr. Rose Battaglia’s Christmas Tournament and fourth place in the Super Essex Conference Varsity Basketball Team.

St. Vincent’s varsity basketball team kicked off the 2016-17 season on a high note at the annual Dr. Rose Battaglia’s Christmas Tournament in Elizabeth. Competing in the White Division, the Lady Panthers won two of its three games, and brought home the second place trophy. Jewel Barnett ‘18 along with Alexis Brito ‘19 (co-captain of this year’s team) were named SVA’s most valuable players for the tournament.

In regular season play, St. Vincent’s competed in the 8-team Freedom Division of the Super Essex Conference and faced several cross-town rivals including Central High and East Side from Newark, as well as Montclair Immaculate and Lacordaire, former rivals from the North Jersey Catholic Girls’ League. After a slow start, the Lady Panthers came on strong in the second half of the season and nailed down a fourth place finish by avenging an early season loss to Christ the King by defeating them at home.

Rookie of the Year for the varsity is Nia Marshall ‘20 who led the team in points scored during the season. Jewel Barnett ‘18, SVA’s second high scorer, and Tenasha Simpson ‘18 who led the team in rebounds, shared “Most Improved” honors. Two “Hustle” awards were presented, both to speedy guards

who played out front on the 1-3-1 zone; they were Ajewell Wright ‘18 and Alexis Carthens ‘19. Finally, Makiyjah Kelly ‘17, who came on as point guard in the second half of the season and helped turn the season around, was given the “Will to Win” award.

The Lady Panthers’ junior varsity team featured the most talented freshman class seen at SVA in many years, talent which enabled them to break a longstanding losing streak and set them on the road to future wins. In addition to Nia Marshall ‘20 who went straight to the varsity, freshmen were presented with four of the five St. Vincent’s team awards for the JV. Center Chinenye Anemelu ‘20, who led the team in points scored is this year’s “Rookie of the Year.” “Most Improved Player” honors went to forward Nitchaika Saint-Sulne ‘20, while speedy point guard Kiara Alvarez ‘20 received the “Hustle” award. SVA’s “Will to Win” award was shared by Ashanti Gilland-Belen ‘20, the JV’s second high scorer, and Brittney Benjamin ‘18 who split playing time between the varsity and the JV. In summarizing the season, Coach Alm observed - ”This was a learning season.

All but one of our players are returning next year, and we hope to do better, especially if some of this year’s JV players improve their skills.” n
