The Origin of the Seal

The above emblem served as the first official seal of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools in the early 18th century, prior to the adoption of the familiar Signum Fidei, as seen in the Saint Mary’s Seal. Although the use of the Magi's star as “the sign of faith” greatly expresses the commitment of the Brothers and the ultimate intent of Lasallian Educational Pedagogy, the image above is a reminder to the Brothers and to all Lasallian Educators of the truly relational nature of their work as educators.

Shown in the seal Saint Joseph, recognizable because he holds the Lily, depicted with Jesus Christ, who is a young boy. John Baptist de La Salle continually reminded the Brothers of the example of Saint Joseph. Catholic Christian tradition speaks of the important role that Joseph played in the life of Jesus. Along with his wife Mary, Joseph served as Jesus' foster-father, raising Jesus to be a man of Faith, and guiding him through his own example of justice and integrity. It is traditionally considered that Joseph also taught Jesus the trade of carpentry, for during the years of his ministry people consider Jesus to be, "the Carpenter's son". Joseph understood that he had a great part in God's work, in raising the boy Jesus; God gave him Jesus so that Joseph might educate him and love him.

These notions are at the heart of everything Lasallian. The Brothers and their partner Lasallian Educators see their relationship with students as one in which God has given these young people to them so that they might educate them and love them. The Brothers and all Lasallian Educators, like Saint Joseph, are called to be an example of integrity and justice, guiding the young people God entrusts to their care, through the challenges of the process of maturity and growth, to a future role in building the Kingdom of God.

The Philosophy of the Enrichment Week Program

Saint John Baptist de La Salle believed that Lasallian Educators are with their students from morning to evening; this meant that the education envisioned would be characterized by a fraternal relationship between teacher and students. The Lasallian Educator is totally immersed in the life of his or her students sharing their interests, their worries, and their hopes. Lasallian Educators are not so much schoolmasters pounding truths into their heads, as they an older brother and sister who help them to discern within themselves the call of the Spirit, to come to a better understanding of what is real, to recognize their abilities, and thereby to discover progressively their place in the world.

A part of Saint Mary’s mission is to educate the whole person by promoting the intellectual, spiritual, physical, and social development of each student while at the same time creating community. The administration, faculty, and staff are committed to living this commitment to educate the whole person through the curriculum, co-curricular programs, and day-to-day contact with students. Enrichment Week provides an additional means to develop and extend the school’s mission. During this special week each student will have an opportunity to choose and participate in a course that is of particular interest to him/her. The curriculum for Enrichment Week is developed by the faculty and contains a mix of academic, travel, career exploration, cultural, and recreational classes.

Participation in Enrichment Week is mandatory for all students, but the choice of specific classes is up to each individual student and his/her family. Since the program is an addition to, rather than a part of the regular curriculum, courses carry fees, which cover the cost of their materials, equipment, and/or transportation.

Please look carefully at the course offerings and make the choices appropriate for your children, paying particular attention to when and where each course meets each day. A lunch fair will be held in early January allowing students the opportunity to learn more about each course.

Students will be asked to choose 3 courses and register for those courses that same week.

Course rosters will be posted by the beginning of February.

Policies & Procedures Enrichment Week Courses All Enrichment Week courses are philosophically based on our Lasallian Educational Outcomes (LEOs). Each course is developed and/or coordinated by a Saint Mary’s faculty member. All courses correspond with one or more of the following categories. Students are expected and encouraged to take a course from a different category each year. In this catalog, courses are identified according to a Course Category number as indicated below: 1. Educational and/or Career Exploration 2. Cultural Experience 3. Recreation and/or Physical Wellness 4. Service and/or Spirituality Priority Numbers Priority numbers are randomly generated and assigned to each student beginning in their freshman year. These numbers are used when scheduling students into their selected courses. Students with lower numbers are more likely to get their first or second choice. Almost every student is enrolled in one of their three choices.

Course Registration Students will register for Enrichment Week courses online through our Saint Mary’s website beginning Friday, January 6.

Registration forms need to be printed out by each student, then signed by a parent/guardian, and returned to homeroom no later than Wednesday, January 11, 2017; forms will also be collected during homeroom throughout that week. Failure to turn in a signed registration form will result in the student losing their priority number causing them to be scheduled into courses last.

The Enrichment Week Registration Form is not only used to register the student in a course, but also it serves as the permission slip for the student to participate.

No Repeated Courses Students are expected to take a different course each year and they are encouraged to take one class from each Course Category throughout their four years at Saint Mary’s. Students are not allowed to repeat a course unless approved by the course instructor and the Enrichment Week Director prior to registration in the course.

Transportation Many courses require some off-campus travel. The majority of off-campus travel is usually done via public transportation (BART or bus). Since many students have BART tickets or a bus pass, students are responsible for the costs of local public transportation to course sites, unless otherwise specified in the final course itinerary. Transportation outside of the Bay Area will be incorporated into the course cost and arranged by the school. We are always in need of parent volunteers to drive; parent drivers help keep course costs down. If you would like to volunteer as a driver, please contact Cathy Molinelli via email at cmolinelli@stmchs.org.

Course Itinerary Every teacher will provide the school and each registered student with a course itinerary. This itinerary will provide dayto-day details, including meeting and departure times, activity schedules, locations for each day, and transportation information.

Enrichment Week Parent Meetings for Overnight Trips & Immersions Some courses require that a parent/guardian and the student come to the Enrichment Week Parent Meeting to meet the teacher, complete any other required permission forms and obtain insurance/health care information. Some travel courses, and all immersion programs have been sponsoring on-going meetings with students and parents. The required forms for these courses will be completed in one of these sessions. For those enrolled in these courses, the students and their parents will be required to attend the Enrichment Week Student & Parent Meeting on Monday, February 13, at 7:00 pm. This is a mandatory meeting for parents and students.

Failure to attend this meeting may result in a student’s inability to participate in an overnight/travel course. Students traveling with the Immersion Programs will also meet at 7pm in Auditorium that same evening.

Paying for Enrichment Week Courses For courses under $300, Saint Mary’s will bill families by mail in early February for the full cost of the course. For courses over $300, the fee will be divided into two installments. The first installment should be mailed in February and the second installment in March. If you receive financial assistance from Saint Mary’s or your tuition account is not current, and you plan to take a course over $1000, prior clearance must be given by the Finance Office. Financial Assistance There is limited financial assistance available for the Immersion Programs only. If you are requesting financial assistance please contact Calvin Deng, Director of Finance via email at cdeng@stmchs.org before the October deadline. Please note: All financial assistance has been allocated for this Enrichment Week.

Scholarships & Grants Students are encouraged to apply for The Cameron Fuller-Holloway Memorial Fun Fund Grant ~ details are provided in a separate handout. This is NOT a needs-based scholarship – ALL students are welcome to apply.

No Refund Students missing a course or a portion of a course due to an excused or unexcused absence or any tardiness will not be refunded money used to pay for the course. Most courses have required prepayments for materials, supplies, outside instructors, and transportation.

Cancellation of a Course or Increase in Fees As courses are developed, teachers create a course budget and cost. Sometimes admission fares, transportation, or food costs change from the time the course was developed to the time the course is actually held. If there is an increase in course cost, students will be notified in advance.

If a course is cancelled due to lack of enrollment or for another unforeseen reason, students will be offered an opportunity to join another course that has an opening.

Transcripts Enrichment Week courses will appear on students’ transcripts.

All school policies described in the Student Parent Handbook are in effect during Enrichment Week.

Attendance & Tardies • All school polices regarding attendance and tardiness are in place during Enrichment Week.

• If a student is ill during Enrichment Week, parents need to phone in the absence to the Attendance Hotline (510) 559-6211 in our Main Office. Notes are required when the student returns to school.

• Students are required to complete the course in which they have enrolled. If a student misses a portion of the course because of an excused absence, s/he must make up the hours missed through an individual internship that must be approved by the Enrichment Week Program Director. The internship must be completed before the end of the school year.

• The Enrichment Week Director will handle all unexcused tardies. Students who are off-campus and have unexcused tardies will serve detention by arrangement with the Vice Principal of Student Affairs.

• If a student misses a half-session (over 2 hours) it will be considered a full absence.

• If a student misses a portion of the course due to an unexcused absence, it will be considered truancy; please refer to the Student/Parent Handbook for consequences on truancy.

Behavior Issues during Enrichment Week • Inappropriate behavior will incur consequences during the Enrichment Week course, as well as disciplinary action at Saint Mary’s upon the students’ return.

• On-Campus: A student who is sent out of class while taking a course on campus is to report to the Main Office.

The Enrichment Week Director will determine appropriate disciplinary action.

• Off-Campus Day Courses: If a student on an off-campus course is asked to leave for behavioral reasons, the instructor of the course will phone the school and speak to the Vice Principal for him/her to determine whether the student will be picked up by a parent at the course site or the instructor will send the student home after consultation with the student’s parents.

• Off-Campus Overnight and Travel Courses: All school policies described in the Student-Parent Handbook are in effect during Enrichment Week, regardless of where the course is held. At the required parent meeting(s), the faculty member will discuss with parents what the procedure will be if a student needs to be sent home from the activity for his/her behavior. Inappropriate behavior will incur consequences during the Enrichment Week course, as well as disciplinary action at Saint Mary’s upon the students’ return.

Our week’s activities may include visits to the Edible School Yard and Chez Panisse Café in Berkeley, a day adventure in San Francisco or beyond, hiking, Zumba aerobics, service at St. Vincent Day Home, delicious lunches at local restaurants, and making and eating our own potstickers at a Chinese restaurant. The Saint Mary’s Amazing Race course is based off of the popular CBS game show designed for those students looking to be challenged in a competitive yet fun and spirited atmosphere. The race is split into five days of competition, where teams will be required to deduce clues, navigate themselves in unfamiliar areas, interact with local businesses, perform physical and mental challenges, and use public transportation options.

Students will have a daily budget provided for each leg of the race - this will include money for meals and travel necessary to complete that day of competition. Teams will accumulate points at the end of each leg daily and by the final day of the race, the first place team is determined by points accumulated and will be awarded the Grand Prize.

You will sample Italian, Mexican, Chinese, Japanese and Iberian cuisine, see Mission Dolores, enjoy the eccentric markets of Chinatown, and bike across the Golden Gate Bridge—a nearly identical version, the Ponte 25 de Abril, spans the Tagus river in Portugal! We will cover basics such as wiper blade replacement, checking fuses, changing bulbs, oil changes, jumping a battery safely, inspecting brakes, and changing a tire safely.

We can cover other topics as participants are interested. Just ask!

Complete brand building from top to bottom! In this course you be the designer, creator, printer, marketer and salesperson, learning what it takes to start a clothing brand. Not only will be the masterminds behind the name, concept and logo design, but you will also be the hand workers in screen coating, image burning and shirt printing.

We will take excursions to various brand storefronts around the east bay to for inspiration from neighboring brands.

You will work as a unit to produce a product and conclude the week with a pop-up shop to show off and sell your work! Careers in Athletics

Interested in a career in sports? We will visit the front offices of the Bay Area sports scene, both at the college and professional levels to learn more about careers in the athletics. Learn about sales, marketing, HR practices – it takes a lot of people to create a successful sports franchise. Visits may include visits to Cal, Oracle Arena, Levi’s Stadium as well as a trip to AT&T Park to tour the SF Giant’s ballpark. Students will also have the opportunity to explore the world of sports media, visiting both a TV and radio studio.

Creating Music with the Family Jules Band

Haven’t you always wanted to pick up an instrument and learn how to play it? Or wanted to re-create a song you heard on the radio or even create your own music? (Yes, there are other resources other than Youtube). In this course you will explore the lives of professional musicians as well as acquire the skills necessary to create and perform music in our Band Pavilion at school. The Family Jules Band has agreed to share their musical knowledge for a week to tap into Musical Aspects such as: Instruments, Forming a Band, Songwriting, Recording Production and Performance. Get ready to build a relationship with your fellow peers to form different bands that highlight musical genres such as: Pop (Radio), Rock, and Hip Hop. We will not also form bands but establish bonds with one another to record an album and perform together. Let’s Band! Prior musical knowledge is recommended but not required.

Travel the globe through the comfort of the kitchen, in our one of a kind hands-on cooking class series, How to Cook Like a Chef. Over the five days, we'll learn the techniques, tricks, and tips that will teach you how to cook beyond the recipe and create your own delicious dishes from scratch, just like professional chefs. Digital Photography: Make York Camera Work for You

The difference between taking a snapshot and taking a photograph is just a little bit of knowledge and a whole lot of fun! Join this Digital Photography course and get to know some simple tricks that will take your picture taking to the next level. We will explore: Exposure Settings, High Dynamic Range Photography (HDR), depth of field, freezing the moment, using blur, nighttime exposures, fun portraits, and action shots. We will start each day learning how to make your camera do something cool then hit the road and put into practice what we learned. And, since cool pictures can only be taken in cool places, we will explore some of the more scenic areas around the Bay. We’ll take in the urban jungle of downtown San Francisco, take a boat to Alcatraz Island, walk up (then down!) Filbert Street to Coit Tower and take nighttime shots from the north side of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Discovering Music Around the Bay

Together, let’s explore the world of music as a form of entertainment, artistic expression, and professional endeavor.

Students will be exposed to various genres of music, as well as jobs in the music field. Meet Elmo the DJ for a hands-on lesson in scratching, mixing and fun! Participants will get to learn the basics of the hardware and software involved, and lean basic DJ techniques for beat making on the turntable. No proficiency on any instrument is required for the course, just a love of music! Field trips will include shows of live performances, recording studios, and educational facilities. Some activities may be held during evening hours.

Earn your required Driver Training Hours and your Driver Education together with one course. Students must be 15 ½ years of age by March 6. Students will complete the required Drivers Education course during Enrichment Week.

Come and challenge yourself for a week of fun and excitement! This course will include activities that are both individual as well as team sports. Then sign up for this course! We will also add a competitive day of service at a site to be determined.

NatureBridge in Olympic Park, Washington (Travel)

This nationally recognized program of field science takes students to the heart of some of our nation’s favorite National Parks. The program began in Yosemite National Park and has spread nationally to provide student access and instruction in multiple locations. Students do not need to camp or cook in campsites as the program uses the park’s lodging in heated cabins and cafeteria system to feed and house participants during the six day sessions.

During Enrichment Week, students will explore NatureBridge’s campus on Lake Crescent.

This is a six-day, five-night program to the Olympic Peninsula of Washington. The environmental education available covers a range of habitats from the seashore and tide pool exploration to rain forest investigations to a variety of inland evergreen habitats and may even include snowshoeing up on Hurricane Ridge. The actual decisions about the areas to be visited will be made by the group as a whole once all the participants are known.

NatureBridge feeds and houses participants in their new facility, the historic Rosemary Inn on Lake Crescent. We will travel to the park from the Bay Area via a combination of methods: airplane to the Seattle-Tacoma Airport, van to the ferry, the ferry between Edmonds and Kingston, and a van again to the middle of the park.

Participants can come from any grade level and need no previous experience. Students must be willing to take part in all the group activities. The cost of the trip includes all meals and transportation in the Northwest. Some additional money will be necessary for personal expenses. Clothing and equipment will be discussed in meetings prior to leaving.

Your opportunity to explore all things Disney begin with understanding the road you az6aucre on (Saint Mary’s), where it is expected to lead you (College) and how that will lead to a career (with Disney). This course will help develop an understanding of preparation to lead a full career in a field that will best suit YOU. We will identify your goals, ambitions, dreams and HOPE for career. Then work back from there with determining the correct college major, college, and certifications to get you to GOAL! Monday will be an introduction to Career & Personal Planning to discuss personality, traits, and qualities. Tuesday we will visit the Walt Disney Family Museum to further develop a sense of Walt’s vision and dedication- then discuss college majors. Wednesday we travel to the House of the Mouse - Disneyland. To get a sense of Walt’s vision- COME TRUE. Thursday we continue with employment exploration as we visit Human Resources for the Disneyland Resort. Friday we M-I-C see ya real soon to Mickey and Friends as we begin the journey back to SMCHS with stops into SoCal colleges.

Students have the opportunity to develop something challenging, interesting, and rewarding. Be creative! Be productive! Spend the week making a difference in our community by volunteering or explore possible career opportunities. Combining two areas can also lead to very interesting programs. Juniors are encouraged to use the IIP opportunity to explore various campuses. Projects must involve a minimum of 25 hours of work, activity, etc., and a written and a visual assignment will be required. Details will be provided. Mandatory meetings are required. There is a $20 processing fee for all IIP’s.

Immersion: Vin We Non - Haiti

Vin We Non - Haiti is designed to give students a firsthand experience of the conditions on the ground in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Students will be introduced to the history, culture, and economic, political and spiritual aspects of Haiti. As part of the immersion program, students will focus on four areas of personal development: faith, social justice, service, and reflection. The students will also be given an opportunity to begin to establish relationships with the Haitian people including high school students. The group will stay at the Matthew 25 House, and directly engage in service projects in Port-Au-Prince.

God’s light shines brightly in the people of India, especially acknowledged by the frequent Tamil greeting “Vanakkam”, an acknowledgement of God’s presence in the other person. As part of the immersion program, students will focus on four areas of personal development: faith, social justice, service, and reflection. In this immersion experience, with the Brothers and Lasallians of Southern India, students from Saint Mary’s live and work with the Brothers, students, and orphans of Boys Town and St. Joseph’s Boys Village and Girls Village.

Immersion: Oki-Ni-Soo-Ka-Wa (Blackfeet Reservation, MT)

Oki Ni Soo Ka Wa is an opportunity for students to travel to Browning, Montana to participate in a service and cultural immersion on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. While in Montana, students will work with elementary school students at De La Salle Blackfeet School, and have other experiences to learn from the elders of the community. Immersion participants will prepare lessons for the school-age groups, which could include science, art, and/or history activities.

As part of the immersion program, students will focus on four areas of personal development: faith, social justice, service, and reflection. To prepare for the immersion experience, students will study aspects of Blackfeet culture through readings, videos, and discussions. Upon return from the experience, there will be follow-up meetings to share the experience with the Saint Mary’s community.

Immersion: El Otro Lado - Tucson

El Otro Lado is an immersion trip for students who want to understand the immigration issue from various perspectives, including humanitarians, Native Americans, and the federal government. This program is guided by the outcomes of faith, community, simplicity, service, social justice, and safety. Each day the students and adults learn, reflect, and pray about their experiences in the desert or the border city. The goal of the program is that students develop an understanding of the issue of immigration while reflecting and sharing their perspectives on the responsibility to serve and act justly. Students from Saint Mary’s partner with students from San Miguel High School, another Lasallian school, throughout the experience.

Boston, MA and New York

Classic bridges, cathedrals, cobblestoned streets & gold tipped towers are just a few of the features that make the Prague cityscape so stunning. Largely untouched by World War II, the historic center of Prague has been placed on the UNESCO world heritage list. We will enjoy its vibrant culture & explore its wonders. We will also study the remnants of Prague’s Jewish ghetto--including the haunting, beautiful Jewish cemetery—whose inhabitants were eradicated by the Nazis in World War II….Poland's third largest city, Krakow, was once the royal capital of Poland. It emerged from World War II unscathed--unlike the rest of the country. The historical center of Krakow is a UNESCO world heritage list. We will explore charming, compact Old Town, which still houses the largest square in all of Europe. We will also study the former Jewish Ghetto known as Kazmierz to appreciate Jewish life during World War II. Central to this part of our journey is our day-trip to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where we will study firsthand the Nazis’ most notorious death camp….Finally, Budapest has endured war & empire to emerge as a jewel. Split in two by the Danube River & linked by a series of bridges, both sides of the river claim places on the UNESCO world heritage list: Buda Castle, Danube Embankment & Andrassy Avenue. We will study its tragedy & its glory. World War I ended its role as capital of the Austro-Hungarian empire, but World War II devastated the city. 38,000 of its civilians died in the bloody siege between the German/Hungarian & Soviet/Romanian armies. Budapest, which boasted a large, prosperous Jewish community in the early 1900s and was often called the "Jewish Mecca," lost as much as 40% of its Jewish population by 1945.

From there we will visit the Mississippi Delta, the birthplace of the blues, and eat cuisine that feeds the soul. In addition, we’ll visit famous civil rights locations throughout Memphis, Mississippi and Louisiana.
