As I reflect on the 2022-2023 school year, I am struck by the amount of joy we experienced throughout the course of the year. Between long-standing traditions, new activities and experiences, the return of immersive learning trips, and just day-to-day-life at the Academy, it was a remarkably positive year. We are blessed to have students, faculty and staff who put forth so much effort and care for one another each and every day.

Community and connection are at the heart of all we do at the Academy. We strive to grow and learn from one another as we build relationships and are deliberate about the climate and culture of the Academy. Through deep engagement with one another and the sharing of each individual’s authentic gifts, our students, faculty, staff and alumnae make this community special. We value them and their myriad of contributions.

The Class of 2023 served as stellar role models and leaders for the rest of the student body. They were positive, engaged and utterly committed to making sure their sisters shared a full school year experience with them. As leaders, artists, athletes and scholars, they found much success. They set records, earned awards and recognitions, and served each other and the dear neighbor, all of which you will read about in this edition of UPDATE. As we finally returned to pre-pandemic arrangements, we were able to experience how the Tree Ceremony, “Walk of the Roses” and Commencement are such beautiful and beloved traditions. We will miss the Class of 2023 and wish them all the best on their next adventures.

It has also been an impressive year in terms of our faculty and staff. Two teachers were recognized for their terrific work by regional and state-wide associations. Others have worked within the community to plan student activities, trips, retreats, masses and prayer services, community gatherings, spirit-building events and more. There is tremendous creativity, heart and energy that goes into the work of the school. We are blessed with passionate, dedicated and talented faculty and staff.

We have also enjoyed a variety of alumnae engagement activities throughout this past year. In the spring, we had a wonderful alumnae luncheon that supports scholarships for our students, and we also celebrated an Alumnae Induction Ceremony with the Class of 2023. We held our first Alumnae Happy Hour at the Public House and an inspiring Women’s Evening of Reflection. Recognizing our “25 Under 35” alumnae is a labor of love, and we hope you have enjoyed getting to know them through social media posts and the articles in this issue of the magazine. Saint Joseph Academy alumnae are truly remarkable women!

Summer is a time for reflection on the past year and planning for the next year to come. As we look to the future of the Academy, we can do so with great confidence and pride in what we have accomplished. Our vibrant community will continue to work together to give our students all that they need to grow and thrive.

With gratitude,

Junior Professional Shadowing Helps Juniors Explore Future Careers

Junior year at the Academy is an exciting time for students. Members of the Class of 2024 begin preparing for the future by taking ACT/SAT exams and researching college/university choices. They also participate in the Junior Professional Shadowing Program, which is an immersive experience in a potential career of their choice. This unique shadowing opportunity allows students to explore possible career paths as they begin their college/university search process.

Students provide a reflection of their time and share if there is continued interest in the career after the experience. Below are some highlights from the Class of 2024’s Junior Professional Shadowing experiences.

Madilyn Jarc ’24 shadowed Dr. Michael Shaughnessy, Ophthalmologist at NOMS University Ophthalmology. “Dr. Shaughnessy performs surgeries, eye exams and treatments. When I shadowed, I got to observe a variety of eye surgeries like cataract removal, retina surgery, eye muscle surgery and even facelift surgery. I got to stand in the operating room and watch all the doctors and nurses working as a united team to treat the patient in the best way possible. What surprised me the most was how simple and normal it is for surgeons to feel completely calm during operations. I was apprehensive about watching surgeries, so it is just wild to me that this is just another day at work for them.”

Olivia Tytko ’24 shadowed Mr. Kim Fatica, Sr. Media Technology Strategist at University Hospitals in Cleveland. “While I was in my shadow experience there was a big event that was going on that consisted of two surgical procedures being broadcasted live to the American College Cardiologists’ annual meeting. This procedure would also be recorded and sent all over the world for other physicians to see and learn from. I was with Mr. Fatica and the production team that was hired to set up cameras, video record and broadcast the procedure to New Orleans where the conference was taking place. I was able to overlook what the production crew was doing and see what technology they were using to make everyone able to see what was happening during the procedure. At the end of the event I was able to go to the switch board and use the cameras that were used to view the inside of the procedure room. It was an amazing experience!”

Amelia Grealis ’24 shadowed Mr. George Santosuosso, Structural Engineer at the NASA Glenn Center. “During my shadow experience it was really cool to be shown the whole campus of the Federal Bureau of NASA. Near the end of the day we went to one of the research facilities and what really surprised me was the cool tactics of how virtual reality (VR) could be shown in the Science world of mathematics and physics.” Amelia shared that the shadowing changed her outlook on this occupation, “It grew my fascination even more into Engineering. I have learned that I really like hands-on trials and like to create the parts of the missions.”

One of the joys of life in a school is how the community celebrates the conclusion of each year with graduation celebrations for the outgoing class. So much of the hardship of the past three years arose from the sense of loss or disorientation as these celebrations and traditions were impacted by pandemic restrictions and modifications. And so it was with great joy that we celebrated graduation this year in a state of relative peace, with a return to the usual rhythms and routines, just as we have with so many other areas of our lives. These past few years have taught us to appreciate even more the things we already loved, not to take anyone or anything for granted.

They have also reminded us that we must never lose hope because through Christ we overcome everything. We are risen and born anew.

Following the Easter season, in the glorious late spring of Northeast Ohio,

graduation is a perfect time for us to celebrate our new beginning, our spiritual renewal. The flowers on campus are in full bloom, birdsong fills the air, and our memories of the cold winter have faded into the past. The young maple tree we blessed this year in association with the Tree Ceremony celebration has been planted with great potential in the same spot where one of our stately oak trees once stood; that oak having been a featured presence at one of the first Tree Ceremony celebrations a hundred years ago or so.

I spoke to Sr. Antoinette Campanella '44, CSJ and Sr. Madeline Lammermeier'44, CSJ two days after the graduation, at the wake for Sr. Patricia Finn, CSJ. They told me how much they and the other Sisters enjoyed the “Walk of the Roses” from their special parade viewing location, right at the step-off on campus. They also shared that 79 years ago they made the same walk themselves on the day of their graduation with the Class of 1944. Like the Class of 2023, their high

school experience was shaped in part by the suffering and strife in the world around them.

The Sisters pointed out how delightful it was to be able to watch the livestream of the Class of 2023’s commencement with all of their Sisters gathered at their new St. Joseph Center building. It had been many years since any of them had been able to see one of our commencement ceremonies. And the new livestreaming technology that had been installed at Our Lady of Angels to keep homebound parishioners connected to services during the pandemic, provided this new, added benefit for our community. Video screen participation, once a daily symbol of the disconnection of the pandemic, has now become a worthy tool for strengthening and renewing relationships.

Seasons change. Time passes. The mission of unifying love continues, renewed.

International Immersive Learning Experiences Return

After a three-year pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, students were able to travel outside the United States this spring. The destinations vary each school year and this year, it was Italy. The Academy’s international travel opportunities are designed to help students broaden their perspectives and gain a deeper understanding of being part of a global society.

Points of interest included Rome, Vatican City, Napoli and Sicily. Students explored the Vatican Museum, toured the Colosseum, walked the Spanish Steps and enjoyed views of Mount Etna and the Italian countryside. In addition to learning about Italian culture, students sampled the local cuisine.

Isabella Bellini ’23 shared this reflection on her experience: “I decided I wanted to attend the trip to Italy after four years as a Latin student. During my Latin classes, we learned about language and grammar but also spent an enjoyable amount of time discussing culture and architecture. I wanted the opportunity to apply the knowledge I learned from the course by seeing the structures such as Pompeii, the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, Roman temples and theater, and so much more. One of my favorite parts of this experience was connecting the stops in Italy back to the lessons my classmates and I spent studying. I was amazed to taste all of the different foods from various parts of the country. From Rome to Sicily, there was not one bad meal or a day without gelato. I am incredibly thankful that I was able to go on this once in a lifetime trip. In addition to gaining a new perspective about the world, I was able to either create new or strengthen relationships with my classmates, teachers, tour guide and even people from Italy.”

A Celebration of Sisterhood

While Paws for Pride has certainly evolved since its inception two decades ago, its meaning, spirit and unwavering Jaguar pride persist.

In April, the Academy Center came alive with the sound of laughter, cheers and excitement as the day began. The bonds between classmates showed in the spirited games, captivating skits and heartfelt songs. The Seniors won this year’s Paws for Pride trophy and the award for best hallway, themed “Soaring through Senior Year.”

Paws for Pride continues to be a tribute to what each class has learned from one another, and the joy and love for the Academy’s sisterhood can be seen through the many hugs, high fives and tears of happiness, joy and love for each other. As current students become alumnae, they look back on Paws for Pride, just as I do, as one of the most memorable traditions during their time at the Academy.

COMMENCEMENT

Congratulations, Class of 2023!

On May 30, the Class of 2023 graduated from Saint Joseph Academy.

The 169 graduates began the evening in their white gowns, carrying a bouquet of one dozen red roses processing down Rocky River Drive to Our Lady of Angels Church in the beloved tradition of the “Walk of the Roses.” The class was led by President Mrs. Kathryn Purcell and the Commencement speaker, Board of Directors member Ms. Margaret Sweeney ’03

During her Commencement speech, Ms. Sweeney shared, “You, as a class – the Class of 2023 – the resilient Class of 2023, have so much to be proud of after how far you’ve come. Your first year at Saint Joseph Academy was unlike any other – after only one full semester in the Academy Building, you were all sent home on what was supposed to be an extended Spring Break – only to finish your freshman year over a computer screen. But you hung in there – and you came back to a new school – a bigger school. By the grace of God and the charity of the Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph, you came back to Fitzmaurice Hall, which doubled what was already the most beautiful high school campus in all of Northeast Ohio. You endured a global pandemic – and you came out stronger, having had the collective experience of needing to adapt to a changing world. You came out as a class more unified, more connected, more reflective that even the little things like: walking into a classroom every day, getting to hug your best friend in the hall, being able to whisper a joke to someone in class, cannot be taken for granted. After those years, you know that in a moment those precious things can be taken away. Today’s ceremony and the diplomas you will receive are a reflection of the accomplishment that you got through that – together. You should always carry with you that pride, and know how resilient you really are.”

In her last piece of advice to the Class of 2023, Ms. Sweeney shared, “remember that life is a series of transitions, like today. Life will sometimes be difficult; it won’t always be white gowns and red roses. You will fail. You will lose people. Sometimes you will feel like you’ve lost yourself. But none of the feelings that you have at those times are permanent, because remember, you’re resilient, and life is a series of transitions from one thing to the next.”

The Class of 2023 have many legacy connections including:

• Sixteen have mothers who are alumnae

• Twenty-three have grandmothers who are alumnae

• Five have great-grandmothers who are alumnae

• Six have both mothers and grandmothers who are alumnae

• Four are related to Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph (CSJ)

• One has a mother and grandmother and is related to a CSJ who are also alumnae

Valedictorian Alicia Blouch (sister of Katelyn “Kate” Blouch ’21) will be attending Northeastern University in the fall. She was named a National Merit Finalist and a National Hispanic Recognition Scholar. At Saint Joseph Academy, Alicia was a member of many clubs including the Academic Jaguars, Asian Culture, GirlUp, Model United Nations, Shelter Helper and the Newspaper Club: Jaguar Beat. She was also on the Cross Country and the Indoor & Outdoor Track and Field teams.

Salutatorian Emma McConnell will be attending The Ohio State University in the fall. Emma was honored as a National Merit Finalist. At Saint Joseph Academy, Emma was a member of the Health Sciences Honors Program and Jazz Band. She was involved in many clubs such as Book, Latin, National Honors Society and Yearbook. Emma was also a Writing Center tutor.

Phi Beta Kappa award recipient Theresa “Tacy” Kratt (daughter of Catherine Waters Kratt ’87) will attend The Ohio State University in the fall. Tacy was named a National Merit Commended Scholar. At Saint Joseph Academy, she was a member of the Global Scholars Program and the Health Sciences Honors Program. She was also on the Cross Country and Indoor & Outdoor Track and Field teams, a member of the eNewspaper Club: Jaguar Beat, and Yearbook Club.

Congratulations, Class of 2023! We officially welcome you as members of the alumnae community and can’t wait to connect with you at your next return to campus.

Living the Mission

The Emerging Wisdom of Saint Joseph Academy Graduates

In this issue of UPDATE we share inspiring accomplishments of twenty-five young alumnae who are living out The Character of a Saint Joseph Academy Graduate as educators and lawyers, advocates, entrepreneurs, managers, caregivers and more.

Many of these women point to the same factors that Academy students regularly say are important to their development: supportive relationships with teachers and peers, service and other hands-on learning experiences and the many opportunities to explore new ideas and interests that are offered here. When I speak with Seniors about The Character of a Saint Joseph Academy Graduate, I frequently hear that they feel they have grown in their sense of the value of service to others–a quality which can be seen very clearly in this year’s “25 Under 35” honorees. Many Seniors also say they have become more open to new perspectives and people, while also growing more confident in their own abilities and values during their four years as high school students.

It is wonderful to hear from recent and soon-to-be graduates about how the Academy has shaped them. And yet, I often hear from older alumnae that their appreciation for their education has continued to develop long after graduation, through higher education and careers and raising families. It is only in these

changing life contexts that the meaning of this “Character” really becomes clear–which is actually an important part of the attribute of Emerging Wisdom (our school theme in 2023-2024).

In a way, The Character of a Saint Joseph Academy Graduate statement is an expression of Emerging Wisdom at an institutional level. Although it reflects the values that have guided the Academy throughout its history, the statement itself is a relatively recent development, which was adopted in 2016 to provide a shared vision and common language for the desired outcomes of a Saint Joseph Academy education. As such, this statement is not just an aspiration for students, but for our school as a whole, which allows us to identify how we may need to grow and change as well as where to build on our strengths and successes in the future.

Because the world around us and the needs of our students continue to evolve, our mission calls us to pay attention to the wisdom that emerges with time, humility, and openness to new perspectives. Even as we celebrate the accomplishments of Saint Joseph Academy graduates, we remember that none of us are ever finished learning and growing, either as individuals or as an institution, because the Spirit of God continues to call us to deeper, wiser, and more universal love.

Their dedication to others and their exceptional personal and professional accomplishments exemplify the values instilled within them during their time at the Academy. In their roles, they shape the lives of others and ignite a passion for learning, provide compassionate care and comfort to those in need, advocate for justice and equality, strive to affect positive change in their communities, and lend their voices to those in need while working to create a more compassionate world.

Nasja Aude ’08

Intervention Specialist, Horizon Science Academy of Lorain

Bachelor of Science in Education, Intervention Specialist (K-12), with a concentration in Mild/ Moderate Educational Needs, Kent State University

Nasja shows compassionate leadership daily as an educator. In addition to her caseload, she serves as Student Council Advisor and mentors students through the Concept Young Scholars Program to prepare them for college. She recently helped the senior class plan and fundraise for its first-ever out-of-state senior trip—to Chicago—and last year she planned the inaugural prom. She has orchestrated pep rallies, spirit weeks and Trunk or Treat events. It’s a priority for Nasja to give students a high school experience as memorable as her own. It was her close bonds with teachers at Saint Joseph Academy that make her value student/staff connections today. Many of Nasja’s students have shared with her that they attribute their success to the positive rapport she built with them and the safe space she provided. She emphasizes relationship building because she feels it’s one of the most important aspects of life in general and, more specifically, helps students academically, spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically. In fact, she is so proficient at it that the Senior Class President describes Nasja as the “surrogate mother/aunt of the school building.”

Brandilyn Cook ’09

Judicial Staff Attorney, Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court

Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, The Ohio State University

Juris Doctor, Cleveland State University College of Law

Sister of Natalie Litchney ’21

It was never lost on Brandilyn that her life could have turned out very differently. As a first generation American of Honduran descent, she studied criminal justice in college. When considering law school as a next step, she interned with a criminal defense and immigration attorney to get first-hand information about the field. Brandilyn ultimately became interested in “crimmigration”—the intersection of criminal law and immigration law—and enrolled at Cleveland State University College of Law, formerly Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. A summer internship at Harvard Law School’s Immigration and Refugee Clinic was significant in addition to other law clerk opportunities, continuing the hands-on experiences with clients and opening her eyes to the many inequities faced by people with our current justice system. With racial injustice and immigration dominating headlines in recent years, and due to Saint Joseph Academy’s emphasis on Empathetic Justice and Service to the Dear Neighbor, Brandilyn discovered that helping displaced people is her purpose. She finds it deeply rewarding when families can stay together or when there’s resolution for someone going through difficult times. Brandilyn also volunteers with nonprofit groups LegalWorks, The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland and the Telos Leadership Foundation.

Emily also demonstrates compassionate leadership through her involvement with Cleveland Family Meal, a coalition of local chefs whose mission is to feed out-of-work service industry professionals, musicians, artists and community members affected by financial hardship caused by the pandemic. Emily’s desire to become a leader in her career and community took root in high school, and the friendships she formed at the Academy continue to inspire her. She also credits her grandmother and other strong female role models for encouraging her to showcase the maledominated culinary field as a career for women too.

engagement while continuing to use the confidence, empathy and critical thinking skills learned at Saint Joseph Academy. She has authored numerous articles, taught at the undergraduate and graduate levels and serves as a featured conference presenter. Morgan’s interest in public service dates back to the Academy where she co-founded the Political Action Club and served on the Senior Class Leadership Team. Director of Operations, Diversified Health Partners, LLC

Associate Degree, Lorain County Community College

For nearly three years during the pandemic, Emily went above and beyond helping families find long-term care for their elderly loved ones. Emily took on additional roles as needed, such as Human Resource Director, Business Office Manager, Social Services and Recruitment/Scheduler. She hugged staff and encouraged them through difficult times. The values instilled in her by her alma mater remind her that women are capable of succeeding in whatever field they choose, including male-dominated ones. On September 13, 2023, Saint Joseph Academy will kick off its annual Jaguar Jackpot raffle to support tuition assistance for each and every student. Tickets will be purchased online from a specific student or in support of any student.

Visit www.sja1890.org/jaguarjackpot for more information and to purchase tickets online (Ohio residents only) through October 15, 2023 11:59 p.m. EST. You could be this year’s winner!

August is National Make-A-Will Month. This annual observance emphasizes the importance of creating a will to care for all you love.

Saint Joseph Academy partners with FreeWill to offer their secure online estate planning tool to all SJA alumnae and supporters at no cost. Since 2020, more than 40 members of the community have utilized FreeWill to create their will and get peace of mind.

Here are a few reasons why you might want to complete this essential task:

• Security: Creating your will and estate plan allows you to communicate important financial and healthcare decisions, so you’re prepared for whatever the future may hold.

• Peace of mind: A will allows you to provide for the people and pets you love, so you know that no matter what, they will be supported.

• Impact: By including a legacy gift to Saint Joseph Academy in your will, you can sustain our efforts to develop the next generation of young women’s talents so they can change the world as compassionate leaders of tomorrow!

Memoriam

Eternal rest grant unto them O, Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.

It is with deep sadness that we share news of the death of three Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph who made significant contributions to the Saint Joseph Academy community.

Sr. Agnes Schreiber, CSJ ’49 entered into eternal life on May 29, 2023. She volunteered as a library aide at Saint Joseph Academy from 2003-2010.

Sr. Patricia Finn, CSJ (Sr. Pat) passed away on May 24, 2023. She entered the Congregation of St. Joseph in 1949 and spent many of her 52 years as an educator at Saint Joseph Academy, where she served as Principal from 1973-1979. During her time at the Academy, Sr. Pat also taught business, theology and reading, as well as serving as Assistant Principal for several years.

Sr. Elizabeth Lavelle, CSJ ’59 (Sr. Liz) entered into eternal life on April 7, 2023. She served as a counselor and teacher at both Nazareth Academy and Saint Joseph Academy. Sr. Liz served the dear neighbor with the Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph for 58 years.

We offer condolences to all who have been touched by Sr. Agnes, Sr. Pat and Sr. Liz. May they rest in the peace and love of God and live on in our hearts and memory.

Scholarship Granting Organization

Allocate Your Tax Dollars to Help Those Most in Need

The Ohio General Assembly recently established a program whereby Ohioans can receive a 100% tax credit against Ohio income tax liability for cash contributions to certified Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs) who grant scholarships for tuition to students. By creating an SGO, organizations will receive their contributions directly versus receiving them through a third party.

Saint Joseph Academy has created its own SGO - the Saint Joseph Academy Scholarship Granting Organization (SJA SGO). The SJA SGO is designed to allow members of our community to make donations for Saint Joseph Academy students while also receiving eligibility for an Ohio tax credit - dollar for dollar. This credit is limited to the lesser of $750 for an individual (or $1,500 if married filing jointly) or the related state of Ohio tax liability.

By contributing to the SJA SGO, you:

• Have power to direct your tax dollars

• Directly impact our students

• Help us award scholarships to students with the highest financial need
