Senior Excels in National Art Competition A Saint Joseph Academy senior has received national recognition for her artistic talent ... and will be making a special trip to New York City on May 31st to accept her award. Kelsey Kish ‘11 was given a “Gold Key” award for outstanding artwork from the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers’ 2011 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. The 88-year-old program recognizes outstanding and creative teenagers and offers scholarship opportunities for graduating seniors. This year, there were more than 185,000 submissions to the competition. Kelsey, daughter of Susan and Kenneth Kish, won both a regional and national “Gold Key” award. In addition to traveling to New York City to receive recognition, her artwork will be exhibited in the World Financial Center Courtyard Gallery in Lower Manhattan, New York City. Kelsey and other honorees will have a more visual representation of their accomplishments: New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has declared May 31st the official “Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Day” and decreed that the top of the Empire State Building be lit in gold in honor of the students’ accomplishments. “Kelsey is a gifted art student,” said Ms. Shelly DiCello, SJA Visual and Performing Arts Chair. “She has an intuitive and keen sensibility with drawing, painting and printmaking. When she creates, she pulls her ideas from a preliminary vision and runs with it. I love to see that kind of confidence within my students!”

CSU’s Head of Chemical Engineering Visits Math Club

L to R: Thalia Cabrera ‘14, Megan Shrock ‘12, Wedad Shafi ’12 , Dr. Dhananjai Shah, and Julie Simmons ‘13.

Dr. Dhananjai Shah, head of the Cleveland State University Chemical Engineering Department, came to talk to the SJA Math Club on March 4th about pi, i and e, the three most important transcendental numbers in mathematics. The students found it amazing that Archimedes first calculated pi in 250 BC without knowledge of any trigonometry or decimal notation. Some mathematicians spent their whole lives calculating pi to further decimal places, and had the digits of pi that they discovered engraved on their tombstones. Dr. Shah showed humorous cartoons dealing with pi that the students enjoyed, as well as talking about chemical engineering at the end of his presentation. This event was sponsored by the SJA Math Club, whose current officers are Mel Mironovich ’11 (president), Lydia Apostoluk ’11 (vice president), Katie Haller ’11 (secretary), and Wedad Shafi ’12 (treasurer). Moderator is Mathematics teacher Mrs. Paula Schuetz.

Father/Daughter Dance Created Long-lasting Memories It was a “Red Carpet” evening on a blustery March evening as 236 students and dads enjoyed the annual Father/ Daughter Dance. Girls took to the stage throughout the night to lead participants in songs and dances. With few (if any!) pauses in the action, the dance floor was packed as both generations enjoyed music. In a particularly moving moment, each of the 40 seniors at the dance was presented

with a single pink rose by their dads. Jessica Olle ’12 posted on her Facebook page, “Spending the night dancing with my dad and friends, having a fun time.” Devan Conway ’12 and her father James.
