Building Leadership Through Service

Building Leadership Through Service

Servant Leader (n)

A leader who focuses primarily on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong.

There is a powerful force that occurs the moment someone discovers the connection between leadership and service. Effective leaders live to serve others, creating an atmosphere of trust and respect that fosters the mind to grow.

Saint Joe’s strives each day to emphasize to its students the importance of leading by example and prioritizing the needs of their peers, school, and community before their own.

Through acclaimed athletic programs, award-winning extracurricular activities and robust formation programs, Saint Joe’s is the cornerstone of building leadership through service.

Letter from John Nolan

Dear Saint Joseph Community,

There has never been a better time to be a Falcon. As I walk our school’s halls, attend our athletic events and visit with alumni, I have never been more excited about the future of our current students and the prospects for Saint Joseph High School’s future.

Saint Joe’s has a foundation of building leadership through service. Through the thousands of hours our students contributed to their community or the countless fundraisers organized by our athletic programs and clubs/extracurricular activities, Saint Joseph High School is rooted in shaping tomorrow’s servant leaders.

Today, I am excited to announce another record breaking fundraising year. The Saint Joseph community contributed over $1.5 million to the Saint Joseph Annual Fund. We owe a debt of gratitude to John Shibles ‘65 for making the largest individual gift of the year in July 2023. John passed away shortly after he made this gift. While we miss his guidance and friendship, the impact he made on the lives of our students will be felt for years to come.

Support from our community, including the over 1,000 alumni who donated in FY23/24, is critical to sustaining our 63 year history of excellence. As our student body continues to grow, so will the need for more support. Every dollar that is raised goes directly to the Saint Joe’s experience and your generosity is vital in keeping the journey to excellence alive.

As we celebrate all of our successes, I would be remiss if I didn’t congratulate Brother Richard Leven, S.C., for his 65 years of service to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Br. Rich is the definition of a Saint Joe’s man and we are lucky to have someone as dedicated as he is in our school community.

One of my favorite opportunities as President of Saint Joseph High School is the ability to connect with our over 10,000 alumni. Whether it is at a milestone reunion, our annual Thanksgiving Alumni Social, or even the Sistine Chapel in Rome (yes, I ran into Tom O’Brien ‘69 inside Michelangelo’s masterpiece this summer), I love seeing the lasting friendships that were created on our campus and look forward to meeting more of you in the near future.

Thank you so much for all you do on behalf of Saint Joseph High School and our students.

SCHOLARSHIPS

When Fr. André Coindre founded the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in 1821, he did so under the premise of supporting young orphaned or homeless children. He wanted to give these young people hope for safety and opportunity, but his ultimate goal was to lead them to faith.

Saint Joseph High School believes that it is a fundamental right for every young man to have access to a faith-centric education. Through our need-based financial assistance and scholarship programs, our alumni and friends are providing educational opportunities to those who are most deserving.

During the 2023-2024 school year, 60 percent of the student body was awarded need-based financial assistance or scholarships, further showcasing the ongoing need for support.

students Percentages (2023-24)

Another avenue to support student achievement is through our legacy scholarship program. To date, there are 36 active scholarships that were launched to continue the tradition of excellence left behind by our alumni, Partner in Mission or friend of Saint Joseph High School.

Last year, over $225,000 was raised in support of scholarships and three new awards were launched. Here are some highlights of the Saint Joseph scholarship program:

Br. Ronald Cairns S.C. Memorial Scholarship

The Brother Ronald Cairns, S.C. Memorial Scholarship was established by the Saint Joseph High School Fathers Club in memory of their longtime moderator, Brother Ronald Cairns, S.C. Brother Ronald served the Brothers of the Sacred Heart as a Partner in Mission for over 60 years. The scholarship fund grants an award of $7,500 to a Saint Joseph High School junior, to be applied to his senior year tuition.

Class of 1971 Scholarship

The Class of 1971 – 50th Reunion Scholarship was established by members of the Saint Joseph High School Class of 1971 in honor of their 50th reunion. The scholarship provides one $5,500 award annually to an incoming freshman who has demonstrated involvement in extracurricular activities, service to others and his community, and leadership through good character and example. The Class of 1971 seeks to support deserving students at Saint Joe’s who embody the values and spirit of the class.

Walter C. Callari “Lead by Example” Award

The Walter C. Callari “Lead by Example” Award was established by the Callari/Granito Family in memory of Walter C. Callari, the grandfather of Ryan Granito, Class of 2019. Throughout his life, Walter Callari was dedicated to Catholic education, love for his country, and service to others. The fund provides an award of $2,000 to a graduating senior who demonstrated service to others, leadership through good character and example, and is planning to serve their country by attending a United States service academy or ROTC program.

The opportunities to memorialize a loved one or a lifelong mentor while supporting a current or future Saint Joseph Falcon are vast. For more information about our Scholarship program, visit www.StJoes.org/scholarships or scan the QR code.

SIGNATURE EVENTS

Saint Joseph High School builds community spirit and philanthropy through a series of signature events. From the Falcon Golf Classic to the Green Tie Gala, our Signature Event series fosters camaraderie and reignites the heartfelt pride of our alumni and extended Falcon Family. These events are the cornerstone of Saint Joseph’s inperson fundraising efforts, creating unique experiences for the entire community to drive our school forward.

The Falcon Golf Classic brings the brotherhood together for a day of fun and friendly competition. Through an array of oncourse games and activities, including “Beat the Pro” where attendees go one-on-one with a member of the Saint Joe’s golf team, the Falcon Golf Classic contributed $45,000 net to the Saint Joseph Annual Fund.

The Mothers Club hosts two events each year that draw hundreds of people from the immediate and greater community. Pocketbook BINGO, held in the Fall, and Basket Raffle, held in the Spring boast an array of top brands and unique prizes, typically resulting in two sold out events. All proceeds from these events are dedicated toward need-based financial assistance for future Falcons. Last year, the Mothers Club was thrilled to have exceeded their goals, raising over $150,000, and would like to thank all those who helped them get there! The Fathers Club supports the school through fundraisers like the Annual Christmas Tree Sale and managing concessions for athletic events.

Every November brings the annual Green Tie Gala celebration. This event continues to grow each year as we celebrate Saint Joe’s tradition of excellence and the collective generosity of the extended Falcon Family community. A guest list of alumni, parents and friends come together to enjoy fellowship, food, music and dancing for our largest in-person fundraising event. In FY23/24, over $135,000 net was donated to the Saint Joseph Annual Fund.

Our record-breaking year was capped by a momentous Saint Joseph Giving Day. The school’s largest fundraiser of the year raised $272,315.75 from 826 donors, a 19 percent increase in donations from the previous year. Our annual Giving Tuesday campaign generated $58,096 for The Barn, a new weight room coming to campus soon.

Student Activities and Achievements

World Language Students Succeed on Worldwide Biliteracy Exam

The Seal of Biliteracy Program was instituted by the World Languages Department to formally credential students who excel in their language courses. The program has produced 17 award winners in the two years since its launch. Students are required to pass a language assessment to demonstrate their fluency and proficiency in their chosen language. With awards distributed in Functional Fluency, Working Fluency and Professional Fluency.

During the 2023-2024 school year, 14 students received the Global Seal, including five German language students, seven Spanish language students, one Japanese self-

study language student and one Chinese self-study language student. Owen Smythe ‘24 and Thomas Ogrodnik ‘24 earned both Functional Fluency and Working Fluency in reading, writing, listening and speaking German.

Saint Joe’s Broadcasting and Media Students Provide Critical Updates to School Community

Since its inception over 15 years ago, the Saint Joseph Broadcasting Club and Saint Joe’s Media team have become one of the public faces of the school. What started as an avenue for students to learn the intricacies of sports broadcasting has evolved into a 360 degree

view of the media industry. Saint Joe’s media-focused students are not just broadcasting our championship athletic programs, they also provide in-depth coverage of the school on social media, produce a monthly video newsletter called News from the Nest, and write content for TODAY Magazine. This unique learning experience has propelled recent graduates to success in the collegiate and professional ranks.

The Saint Joe’s Broadcasting and Media students produce a monthly video newsletter to update the community.

Throughout the year, Saint Joe’s athletic programs supported the community, with football and bowling raising funds for the Marisa Tufaro Foundation, and hockey supporting the Falcons & Friends Prom.

Athletic Programs Excel On and Off the Field

The tradition of excellence within the Saint Joseph Athletic program reigns true to this day. 65 percent of the student body participates in one of the 16 varsity-sanctioned sports.

The bowling team is the most dominant program in the state. After successfully defending both the team and individual state championships last winter, the team placed No. 9 at the National High School Bowling Championship, with Kai Strothers ‘26 taking home the individual national title.

On the mats, the wrestling program has become a powerhouse in Central New Jersey.

Brian Christie ‘24 is one of the only wrestlers in state history to record 100 career pins, while the program as a whole sent five grapplers to the state tournament.

In the spring, the volleyball team won their second consecutive state title and the lacrosse program won their first county championship in nine years.

Twelve student-athletes from the Class of 2024 continued the Saint Joseph pipeline to collegiate sports, including four NCAA Division I signees.

Faith & Formation

A cornerstone of the Saint Joseph High School experience, the Faith & Formation Program reflects our commitment to educating the whole person—mind, heart, and soul. Rooted in the charism of Fr. André Coindre and the mission of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, the program is designed to inspire students to live out their faith actively and compassionately.

Central to Faith & Formation is a hands-on approach that immerses students in meaningful experiences.

Through Theology classes, students engage deeply with the Catholic faith, exploring its teachings and their relevance to daily life. Students grow in their faith by regularly attending Mass, praying the Rosary and participating in adoration.

One of the most popular clubs on campus, Campus Ministry, provides students with real-life experiences in faith. Through community service hours, annual service trips and handson learning opportunities, Campus Ministry offers students transformative spiritual experiences that they will remember for the rest of their lives.

Our service trip program, SJ Outreach, provides students with opportunities to travel outside of Central New Jersey to help those in need. These initiatives connect students to those who are materially poor, following directly in the footsteps of Fr. Coindre and the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.

Events like Tent City challenge students to confront the realities of homelessness, while student-led fundraising efforts empower them to make a tangible impact on their local and global communities.

Together, these components guide students in developing a strong moral compass and a deep commitment to living out their faith in meaningful ways. The Faith & Formation Program at Saint Joseph High School inspires students to grow as servant leaders who embody the Catholic values in all aspects of their lives.

The Falcons & Friends program joins together Saint Joseph students and people with special needs and disabilities. Throughout the year, Saint Joe’s hosts holiday parties, an outdoor barbeque and a prom.

Central to Faith & Formation is a handson approach that immerses students in meaningful experiences.

Students garnered $34,696 for Covenant House New Jersey during the annual Tent City event.

Dear Saint Joseph Community,

Letter from John Langdon

On behalf of your Saint Joseph High School Board of Directors I am happy to report that this past year was one of significant growth and success for our school. We continued to build on the positive trajectory we have enjoyed over the past several years. The best evidence of this success is the growth in enrollment we have seen in the past two Freshman classes. We are currently close to 600 young men on campus and we haven’t been near this student population in many years!

This past year we welcomed two new members to our Board. We are extremely happy to welcome Ernest Feist ‘76 and Eric Plummer ‘06 to our Board of Directors. Both men are great additions and have contributed greatly in a short period of time. We also welcomed Ken Mayer ‘74 back to the Board. On a sad note, the Saint Joseph community lost a valued board member and great friend when Kevin Johnson ‘69 unexpectedly passed away on February 14, 2024. Kevin is greatly missed.

Thanks to your continued support, FY23/24 was an amazing year for our school. Some of the key highlights include:

y Fundraising revenue exceeded $1.5 million, a 212 percent growth over the past five years, through your generous philanthropy

y 2,321 individual gifts were received in FY23/24, with 1,000 alumni contributing to the Saint Joseph Annual Fund

y The graduating classes of 1965, 1973 and 1983 had over 25 percent participation, while two classes, 1965 and 1976, contributed more than $50,000 each

y Our signature events, including the Falcon Golf Classic, Green Tie Gala, Mothers Club Pocketbook Bingo and Basket Raffle generated over $300,000 in revenue for the Annual Fund

I speak for our entire board when I say thank you for your continued support to all facets of Saint Joseph High School. There is no better way to honor all of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, past and present, than to give back to the school they poured their hearts into for over 64 years. They made Saint Joseph Men out of so many of us and I am proud to help lead the charge forward in their name.
