DOUBLING DOWN ON COMMUNITY HEALTH

Growing Impact Through Partnerships

Building on our legacy as one of San Francisco’s most respected independent charitable foundations, the Saint Francis Foundation is steadfast in its mission to advance local healthcare access, quality and equity.

In 2025, we were proud to help fill the federal funding gap that devastated essential medical services for San Francisco’s most vulnerable residents by increasing aid to our community partners. In today’s political and philanthropic climate, our partnerships have never been stronger or made a bigger impact in helping to improve people’s lives.

2024-25 HOSPITAL

GRANT HIGHLIGHTS

Saint Francis Foundation is proud to have been the primary philanthropic partner to San Francisco’s longest-serving downtown hospital since 1979 - Saint Francis Hospital (now owned by UCSF Health). The Foundation continues to support the hospital’s vital community-based programs and staff- and physician-led priorities while maintaining our independence as a grant-making charitable foundation with a mission to advance community-wide healthcare.

Advancing Treatment and Recovery at The Bothin Burn Center

As the only dedicated burn center in Northern California, the Bothin Burn Center provides treatment for more than 500 seriously burned children and adults each year. Last year, the Foundation continued its long history of funding new technologies and training for the Center’s surgeons, nurses, therapists, pain control specialists, and home care providers, along with new grants for advanced treatment and rehabilitation equipment.

Extending Compassion at Life’s End

Through a partnership with the Stupski Foundation, Saint Francis Foundation funded a new palliative care initiative under the leadership of Nurse Manager Donnie Nelson, providing patients and their loved ones with culturally relevant support to help Chinesespeaking families navigate difficult end-of-life decisions.

Expanding Access to Gender-Affirming Care

As the Gender Institute’s lead funder since its establishment in 2016, Foundation support enables life-changing outcomes for more than 500 transgender and gender-diverse patients every year. The Foundation is funding the Institute's expansion to meet increasing need and demand, with a new state-of-the-art facility opening in 2026.

Creating Safe Spaces for Families to Stay Connected During Crisis

Each year, Rally Family Visitation Services provides thousands of hours of visitation services to hundreds of children and families in the Bay Area, nearly threequarters of whom are low-income and non-Englishspeaking families who would otherwise go unserved if not for the ongoing support of the Foundation.

Responding to Growing Mental Health Needs

The Gwendolyn Walsh Emergency Department is the second busiest ED in San Francisco, serving more than 40,000 patients annually. In 2024, in partnership with Delta Dental, Saint Francis Foundation funded the hiring of behavioral healthcare social workers at the hospital to support the increasing number of ED patients suffering from mental trauma and addiction.
