OUR LEGACY AS HEALTHCARE LEADERS In 1952 Saint Anselm College responded to a compelling need: hospitals in the surrounding communities were desperate for well-educated, qualified nurses. This led the College to expand its liberal arts curriculum and establish the first bachelor of science in nursing program for high school graduates in New Hampshire.

Since then, more than 4,000 Saint Anselm graduates have gone on to extraordinary nursing and healthcare careers as practitioners and leaders. Our nursing program stands out for its academic rigor—each year, nearly every graduate passes the NCLEX-RN board exam on the first try. However, Anselmian nurses and

healthcare professionals are known for much more than their excellent academic preparation and technical proficiency. NEW HEALTH SCIENCES PROGRAM

COMMUNITY AND PUBLIC HEALTH MAJOR Our world needs more public health professionals who can understand how the environment and medical systems interact in everyday life, how communities are impacted by health disasters, and how to make ethical decisions for a community.

The Community and Public Health major critically examines disease prevention and systemic health challenges through the lens of civic responsibility and service.

The interdisciplinary program pulls from the expertise of multiple departments including our nationally-ranked nursing program, biology, psychology, and sociology, to provide an experience rich in science, public policy, civics,

and ethics. Local community engagement opportunities give students time in-the-field to explore their options and gain valuable experience. Students graduate prepared for a career that through education, policy-making, or research, promotes health and improves the lives of individuals and communities on a local, state, and global level.

AN EASY DECISION For Isabella Stuzynski ’24, one of only ten students accepted into the 2024 graduate residency program in the Cardiac ICU at Boston Children’s Hospital, choosing Saint Anselm was an easy decision. In addition to being recruited to play lacrosse, “Both of my parents graduated from Saint Anselm,” she says, “and my mom’s the best nurse I’ve ever met.”

Isabella has learned about the rapidly changing field of healthcare from her mother, Suzanne (Aronis) Stuzynski ’90, who has worked at Boston Children’s Hospital since 1996. “The biggest changes have been in technology,” Isabella says. “Those advancements allow patients on life support who might not have made it 20 years ago to survive.”

Although she’s deeply grateful for the nursing education and skills she’s earned at the College, Isabella strongly believes that her liberal arts courses—especially in theology and philosophy— have been equally important. “Healthcare is not only physical, but spiritual as well. My education has given me the experience and perspective to treat every patient with respect and dignity. If I could go back, I would choose this program a hundred times over.

THE TIME IS NOW: OUR VISION FOR TRANSFORMING THE FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE The field of healthcare is undergoing exciting seismic shifts. Thanks to new transformative technologies and a focus on preventive healthcare and population health, patients who might have died 20 years ago can now survive.

Rapidly increasing healthcare costs, higher patient acuity, and workforce shortages have increased demands on healthcare organizations.

This means healthcare providers must be adept, ethical problem solvers as they navigate complex situations and communicate effectively with interdisciplinary teams to provide seamless, top-quality care at every level.

In addition, the U.S. is becoming increasingly diverse. It is critical that today’s healthcare providers understand social drivers of health 6

and health equity along with contemporary social challenges, and promote open and inclusive environments.

While Saint Anselm’s nursing program has long been recognized among New England schools for its academic excellence and Benedictine values, many of our competitors have recently added nursing schools, constructed new facilities, and diversified their health services education portfolios. A NATURAL CHOICE The son of Saint Anselm graduates, Samuel Luther ’25 chose the nursing major “because I wanted something that wouldn’t lock me into one career. With nursing, you can do many things.”

He has embraced opportunities to work in different clinical settings, including a psychiatric hospital, a stint leading a “Bodies in Motion Class” for nuns at St. Joseph Residence. and a Costa Rican clinic providing care to a community with limited resources. Luther also earned a 2024 summer Flynn Fellowship at Yale Smilow Cancer Hospital, where he added hands-on experiences in oncology nursing, cancer research, and more.

“Oncology is an exciting field because it’s truly cutting-edge,” he says.

THE ART AND SCIENCE OF NURSING She never planned to earn a nursing degree and a certification in fine arts, but now Erin (Prior) Collins ’98 says it made perfect sense. “Nursing is a science and an art,” she says. “Nurses must be knowledgeable in the science of clinical interventions and skilled in the art of making human connections to support holistic healing.”

Growing up in a family devoted to Catholic traditions, Collins found that Saint Anselm’s Benedictine community helped to support and further define her beliefs. She honed her leadership skills and honored her commitment to service through campus ministry and as a Resident Assistant and Director. “I was not only a role model for other students, but benefited from the leadership of the monks and professors on campus,” she says.

These early experiences supported her advancement from being a new nurse in med/surg nursing to becoming the VP of Nursing Professional Practice and Development at Concord Hospital Health System, where she started the first nursing informatics program in 2006 and worked with Saint Anselm to help students learn new technologies.

“The importance of nursing on the impact of quality in healthcare drives my leadership,” she says, adding that she’s delighted by Saint Anselm’s vision in creating the Jean School of Nursing and Health Sciences. “With this step, the College is making a profound statement about the importance of healthcare professionals and developing the workforce of the future.”

Saint Anselm College has launched the Jean School of Nursing and Health Sciences to ensure that we elevate the excellence of our programs and transform care around the region and nationwide.

On October 13, 2023, Saint Anselm’s community members gathered to celebrate breaking ground on Grappone Hall, a state-of-the-art healthcare learning facility that will allow Saint Anselm to fill critical shortages in the healthcare professions and transform the future of care.

Housed within 45,000 square feet, Grappone Hall will offer a 150-seat auditorium; a public health community space; a state-of-the-art patient simulation center; collaborative learning spaces for kinesiology, anatomy, and physiology; and community spaces for students to meet, mingle, and study.

OPENING DOORS Samuel Assantha ’26 was nine years old when his family immigrated to the U.S. from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Soccer offered a way to make friends and experience American culture. “Soccer was everything to me and opened up a lot of doors,” he says.

One of those doors led him to play soccer for Saint Anselm College. Athletics was also partly responsible for Assantha’s decision to pursue a nursing career.

“As an athlete, I’m very interested in anatomy and physiology and how the body repairs itself from injuries,” he says, adding that one of his uncles, who earned a doctorate in nursing, also influenced him.

“Whenever we had family functions, he’d talk to me about how important it is to care for people in your community, especially those who have little access to healthcare.”

In addition to playing soccer, Assantha is a member of Men of Color, a club that is part of the College’s Network for Racial Justice and works as a Licensed Nursing Assistant at Elliot Hospital. He hopes to earn additional clinical experience this year at Concord Hospital.

“I used to think nursing was all about taking care of people and giving medication, but it’s a lot harder and more complicated than that,” he says. “Nursing is about making connections with patients, advocating for them and yourself, and having a broad perspective so you can work successfully with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.”

WHEN WE ARRIVED AT SAINT ANSELM, THE SUN CAME OUT On the day Michelle Canalichio ’05, RN, MSN, first toured Saint Anselm College, “it was literally raining at every other college we saw, but when we arrived at Saint Anselm, the sun came out. Alumni Hall was glistening, everyone we met smiled at us, and I knew the College had everything I wanted.”

Her instincts didn’t let her down. “The best thing about Saint Anselm is that I experienced so many different kinds of nursing,” she says. “For instance, traveling to work in a clinic and an orphanage in Honduras opened my eyes to different nursing opportunities and cultures.”

Canalichio has met and trained many other nurses in her 20-year career, and she continues to be impressed by graduates from Saint Anselm.

“Our graduates are ready to come in, hit the ground running, and be successful.”

She’s not the only one in her family to think so: Canalachio’s sister and sister-in-law are both graduates of Saint Anselm College’s nursing program.

Canalichio is excited about the new School of Nursing and Health Sciences, and sees this as the College’s bid to continue setting the highest standards for training tomorrow’s healthcare providers, saying, “Our program has always had a great core, but the new facility will provide better opportunities for learning, with the space and technology we need to continue offering the most innovative education possible.”
