It is a process of changing the shape of the metal into a more grained structure. This is done by imposing compressive forces on it either by hammering or by using a specialized tool called die.

There are two types of forging based upon the temperature at which it is performed => Hot Forging => Cold Forging

=> In the former metal is heated to a temperature where it reaches above  recrystallization. Extreme heat is required to change the shape of the metal, but sometimes this also leads to oxidation. This can be avoided by using a special type of forging (isothermal) where the metal is deformed in a suitable environment such as in a vacuum. => As the name suggests the latter is done in a cool temperature where the metal reaches below recrystallization.

It is mostly performed in soft metals such as aluminum, finishing is not required after it, but sometimes metal is heated for a proper finish.

Both of these processes have their own merits and demerits, but it ultimately depends on the manufacturer preferences, requirements and his budget to choose.

Difference between forging and casting => There is a broad difference between these processes, but they are eventually used to change the shape of the metal. In casting the metal is heated, poured into the mould of the desired shape.
