BIG GOLD BRICK

Release Date: February 25, 2022

Emma (Slate) and Peter (Day) thought they were on the precipice of life’s biggest moments – marriage, kids, and houses in the suburbs – until their respective partners dumped them. In their thirties and terrified that they have missed their shot at happily ever after, Emma and Peter are horrified to learn that their partners have already moved on. With no prospects on the horizon and the threat of dying alone hanging over their heads, they hatch a desperate plan to put an end to their exes’ new relationships and win them back.

Big Gold Brick recounts the story of fledgling writer Samuel Liston and his experiences with Floyd Deveraux, the enigmatic middle-aged father of two who enlists Samuel to write his biography. But the circumstances that lead up to this arrangement in the first place are quite astonishing—and efforts to write the biography are quickly stymied by ensuing chaos in this darkly comedic, genre-bending film.

Should Inflation Affect Your Investment Moves?

As you know, inflation heated up in 2021, following years of pretty stable – and low – numbers. And now, early in 2022, we’re still seeing elevated prices. As a consumer, you may need to adjust your activities somewhat, but as an investor, how should you respond to inflation?

First, it helps to know the causes of this recent inflationary spike. Essentially, it’s a case of basic economics – strong demand for goods meeting inadequate supply, caused by material and labor shortages, along with shipping and delivery logjams. In other words, too many dollars chasing too few goods. Once the supply chain issues begin to ease and consumer spending moves from goods to services as the COVID-19 pandemic wanes, it’s likely that inflation will moderate, but it may still stay above pre-pandemic levels throughout 2022.

Given this outlook, you may want to review your investment portfolio. First, consider stocks. Generally speaking, stocks can do well in inflationary periods because companies’ revenues and earnings may increase along with inflation. But some sectors of the stock market typically do better than others during inflationary times. Companies that can pass along higher costs to consumers due to strong demand for their goods – such as firms that produce building materials or supply steel or other commodities to other businesses –can do well. Conversely, companies that sell nonessential goods and services, such as appliances, athletic apparel and entertainment, may struggle more when prices are rising.

Of course, it’s still a good idea to own a variety of stocks from various industries because it can help reduce the impact of market volatility on any one sector. And to help counteract the effects of rising prices, you might also consider investing in companies that have a long track record of paying and raising stock dividends. (Keep in mind, though, that these companies are not obligated to pay dividends and can reduce or discontinue them at any time.)

Apart from stocks, how can inflation affect other types of investments? Think about bonds. When you invest in a bond, you receive regular interest payments until the bond matures. But these payments stay the same, so, over time, rising inflation can eat into your bond’s future income, which may also cause the price of your bond to drop – a concern if you decide to sell the bond before it matures. The impact of inflation is especially sharp on the price of longer-term bonds because of the cumulative loss of purchasing power.

However, Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) can provide some protection against inflation. The face value, or principal amount, of each TIPS is $1,000, but this principal is adjusted based on changes in the U.S. Consumer Price Index. So, during periods of inflation, your principal will increase, also increasing your interest payments. When inflation

drops, though, your principal and interest payments will decrease, but you’ll never receive less than the original principal value when the TIPS mature. Talk to your financial advisor to determine if TIPS may be appropriate for you.

Ultimately, inflation may indeed be something to consider when managing your investments. But other factors – especially your risk tolerance, time horizon and longterm goals – should still be the driving force behind your investment decisions. A solid investment strategy can serve you well, regardless of whether prices move up or down.

Sahuarita Food Bank: Six Years Later - The Big Move

After six years, the Sahuarita Food Bank & Community Resource Center (SFB-CRC) has moved its operations to their new building. The project, which comes after years of preparation, fundraising, and community support, will allow them to serve even more families in need.

The Community Resource Center’s mission is to provide support to strengthen families, health/nutrition programs, and many workshops and training programs to help people learn new job skills and get employment; with the ultimate goal being economic and family wellbeing.

The team is due to receive the final Certificate of Occupancy for the new building on February 18th— exactly one year and a week after breaking ground. But even prior to this however, operations were already up and running with volunteers providing food outside. For example, 300 households were served the first week in January; 450 backpacks were distributed, pantries stocked, food collected from 6 grocery stores Monday – Saturday. Assistance was also able to be provided for utilities, SNAP sign-ups, and assistance in avoiding eviction.

In 2015, planning began for a new food bank building and a multi-agency service center—a one- stop hub for food and services. Food bank clients continued to grow 20-30% a year, and the food bank was already running out of space. In 2018, fundraising began with Sahuarita’s La Posada Foundation, as the initial large donor. Then in 2019, the team engaged Poster Mirto McDonald as architect and MW Morrissey and AIS as contractors. Through that process, it was decided to expand

the building footprint from 8,000 to 14,300 square feet, based on the continued growth they were experiencing. COVID dramatically increased the number of hungry families even more, and the need for food and services to recover from COVID will continue.

Over the last year thanks to the support of the community, the Sahuarita Food Bank was also able to work with the team at Rancho Sahuarita on Neighbor-to-Neighbor Sahuarita. As part of the program, each participating household collects one or two non-perishable food items as part of their weekly shopping trip and saves them for regular collection events. The food bank then picks up the food for distribution to their visitors. Volunteer Lora Nastase and Kelly Kyper and Sigourney Torres of Rancho Sahuarita are enthusiastically organizing these events, as they believe in the power of neighbors supporting neighbors! Other Sahuarita volunteers and donors have been extremely generous with their time, their contributions, and as continuing sources of food donations.

According to Board President, Penny Pestle, SFB-CRC will start its first Community Resource Center programs in February, with free tax preparation, line and prep cooking classes, and a retailing class available online. She also shared that all food bank volunteers are immunized and boosted, wear masks, and maintain safe social distancing. “We are an essential service, so we must stay open and also protect the health of our team.”

Conversation Hearts

As a kid Valentine’s Day was so exciting, especially at school. The days of making large special valentine pockets to hang from your desk so your classmates can drop their valentines cards at your desk. The enjoyment of opening each card and seeing if one included those fun candy hearts that had funny or cute words on them.

The story of conversation hearts began in 1847, when a Boston pharmacist named Oliver Chase longed for a way to get in on the apothecary lozenge craze. Lozenges were quickly gaining steam as the medicine conveyance of choice, and were also popular remedies for sore throats and bad breath. But making lozenges was complicated and time-consuming—the process involved a mortar and pestle, kneading dough, rolling it out, and cutting it into discs that would eventually become lozenges.

There had to be a better way, and Oliver came up with it. Inspired by the new wave of gadgets and tools that hit America as it industrialized, he invented a machine that rolled lozenge dough and pressed wafers into perfect discs. Oliver had inadvertently created America’s first

candy-making machine, and before long, he had abandoned his pharmacy business to crank out miles of what would become New England Confectionery Company (NECCO) wafers.

Legend has it that Oliver’s NECCO wafers were carried by Civil War soldiers, and some speculate that the tradition of sending loving greetings to the troops morphed into the conversation heart, but those claims are hard to verify. What is clear is that as Oliver built his candy empire, his brother Daniel decided he wanted a piece of the action.

Inspired by the growing market for Valentine’s cards (which were popularized in the United States by Esther Howland, also a resident of Boston at the time), Daniel wondered if it would be possible to print sentimental messages on candy. In 1866, he figured out a way to print words on candy with vegetable dye during the cutting process.

People loved conversation candies (they weren’t available in heart shapes until 1902) and their witty messages, which could stoke the flames of love or warn off flaky suitors. Daniel’s candies

By the turn of the century, the conversation heart was a Valentine’s cliché. Here’s how they were used at a Boston party in 1911:

Partners for the evening were found by means of candy “motto” hearts. These were broken in two, and each young lady was given a piece, but the men were obliged to hunt for theirs. As they were carefully hidden, this took some length of time and proved an excellent ‘ice breaker.’ The silly mottos were read with laughter as the couples chose their tables.

Over the years, conversation hearts lost size, but gained many more phrases. NECCO estimates that it makes nearly 100,000 pounds of hearts each day throughout the year in preparation for Valentine’s Day. The most popular sayings are, “BE MINE”, “HUG ME” and “CUTIE PIE”.

ERNIE’S FALLS

Type: Out and Back • Distance: 6.6 miles • Elevation: 1,213ft • Difficulty: Moderate • NO DOGS

Ernie's Falls Trail travels north to the signage at the boundary line. It is level at first and then descends into a wash. The waterfall is located off to the right at a rock outcropping as you descend. Look for saguaros close to the spot. You can go beyond the falls area to the wash, there is the National Park boundary line and a gate.

Feel free to pass through the gate, as it denotes the National Park/National Forest boundary, just make sure to close the gate behind you. Another .1 m down into the wash (seasonal water but can be flowing and full at times), there are slick rock boulders to sit on that make a great place to rest and eat a snack before returning back to the trailhead. The rest area described is actually in the National Forest, but journeying out to this point is pleasant and well worthwhile.

Pack a lunch and spend some time enjoying the beautiful desert and views our beautiful state has to offer! This would also be a great hike when the desert is in full bloom.

Night Sky FEBRUARY

FEBRUARY 1 - NEW MOON. The Moon will be located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 05:48 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere.

FEBRUARY 16 - FULL MOON. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 16:59 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Snow Moon because the heaviest snows usually fell during this time of the year. Since hunting is difficult, this moon has also been known by some tribes as the Hunger Moon, since the harsh weather made hunting difficult.

FEBRUARY 16 - MERCURY AT GREATEST WESTERN ELONGATION. The planet Mercury reaches greatest western elongation of 26.3 degrees from the Sun. This is the best time to view Mercury since it will be at its highest point above the horizon in the morning sky. Look for the planet low in the eastern sky just before sunrise.

OCEARCH SHARK TRAKER

Tracking sharks as they swim around the ocean may not be the most conventional way to waste time on the internet ... but it might be the coolest.

The Track Sharker tool by Marine Research Group OCEARCH lets you track tagged sharks -- who all have names, by the way -- as they travel all over the world. You can even zoom in on a specific location to see which sharks are hanging out there and where they've been swimming and traveling for the past year.

Rancho Sahuarita Moves to Continue Raising Awareness for Important Cancer Research

While the March 2022 Rancho Sahuarita Cancer Walk is cancelled, the funds raised and awareness shared still have profound and lasting impact.

With the current ongoing COVID-19 situation and rising case numbers, the teams of Rancho Sahuarita and the National Brain Tumor Society have announced that the 3rd Rancho Sahuarita Cancer Walk scheduled for March 12th is cancelled. The master planned community had planned to host this 3rd event, designed to raise awareness and funds in the fight against brain cancer. All fundraising efforts for the walk have and will benefit the Sharpe/NBTS Brain Cancer Research Awards through the National Brain Tumor Society, which are designed to fund groundbreaking cancer research at top institutions throughout the country.

In 2016, the National Brain Tumor Society formed a partnership with Bob and Deborah Sharpe to work with top brain tumor researchers in order to more rapidly advance research and develop new therapies for individuals with glioblastoma (GBM), an aggressive brain cancer. Since then, over $1.3 million has been raised (since the inception of the inaugural walk in 2017). Through the fundraising for the 2022 walk and the continued generosity of donors, over $300,000 has been raised through the 2022 walk initiative alone.

According to the National Brain Tumor Society, an estimated 700,000 people in the United States are living with a primary brain tumor today. Tragically, pediatric brain tumors are the leading cause of cancer-related death among children and adolescents ages 19 and younger. Currently, there is no cure for this devasting disease.

While the walk in March is cancelled, cancer does not stop. Therefore, the team at Rancho Sahuarita remains dedicated to continuing to spread the word and raise awareness of this crucial cause. Those interested in donating will still be able to do so by visiting www. ranchosahuaritacancerwalk.com. Any and all contributions make a big difference, and are greatly appreciated. More information about the important mission of the National Brain Tumor Society is also available at braintumor.org.

Trico Community Scale Solar and Battery Storage Facility Under Construction in Pinal County

by the Arizona State Land Department. The solar panels have single-axis tracking devices that automatically track the sun throughout the day to maximize power generation. The battery storage will help Trico delay the cost of transmission and distribution upgrades and manage area load in a more efficient and cost-effective manner.

Construction has started on a 10-megawatt photovoltaic solar generating facility and 15-megawatt battery storage system located on Edwin Road west of North Oracle Road, within Pinal County. The Chirreon Solar and Battery Storage Facility (Chirreon), which will serve Trico Electric Cooperative Members, is projected to be in service by summer 2022.

Chirreon will be located in the Trico service area on approximately 90 acres of land owned

Once operational the Chirreon facility will produce more than 30,000 megawatt-hours of energy each year, or enough to power about 3,000 average residential homes.

“As a non-profit cooperative, Trico is dedicated to providing its Members with energy solutions that are sustainable and cost-effective. Building a community scale solar and battery project allows our membership to share in the benefits of an economical, renewable resource. The battery storage system at Chirreon will be one of the first for a cooperative in Arizona, and shows

Trico’s commitment to serving its Members in innovative ways,” said Brian Heithoff, CEO and General Manager of Trico.

Trico, Torch Clean Energy, SOLV Energy, and CoBank have partnered on the facility. This is the second community solar project that Trico and Torch have partnered on. Through a long-standing partnership, CoBank provided the financing for this project.

“Torch is excited to again play a role in Trico’s leadership position in affordable carbon free energy. The start of construction for the Chirreon Solar and Storage project is a key milestone in their energy transition” said Jonathan Kilberg, President of Torch. “We are proud to be Trico’s partner for their first solar + storage project.”
