T

his is the season of peace, which is the eternal quest. It is what we want. It is what we pray for; but, it eludes us. In the dark days of WWII the commander of the British forces, Field Marshal Montgomery said, “The greatest single factor in the world is strength, religious strength, moral strength, economic strength, military strength. It is strength that makes for peace.”

This holiday season speaks primarily of peace. So, what is it that we are all talking about? Is peace the prize of all virtues? Is it only the absence of war? Is it something given after everyone has what they want? If we escape the turmoil of terrorism, will life be more peaceful?

My philosophy comes from the Bible, which says that peace is a by-product of righteousness. In other words, something else must first come before peace. There is peace where there is harmony.

tice. There is peace where there is honesty and truth and equity and respect.

It would be foolish to think there can be peace if people prove to be untrustworthy and pertinacious. It is right that we should pray for peace, but it is a delusion to believe peace will come when humanity does not take the necessary steps to straighten itself out.

“Love thy neighbor as thyself” are the words of Biblical wisdom. If we cannot be at peace with ourselves, we cannot be at peace with one another.

To those of a Christian mind, Christ is the Prince of Peace. To those of a Jewish culture peace is inherent in all the prophets proclaim: “For a child is born for us, a Son is given to us…. Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Therefore, “Depart from evil, and do good, seek peace and pursue it.”

by Gary Schweinshaupt, KCCH, garysch@trowel.com take my subject this month from a long-time Mason in Minnesota, Neil Neddermeyer, actually he is a Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Minnesota. I have been a subscriber of his Cinosam email newsletter for several years.

In his last newsletter he describes his journey through the mysteries of Freemasonry. He concludes: “The real reason for us to prosper is brotherhood. The glue that binds us together consists of two things. The first is the fact that we investigate each applicant as to integrity with no other judgments. The second is our obligations in the 3rd degree and with those obligations of the five points that obligate us to each other.

These allow us to instantly trust each other and bring us together. I

believe that this trust makes us better men if only through the concept of ‘group think’.

I'm convinced that our ritual, our charities, our histories and our philosophies help us bind ourselves together, but they fall short of being the true answer. What really matters is that we meet with other Brothers who we can truly trust because of every Brother's promises.”

I often wonder what keeps some of our Brothers paying dues, when a lot of them do not particate in the regular acitivity of our lodges, I agree with our MW Brother Neddermeyer—Brotherhood!

Potentate’s Notes

Nobles, It has truly been an honor serving the nobility of Sahib Shriners as your Potentate this year. There are many happy memories that will last forever.

Our Casino Night last month was a very successful activity. The nobles and ladies enjoyed themselves and hopefully we can do it again next year. Noble Fred Phillips, and his committee, worked hard to get prizes and train people to run the games. It is not an easy task to remember all the odds in roulette or craps. Black jack and poker were fun, with the dealers keeping everybody thinking about what to do next. Our thanks to the Oriental Band for the use of their equipment and support.

This month is a season of Christmas parties and some installations of new officers for clubs and units for 2013.

Our Shrine elections are December 5. These elections are so very important as you will be electing future Potentates. Also, there are openings on the C.A.A.R.F. Trust and Operating Trust. Our current Recorder Past Potentate Oscar Cloutier has indicated that he will not seek that office and two nobles have submitted their resumes.

Our Ceremonial is November 30 and December 1. Come join in welcoming these new nobles of the Mystic Shrine. Membership is an ongoing activity. It is a yearlong activity. Other than the Shriners Hospitals for Children, membership is a priority.

Without membership, there is no Shrine, and if there is no Shrine, our children could not be served.

We always look forward to the Ladies Holiday luncheon and another outstanding performance from the students of Booker High School of Performing Arts. The students are an inspiration that the next generation is ready to take on the future.

They are coming to Sahib on Thursday, December 13.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, enjoy the holidays with fun and fellowship with your fellow nobles and their ladies. Our Unit and Club Christmas party is Tuesday December 18. Come and join us if you can.

want to wish a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and holiday season, to all of you dedicated nobles. In addition, to all our officers-elect I wish the very best. You are dedicating your life to a great cause, Shriners Hospital for Children. Keep in mind “We Put Children First.” With your help, Sahib Shriners will continue to be the great fraternal temple that it has always been.

I want to sincerely thank you for giving me your support and cooperation during the last 11 years. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of my service to

Sahib Shriners. I certainly will miss all the daily interactions that take place at Sahib when you are deeply involved in daily activities.

I am looking forward to assisting as Co-Chairman of the 2013 Sahib Shrine Circus. This will keep me involved at Sahib.

It’s time for me get back to playing golf!!

I

have been very fortunate in my life to have so many friends from so many paths of life; and so many people that consider me a friend. I want to thank all who have sent cards, called, visited and kept me in their prayers. All have said they would do whatever they could and all that I have asked for specific favors have responded.

On a personal level, I’d like to let you know that Vince and Dolly Flow have been most responsive.

Cub Dickerson has certainly stepped forward and done many things for me beyond those duties of being my Chief Aide. His, and Dolores’, personal assistance are much appreciated.

I don’t want to be accused of favoritism in that “all” I have talked to have offered help and got the jobs done. Certainly, members of the Divan and the Sahib office have been most helpful in assisting and picking up the slack where needed. I love all the nobles and their wives for all they have done. Fortunately, much of the work for 2013 has already been

done and we were just “Cleaning Up.” This is as it should be.

One of my favorite events has been the Christmas Party for Sahib Shrine Children which this year is Saturday, December 8. I’m sure Jesus Cabalo has held up his end by organizing all of those attending.

Noble Charles Hamilton and his Lady Mary Jane have done a terrific job of overseeing and running the show. Thank you! Thank you!

During the Christmas Party, the Aides will be under the guidance of Chief Aide Bud Glidden. The Oriental Band, Clowns and Santa Claus will all contribute to the festivities. In addition, my Lady Stacey Lee and all of the other Divan ladies will be there to help out and participate where they can.

Unfortunately, I cannot move my left leg in any way that would allow me to type on a computer, so I have had to ask my Chief Aide to help me get this message out. Thank you! . . .continued on page 38

easons Greetings to all! No, this is not Christmas in July, it really is December. Where oh where did this year go? The month of December is probably the busiest of the year for many of us. With it starting with our Ceremonial and all those holiday parties and parades.

Wendy and I will be especially busy preparing for the East/West Game. I have been appointed as Transportation Manager and Wendy has been added to the E/W office staff and will be organizing transportation for the players coming to town. Plus, with all this going on, we will still put together the best darn tailgate party in all of East/West Shrine Game history! We are hoping on five busloads of fans. Make sure to get your tickets packages so you can be a part of the fourth annual Sahib Shrine Game Trip.

On December 5, we will have our Stated Meeting with Election of Officers. There will be some very important positions that need to be filled, so make sure this date is marked on your calendars. This year has been very rewarding for me as your Assistant Rabban, my travels to other Shrines, Imperial Session, schooling and my work at Imperial Headquarters. I look forward to the coming years and hope if I can help with any projects for the good of the Shrine, count me in.

Wendy and I wish to extend Happy Holidays and a Prosperous New Year to all and their families.

Keep the children of our Shriners Hospitals for Children, our doctors and nurses in your prayers and that all our service people are safe, that they may have a chance to be with their loved ones and families this holiday season.

Marie had the audience’s full attention as she described her daughter’s challenges with spina bifida and how future mothers could avoid the affliction simply by taking folic acid. reetings, Brother nobles, this will be my last article before our next president is installed. I want to thank my Brother nobles for the support I received. Our new President, David Rowe, is a hard working and dedicated individual, who has the utmost regard for our tenets. Go for it, David.

I would also like to express our gratitude to Ray Perez, who is stepping down as our dinner-dance coordinator, due to failing eyesight. Over the years, he has put in many tiring hours for the Shrine in many capacities. He worked the ball games at the Imported Beer stand for many years, and I believe he worked every game. He is a member of the Provost

Guard, directing traffic control. He was active in the Kentucky Colonels, and an Aide to the Divan. These are just a few of the activities in which he participated. Thank you, Ray! Our Christmas Dinner-Dance will be held at Tara Country Club, 6602 Drewrys Bluff, Bradenton. Social Hour is 6:00-7:00 p.m., dinner will be served at 7:00-8:00 p.m. and dancing will start at 8:00 p.m. until ?. Motor Corps Shrine Club

ope you were able to join your fellow Shriners, ladies and friends at the Motor Corps’ Spaghetti Dinner on Sunday, November 4. We served 227 plates of spaghetti according to our ticket taker, Past Potentate Lou Ortt, 33°. A big thanks to all who helped make this event a success. In addition to our dinner guests, we thank Motor Corps members, fellow Shriners, our ladies and all volunteers, to include the Rainbow Girls, who helped.

The Spaghetti dinner also afforded us an opportunity to begin sales on our Booze Wagon. This was our first event for the Booze Wagon, so rest assured we’ll have even more top shelf beverages in the wagon over the next several weeks. We also sold Sahib 30th Anniversary ball caps and chances on a 50/50 at the spaghetti dinner. Congratulations to Marylou Ellis who won $53 in the 50/50.

Several Motor Corps members participated in the Scottish Rite Reunion in Tampa on November 3 and 10. The SCI rehabilitation programs, offered at three of our hospitals, provide comprehensive care that helps patients adapt to the changes in their lives and lead full, active and healthy lives. Meet three former patients with SCI whose experiences with the health care system have played a pivotal role in their personal and professional success.

Juan Gonzales - Making Big Strides in Life Growing up in Oakdale, Calif., Juan Gonzales was an up-and-coming bull rider. At age 15, Gonzalez sustained a spinal cord injury when he was thrown from a bull.

“I’ll never forget that day,” said Gonzales, who came to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California for care and rehabilitation. “Shriners Hospitals really got me on track and helped me see life in a new perspective,” said Gonzales.

As a student in the hospital’s school, Gonzales worked with the vocational resource specialist to identify suitable career paths, and decided to pursue counseling and psychology. He gained practical experience helping others by becoming a hospital volunteer.

In December 2011, Gonzales received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from California State University Stanislaus and hopes to be a counselor.

“I want to help young people know they can overcome challenges and find enjoyment in life,” said Gonzales.

Bill Bogdan - Former Patient Works to Improve Lives of People with Disabilities Bill Bogdan, 41, was born with a neuroblastoma that left him with a SCI. He first came to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago at age 3.

“The hospital helped me become the person I am today,” said Bogdan, who, in addition to being successfully employed, is a husband, father and homeowner.

As a young man, Bogdan volunteered at his local township’s committee on disability while he was earning his associate’s degree. His accomplishments caught the attention of Chicago’s Mayor’s Office for

People with Disabilities, where Bogdan eventually became assistant to the director. In 1998 he became the disability liaison for the Secretary of State and in 2010 Bogdan was appointed chair of the Illinois Council on Developmental Disabilities (ICDD) by the governor.

Bogdan is now a Shriner and hopes to become more active in the fraternity that founded and operates the health care system.

Micki Greenstein - Shriners Hospitals Helped Him Have a Positive Outlook on Life When Micki Greenstein was 13 years old, he dove head-first into a shallow creek and was paralyzed.

Greenstein was treated at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Philadelphia.

“When I first came to Shriners Hospitals, I was depressed and didn’t want to do anything to improve,” said Greenstein. “The staff stuck by me and helped me realize that I had my whole life ahead of me.”

Now 34, Greenstein is a hardworking, motivated individual with a positive outlook on life. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in general studies from Philadelphia Community College, Greenstein worked for several years in the nonprofit field. His passion is computers; he hopes one day to work in Web design or teach classes in computer skills.

These three stories clearly indicate the long-term impact Shriners Hospitals for Children has on its patients.

ur President, John Winters expressed his pride at the Greeter attendance at the parades this year. Our trailer has been full with Greeters, great job! Thanks to John Julian who will be towing our trailer this year.

Great job to all who worked “Casino Nite and a “well done” to all who took shifts on November 16 and 17 for Hospital Days.

The Greeters lost a Brother and a great friend on October 20; Dave Dickerson was called home by our

Great Creator. Dave who was also known as “Sarge,” was a gentle compassionate man. He served as Greeter president in 2000, and worked on many committees and projects at our temple. For over a year, Dave battled several illnesses; he will be missed.

There are no birthdays for December. Happy Holidays!

he officers and Legion of Honor nobles would like to extend to all nobles and their families the merriest of Christmases and a Happy 2013 New Year.

Our Flag Retirement Program is doing very well.

To date I have delivered over 400 flags to be retired to our new source. They are very grateful and will take all I can deliver. Remember: our Flag Retirement Program is now open to the public to bring in flags for retirement. So please spread the word and collect those flags. I have arranged with Bingo Boss Man Past Potentate Don Vos to have them give out one free bingo card for each flag to be retired brought in by any player.

A great win-win arrangement for the Legion of Honor and the general public bingo players.

This will be the last article I write for the monthly LOH article in the Reporter. Too many restrictions have been placed on me, for my liking, as to what I have to write about and what subjects I can and cannot write about; I wish the new editor well.

As of the first of November, and this writing, the LOH currently has 61 dues paying members. We have inducted two new members this year but also have lost two members to the Black Camel. Nobles Bieser and Bohencamp have laid down their working tools.

Mariners

reetings from the Mariners, it’s hard to believe the end of the year is almost here. I have enjoyed being the commodore for 2012. The year has gone extremely fast and I feel I am just now getting the hang of things. I’m happy with what we have accomplished this year with many good times being had by all.

The Mariners have had another busy month starting with the Commodore’s Ball. What a great weekend. It all started on Thursday with our FSMYCA guests attending the Hillbilly dinner at the Shrine.

Friday dinner was provided by the Sahib Mariners with Jack Bryant’s famous finger licking baby back ribs. Wow, he did it again, they were wonderful.

Thanks to Jack and Marty and all other Mariners and mates that provided food and attended this wonderful evening. Saturday started with the FSMYCA meeting at the hotel followed by boat races at a nearby lake. Yes, real toy remote control boats with grown men at the controls. There were nine boats with each driver having his chance to lap the everchanging course for the best time. There were times from around 1½ minutes to 29 seconds with a second race to try to improve your time. The best times recorded was a boat owned by FSMYCA Commodore Ken Pedersen, pit crew Past Commodore FSMYCA Tom Hardin and driven by me. It wasn’t that we were

good it was that the other teams were bad. A trophy was presented at the ball.

Saturday evening was the Commodore’s Ball. Everything was perfect and everyone had a great time.

I want to thank Vice Commodore Mel Collins and his crew that decorated the hall, Past Commodore Bud Glidden for being the emcee and Kim Jenkins for providing my kind of music. A big thank you to the chef and staff for an excellent meal and everyone that worked hard and all that attended to make this a very special night for Sara and me. The Past Commodore’s Picnic was attended by 46 Mariners, mates and friends. Everyone brought their favorite picnic dish with our chefs, LaBell, Hardin, Dickerson and their helpers doing a great job with the brats, burgers and dogs. What a perfect day for a picnic, the weather couldn’t have been better. There was a 50/50 drawing with $66 paid out to “Lucky” Assistant Fleet Captain Jon Neary. There was another drawing for a set of golf clubs donated by PC Bud Glidden and again the winner was “Lucky” Jon Neary. It was another great party.

The Mariner’s Christmas Party will be held on Wednesday, December 19 at Marina Jack, social time starting at 6:00 p.m. with dinner at 7:00 p.m. Kim

Oriental Band

he year 2012 has come to its end. Much has happened at our temple and all around us. We must be very grateful and thank the Great Architect of the Universe to have spared the great State of Florida from the ravages of Hurricane Sandy. Our hearts go out to all that have and will suffer from this tragedy. Americans are resilient and we will come out of this.

The Oriental Band wants to congratulate Fred Ellis on being named “Class Honoree” of the Sahib Shriners Fall Ceremonial.

The calendar of the O.B. has been quite busy.

Rehearsals have been held on a regular basis. We participated in the Englewood Pioneer Days Parade, the Venice Sun Fiesta Parade, the Venice Christmas Parade, the Sahib Fall Ceremonial, the Sarasota Christmas Parade and of course, we’re looking forward to the Sahib Children’s Christmas Party on December 8.

This will be the first time that the O.B. has joined forces with other clubs and units celebrating Christmas together; I’m sure it will be a great evening on December 18.

Election of Sahib Divan will be held December 5, we urge all nobles to attend this important meeting.

On behalf of the Great Sahib Oriental Band, the best band in the land, I want to wish all ladies and nobles a very Merry and Blessed Christmas and a Happy, healthy and safe New Year.

Remember, support your Shrine, collect pull-tabs, plastic bottle caps and keep a child in your heart.

Let me just say that we could not have accomplished what we did without each one of you. And a big “Thank You” to our units, clubs and Divan who came through with lots of support in the form of prize donations, volunteer workers, players and encouragement.

It was a fun evening and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. It wasn’t quite like Las Vegas but we did have a few “high rollers.” The admission price included a container of chips to be used at blackjack, craps, roulette, spin the wheel, and poker tables which were manned by volunteer workers from units and clubs. Players with the highest number of chips at the end of the evening got to choose from the many prizes contributed by units, clubs, nobles, members of the divan and businesses. Surprisingly, the bigticket prize of a weeks stay at a Georgia mountain

resort within easy driving time in late July 2013 was not taken until the fifth highest chip count.

Key to the success of this event was the Oriental Band’s contribution of their equipment and background knowledge which they acquired by putting on similar events in the past. Unfortunately, they can no longer do such things alone. This brings up an important point that was brought to the forefront while planning the Casino Night and is well known here at Sahib. And that is the limited capability, in most cases, of our units and clubs to sponsor or support activities on their own due to their aging, physical limitations and declining membership. In the case of the Casino Night, the Unit Council and committee members were able to coordinate the efforts of everyone. Although we did not make a lot of money, we did learn a lot and I’m sure we’ll have better results next time. We now know that we can accomplish a lot by pooling our resources and efforts. And that is important if we are to make meaningful and worthwhile contributions to support Sahib, our Shriners Hospitals for Children and most importantly our kids.

W

ow, where has the year gone? Is it me, or are the years passing too fast? Thanksgiving dinner at the Shrine was great.

It has been a good year for me and I am very proud to be a member of the greatest Shrine in all North America. Serving as your High Priest and Prophet has been a privilege and I can only say “thanks” for entrusting the job to me. Being on the Divan has been a great learning and an eye opening experience.

Working with such a great group of Sahib nobles is a pleasure. We always strive to make things better for

“our Shrine and for our Kids”. I have enjoyed being with the nobles of all the units and clubs who made me feel at home whenever I was able to be with you.

The holiday parties will soon start and Lady Deanie and I want to wish each and every one of you, and your family, the very best of the Christmas holiday season and a super 2013.

Especially if you’re traveling, have a very safe and a joyous Christmas season.

Stay healthy and remember those who are not!

Oriental Guide’s notes

hat have I been up to in November? Helped at a Great Casino Nite! If you weren’t there, you missed a great time a tip of the Fez to Unit Council Director Fred Phillips, Floyd LaDue, leader of the greatest Oriental Band in the USA and all of the volunteers that helped. It was a lot of fun for all! I hope if it is done another year that they can attract a bigger crowd.

We have a great supporting staff of nobles going in to line in January. Chief Rabban Bill has worked very hard to make sure we will be fully staffed with nobles willing and able to carry on in the years to come. Be at the December 5 Stated Meeting to meet the newly appointed 1st and 2nd Ceremonial Masters and help elect all the additional Divan members. You have a choice and it is your right to exercise it.

Our Pancake Breakfast crew is going strong, but there is always room for more workers. Join us on the first Sunday of each month. Sandy and I are regulars along with most of the Divan group. Come have some fun and help your temple.

We are looking forward to a great Veterans Salute to the Armed Forces program headed up by the Legion Of Honor I am sure it was well received and attended, as it should be.

I am almost at a stand still at this writing. I don’t have anything more to add.

Our Membership out reach has ended for December. We all need a rest! We have been very busy and after a while, the message gets stale so we are taking a break till January.

I

t has been a busy year and an interesting one. As a unit, the Divan has done much to make your dues and fundraising dollars spread further. It has been very difficult, as our membership has declined, as has our fundraising, while our needs for our thirtyyear-old building continue to increase. This coming year promises to be even more challenging. Of course, the Divan members of the line are expected to all move up, and we will have a Recorder, Oriental Guide and Ceremonials who are new to the job. If you will have me, I have informed our Chief Rabban Bill that I will serve another year as your treasurer and provide the continuity from this year.

My wife and I have not been able to participate in the many activities scheduled for the month of November because we have been able to bring one of her long time wishes to fruition. We traveled to Africa for over three weeks of observing the many animals in their habitat. I am sure that when we return after Thanksgiving, we will have some fantabulous stories for you.

As we head into the holiday season of December, keep in mind the true meaning of the season and be thankful for the ability to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Enjoy your families and be safe.

Bingo Report

obles, I appreciate all of you helping with our Bingo venture. The reports keep right on coming with the good news and the funds that your Shrine needs.

In October, we honored Noble Jack Ivins, our very own Mister Bingo. With all of his help and energy, including all of his emails to our Bingo players, he keeps everyone up-to-date with our Bingo programs.

Halloween was another good time for our players; they all came in very unique costumes, and kept everyone entertained.

We gave Noble Jack a trip to Key West for two days, and the boat trip from Fort Myers was included, all paid by for by your Bingo program.

Also, the sale of new Bingo shirts is off to a good start, and the costs are inexpensive.

Very important dates coming up for Bingo: Sahib will be closed for Christmas on December 25, Bingo will be held on Wednesday, December 26. The same is true for New Years on January 1, Bingo will be played on January 2.

Hospital Days

ood day nobles, where has 2012 gone? Here it is December 1 and your club or unit’s planning for “Hospital Days” in February is or should be well on the way; sites selected, agreements signed with store managers and collection teams being set up. If these things haven’t been done; perhaps you should be asking why?

In the past “Hospital Days” has been held on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday just prior to the NFL’s Super Bowl. This has been usually the first weekend in February. This year it may be necessary to expand our collection days from those mentioned above to possibly the weekends of the whole month of

February. This possible change is due to the dwindling number of nobles and ladies that greet and collect from the public at each individual site.

February 2012, saw a significant “turn around” as far as the total of money collected compared to the last couple of years. Funds raised during “Hospital Days” this year were in excess of $45,000. The goal for 2013 is to exceed $55,000.

I ask each and every one of you to make a time commitment to Sahib and more especially to our kids and physically support this critical fundraiser.

even-year-old Shriner Hospitals for Children Patient Wins the Hearts of Shriners at Luncheon.

At the Shriners weekly luncheon on November 1 our special guest speaker was Marie Bailey the mother of Sophia one of our Shriners Hospital for Children patients (see photo on page 9.) Sophia was born in 2005 with spina bifida which is a birth defect which creates many complications with your nerves, muscles, brain, bowels and bladder. The severity of spina bifida varies according to where it is located on the backbone. Marie pointed out that spina bifida can be prevented if women of childbearing age take folic acid daily before pregnancy. At 18 weeks pregnant Marie was told her unborn child has spina bifida and she was offered to schedule an abortion. She decided against an abortion and named the child Sophia which means “wisdom” in Greek.

At one-month-old, Sophia had her first visit with our Shriners Hospital in Tampa. She needed casts on both of her legs, a second surgery and weekly hospital visits. It was on her second hospital visit, she was told about the Shriners temple in Sarasota and the service they offered in transporting patients and family to and from home and our hospital. This service became a major source of relief for Marie and her

child. Sophia was casted for 14 weeks at the Shriners Hospital and each week with a smile, the Shriners showed up at her door to take them to the hospital.

Thanks to the Shriners, Marie was given the knowledge of all the resources available to help her be strong and take care of her daughter. They see a long list of specialists and therapists who have helped Sophia set goals and reach them far beyond what was first thought possible. To date Sophia has had 44 visits to our Shriners Hospital.

Marie concluded her talk on the importance to make awareness of spina bifida. She also expressed great gratitude to Shriners and the Transportation drivers who consistently go out of their way to make their trips to and from the hospital so pleasant.

Marie urged all our Shriners to get behind the current Fall Fundraiser for Hospital Days so there will be funds available to continue this wonderful service.

Throughout Marie’s talk, her daughter Sophia enjoyed her ice cream, smiled at everyone who came near and seemed so unfazed that she has two prosthesis legs, relies on a walker and wheel chair. Her smile was worth a thousand words. She certainly won our hearts.

y fellow Nobles, current Masons who hopefully will become future nobles and your ladies, along with all, whether a Mason or not, who care about children this is for you. I would like to offer a way you can be of assistance to our children who get care at our Shriners Hospital for Children.

As you probably are aware, we do not turn away a child, if there is a reasonable possibility they can benefit from the specialized services available. The areas we work with include orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries as well as cleft lip and palate. Hopefully you also are aware that "regardless of the patients or families ability to pay" they will be treated if it is something we cover.

As the Donor Relations Chairman for Sahib Shriners and the Tampa Shriner's Hospital for Children, I am asking you to consider a program with which I am very involved.

It is called the Plaque Program which you can be a proud participant with a contribution of only $100. (It can be more if you wish) The program is set up for five years but you make your decision each year what you wish to do.

Every year you participate, you would donate a minimum of $100. You will receive a lovely plaque the first year inscribed as you tell us and then

each succeeding year, up through the fifth, when you send in your donation, you will receive an engraved year piece to put on your plaque.

The holiday season is upon us and regardless of what faith you are, we celebrate in many ways. Here is an opportunity to give and receive at the same time. You get the knowledge that you are helping a child in need and the child receives the help needed.

Also, donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law, when check is made out to "Shriners Hospital for Children" as 100% of your contribution goes directly to the hospital.

AN EXCERPT FROM GENERAL ORDER NO. 1: FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES It is natural to associate the fez with Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Because of this, meticulous attention must be given to all fundraising activities, including circuses, to make certain that such activities comply with the law of the land and that a contributor is not led to believe that his money will be used for the Hospitals when all or a portion thereof will be used otherwise. The integrity of our charity and of our fraternity must remain above reproach.

Your specific attention is called to the following fraternal and charitable bylaws: §335.3 USE OF NAME “SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN.” The use of the name “Shriners Hospitals for Children” or reference to the Hospitals in connection with any fundraising activity by a temple or Noble without the written consent of the Imperial Potentate and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Hospitals is prohibited. §503.10 The use of the name “Shriners Hospitals for Children” or reference to the Hospitals in connection with any commercial product or business enterprise is prohibited unless the written consent of the Board of Directors and Trustees has been first obtained.

Now, therefore, IT IS HEREBY ORDERED: 1. Fundraising for Fraternal Purposes: (a) No Noble (in his capacity as a Shriner), club, unit, organization of Nobles or affiliated or appendant corporations shall engage in any fundraising activity without the express written consent of the potentate of the temple having jurisdiction thereof. (b) There can be no representation, express or implied, that the proceeds will be for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children. (c) The temple potentate shall carefully examine all phases of the advertising, promotion and solicitation to determine that it complies with §335.3 and §503.11 of the fraternal and charitable bylaws. (d) The temple potentate must approve the terms and provisions of any contract for a fundraising activity after receiving the advice of the temple attorney, and additionally, as may be required by the temple bylaws. (e) A copy of the temple potentate’s written consent shall be mailed to the Executive Vice President, Shriners International. Further, such written material pertaining to the fundraising activity, as requested by the Executive Vice President, Shriners International shall be promptly mailed to him.

2. Fundraising for Charitable Purposes: (a) No Noble (in his capacity as a Shriner), club, unit, organization of Nobles or affiliated or appendant corporations shall engage in any charitable fundraising activity other than for Shriners Hospitals for Children, and said activity shall not be in the jurisdiction of any other temple. Permission therefore must be first obtained in writing from the temple potentate. The temple potentate must then obtain written permission from the Chairmen of the Boards of Directors and Trustees. This request for written permission shall be sent to the Executive Vice President, Shriners International, P.O. Box 31356, Tampa, FL 33631-3356.

However, a joint charitable fundraising activity with another §501(c)(3) charity may be authorized provided that a minimum of 50% of the net proceeds are for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children, and the Chairmen of the Boards of Directors and Trustees determine, on a case by case basis, that it is in the best interest of Shriners Hospitals for Children and they grant their written permission for the activity. (b) 100% of net proceeds (as defined in the Charitable Fund RaisingApproval And Reporting provisions of any existing General Order) from charitable fundraising must be given to Shriners Hospitals for Children except for such portion thereof as may be permitted to be retained for the temple Shrine Hospital Patient

Transportation Fund, pursuant to the Special Purpose Funds provisions of any existing General Order. Provided, however, if the Chairmen of the Boards of Directors and Trustees determine for good cause shown, that the law of the land requires that a portion of the net proceeds must be distributed locally, then they may, if they determine it to be in the best interest of Shriners Hospitals for Children, grant their written permission for such distribution. (c) The temple shall report the result of each charitable fundraising activity within sixty days of the activity, pursuant to the Charitable Fund Raising–Approval And Reporting provision of any existing General Order. (d) This section shall not apply to activities exempt under §335.4(b) of the bylaws of Shriners International. (e) Each independent corporation or entity that receives the permission of the Chairmen of the Boards of Directors and Trustees to raise money for Shriners Hospitals for Children, and which does not have its financial statements reviewed pursuant to §334.6 & §337.8 of the bylaws of Shriners International, shall have its financial statements audited by a certified, chartered or licensed public accountant and shall submit such audit report to Shriners International within 120 days of the activity.

3. Statement of Purpose and Disclosure: (a) Every fundraising activity must contain factual information on its solicitation material, tickets, programs and documents, including all electronically transmitted materials, regarding the use of the proceeds.

Examples: “Proceeds are for the benefit of ( Shriners) ( Shrine Club) activities.”

“Proceeds are for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children.” (b) Every fundraising activity which is not entirely for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children shall prominently state on the solicitation material, tickets and documents that “payments are not deductible as charitable contributions.” (c) There must be compliance with the Revenue Act of 1987 provision of any existing general order by U.S. temples.

4. Compliance with Applicable Laws: It is the responsibility of the temple potentate, after receiving the advice of the temple attorney, to determine that there is compliance with all applicable laws in its jurisdiction for the temple’s fundraising activities.

5. Financial Records: (a) The temple shall maintain detailed financial records pertaining to all fundraising activities involving Nobles, clubs, units, organizations of Nobles and affiliated and appendant corporations.

Details of all revenues and expenditures shall be maintained in such financial records. (b) The temple must retain such detailed financial records for a period of seven (7) years. (c) There must be compliance with Financial Reporting on Charitable Funds and Activities provision of any existing general order.

6. Notification to Nobility: A copy of the Fundraising Activities provisions of any existing general order shall be printed in the temple publication at least once every calendar year. If there is no temple publication, then a copy shall be mailed to each Noble in the temple not later than the last day in March of each calendar year.

7. Discipline: Any officer, Noble or temple which violates a provision of Fundraising Activities is subject to discipline pursuant to the bylaws of Shriners International.

Three Motor Corps members have been elected as officers of the Knights of the Eagle chapter of the Widows Sons Masonic Riders Association for 2013.

Scott Steelman will be serving as president; Theo Vruels will be first vice president; and Paul Woodman will be second vice president.

The Motor Corps participated in the Venice Holiday Parade on Saturday, November 24. We’ll also participate in the Shrine Ceremonial Parade and the Sarasota Holiday Parade on December 1 and the North Port Holiday Parade on December 8. Cooler weather is good for the air cooled Harley Davidson motorcycles.

We have a few birthdays and anniversaries to report in December. Birthdays this month are: Lady Beatty Shipley on the 12th and Tony Galanti (Deuce) on the 19th. We have three anniversaries in December. Paul Woodman (Wood Dog) and Lady Sue (Puppy), Jeff Young (Snowman) and Lady Muriel (Snow Angel) both on the 17th and Scott Steelman (Gray Fox) and Lady Joni (Jupe) on the 31st.

Well it is!!

So, ladies prepare yourselves for many fun things including the Sahib Pancake Breakfast on December 2 where the Court’s Songbird Unit will set up their table selling items you cannot live without!

Then the L.O.S.N.A. holiday party on Wednesday, December 5. And on December 9 Stated Meeting and Candy Cane March. Lots to look forward to; so mark your calendars!!

And I’m always happy to have this opportunity to wish each of you ladies and your families’ happy, healthy holidays!

And I’m sure that not one of you ladies will get “coal” in your stockings because you have all been so good! Right?

Now to go back a bit and worth while doing so I heard that on a beautiful October day the Annual Venice Sun Fiesta Parade was held and Lady Marylou Ellis, PHP, “Baby” a ‘57 Chevy Belair hardtop (see photo below) was a real hit!!! Passengers were Ladies Marlies Gluck-Upton, PHP, Pat Dennis, Princess and Kerry Van Fleet. I have seen her beautiful car and it is indeed special and I can understand why it and the passengers were a hit at the parade!

I’ll see you in Court. God willing and the creek don’t rise that is!

Cortez High Twelve Club

s we look back on that freak storm “Sandy” the end of October and into November we are very thankful for it passing over most of Florida. We send our prayers and thoughts to all of those, not just our fellow Masons, who are also Shriner’s, Hi-Twelvians, etc. and their ladies, but to all that had any contact with the storm and its aftermath. I know that for many who had contact with this storm that you may be in for some difficult times ahead but with the help of the Great Architect of the Universe you will make it.

As for Cortez Hi-12 Club #538 we are starting out the month of December with the 50th Florida State Masonic High Twelve Annual Convention being held only 1 ½ - 2 hrs away in nearby New Port Richey on Monday, December 3. I do hope many of our Cortez Hi-Twelvians and their ladies are taking the opportunity to attend this one-day session. For all information about it go to the Florida State Hi-12 website <http://FLHI12.org>, click on “Welcome to Florida High Twelve Official Website” and follow the instructions.

As you will notice, the convention is on one of our regular club meeting dates. We know that not all of you will be attending the convention so we are still planning on holding our High 12 luncheon. However, it will be just a nice get together with no formal agenda. We will arrange for someone to pick up the meal funds from you and turn them in like always.

We hope all of you that are unable to attend the convention will come to Duff’s Original Buffet and keep each other company and share a happy time together. In fact, if any of you have a happy or funny story to share bring it along. Who knows, you may

even get some newcomers and we know you will make them feel at home and remind them to come again the following week, etc.

And speaking of newcomers we hope over the weeks ahead several more of you will join with us for food and fun. We meet each Monday, November through April, at Duff’s Original Buffet which is at the corner of Route 41 (Tamiami Trail) and 60th Avenue in Bradenton. We usually arrive between 10:30 and 11:00 a.m. We eat at 11:00 a.m. and start our happenings around noon. Do not pay when you enter but come to our private room over to the side and check in and pay there so you get the discount. A fun day with humor, food, good companionship, Masonic information and maybe some special goings on. Also, remember that ladies of members or guests are always invited and encouraged to attend.

In fact one of these special goings on is held the second Monday of each month starting with December 10. It is an auction made up of items each of us have that is new or in good working condition that you do not need any more but will be a delight to someone else. Remember what is one person’s socalled junk is another person’s treasure. The auction starts after we finish the day’s happenings and the proceeds are used for our annual picnic in the spring.

his year I had the opportunity to briefly attend the International Order of Rainbow for Girls Grand Assembly due to schedule conflicts, and attend the full 2012 Florida DeMolay Conclave and all I can say is WOW!!!

My Brothers if you are not actively involved in the support of one of the Youth Groups all I can say is you’re missing the boat. We often speak of the youth of our country and where we are going, yet we have three thriving Masonic Groups that are growing by leaps and bounds and somehow we are either completely ignorant of this fact as Masons or we know it and worse, we forget about them.

If we are truly concerned about the future of our country and the youth of today, attend one of the group’s meetings and you will take home with you the satisfaction that there are Good young men and women out there being taught good moral principles, truly good American ethics and all of this while we celebrate motherhood, fatherhood and family values.

You will be impressed in the manner they conduct their business and debate their future, how they handle adversities and how they use logic in their reasoning. These are remarkable young men and women, that you will be proud to say you are associated with and that will give you faith in tomorrow and will make you proud to be a Mason.

This year I have reached out to some of the Allied and Appendant Bodies to play a larger role in our youth’s future. Everyone that has committed to participating or attending their annual meetings returned home with a different perspective, hopeful that our Masonic Family legacy can be left to these young people and rest assured they will be in good hands.

Now what we need is for the Masonic Family to have an epiphany and come together in the support of these young people. I am calling on every Lodge, Chapter, Council, Commandery, Consistory, Shrine, OES, Amaranth, etc. But more especially to the indi. . .continued on page 44

e are proud as Masons to repeat the words of some of America’s most honored Clergy regarding Christianity and Masonry.

Carl J. Sanders, Bishop of the United Methodist Church and holder of the highest honor conferred by the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, writes, “My Masonic activities have never interfered with my loyalty to and my love for my church. Quite; to the contrary, my loyalty to my church has been strengthened by my Masonic ties. Good Masons are good Churchmen.”

Dr. James P. Wesberry, Executive Director and editor of the Baptist publication Sunday writes, “It is no secret that Masons love and revere the Bible nor is it a secret that Masonry helped to preserve it in the darkest age of the church when infidelity sought to destroy it. The Bible meets Masons with its sacred

message at every step of progress in its various degrees.”

The Reverend Louis Grant, 33° Mason and District Superintendent of the Methodist Church writes, “Let no one say you cannot be a Christian and a Mason at the same time. I know too many who are both and proud to be both.”

All faiths have found value in the fraternity.

s we approach the celebrations of December some excerpts from an article by Rabbi H. Greffen seem very appropriate to help us better understand their meanings.

“One of the cardinal principles and teaching of Freemasonry is tolerance. Masonry teaches us to hold to our own religion to the religion of our fathers, but at the same time honor the religious convictions of our fellow men. This sublime quality of tolerance we may learn from Yuletide and the Feast of Maccabees called Hanukkah.”

“There is a close analogy between these two historical, traditional feasts. Both of them are symbolized by kindling lights, which is a Masonic symbol of great significance. Both of them fall at almost the same time, in the beginning of the winter; their origin differs only by 160 years.”

“Hanukkah and Christmas are feasts of tolerance.

How different they are, in their conception, and yet how near in analogy. Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Temple at Jerusalem by the victorious Maccabees after its pollution by the Syrians in 162 B.C. The altar fire was kindled anew and the lights of the sacred candlesticks were relit as the beginning of a celebration which lasted eight days.”

“Christmas symbolizes human sympathy and kindness in all men. As the offspring of a Jewish parent

religion, it set forth to combat heathenism and idolatry. According to the Christian concept, it constitutes a rededication to the service of humanity through its teachings of tolerance, love, forgiveness and unselfishness.”

“Hanukkah and Christmas revolutionized the world by gradually annihilating idolatry and heathenism, and implanting humanity unselfishness in the hearts of men. They paved the way for the worship of one God, the Great Architect of the Universe.”

“The purpose of these two feasts and Masonry is to give mankind unity in his soul, holiness in his thoughts and emotions, consolation in his troubles, aid in distress, and hope and courage in his journey through life.”

“Studying the history of Freemasonry and the teachings of the two religions … from their earliest beginning, we see that the ideals of all three derived from the Power that made man. It is the Power which has led him along the hard path of progress and elevated him gradually from the condition of an animal to that of responsible man.”

I ask you to please join with me in thanking these souls of everything that is wholesome for the godly services they are providing to our future. Their involvement in our youth’s lives makes a difference and for that we should be truly grateful.

My Brothers and Sisters, you too have an opportunity to join, to make a difference. Let it not be said that we had an opportunity to make a difference in a

child’s life and that we walked away.

Remember our children are one of Gods greatest gifts to mankind, and it should be our constant care that they have an opportunity to succeed.

“The History of Corky’s Cupboard”

C

oreen Brownell, “Corky”, came up with the idea in 1990, to hand out sundry items and health & beauty aids to residents (of the Florida Masonic Home,) received from donations.

She was a member of the Masonic Home Service Guild whose members volunteer here and who are also Eastern Star members. She initiated a state-wide plea for donations and they started coming in from Lodges and Chapters, and once a week, an area in the “Mailroom”

was opened and named in her honor, “Corky”s Cupboard”, for the purpose of supplying the residents with daily toiletry needs.

Corky ran the Cupboard for many years until her passing. It continues to be run by the Service Guild, and is entirely sustained through kind donations of items, and cash to buy the items the residents need the most!

The Masonic Home of Florida would like to thank all of you who have made

Ceremonial Installation of Officers 2013

have planned an installation for all officers, elected, appointed for the Divan and for all club and unit officers.

This will be a formal affair with the Divan in black tux, and other unit and club officers in their formal attire or black tux with Fez. This affair is also for the ladies to join in at $20 per person.

After the installation of all officers, the ladies will do the Fezzing and the Junior Past Potentate is Fezzed by the lady of his choice.

The program will be held on Wednesday, January 2, 2013 and will begin at 5:00 p.m. Illustrious Sir Dale LaBell, Potentate 2007, will be the Installation

Officer and Illustrious Sir Oscar Cloutier, Potentate 2009, will be the Installing Marshal. Noble Carroll Scribner will give the benediction. The dinner and dancing will follow with music by Taylor and Taylor.

Music plays till 10:30 p.m.

I’m looking forward to a full evening with many nobles and their ladies present.

Invitations will go out December 6, 2012 and will have a return date which must be adhered to; all items have to be ordered early due to the holidays.

Broadway loves Shriners Hospitals for Children

n Monday, December 3, 2012, stars from past and present Broadway shows will perform in a onenight-only New York concert event to benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children. The benefit will be held at the beautiful and historic Grand Lodge Masonic Hall located in the heart of Manhattan at 23rd Street and 6th Avenue.

Hosted by award-winning Broadway leading lady Donna Kane (Les Miserables, Meet Me In St. Louis)

with musical supervision by Mark Hartman (Avenue Q, Sondheim on Sondheim), the concert will include performances of popular show tunes and holiday classics.

All proceeds from the night’s event will benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children – Philadelphia.

Shriners Hospitals for Children Encourages Safe Driving to Help Reduce the Risk of Spinal Cord Injury

Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death for those between the ages of 16 and 24, and the leading cause of spinal cord injuries in all age groups. Nearly 6,000 teens die and more than 325,000 are seriously injured in traffic accidents each year. Approximately one in five new teenage drivers will be involved in a crash within the first year of becoming a licensed driver. Improving driving skills, especially for young drivers, may be the key to fewer deaths and injuries.

Tips for Safe Driving • Give driving your full attention.

• Follow the rules of the road and obey speed limits.

• Always wear a seat belt.

• If transporting younger passengers, remember to restrain children under age 12 properly in the back seat, and to place children in age- and height-appropriate safety or booster seats.

• Never get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol.

• Be aware of the side effects of prescription medications you are taking before driving.

• Use your side and rearview mirrors every five to seven seconds.

• Never write, read or send text messages while driving.

• Always have a safety zone: a space to your left or right to drive into during an emergency.

• Your safety zone can also be the cushion of space in front of your vehicle when a tailgater follows too closely.

• Scan the space you are driving in by moving your eyes left and right to get a sense of your surroundings. Use your mirrors frequently.

• Keep your eyes up. Look as far ahead as you can see. Do not focus only on the vehicle in front of you.

• Scan your surroundings.

• Avoid distractions unrelated to driving.

What are the boxes for?

To help collect donations, money for our Shriners Hospitals for Children to help relieve the pressure from the Hospital Days Fund Drive.

Where are the boxes to be?

In any store or business, preferably near a cash register. Within eyesight of customers making it easy for them to put their change in the box.

When are the boxes to be used?

All year round, so our friends can donate small amounts of cash at any time.

Pull Tabs for Shriner’s Hospitals The Ladies of Sar-I Court started in 1992 collecting and donating aluminum pull-tabs to the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund.” As of July 31, 2012, they have collected 85,087 lbs., for a total of $43,519,87 for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on PULL TABS 1. Why not collect the whole can? Collecting complete cans would require a great deal more storage space. You should go ahead and recycle the rest of the can in the normal way, in the dumpster behind Sahib.

2. How many tabs in a pound? 1,267.

3. How many tabs will a gallon milk jug hold? About 5 pounds worth.

4. How does it work and where does the money go? The tabs are delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahib club/unit location) and then taken to the recycling center.

The money netted from recycling goes directly into the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund” at the Tampa Shriners Hospital for Children.

Reporter Deadline Always the First Day of the Month

New Patient Referral Process Approved at Imperial Session Great news! It is now easier than ever to refer a patient to Shriners Hospitals for ChildrenÂŽ! At the 138th Annual Session in July 2012, the attending delegates approved amendments to the Colorado Bylaws 509.2 and 509.3 which simplified the way for patients to access Shriners Hospitals.

Patients/families no longer need to fill out a two-page application form that must be processed before being considered for treatment. While this is a big change for our system and YOU, we want to assure you that our Shriners are more important than ever in finding children that need our help; as well as informing the public about the noble mission of Shriners Hospitals for Children. We need your participation now, more than ever, to reach more patients. This new process makes it easier for our patients and will still allow for engagement with the nobility. Travel and transportation support should not change. Contact your Shrine temple or hospital if you have questions.

This new intake process continues to support your valuable referrals, without the added step of completing a patient application. Instead, simply provide patients/ families with the Shriners Hospitals for Children patient referral card, which may be obtained from your hospital or Shrine temple. In addition, a new Patient Referral Form will be forthcoming in the near future.

However, the referral card is preferred, with the patient/family calling the hospitalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s referral intake line directly. Why? This is the quickest and most convenient way for a patient to get the care they need.

When did this start? In October 2012, Shriners Hospitals simplified the process

for our new patients; allowing immediate scheduling for an appointment if their clinical needs meet the hospitalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s scope of service.

To avoid any confusion to our patients or the community, temple staff are asked to no longer use the application form and remove any reference to a patient application process in temple materials or website.
