Chaplain’s corner

T

he longest day, June 21 is the Summer Solstice, the longest day in the year in the Northern Hemisphere. It’s the time when the last of our northern friends have left the humidity and heat behind and gone home. If we ponder this time, we realize that we can now go out to lunch or dinner without “call ahead” reservations, traffic is a bit lighter but our hearts are a bit sadder because so many of our nobles and brothers will not be in our company for many months. Perhaps there is a deeper meaning to the longest day. Do you remember the longest day in your life? I certainly do. It was the first day, just after my 21st birthday, that I stood in front of a high school history class and realized that I was the teacher; that my student days were ending and that I now held the minds, and to some degree, the futures of almost 250 young men and women in my hands.

You see, history was a required class. You could not graduate from high school in California without a passing grade. I wish that were still true today! Henry James is credited with saying that “alone among all men, a teacher affects eternity”. What you taught each student, or failed to teach them, might well be passed down through many generations.

Big responsibility for such young shoulders to bear! My shoulders were proud to bear that responsibility for nearly 20 years. Perhaps each of you can remember your longest day.

Being a Mason and a Shriner is a lot like standing in front of

that class on that September day in 1967. It’s a big responsibility.

We are living examples of good men and true; men of honor, faith, kindness and good will to all men and women, no matter their race, culture or creed. May each of us act each day as if the world was watching each one of us; because it is! Each man who wears the ring or pin; has a Masonic tag or Shrine emblem on his car is an ambassador for Masonry and the Shrine. He is a living testament to lives well lived in truth, honor and good will. He is an example that brotherhood is not a dream but a reality lived every day in Lodges, in Scottish and York Rite bodies and in the Shrine.

This great fraternity, whose root and trunk is the Blue Lodge from which springs the branches of the attendant bodies of Scottish Rite and York Rite, the nobles of the Mystic Shrine and many other organizations, is a laboratory of brotherhood, democracy, love and charity. This is a laboratory that is on display for the whole world to see; our purposes are clear and transparent. Our methods are noble and true.

Our message is the Brotherhood of all men with faith, hope and charity for all. No message is more sorely needed right now in the second decade of the 21st century. Let’s Rise and Shrine here at Sahib and be a light unto Shrinedom and to the world.

What can we do? If each noble brought in just one new Shriner, we could have 2000 active members again in an amazingly short time. Want to?

Potentate’s notes

Hello nobles, ladies and friends, We’ve reached the half waypoint of my term and it seems like my work is just beginning. I am giving it my best to get our Shrine on top of a very tough financial battle. With the playing of the Queen of Hearts on Wednesday nights our lounge and restaurant are seeing some of our faithful nobles and ladies. I thank all that show up for the fun. With the different menus and buffets on Friday nights, it’s giving patrons a wide range of different choices. I praise the work Bingo and its volunteers are doing.

Now for the business part; our Lotto Raffle is not doing so well this year. With the slumping sale of tickets and lack of club donations to our general fund, we will have to really tighten our belts as the bills, like electric, just keep going up with the heat. I’m asking for help to support our Shrine and our Transportation Fund. Our Shriners Hospitals for Children also is asking for your assistance. In the 1920’s when the first Shrine Hospital was opened, the only patients referred to the hospital were from Shriners. Hardly anyone knew who the Shriners were. To this day, with 22 Shriner Hospitals, having cared for about one million children, our Shriners only refer 14% of our kids! Another problem we have is, although we now take insurance, some families are going to local facilities because of convenience and travel. Therefore, if we do not get needy children into our Shriners Hospital for proper care, the insurance is not helping to keep the doors open. We give money for further research, now we have to refer the children to put this to use.

Membership seems to be on a downhill slide with every fraternal organization that I know. With Florida being heavily populated with a lot of retirees, we have lost a reported 467 Florida Shriners to the Black Camel. This we can’t control. What we can do is to find ways to retain the members we have. My request to all of you is to try to find ways to start involving everyone. I’m doing my best to keep the Shrine going.

Help me fill it!

Off to Imperial session in July. Hope to bring fresh ideas and good news back.

I

t seems the year just began and it is June already.

Summertime is upon us Florida nobles, a time to get regenerated with the hot weather coming. The summer hours for the Sahib’s Administrative office will change as always. The office will close on Friday at noon (12:00 p.m.) and be open Monday through Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Activity will continue during the summer at Sahib as always. The temple will provide the place to be for the nobility and their ladies. Bingo on Tuesday, Queen of Hearts on Wednesday, Hillbilly’s Dinner on Thursday with Motor Corps taking over during the summer, Birthday/Anniversary dance and the lounge/

restaurant to visit. The Camel Herders will be working hard to keep our temple presentable during the summer season and are always looking for nobles to help. By the way, your lady is welcome to lend a hand if she wishes. Refreshments are served after the work and fun.

In July, there will be no Reporter so here is some information to remember. The temple will be closed July 1 -12, the Imperial Session will take place in Minneapolis, Minnesota July 6 -10, Bingo will continue in July on Tuesdays and Sahib will reopen on July 14. . . .continued on page 16

reetings nobles, April showers are history and the May flowers came and are now in bloom in June. The yellow pollen is gone so let’s all be thankful for the great spring weather we had and brace ourselves for the hot weather ahead. The Spring Ceremonial is history and what a great Ceremonial it was.

We now have ten new Shriners and now is the time to start getting novices (candidates) for the Fall Ceremonial. Don’t wait “start early.” Asst. Rabban Carroll Scribner and your Membership committee are working hard for Sahib.

We just got back from FSA and our Shriners did Sahib proud. Motel T’s were great and did a super job on the course, and our Clowns brought back a lot of medals. The Mariners had a great turn out and everyone who attended had a great time. Congrats to

all who were at FSA. Don’t forget next year (2015), Sahib will be the host Shrine. Start your planning early and Past Potentate Charles Levan 33° is the newly elected FSA president for the ensuing year. Be sure to contact him if you can assist in any way, because this is a large undertaking he needs as many as possible to help. Congrats to Past Potentate Charles.

Your elected Divan officers will soon be off to the Imperial Session in Minnesota. This is always an informative event and we’ll have lots of information when we get back.

O

nce again into the breach! What have I been into this last month? Much of the usual—Bingo, King Pins, hosting, Membership, lost in the Golf Tournament, visited Shrine Clubs etc. all the usual.

I was honored by the Grand Master of Masons of Maine with the award of a beautiful medal for 50years service to the craft and his 50-year pin. The presenter, Grand Masters Representative in Florida, DDGM (retired) Jack Lagerquist drove from the east coast to make the presentation in my living room; I was of course, deeply grateful for the honor.

Much of my time is being taken up FEZtival activities, meetings and club/unit meetings. So far, we have a very active decorating committee, a great publicity group, a director of our Craft Show with several sites all locked up, a volunteer to set up and supervise our Santa picture site group and the several Santa’s to go with it, and a group of elves to assist at the Santa/picture site. I have had many people volunteer to help when we open in November, i.e. set up, tickets, food and security.

We need a club or group to take care of the food concession, very basic hot dogs, colas, chips, ice cream, nachos. I know we have people with experience in this area and I’ll be talking with them.

Some materials essential to the set up have been manufactured. We have a need for some construction help building very basic 8’ fencing sections to arrange the trees and the floor; no great skill necessary, basic hand tools and a little time. We have funding from the Potentate so we are not asking volunteers to pay out of pocket. What needs to be done can be completed in a few hours.

We will have musical groups from our community present Christmas programs each day, a.m. and p.m.

So far, we have four groups who want to be part of our celebration. Our Sahib Band members will open our series as we welcome the Chamber of Commerce, local community leaders and clergy.

So far, we have been promised a number of trees from various sources. As we progress, I will keep you . . .continued on page 16

Motor Corps Shrine Club

une issue of The Reporter, with no publication in July, your humble reporter gets a breather from preparing this monthly column. However, it also means this month’s column from the Motor Corps will include items of interest for the next two months plus some news on recent Motor Corps activities.

Back on Sunday, April 13, the Motor Corps held its spring picnic at Wally and Connie Lacey’s home. We had a great turnout and the food was super. Wally and Connie really did a great job and we owe them a debt of thanks. Likely by the time you read this column, they will be up north for the summer.

The Motor Corps participated in the DeSoto Historical Children’s Parade in Palmetto on Friday, April 18. In spite of overcast skies, we had seven Harley motorcycles that participated in the parade. Thanks to Scott Steelman (Gray Fox), Wally Lacey (Red Dog), Ken Shipley (Doc), Dave Bell (Jetfoot), Steve Helin (Varmint), Bryan Pullman (Shortcut) and me (Gman) for helping to make the parade a success.

Several of our members headed to Leesburg for the 18th Annual Leesburg Bikefest. Described as “the world’s largest 3-day motorcycle and music event,” it was held from April 25-27. Nearly 200,000 biker enthusiasts were expected to attend.

Several of our members attended the Florida Shrine Association meeting in Melbourne from April 30 - May 3. Several Shrine temples participated in the motorcycle completion events. Next year FSA will be held in Sarasota.

The Shrine Spring Ceremonial gave us a chance to recruit new members at the Wednesday night social on May 7. Thanks to Dave Bell (Jetfoot) for bringing his white Shrine bike to the event and the members who participated in the event. In addition, of course, the parade on Saturday, May 10 provided our members a chance to show their stuff.

A number of our members are headed north for our annual spring trip to Murphy, North Carolina on June 13-15. We’ll have more to report on this trip in the August issue of The Reporter.

Bikerbilly Thursday night dinners will be available starting July 17. The Motor Corps will be taking over for the Hillbilly Shrine Club during the Thursday night dinners. Instead of the Hillbilly buffet, the Motor Corps will be serving up their famous burgers, onion rings, and maybe even some battered mushrooms, plus a number of other items on our menu.

We have eight Motor Corps members and their ladies with birthdays in June and July. We also have two members and their ladies with anniversaries during those same months. June birthdays include: Suzy Lucas (Cream Cheese) and Jeff Young (Snowman) on the 19th, Ken Shipley (Doc) on the 20th. July birthdays include Sue Woodman (Puppy) on the 4th, John Hubbard (Hotrod) on the 7th, Kathy Galanti on the 14th, Wally Lacey (Red Dog) on the 28th, and Paul Woodman (Wood Dog) on the 30th.

June anniversary is: Wally Lacey (Red Dog) and Lady Connie (Cooter) on the 30th. July anniversary is: Tony Galanti (G) and Kathy on the 31st.

P

erhaps the most outstanding and pleasant occurrence at the end of March for your Scribe was a surprise, big surprise, visit from New Jersey by his daughter Kathleen and granddaughter Megan for a birthday celebration, arranged by my Lady Kitty.

Didn’t know she could be so sly. While it is an age when birthdays are best ignored; it was a super day.

We were still seeing a considerable number of club nobles at our final March and April breakfasts so not all of our “sno-nobles” had yet deserted us, but they will.

Our April 6 mixer (see photos on facing page) at the Plantation Golf & Country Club; Venice was, perhaps, the most enjoyable of any of our previous mixers (my opinion). Ambiance superb, food likewise, service also. Hope we return there with more of our members attending; this occasion thanks to Bob (mixerman) Somerville. Present at the mixer were Joe and Susan Jandes, daughter and son-in-law of Club President Lowell McCarty and Lady Elizabeth (photo on facing page). Seated across from yours truly was Scribe Emeritus, my mentor, encourager and speaker of many kind words, Noble Jock Robertson (see photo on facing page) and Lady Kerry. Next mixer scheduled for June 8 at the Olive Garden.

April 15 was the anniversary of the tragic sinking of the RMS Titanic on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. It has particular significance for the Brophy family because Lady Kitty’s grandmother Mrs. John T. Doling (Kitty’s maiden name) was traveling on the ship with her sister-inlaw Elsie to visit her mother in New York. Both ladies survived and returned to Southampton on the Philadelphia. Did you know there were two sister ships of the Titanic built earlier? The RMS Olympic and RMS Britannic.

Also on tap for April 19 was a North Port Masonic Lodge No. 406 picnic at Dallas White Park in North Port. From reports, it was very well attended. Remember, the Lodge meets the second and fourth Wednesdays at Farley Funeral Home, North Port.

Noble J.D. Copher reported $1146 realized from assisting at the Sarasota County Fair; very nice work J.D. and volunteer nobles!

At the April 15 breakfast Assistant Rabban Carroll Scribner presented his “dog and pony” show for the FEZtival of Trees upcoming in November. North

“Bits and Pieces” A St. Louis man trying to escape pursuing police officers ran into a building. The suspect had been pulled over for an alleged traffic violation but fled on foot. Running at full sprint the man did not notice the sign on the building: “Police Headquarters.” One of the arresting officers said “He should have cut out the middle man and gone straight to jail.”

“Quotable Notable” As of this writing no one as yet has identified the April “QN” who said “Beautiful young people are accidents of nature, but beautiful old people are works of art” as former political spouse Eleanor Roosevelt. For June: What well-known writer said “There are three rules for writing a novel. Your Potentate Rocky Kearney and Divan are always open to fresh and positive suggestions to involve more of the nobility. At times, we seem to forget there are nobles of all ages in our temple. So you young nobles get involved. Let a Divan member have your suggestions, your idea is as important as any noble at Sahib. The collective thoughts of the older and younger nobles together can create positive ideas for new activities. It is your temple, give up those ideas and get involved in making it happen and let’s have fun, you will have support!

I continue to learn and appreciate our diverse membership. We have nobility from around the United States as members and visitors. Crossover Devices help Owen thrive

W

hen he was 2 years old, Owen Mahan was severely scalded. The burn injuries extended over 98 percent of his body. After a week at Kansas Regional Hospital, Owen was transferred to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Cincinnati, one of four locations within our health care system that provides expert care for pediatric burn injuries. He remained in the hospital for nearly eight months, where he was closely monitored and on a ventilator.

“Owen is truly a blessing and miracle to our family,” said Susan Mahan, Owen’s adopted mother. “Before he became a patient at Shriners Hospitals for Children, Owen was given a zero percent chance of survival.”

After countless sessions of physical, occupational and speech therapies, as well as several surgeries, 6-year-old Owen is now doing far better than expected.

“His excitement and energy for life is truly remarkable,” said Mahan.

Due to the severity of his burn injuries, the front portions of Owen’s feet needed to be amputated. In February 2013, Shriners Hospitals for Children —

St. Louis assisted in Owen’s recovery by creating customized “crossovers,” devices that are half orthotic and half prosthetic to help him walk. Now, with the new crossovers, he has the ability to run and sit “crisscross applesauce,” like his classmates.

“We are incredibly thankful for Shriners Hospitals for Children and for the Shriners themselves,” said Mahan.

“Owen now has the opportunity to live a high-quality life, and for that, we are forever grateful.”

SHRINE UNIT NEWS Band

I

t has been a couple of years since I last wrote a Reporter article for the Sahib Band. Much has happened since then. The attrition of membership in the Shrine is only surpassed by the attrition of Shriner musicians. As I write this, I am the only remaining Charter member of the Sahib Band still active in the unit. Lloyd Eggers, a wonderful noble and fine trumpet player, is currently in a nursing home. As far as I know, he is the only Charter member still alive, aside from me.

In spite of this sad reality, and the difficulty of recruiting a few more nobles and ringers, our Director, Past Potentate Jarrett Miller, works diligently to keep the unit going and able to perform for the various functions to which we are committed. He selects the music, makes up all the folders for the

various instruments, sets up the music stands and the folders of music, and waits patiently each Tuesday to see who will show up to rehearse and perform.

His commitment to the Band, but more importantly, to Sahib Shriners, is beyond what anyone might expect. I would hope that some day soon he will get the special recognition from Sahib that he surely deserves for his devotion to Shrinedom in general and to his unit in particular.

Currently we are reading the music that will be performed during next season, and we planned to give musical support to the Spring Ceremonial. I can only hope that the other performing units are blessed with the same dedicated leadership we enjoy in the Sahib Band.

Clown Corner

he clowns have been very busy with their preparation and participation for the Florida Clown Association Convention held in Melbourne, Florida on May 2 and 3. Meetings were held on Friday and competition and the awards banquet was held on Saturday. Our six clowns were judged very well in the competition with a 1st Place in makeup and costume for Sparky Power (whiteface), Sliver Taylor (auguste)

and Ding-a-ling Bell (seniors). Corny Cobb took a 2nd Place in auguste and SueFlay Storch was third in character. Sparky Power took first in paradeability.

Sparky Power and Sliver Taylor took a third in the two-man skits. However, the clowns were very disappointed when they placed third in their unit skit.

Over all, the clowns were very pleased with the convention’s fellowship, closing banquet and the staff

preparation. During the business meeting, Sparky Power was elected 3rd vice-president for the Florida Shrine Clown Association.

The Clowns were represented at the new candidates “meet and greet” on May 7 by Ding-a-ling, Sparky and Sue Flay as we gave the story why you become a Clown and enjoy entertaining kids of all ages. Of course, we were well represented at the ‘parade of units’ on Saturday morning with our calliope and walk-arounds. We wish each of our new Shriners a happy and enjoyable experience at our Sahib temple and invite all to our regular Monday night meetings at 7:30 p.m.

The Clown Unit sends a big ‘thank you’ to all of the nobles and their ladies that were able to participate in the Clowns “Hawaiian” Birthday Anniversary Dinner Dance. Of course, the Clowns could not have prepared the evening without the help of our ladies and a very special ‘thank you’ must be given to our widow ladies that helped to plan and prepare our decorations for the evening. The Clowns are so fortunate to have these ladies on our team!

Now it is time for the Clowns to get back to work on their planning of their skits for our Shrine Circus in October. Until we meet again – “Remember don’t break a leg!”

Mariners

obles, if you are not a member of Sahib Shrine Mariners, you need to join our respected and loved unit. You do not need to own a boat, but be willing to ride in our Parade Boat. We have lost a number of our comrades due to the black camel.

Therefore, we are looking for a few candidates to join our unit. It has the great respect of our temple and you would enjoy being a part of the Mariners, where you can succeed to further grow in Masonry, and become maybe our next leader.

The last two months have been very busy, Spring Ceremonial, Boat-ins at the Jennings Residence and at several restaurants, unit picnic, and we will be hosting the June Birthday and Anniversary Dinner Dance at Sahib. If you are looking for a very fun-filled unit, come and join the Mariners.

Remember the meetings are on the second Wednesday of the month, Bridge meeting at 5:00 p.m., dinner in the Sahara Room at 6:00, and the meeting begins at 7:00. Please come and see.

Oriental Band

A

s this is a new year, the Oriental Band is making some changes. Sig Paul is now the temple’s 1st Ceremonial Master and needs to shed this article writing and I have volunteered to take it up for the balance of this year. As there is not much happening around Bradenton Sarasota at this time of year, and we as a band are not going to the Imperial, I will continue writing about the members of the band till we get back in the fall.

This bio is for Hans Wessels, who this year will not be our front man and will be playing a hand-held Congo drum. He was born in 1929 in northern Germany. At the end of WWII as a 15-year old, he was drafted into the German army. After the war, he started working for the railroad, and married his wife Trudy (60 years this year) in 1954. Not seeing much of a future, they immigrated to America in 1956. They

took over a luncheonette and variety shop within the year. After operating that business for six years, they moved to Connecticut. Soon after that, they became owners of a wine shop and later still a hallmark card and gift shop. With their two daughters, they visited Florida in the winter recesses. Being avid boaters and skiers, they moved to Florida in 1976. They bought another hallmark shop and retired in 1991, and Hans started volunteer work for Manatee Memorial Hospital. This work lasted 16 years. Hans has been a member of West Point Lodge No. 877 for 58 years and joined the Scottish Rites. Then joined Sahib Shriners in 1999 and of course the Oriental Band where he has learned to play the small drum and was our front man for years. Hans is also very active in the “Q.”

lorida Shrine Association held their annual convention April 30 through May 4 on the beach in Cocoa. The outgoing president Ill. Sir Bob Headly and his temple, Azan, hosted a great and well thought out time for everyone.

At the business meeting a discussion continued about holding the FSA annual meeting in one regular location, not as we currently do by moving each year.

A committee was formed to report at mid-winter 2014 as to their findings and/or recommendations. The

2016 and 2017 conventions are planning to use the same facility as trial run to see if it benefits the nobility and their families. Also at the business meeting was the election of officers and Sahib Past Potentate Charles Levan, 33° was elected as the 2014-2015 president of FSA. I was elected as 1st vice-president.

Mahi Past Potentate Stephen “Rosey” Rosean was elected as 2nd vice-president and Egypt Past Potentate Richard Leger was elected as secretary/treasurer. The voting and nominations for the office of 3rd vice-president was tabled until mid-winter. The reason is Hadji Shriners rejoined FSA and we need to determine if they have a nominee at this time.

The FSA Convention in Cocoa is always a wellattended event and this was no exception. The compe-

tition was held at the Port of Canaveral cruise parking lot. It was discovered slick placement and some of our well-known nobles’ “Harleys” don’t mix. I will allow the units to address the wins (as well as the monkey and the donkey) they brought home. As Shriners we did eat and eat well I found no bad restaurants, no poor hospitality rooms, and no mediocre desserts! All was well.

The 2015 Convention will be held in Sarasota, my hometown, and full details will be announced at midwinter. Now there we truly can eat and eat well.

reetings nobles, a great time was had by all at our Spring Ceremonial. The cocktail party provided an opportunity for the clubs and units to meet all the new candidates and their ladies. All of the nobles, Divan and Lodge officers worked very hard for the Ceremonial.

The Spring Picnic was a big success. The girls made $4,000 for Lady Wendy’s Project. A big thank you to the Cabiri for dishing ice cream, the ladies that served food and of course our “ladies” that competed in the Mz. Sahib contest. I, Mz. Delby Doo was crowned Mz. Sahib, what a crown to be proud of. A good job to all that participated.

Summer is just around the corner and a slower time for the Shrine. Don’t forget our Birthday and Anniversary Dance that is held on the second Tuesday of every month, the Hillbillies Buffet every Thursday and the King Pins Pancake Breakfast on the first Sunday of every month. Your participation is very beneficial to both you and the clubs and units. It is important that we stay involved.

Shriners International Awareness Day Calling all Shriners on June 6!

Shriners International has declared June 6 Shriners International Awareness Day.

n June 6, 1876, the Imperial Council, the governing body of the Shriners fraternity, was founded.

To celebrate and recognize this important milestone in our history, Shriners International has declared June 6 Shriners International Awareness Day. On this day, nobles across the globe are encouraged to celebrate their great fraternity and spread awareness in their communities.

Shriners International urges all nobles to display their pride in the fraternity by wearing a fez (when appropriate), hat, shirt, lapel pin, or other item with the fraternity’s logo. In addition to sporting Shriner apparel, Shriners International encourages all temples and Shrine clubs to organize special events at their temples and in their communities to honor the achievements of the organization. These events will also support membership efforts. After all, who wouldn’t want to be part of the “world’s greatest fraternity?”

“Shriners International Awareness Day is intended to reenergize our nobles, spark interest in potential members, and remind ourselves of all the wonderful achievements this great organization has accomplished since 1876,” said Al Madsen, Imperial Potentate. “It is also a way to support our efforts to increase membership, and allow potential members to see first-hand the ‘men behind the fez’.”

This international day of recognition is an annual opportunity for Shriners to share information about the fraternity, its history and the benefits of becoming part of an organization dedicated to fun, fellowship and philanthropy. Here are a few ways both nobles and temples can get involved:

Shriners International: A Fraternity Based on Fun and Philanthropy Shriners International, a fraternity based on fun, fellowship and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief and truth, founded Shriners Hospitals for Children as its official philanthropy in 1922. The organization, which began as one hospital, is now a world-renowned health care system with 22 facilities in three countries. The fraternity, which has nearly 200 chapters in seven countries and thousands of clubs around the world, continues to operate and support this unique health care system.

The basic organizational unit of the fraternity is the temple, which is governed by an elected board, known as the Divan. The Divan is headed by a Potentate, who is the presiding officer of the temple.

All temples are subordinate to Shriners International Headquarters. The Imperial Divan, the fraternity’s governing board, is headed by the Imperial Potentate and consists of 13 elected officers. A new officer is elected to the Imperial Divan each year. Every officer, except the Imperial Treasurer and Imperial Recorder, moves up the “line” each year, eventually becoming Imperial Potentate. The Imperial Treasurer and Imperial Recorder may be re-elected.

Within each temple, there are also clubs and units for members with various interests and hobbies.

The fraternity may be best known for its colorful parades, circuses and clowns – but there are also many other opportunities for members. From leadership development and public speaking to networking and special interests – there truly is something for everyone.

Shriners International’s best-known symbol is the distinctive red fez worn by Shriners at official functions. The fez derives its name from the city of Fez, Morocco, and was chosen as part of Shriners’ Near East theme. This theme was developed in the 1870s by Walter M. Fleming, a prominent New York physician, and William J. “Billy” Florence, a popular actor.

Legend has it that Florence discovered the Near East theme when he attended a party in Marseilles, France, hosted by an Arabian diplomat. When he returned to the U.S., he explained the theme to Fleming, and the two men began laying the foundation for the Shriners fraternity, which was officially named the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, and informally known as Shriners of North America. Today the fraternity’s

name is Shriners International. The first Shriners temple, Mecca Shriners, was organized in New York City in 1872.

As membership in the Shriners fraternity grew in the early 1900s, so did the call for establishing an official charity. In 1919, the Imperial Potentateelect proposed establishing a hospital to provide free care for children with orthopaedic problems. A committee explored the idea and concluded there should not be just one hospital; there should be a health care system throughout North America that provides pediatric orthopaedic medical care regardless of the families’ ability to pay. The first hospital opened in Shreveport, La., in 1922.

Today, there are 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children® facilities, 20 of which specialize in pediatric orthopaedics, providing medical and rehabilitative services to children with congenital deformities and conditions, problems resulting from orthopaedic injuries, and diseases of the neuromusculoskeletal system.

Shriners Hospitals for Children entered the field of burn care in the 1960s after recognizing a lack of medical expertise in the field. The health care system provides critical, surgical and rehabilitive care for children with varying degrees of pediatric burn injuries.

In the early 1980s, Shriners Hospitals for Children opened the nation’s first spinal cord injury rehabilitation centers specifically designed for kids. There, patients receive long-term rehabilitation and intensive physical, occupational and recreation therapies.

Cleft lip and palate is the health care system’s newest official service line. This program provides surgeries, orthodontic work, audiological, speech and psychological therapies for children with this condition.

Shriners Hospitals for Children relies on the generous donations of Shriners and the general public to continue its mission of improving the lives of children.

here is nothing like a good story. Stories entertain and relax us or they challenge us. They can be intense mysteries or imaginative fantasies. Sometimes stories are a comedy, sometimes a tragedy. However, they are always, in some way, instructive. We learn as much from reading Aesop’s fables as from War and Peace. A well-told story beats a textbook every time.

Freemasonry tells a good story, one about personal growth, self-reflection; about man’s pursuit of his proper role in the world and his relationship with other people and with Deity.

Think about it. Every degree is a story. Each involves a traveler on a quest, a journey. He is searching for something or some place. Sometimes the degree ends with a destination having been reached, like when we ascend to the highest step of the winding stairs. Sometimes it concludes when a new, enlightening thought has entered our mind. Sometimes a degree ends with some accomplishment or achievement, sometimes with a tragic event.

Nevertheless, Freemasonry’s stories always end with a lesson, some instruction. That instruction is often a question, such as, what do I do now? Now that I have completed a degree, how should my life change, how should my conduct be modified? (Sometimes the question is simply: what just happened to me. A lifetime can be spent trying to figure out “what just happened to me” in the second section of the Master Mason degree.)

The Scottish Rite continues the story (stories) begun in the Symbolic Lodge. For example, the Eighth

Degree, Intendant of the Building, tells a story about the selection of the successor(s) to Hiram Abiff. We were left hanging at the end for Master Mason. The Hiramic Legend doesn’t tell us anything about the Temple’s completion or who assumed leadership after our Grand Master was gone.

The Eighth Degree continues the story started in the Third Degree and in doing so offers some valuable things to think about. It includes ideas about succession planning, leadership, teaching, the importance of exemplary conduct, cultural continuity and even some suggestions about the proper relationship of labor and management. The Eighth Degree is another good Masonic story replete with concepts and lessons to contemplate.

The degrees of the Symbolic Lodge tell a good story. Those of the Scottish Rite make for good sequels.

The Scottish Rite meets in Tampa on the second Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m., preceded by a 5:45 p.m. dinner.

June 9 is our annual Flag Day celebration. It is open to the public and boasts a good meal (free) and a patriotic program.

Not Your Father’s Freemasonry

y Grandmother was one-year old when, in 1897, Bro. Ransom E. Olds began production of a new automobile which would aptly come to be known as the Oldsmobile. Over its 107-year history of some 35 million cars, the Olds would be forever etched in the history of American culture and society.

As a teenager, I remember the Oldsmobile Cutlass, and in those days it was one of the cool cars. But by the ‘70s and ‘80s, Oldsmobile was facing challenges from its GM cousins, Pontiac and Buick, as well as foreign imports.

In response, Olds instituted a redesign, facelift, and other makeovers heralded with a market campaign, “This is not your father’s Oldsmobile.” Many of you will remember. Although ultimately unsuccessful to save the Olds product line, it is significant to me, however, that the company was confronted with the signal fact that what catches the eye or motivates yesterday will not always suffice for today. And most certainly not tomorrow.

I wonder if there might be a lesson for us as Scottish Rite Freemasons here. I joined the Scottish Rite in 1970, and our membership stood well north of half a million members. Today, we are below two hundred thousand, but the times were different then and so was the organization.

It was common in my Valley and elsewhere for semiannual reunion classes of candidates to number in the hundreds. I was one of a large group, as was my father in his class at the New Orleans Consistory in 1947. Things were really unchanged from his generation to mine. Just sit and watch and try to survive four days of continuous degrees. If you made it through, you were entitled to wear the insignia of and claim the distinction of being a “Thirty-second Degree Mason” under the mistaken notion that you had achieved a higher rank or position beyond your Lodge. Embarrassing but true.

If you really wanted to reach the pinnacle, you joined the Shrine—in those days a somewhat daunt-

SAHIB REPORTER ing experience across the “hot sands:’ Again, the survivors were honored with the fez and the crescent lapel pin indicative that you had “done it all.” In fact, Shrine membership was predicated upon one having attained the terminal degrees in the York or Scottish Rite. Membership in the Rites was never a problem.

Or so it seemed at the time. And guess what? It didn’t really matter if I returned or was engaged in the Scottish Rite, for another group of new members would be along soon. To be sure, my participation was welcomed but not seen as vital. It just wasn’t a concern.

As with Oldsmobile, though, the times have changed. Potential Shriners no longer must affiliate with the York or Scottish Rite to join; Craft Masonry, while rebuilding, still has many miles to travel before being stable in its membership; and the Scottish and York Rites continue to struggle to attract and retain qualified Masons to their ranks. Younger, “upwardly mobile” men with families and resulting obligations as to time and finance will no longer join or remain with an organization that does not meet some need in their lives. And they definitely will not affiliate with us content to be sideliners with no role to fill or challenge to meet. Those days are gone.

Thus, it is imperative that we treat each new Thirty-second Degree Mason in our Valley not as a member whose name is written in stone, but as a good man who is trying us out—giving us a chance, so to speak. Will he like what he sees? Will he find a welcoming group of Masons eager to involve him in the Valley, hear his opinions, and use his talents? Will he be given a chance to exercise real leadership and to be proud to bring his friends and acquaintances? Will he look forward to the next Reunion knowing that we are relying on him to help out?

Will we remember not to patronize him with worn out slogans such as “you only get out of it what you put into it” but ask him to do a specific job and praise him for his performance?

This isn’t rocket science, folks. It’s easy. It’s the right thing to do, and what we promised to do as Masons. If we don’t reach out and engage our members, they will be gone and another chair will be empty at the next meeting. And that vacant spot in the parking? Plenty of room for an Oldsmobile.

reetings from Omaha, Nebraska; yes, this year our Supreme Session is in Nebraska! Last year we voted on having our Supreme Sessions earlier in the month of June due to so many activities scheduled at that time of the month. It will give our new Supreme Queen a chance to take in the excitement of her installation before she begins her visitations to the temples throughout the country and going to all 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children.

For those of you who have not experienced a Supreme Session you are missing a wonderful time.

It is a time to get to know your counterparts, meet new people and have a lot of fun. Yes, there is business to be taken care of and voting on new amendments, but the time sure flies. My husband and I have done a number of conventions and going to Supreme, he has enjoyed immensely. The camaraderie of the men, the gathering in the hospitality room, the meals and the tours and yes seeing the other temple units perform are some of the things he looks forward to doing. I’ve even found him in the market place doing some shopping for Masonic/Shrine items.

This year we have a number of amendments to vote on and I will be giving you the results in our newsletter.

It has been a wonderful year for our Supreme Queen Margaret Ann Risk. If you did not get a chance to meet her this year at the Sahib Shrine luncheon or at the East/West game, you missed meeting a dynamite person. She has been a wonderful ambassador for the Daughters of the Nile and all the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Each Supreme Queen has contributed something special to our order and has brought it to new levels.

We look forward to seeing Supreme Queen-elect, Marsha Sowers installed. She will be visiting our temple January 14, 2015. If you think you are seeing double, you are. She is an identical twin and her sister will be traveling with her. Mark your calendars to attend our banquet for her.

Remember ladies to wear your Nile jewelry, tee shirts and always carry a proposal in your pocket or purse. The next new member is just around the corner. Wouldn’t you like to leave a great legacy by bringing in a new member? In Nile Love.

Children up to the age of 18 with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate are eligible for admission and receive all care in a family-centered environment regardless of the child's ability to pay.

Sar-I Court No. 79 - LOSNA

ay was a busy month for Sar-I Court; our ladies volunteered for many activities for the Shriners Hospitals for Children and for our Sahib Shrine.

On May 3 we hosted a trip to Booker High to see “Annie Get Your Gun.” The students at the Performing Arts Program gave their usual terrific performance.

May 5 the Court welcomed four new members at our Ceremonial; Betsy Morris, Suzanne O’Neil, Marjorie Rost and Doris Vail are the first members of our Graceful Swans class.

LOS Grand Counsel was held in Wichita, Kansas May 10 through May 17. It was a great opportunity to

meet old friends and make new ones. We compared notes on how each Court raises money for the Shriners’ Hospitals, how our Courts function and how we can improve our efforts.

Our “Mushroom” (Second Ceremonial Lady) Kay Neary, learned the symbols her Grand Officer has chosen for their class. She was showered with gifts of these symbols by her Sar-I sisters.

Although we will be “dark” until September, we will be busy volunteering, sewing, and promoting support for the Shriners Hospitals.

I

have been thinking about what it really means to me to be a Shriner. Why did I join the Shrine? What am I doing to help make Shrine grow? What else can I do?

I think about it as a three-legged stool.

First leg is related to helping my individual Shrine temple or the Shrine temple that I am an associate member of or the one I am involved with as a snowbird.

Second leg is related to supporting getting our kids to the Shriners Hospitals for Children (Transportation Fund.)

Third leg is related to the actual financial support of the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

These are all very important areas that we all need to think about and take action.

Let’s look at the first leg: Do I pay my dues? Do I participate in some or many of the activities as a volunteer or participant in such activities as Bingo, Pancake Breakfast, Birthday/Anniversary Dance, Thursday Luncheons, Hillbilly Dinner, etc. that the temple offers? Am I an active member of some of the units and clubs offered by the temple? Do I participate in the fundraisers such as Bingo, Bar Bingo, Pancake Breakfast, 50/50, Picnics, etc.? Do I belong to one or more Shrine Clubs? Have I approached any Masons and invited them to become Shriners? Have I sponsored one or more Masons into the Shrine?

Have I personally sponsored someone into Masonry, so he also may become a Shriner?

Let’s look at the second leg: Am I on the volunteer staff to drive patients to the Shriners Hospitals for Children? Am I a volunteer at the Shriners Hospitals for Children to give tours and help there as needed? Do I participate in Hospital Days helping raise money for the Transportation Fund?

Let’s look at the third leg: Do I give money directly to the Shriners Hospitals for Children? Have I included the Shriners Hospital for Children in my will? Have I become involved personally in the Sahib Plaque Program? Have I approached any businesses to become involved with Sahib’s Plaque Program?

I do hope you are involved in some way with all three legs as they are all vital to the Shrine’s prosperity and the future of both our temples and our hospitals.

If you know of a child that we can possibly help please let the office or me know and we will see what we can do to get the ball rolling. We do not turn away a child, if there is a reasonable possibility they can benefit from the specialized services available. The areas we work with include orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries as well as cleft lip and palate. I hope you also are aware that “regardless of the patients or families ability to pay” they will be treated if it is something we cover.

I am looking for new participants for 2014 in Sahib’s Plaque Program; there are two ways to become involved. The first one is placing a plaque in various businesses. You can help by either contacting business owners yourself, help them complete the application form and pick up their donation (minimum $100 per year for five years) Then remind them again of how much this will mean to the children we are helping and their families with those donations. Please contact me at (941) 776-0937 if you need assistance. Suggest that the plaque be placed is a conspicuous place in their establishment for all to see that they support “The Shriners Hospitals for Children.”

The second way is by having a plaque in your name, your spouse’s name, you and your spouse together, a companion, a very special person in your life, can be in honor or in memory of someone you love, loved, or thought of very highly.

Whether you obtain a business to purchase a plaque or you start one yourself, get started today by sending a check made out to: “Shriners Hospitals for Children - Tampa” for $100 or more. The program is set for a five-year time span with spaces on the plaque for engraved yearly tabs to be added each year you participate. You can adjust the amount you give each year, with a minimum tax-deductible donation of $100 (up to maximum permitted by law). I hope that you will want to do this for the full five consecutive years, or longer, but, if necessary, you can skip a year.

What are the boxes for?

To help collect donations, money for our Shriners Hospitals for Children to help relieve the pressure from the Hospital Days Fund Drive.

Where are the boxes to be?

In any store or business, preferably near a cash register. Within eyesight of customers making it easy for them to put their change in the box.

When are the boxes to be used?

All year round, so our friends can donate small amounts of cash at any time.

Pull Tabs for Shriner’s Hospitals The Ladies of Sar-I Court started in 1992 collecting and donating aluminum pull-tabs to the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund.” As of March 31, 2014, they have collected 100,031 lbs., for a total of $52,328.82 for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on PULL TABS 1. Why not collect the whole can? Collecting complete cans would require a great deal more storage space. You should go ahead and recycle the rest of the can in the normal way, in the dumpster behind Sahib.

2. How many tabs in a pound? 1,267.

3. How many tabs will a gallon milk jug hold? About 5 pounds worth.

4. How does it work and where does the money go? The tabs are delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahib club/ unit location) and then taken to the recycling center. The money netted from recycling goes directly into the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund” at the Tampa Shriners Hospital for Children.
