The Essence of Being

Elemental refers to the importance of going back to the core of who we are as well as the importance of the five elements in harmonizing our body with nature. It forces us to look inwards, be introspective and heighten our awareness or consciousness.

A Growing Demand

In today’s world where it is easy to get caught up in daily work and never-ending stimuli, there is an increasing need for people to get back in touch with themselves by shutting out the clutter of daily life and transcending the external chaos to reach an inner peace and comfort.

Tea house

Located in the corner, the tea house evokes a sense of serenity and deep reflection. Traditional Chinese tea drinking is a highly sophisticated art where both the tea-maker and teadrinker are engaged in a relaxing process of tasting and conversation.

Pharmacy

Directly opposite the breakfast area, the Eu Yan Sang store conveys its importance as a supplement to healthy diet. It sells herbs and packaged medicine and guests can consult traditional Chinese medicine pharmacists and pick up their prescriptions here.

Massage Room

The dark and confined massage room imitates the entrance vestibule in its attempt to create a more introspective environment, encouraging guests to feel a reconnection to their body and qi. Here, guests come full circle in their experience of the space and concept.

In order to improve circulation, visibility and traffic to the restaurant, a new side door is opened to the left side of the bar, leading directly into an upbeat lounge area filled with sofas and coffee tables. The new program takes into consideration the number of diners during each meal period of the day, and the new circulation flow created by the two entrances/exits to the restaurant. The buffet area also transforms from a breakfast buffet into a large, communal dining table at night.

3 IN CONVERSATION: ART & DESIGN spring 2018 // senior capstone Project location: Cincinnati, OH The senior capstone is a self-directed design project that spans two semesters: a research semester and a design semester. As a design major with a background in fine art and art history, I constantly questioned the intersections between art and design. Focusing on the typologies of art galleries and design fairs allowed me to explore these curious intersections, and I carried out site analysis, user analysis, and literature research to create a concept-driven and immersive environment that challenges the visitors’ perceptions about art and design.

The chosen site is located in a highly accessible, up-and-coming neighborhood called Overthe-Rhine, near downtown Cincinnati. The area provides access to various amenities like cafes, restaurants, outdoor parks, independent art galleries as well as plenty of parking lots.

Project Concept The relationship between art and design is more often a contentious than straightforward one. On one hand, designers like Charles Ray Eames think that “[good] design may be judged as art”; on the other, some critics think that art “must not be good design”. There is yet another view that “Art and design exist in a continuum of possibilities”. Thus, In Conversation is an art/design exhibition that provides a provocative and educational environment for visitors to explore the relationship between the two disciplines and that is mounted within a hypothetical Museum of Art and Design located in Over-the-Rhine, Cincinnati.

Programs + Circulation

Step 1: Existing building

The solid/void of the existing structure is reduced to a simple geometric volume.

Step 2: Defining programs

Education is placed on the ground floor to provide a basis for what is to come in the exhibitions on the upper levels.

Step 3: Extending education

An atrium is created at the back of the building to faciliate learning on every level of the exhibition.

Step 4: Designing circulation

Circulation is placed within the education program zone to increase exposure to and symbolize process of learning and gaining insights.

Collages exploring the intersections of art and design

Programming and Design 1

Entrance An appropriated Minimalist piece greets visitors at the entrance. This striking adaptation heightens their awareness of such instances where art transforms into design or the other way around to prepares them for what is to come.

2

Cafe In the cafe, food items for sale are displayed on white pedestals in an attempt to render them visually as art objects. Such unexpected placements in the social space of a cafe sparks conversations about art and design.

3

Atrium A social space where artists and designers are invited to come and speak about their work and its relationship to art or design. Insights from this space can permeate the entire building in the form of sound or memory, acting as a constant reference for visitors in the exhibition areas.

4

Video screenings Video screenings of interviews with artists and designers inform visitors’ experience by placing what they are seeing in context.

5

Exhibitions Exhibitions on the two levels correspond with each other, recalling the experience of seeing the same object in “opposite” settings (art gallery versus design fair), encouraging active comparison between object as art versus object and design.
