Dear Sahalee Members,
I am thrilled to share some exciting news within our community. First, a hearty congratulations to Kim Shek on her election as Sahalee Board President for 2025. Kim’s dedication and passion for competitive golf and Sahalee have always been evident, and we look forward to her leadership guiding us through the year ahead.
Regarding our search for a new General Manager, we appreciate everyone’s patience and support throughout this process. GM Search Committee Chair Ben Minyard, the Search Committee, and PGA ExecuSearch are diligently working to find the right candidate who will uphold the values and vision of Sahalee. During this time of transition, Kim Shek, the Board, and I are working closely to support the Sahalee leadership team to ensure that operations continue to be efficient and effective while maintaining continuity in the membership experience. As we make progress in identifying the next GM, Ben will be sharing updates with the membership.
I would like to recognize some recent changes in our staff. Over the past few months, we've welcomed new faces and bid farewell to a few long-time members of our Sahalee family. Each one has contributed immensely to making Sahalee the special place it is. Change is never easy, particularly with long-time staff who are so essential in making an outstanding membership experience. Let's show our support and extend a warm welcome to those who have recently joined us and a fond farewell to those that are departing.
I would also like to take this opportunity to recognize the great work that Nominating Committee Chair Shane McTaggart and the Nominating Committee did in evaluating and putting forward a slate of Board candidates for the 2025 Board of Directors. The Committee was clear that this was not an easy task because of the wealth of highly qualified applicants and the structural bylaw limitations on the Committee to only be able to advance nominate three candidates for the available 2025 Board seats. The good news is that our bylaws provide for an alternate petition process to allow a broader group of candidates to participate in the Board elections. Both the Nominating Committee and the Board were encouraged by the level of enthusiasm for Sahalee and for participating in Club governance that were exhibited by all the candidates
Thank you all for your continued engagement and commitment to Sahalee. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the upcoming November 20th Annual meeting and updating the membership on the state of the Club.
Best regards,
Norman
This is my first Tom Tom as your Director of Golf and I am honored to be a part of a club which boasts such a rich history. It has been a pleasure getting to know many of you, and it’s clear how deeply the club resonates with our members. As the leaves begin to transform into their beautiful fall colors, we welcome the changing season. I want to thank Charlie and the Agronomy team for their hard work in completing our annual fall aerification. The golf course is in excellent condition as we move into the offseason. As you plan your fall golfing activities, please remember that we are entering a period where frost delays may occur. Be sure to check ForeTees for daily updates to stay informed.
September was highlighted by the Sahalee Players Championship, where we welcomed thirteen of the nation’s top men’s college golf teams to compete over 54 holes on our South and North nines. The course certainly tested the players, with only seven finishing under par. Arizona State took home the team championship, finishing the tournament at 7-under, while Florida secured second place, eleven shots back. The individual title went to Aiden Krafft from Oregon, who completed the event at 4-under par. We received wonderful feedback from both players and coaches regarding the course conditions and the warm hospitality of our membership. A heartfelt thank you to all the members who hosted and volunteered their time to make this event a success!
Sahalee was proudly represented on the national golf stage by Tomoko Ratzlaff and Kim Shek at the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship, held at Broadmoor Golf Club in Seattle. As the only two players from Washington in the field, they made both Sahalee and our state proud. Kim Shek delivered two solid rounds to qualify for match play, advancing all the way to the Quarterfinals. Her outstanding performance was further celebrated as she earned her third consecutive WA Golf Senior Player of the Year award. Congratulations to Tomoko and Kim for their remarkable achievements!
October brought exceptional course conditions and beautiful weather, allowing us to finish our golfing season on a high note with strong participation in our final events. The SWD Guest Day attracted 82 ladies for one last round of the season, while the SMD Guest Day saw 106 golfers take to the course. Both the Sahalee Men’s and Women’s divisions held their closing awards banquets, celebrating another successful season. Though organized play has wrapped up for the year, the opportunity to enjoy our wonderful golf course continues. Remember, the Handicap posting season runs until November 14th, so feel free to come out and play!
As we enter the offseason, my team and I will begin planning for the upcoming season. We’ll assess any staffing needs and start the team-building process to ensure we return for the 2025 season with a dedicated team ready to provide our membership with a memorable experience. I look forward to continuing to meet each of you around the club!
All the best,
KEVIN
Congratulations to Dan Waggoner for his Hole in One on 4 North!
October on the golf course(s) featured seasonal changes that Pacific Northwesterners are all too familiar with. As sunny days gave way to cooler weather and more frequent rain, course conditions have responded accordingly and our turfgrasses are showing signs of wear and tear from another busy golf season. With these seasonal changes, it’s important to remember the maintenance programs and best practices that we all share a part of to preserve our course(s) through the PNW autumn and winter.
With wetter than usual conditions on the course(s), managing cart and foot traffic is vital to protecting our playing surfaces. Under saturated conditions, power carts will largely be restricted to paths to prevent damage to turf areas. There are also important practices for push carts and walkers to follow that can help protect our playing surfaces—please note the following
When applicable, walkers should utilize cart paths to navigate tee and greens complexes where traffic is heaviest.
Push carts should travel around the outside of greenside bunkers and other hazards. These features pinch traffic towards our greens and collars, which leads to excessive wear and damage. By traveling outside of bunkers and hazards near our greens, we protect these putting and chipping surfaces. Wooden stakes and directional signs are used by the turf care team to divert traffic away from excessively wet areas and towards more accessible routes through many challenging areas of our course(s). Please avoid any traffic through such areas (pictured below) to prevent damage to weak turfgrasses.
The shorter days, cooler temperatures and extensive shade experienced throughout the fall and winter at Sahalee dramatically slow plant growth and recovery potential. Because of this, it’s just as important as ever to properly repair divots and ball marks.
• To repair divots on the golf course there are two options. If a divot is large and intact, it can be replaced in the ground and stepped down for the quickest recovery. And for those times when a divot is not intact or easily replaceable, use divot mix to fill divots so that they are level with surrounding area. Regardless of the option used, stepping down replaced or filled divots limits disruption to play later in the day
• With softer conditions through the fall and winter, ball marks on greens become much larger and more prominent when shots land on our playing surfaces. Please repair your own ball mark on each green as well 1-2 more as you see them. Refer to the USGA graphic below of best ball mark repair technique.
Our maintenance team works diligently each day to protect and care for our course(s), but your help goes a long way towards maintaining the best possible conditions. Thank you!
See you on the course, Charlie Schauwecker
