Have you ever thought about serving on a Committee?

Since 1969 Sahalee has been self governed for members by members. The major strength of a committee is its ability to represent a cross section of the club For this reason, both certificate holders and spouses of Certificate holders are encouraged to volunteer Please understand that by volunteering for a committee you are making a commitment to attend regular monthly meetings and be a team player while demonstrating a willingness to take on related assignments

Be on the lookout for an email with all the details but in the meantime; email Brittiany for more information!

TO NEW MEMBERS!

A Letter from our President

I was delighted in October to welcome Sahalee’s eleventh General Manager, Leslie Ludlow. Leslie was the Board’s top choice among all the candidates considered. She brings so many important strengths to Sahalee: her diverse experience at equity and corporate-owned clubs, successfully running large professional tournaments, strong financial acumen, and her rave reviews from team members under her amazing leadership. Leslie is going to provide Sahalee the leadership and direction we need to further enhance our member experience and our status as the best in the Northwest.

Past Business

The BOD received an update from Mr. Tyler Dion, Board Member and Chair of Sahalee’s Championship Committee. A team from the PGA of America spent 2 days onsite with the Sahalee Team to discuss the details of hosting the 2024 KPMG Championship. The PGA was thrilled with the improvements Sahalee has made to our golf course and clubhouse. They also loved the new bunker design that Charlie, Sahalee’s Director of Agronomy, is overseeing. Overall, it was a very favorable meeting, and the two teams are progressing towards a final agreement. We will share this news with the membership when it’s all final.

As mentioned in my article last month, the BOD approved and put to a Regular Member vote four bylaw recommendations. For Regular Members, if you haven’t voted please do so (here) before our annual meeting on November 15th. For everyone’s awareness, here’s a quick summary of the recommended changes (more can be found under Important Documents on Sahalee’s website):

1) Change the terminology of “regular member” / “regular membership” to “Proprietary Member” / “Proprietary Membership” throughout the entirety of the Bylaws.

2) Adopt a new privilege for Proprietary Membership allowing members to transfer their membership to eligible Family Members before death or disability

3) Specify with greater clarity the start and end dates for Officer and Director terms to start January 1st and end their term on December 31st. 4) Adopt a series of changes recommended by outside counsel that both modernizes Sahalee’s Bylaws and brings the Bylaws into compliance with a new Washington State act.

Also this month, the Board approved an updated cellphone policy recommended by the House Committee. This ‘modernized’ policy recognizes the critical role cellphones play in our lives especially considering the newly launched Sahalee App. Please review it here.

After approving the new Cash Reserve and Investment policies, our Controller Siemon Slagter is working with our banking partners to put Sahalee’s investable cash to work. With interest rates rising, we expect the initial investment will yield greater than 4% for the capital invested in Treasury Bills. For comparison, our refinanced debt is at a fixed rate of 3.15%, maturing in 2031. We estimate the interest earned will exceed $100,000 per year for the foreseeable future.

Lastly, I hope everyone is enjoying the visual change the new Sahalee bunkers have provided. It will be just a short time before the turf on East firmly establishes and the bunkers are open for play. When finished, it will feel like we have a brand-new golf course. The project continues roughly on-time and budget, although weather will play a determining factor in progress on North and South courses. The team appreciates everyone’s patience as we work through this monumental project.

New Business

The Board and Sahalee team are actively working on several “end of year” priorities:

Wrapping up 2022 financial results

Preparing the 2023 budget

Preparing for the annual meeting

Continuing work on potential future bylaw changes that we hope to share with membership soon as part of a “comment period” to get thoughts and feedback.

As communicated earlier, the Annual Meeting is set for Tuesday November 15th at 6pm in the Sahalee room. Coffee and hors d’oeuvres will be provided. We are planning to host the meeting in person. There will also be an online-meeting link for those not able to attend in person. In addition to providing the results on the bylaws vote, we will also tabulate and provide final vote results on the new class of Directors for the Board. If you haven’t voted for the slate of 2023 Directors, you may do so here

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone there, and sharing the successes from 2022, and the exciting direction we are moving toward in the new year If you have a question on your mind, please send me a note and we’ll try to address it at the Annual Meeting. Sincerely,

A Letter from our Director of Golf

As much as we were lamenting the weather this past spring, Mother Nature sure didn’t disappoint this fall, did she? Despite the terrible wildfire smoke that inhabited the Puget Sound for the better part of September/October, the warmer days offered great opportunities to get out and enjoy the golf course The course recovered nicely from the September aeration, but more importantly, it also helped to continue accelerating our awesome bunker project While the versatility and enjoyment of 27 holes has certainly been missed by our Sahalee community, the work which has been completed on the East Course has been spectacular We are looking forward to similar success on the remainder of the golf course and sharing these amazing results Our intention is to continue to provide the membership with timely updates as we move forward into our Championship sides

As they say in Hollywood ”That’s a wrap ” Our 2022 golf activities calendar officially concluded at the end of October, and wow what a year it was! I recently shared with our golf professional team that we completed over 100 (113 to be exact ) golf events/activities from mid March through the end of October From golf clinics, junior golf development, camps, PGA Junior League, demo days, tournaments/events, 2022 was a very busy season for the team This past year was filled with many spectacular golf achievements from our membership, but one personal highlight for me was watching our Sahalee families enjoy Father’s Day weekend with the Parent/Child event Sharing the game we all love with our family is truly special Golf transcends generations, and that white ball has no idea how old any of us are! (Thank goodness….) I will share that we have much to be proud of, and reflecting on the year, this was truly a pivotal transitional season for my golf professional staff. I am excited about the brand that we are building, and there are some very exciting things to look forward to in 2023.

Speaking of 2023, the heavy lifting on continuous improvement is already underway. The offseason is our opportunity to work on the business, and I can say our Sahalee Golf Professional team is looking forward to completing several projects which will create an even better golf experience at the High Heavenly Ground. I won’t spill the beans on all the enhancements and improvements in this month’s newsletter, but I will say we are committed to making the Sahalee the best of the Northwest!

As we head into “off season” mode, I would be remiss if I didn’t remind everyone of the awesome AboutGolf simulator bays we have available in the Swing Room For those that haven’t yet experienced the system, I would encourage you to check it out during these coolers (potentially frosty) and rainy days that are surely ahead AboutGolf is more than just a practice tool as it offers opportunities to play courses from all over the world Additionally, the system has a variety of “games” and challenges to help make improvements in a variety of facets with your game To reserve a time in the simulator bay, simply use the Sahalee App, or call the golf shop and we will help make it available This winter, stay tuned for a winter golf league using the simulators that we are excited to introduce!

Speaking of frosty weather, I would like to take an opportunity to share with the membership our Frost Procedures/Protocols for the upcoming late fall/winter season Upon receiving notification from the agronomy team that we are under a weather delay, the golf professional team will immediately post the information to Foretees, and lock the tee sheet for the day My team will send emails only to those that have tee times for the given day and notify them of the turf situation Secondly, we intend to communicate to the membership at large through the Sahalee App All information will be issued through the “notifications” feature of our Club App We are streamlining this important communication and reduce the number of emails that are sent/shared with the membership You may continue to call the golf shop as well should you need any frost or weather related details.

The off season is a fabulous time to put together your golf goals and start to think about a plan to help you play your best golf in 2023! I encourage everyone to assess their game by evaluating their strengths and weaknesses. If you’re unsure and keep your stats through GHIN posting (which I strongly encourage) take a scroll through that information. It will give you some ideas as to where you might be leaving a few strokes on the course. Just like a business, a personal SWOT of your golf game will help direct you on where to better spend your time and energy as we march into the next season. If you’re unsure as to where to look, please come see the golf professional team. We would be delighted to help you! PS If you haven’t been recently fit (within 2 3 years for a driver) and 3 4 years for irons, a technology update would be very beneficial I recently completed a driver fitting for a member that had technology from two seasons ago, and we increased carry distance by 17 yards! It doesn’t hurt to get checked out that’s two less clubs going into a green who wouldn’t want that?

By the way, Assistant Golf Professional Laura Kraft offers TPI screenings, and the off season can also be a great time to work on your physical health by improving your stretching/flexibility and overall conditioning Believe me, it will help you to improve your game and increase your speed!

I will leave off with some fun thoughts for you to consider: The next time you play, try this:

• Commit to your shot and hit it in 10 seconds of less.

• Standing over the ball going through a mental checklist is a major roadblock to great golf performance.

o Pick a target

o Set up

o React to the target (aka Pull the trigger!)

All in 10 seconds or less when on the course you can do it!

One other fun stat (this came from Alan Murray Coach of the Men’s Golf Team at University of Washington) from exactly 5 feet PGA Tour pros miss 24% of their putts The best players on the planet miss one out of four putts from five feet! Manage your expectations when playing

On Saturday, November 19, the Golf Professional team will be hosting a “Play with the Pro” Pro Am experience at the Club. All my team will be playing with three members on this day in a 1 gross/1 net format. It’s important to me that we connect with the Sahalee community on the golf course, and we are excited to do this with you all. Be on the lookout for information related to this in the weekly update, and I hope you will consider joining us.

As we start to enter the holiday season, our Golf Shop Merchandiser, Stacie Scheffer, has done a fabulous job transforming the golf shop. We are featuring some lifestyle pieces from Mizzen and Main, Peter Millar, and Johnny O. We will have a Thanksgiving weekend special, and several opportunities throughout December for great savings to get those special items for your friends and family.

Happy Holiday season and we look forward to seeing you at the Club!

Member Ian Siebers Finishes as Co-Medalist, Duke Sweeps Georgetown Intercollegiate

Duke men's golf swept the Georgetown Intercollegiate last month, securing its first team title of the 2022-23 season. Sahalee Member Ian Siebers medaled for the first time in his career. The Blue Devils ended the tournament nine shots ahead of second place with a team score of 864 (E), and Siebers was co-medalist at 5-under 211

Sahalee Golf Excellence

2022 will certainly be a year to remember for a pair of Sahalee members in the 50 and over category! Last month, WA Golf announced its annual awards and Erik Hanson and Kim Shek were recognized by the State Golf Association for their golf prowess as Senior Golfers of the Year for men and women, respectively. Earlier this year, Shek earned medalist honors at the US Senior Women’s Open qualifier at The Home Course and secured a slot in the fourth Senior Women’s US Open at NCR Country Club in Dayton, Ohio. In September, she won the Washington State Women’s Golf Association Senior Championship. Shek is currently our Sahalee Women’s and Senior Women’s Club Champion. Kim also placed 6th in the Washington Women’s Champion of Champions this past year! This was the first time Kim has received the Senior Women’s Player of the Year award, and it’s well deserved after the amazing 2022 season.

In 2022, Erik Hanson saw success locally, regionally and nationally. Hanson won the Washington Senior Men’s Amateur and the PNGA Senior Men’s Amateur. Hanson tied for fourth at the Washington Senior Open, and tied for 19th in the Washington Men’s MidAmateur. He has played in 15 USGA national championships, and this year was the first time he qualified for the U.S. Senior Amateur, where he made the round of 64. This is the second time Hanson has received this award, having previously been named in 2016!

Congratulations to both Kim and Erik on their fantastic play this past season! We are very proud of your success and for representing Sahalee.
