President's Message from Scott
Over the last month, the Board of Directors has been focused on soliciting feedback and finalizing the path forward on bylaw changes and the new membership categories. There has been great thinking and feedback from the membership (via the information session as well as over 50 one-on-one conversations) as well as the perspectives of the Membership, Golf, and Finance Committees – each support moving forward with the planned memberships with important changes The Board has aligned around a path forward, incorporating the feedback we received. A detailed communication was sent last week sharing the Board’s recommendations and announcing a vote and special meeting on Thursday April 27th.
February Past Business
Our GM, Leslie Ludlow kicked off our meeting by summarizing Sahalee’s financials through the end of February. The club is slightly ahead of our operating budget. Probably most encouraging is the volume and momentum of our F&B operations which has been steadily building I commented to the Board that through one-on-one meetings I have had with Leslie, I’m impressed with her efforts to build a cohesive, well-functioning team as well as her attention to a wide variety of details on both the member experience and cost side of our business. Leslie is introducing good management leadership practices that will help with effective team communications. And I think we all agree we are starting to see her influence over Sahalee’s food & beverage operations with an increased level of planning, communicating and executing more regular themed events (prime rib night – yea!). I’ve heard from several members who tell me the quality and experiences are noticeably better. We all recognize there’s more to do, but I feel we’re heading in a positive direction. And the results show it with food cost of sales improving by 10% versus the first 2 months of 2022 and “covers” (number of persons serve being up 26% over last year in our first two months of 2023.
Charlie updated the BOD on the conclusion of the bunker transformation project. I think we can all agree they look fantastic. The project took a bit longer but was completed slightly under budget – which is a great demonstration of vendor management on Charlie’s behalf. I suspect we’re all going to be in for a rude awakening when we have to hit a golf ball out of our new jewels and can’t just admire their beauty from afar At this time, Charlie is anticipating an April 15th open date for all bunkers
The Board approved a recommendation from the finance committee for a focus on Proprietary Membership sales, with a small discount of the Membership Price to select recipients who the club already knows (e.g., Jr. Executives). Our Proprietary Membership sales goal is 36 new members for 2023 with a blended Membership Price slightly lower than our full rate of $50,000. I’ve heard from a few of you that we should focus on Proprietary Memberships and I couldn’t agree more. In addition to touring new Prospective Members we are hopeful that this targeted effort will produce 10 or more new Proprietary Memberships conversions / sales. With this approval, Deann, our new Membership Director is on it.
Additionally, the Board approved a new tee time reservation policy. As part of the plan to create more value for Proprietary Members, the Board approved a policy whereby Proprietary and Senior Members will enjoy 7-day advanced access to the tee sheet. Associate Members other than Social will continue to have 5-day access. And Social Members will have 3-day access. Additional benefits for Proprietary Members were also approved including free use of the aboutGolf simulators all year, exclusive access to our Golf Professional team to request reciprocal rounds at other clubs, and complimentary club fittings. The leadership team is now determining how to put this all into action. Also on the golf side, the Board approved the Golf Committee’s recommendation to implement a “Game Manager” program. Basically, for members leading larger, open, and weekly games, the Pro Shop will help secure and populate available tee times so that the administrative burden can be eased The hope is this has the added effect of bringing back a more vibrant community culture, with a boost to F&B before and/or after the matches. Look for more information on the Game Manager program from Bryan Nicholson soon.
Finally, the Board spent the bulk of our March meeting discussing and planning for the upcoming membership and bylaw changes – taking into account all of the feedback we’ve heard We have made over 10 substantive changes given all the great input and feedback we received. From cap reductions, to reduced golf course access and pricing changes. I believe the overall sentiment from the Finance Committee sums it nicely: go slow to learn. While a formal vote is required for all of the bylaw proposals, the Board all agreed we needed to provide members with an opportunity to vote on the new membership categories as well. We will provide a full description of all the changes being proposed as well as why the Board believes this is the right path forward for the long-term interest of Sahalee
Lastly, the Board approved four new Members: Joseph and Julia Lee and David Tan as two new Proprietary Members (David is upgrading from a Social Member). And Fernando and Sherri Alvarado and Amanda and Sean Standley as new Social Members. Welcome to Sahalee!
Future Business
Our jigsaw puzzle is coming together. Our April meeting will focus on responding to an upcoming Special Meeting vote on the new memberships and proposed bylaw changes later this month. I’m hopeful I will be in a position to summarize the results and path forward in my May Tom Tom article Finally, a special shout out to Sahalee’s very own Carter Cline (age 9), who did Sahalee proud by qualifying for the national championship of Drive Chip & Putt. The finals were held this past Sunday at Augusta National Golf Club. What a special experience for Carter and his family. I am looking forward to the warm weather I see ahead and the recovery of the golf course from our annual spring aerification. See you on the course soon.
Sincerely,
Scott Heydon Club President
Monthly Message from Leslie Ludlow, GM/COO
Dear Sahalee Country Club Family,
Golf season is officially kicking off on April 15th! We are excited to welcome members back to the course for another great season. Our Agronomy and Golf team have been hard at work to ensure that every part of your playing experience is exceptional upon your return to Sahalee!
With the start to season, we are also thrilled to announce that our Food & Beverage operations will be expanding their hours of operations, providing more opportunities for you to enjoy delicious new Spring food and drink menu items with family and friends. Beginning this month, we will be adding lunch service on Tuesdays, extending Saturday hours, and opening the Golfer’s Grill on additional days.
Having had a successful first quarter with old favorites returning, such as Pasta Night, Prime Rib Night, and Spring Wine Gala, as well as with the introduction of new concepts like Mongolian Grill Night, we have no intention on slowing down with expanding your opportunity to experience all that our Food & Beverage Team has to offer.
From a membership standpoint, we are focusing our efforts this month on creating a robust New Member Orientation program. Our goal is to ensure that all new members feel welcomed, informed, and engaged with our storied culture and community. To achieve this, we have developed a multi-layer, strategic program that includes both golf course and administrative orientations.
Our Professional Staff will lead golf course orientation sessions focused on course etiquette, pace of play, instruction information, proper care of our most valuable amenity and all the wonderful events in which they can participate. This will help new members feel comfortable and confident when playing our Championship course. In addition, we will provide an administrative orientation that includes an introduction to our dress code, billing processes and key staff members. This will help new member navigate the administrative side of the Club and feel supported in their membership.
Furthermore, we believe it is important to intentionally introduce new members to our Club’s storied culture. We want new members to feel connected to our history, traditions, and understand what makes Sahalee so special. To help facilitate connections within our membership, we will also host new member mixers where new members can meet each other and existing members in a fun and relaxed environment. We believe this comprehensive and intentional approach to new member orientation will help new members feel welcomed and integrated into our community.
In addition to ensuring we are constantly centered on our members’ experience, we are also focusing on elevating our team members’ experience as they are Sahalee’s most valuable asset. Beginning this month we have instituted a new Team Member Recognition Program to celebrate the hard work and dedication of our team. Additionally, we are investing in our staff break room to ensure that they have a comfortable and enjoyable space to take a break and recharge. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or any of our great leaders with stories that we can share and celebrate our team.
Thank you for being a part of the Sahalee Country Club Family. We are looking forward to another great season of golf, food, and fellowship with each of you!
Leslie Ludlow General Manager/COO
Sahalee Women’s Golf Team 2023
Our 2023 season is underway!
Despite the rain, wind and bitter cold weather, our Women’s Golf Team represented Sahalee well with their first win at Broadmoor Golf Club, on April 6th. Dawn Naye, our Assistant Captain, made sure that all players were ready to take on the day! Congrats to everyone!
Cheers, Rose Crowe, Team Captain
Letter From Bryan Nicholson, PGA Director of Golf
With the flurries that have been spotted on the hill to start April, I joked with some of my team “If April showers bring May flowers, what do snow showers bring?” Jokes aside, the flowers are starting to pop (and my allergies firing on cue) – so it’s safe to say that springtime has arrived here in Western Washington. After our cold(ish) winter, it’s fantastic to see the Sahalee campus come back to life, basked in some sunnier and longer days to give us all a little more time to work on our golf game. Spring exudes energy, and an opportunity to create fresh goals for the upcoming season. Let’s not forget one of the greatest annual traditions in golf – the little gathering with a green jacket that is played in Augusta, Georgia. Golf activity is certainly ramping up at the Club, and everyone is eager to come out to Sahalee and enjoy their amazing course!
Last month, our Men’s Division kicked off their 2023 golf calendar with the Frostbite Open! Given our sunny and 60-degree day, I’m not too sure the tournament name lived up to its namesake Featuring a four-man shamble format, all our field enjoyed their afternoon of golf Congratulations to the foursome of Dean Kain, Scott Heydon, Patrick Jentz, and Jeff Eisenstein for taking the top honors. With 92 total points the foursome finished just clear of the field and claimed the bragging rights to kick off the new season! Well done, fellas!
Before I get into the meat of this month’s topics – I would like to take a moment to congratulate a few members of my team on their accomplishments this first quarter of the year. First, I am proud to officially announce that Assistant Golf Professional Laura Kraft has completed her requirements for membership into the PGA! Laura is now an official member of the PGA, joining the 28 thousand men and women that work tirelessly to perpetuate our great game. Please take a moment to congratulate Laura on this amazing achievement, which takes a minimum of 3 years to complete. Secondly, I am excited to share the promotion of our AIT, Colin Campbell as our newest Assistant Golf Professional. Colin is a tremendous asset to our Assistant Professional team, and rounds out the best golf professional team in the Northwest Lastly, I’d like to recognize our AIT Grant Heilman who recently completed Golf Genius (tournament software) training and is one of very few “certified” golf professionals in this skill Grant dedicated his off-season to learning the system and software and excelled with its rigorous testing
Pivoting now, as we look ahead to an exciting 2023, I would like to take an opportunity to share what’s upcoming and new on the horizon at your Club. After reading, I think you’ll see why I’m excited, and looking forward to showing why Sahalee is the truly the Best of the Northwest:
New Look to the Practice Tee: After a long and anticipated wait, we recently completed the refresh to the practice range The products that we’ve purchased are customized to complement the look and feel that we’ve begun to incorporate throughout the Sahalee campus The practice area is the most visible aspect of our club and is the first impression of guests and members when arriving to Sahalee Our brand and image are significant aspects to creating a golf experience that is unique, special, and reflective of our position as one of the leading clubs in the United States There is a sense of arrival that is achieved when heading to the practice areas, and top clubs work hard to achieve this mission Our new products are functional, durable, and are timeless with color Additionally, we have added more targets to the practice fairway, inviting members to work on distance increments of 25 yard targets, rather than 50 yard gaps I think you’ll also agree that the additional color on the range helps with identifying your targets
Golf Professional Engagement: This season, each member of your Sahalee golf professional team has been tasked with playing golf with at least 50 unique members throughout the season My team will be active on the course with our membership and helping to promote our great game while assisting you by improving your own golf game! If a member of my team inquires about joining your group, I hope you’ll enjoy the opportunity to interact with them and spend time with them on the course.
Friday Pro’s Game: Coming Soon! The Golf Professional team will soon be organizing a weekly “shop game” that will be open to any/all members of the Club on Friday afternoons The staff will organize and collect requests to participate through Golf Genius and create this fun weekly mixer. This will be a nominal cash game, with variable formats each week Some of the golf professionals will occasionally participate in the game, and my team will handle all the weekly payouts. This will be a fun opportunity to mix and mingle with the staff and other fellow Sahalee members
Instructional Programming: There has never been a better time to work on your game at Sahalee. This spring and summer, my team has developed several clinic opportunities designed to help improve your short game, full swing, speed training, on-course management, and golf fitness. There has never been a better time to work on your game at Sahalee, and I would encourage everyone to consider joining the team in working on your game.
Golf Professional Exhibition: I am thrilled to announce that on Friday, June 16, we will be hosting a Sahalee Golf Professional exhibition for our members and invited guests to attend beginning at 4:30 pm. This fun evening will be highlighted with your golf professional staff putting on a complimentary golf clinic with your Golf Pros displaying their talents, talking about the golf swing, and hitting a trick shot or two! The exhibition will be entertaining, fun, and interactive Afterward, all attendees will have an opportunity to work with a member of your Golf Professional team for a 5-minute swing evaluation on the range.
Sahalee Golf Event Calendar: As you are reading through these bulleted points, member engagement is the top priority At the heart of every successful private club is core event programming This season, your golf professional team is tackling the largest event/activities calendar in the history of our Club. Scheduled golf activities are up 30% from last year, but we’ve strategically planned the calendar to not interfere with the ability to host regular member play. Why would we do this? Last season, 3 out of 4 Sahalee members participated in at least one golf event on the calendar, and our goal this year is for 80% participation We have multiple new events on the calendar, including our Senior Men’s Invitational coming up next month in May.
Sahalee Ravens Programming: Assistant Golf Professional Kyle McPherson is our lead on our enhanced junior golf program Soon we will be releasing our comprehensive guide to all activities with our junior golf program Designed to be the most comprehensive program in all of the Northwest, the Ravens programming is robust with activities from weekly Junior Golf Development, Drive, Chip and Putt, Summer Camps, Junior Golf Certification, and monthly competitions. We are also adding a Junior-Guest Day in mid-July. Being a junior golfer at Sahalee is awesome, and we can’t wait to help develop the future of our game
Personalized Golf Ball and Glove Program: We currently have nearly 50 members participating in our complimentary Golf Ball and Glove Program. This personalized service for golf balls and gloves is available exclusively for Sahalee members and features the lowest prices anywhere You will not find golf balls or gloves lower cost than this program. We hope you’ll consider joining this program – and information is in our weekly updates.
Golf Shop Retail: This season, we have all the top brands in the game in golf featured in the golf shop. Peter Millar, Greyson, Johnny O, FootJoy, Nike, Adidas, Lululemon among others are all prominently featured in the shop. We are enhancing our women’s selections in 2023 and we will be hosting more trunk shows throughout this upcoming year As always, members receive preferred pricing in the golf shop, and we provide you with the ability to access and special order anything you may need to look good both on and off the golf course.
I have many more exciting things to share and will do so next month as we launch into the 2023 golf season. I’ll leave off this month with some spring food for thought:
As many of you may remember, I spent over 15 years of my career in the Lone Star State Let’s talk about The "Texas Wedge” – because I often hear "Your worst putt is better than your worst chip!" Is it true? Does the data support it?
Arccos Golf tracks thousands of shots played annually by golfers of all handicaps After a deep dive into the data –here is what we find:
Putting wins in all situations but one When mid to high handicap players (10 – 36) are 5 to 15 feet from the edge of the green: They are ~0.10 shots better with putter, and their worst putt will be ~3 to ~6 feet closer than their worst chip.
When mid to high handicap players are 15+ feet from the edge of the green: They are ~0.15 to ~0.25 shots better with putter, and their worst putt will be ~5 to ~7 feet closer than their worst chip. Lower handicap players (9 and below) have more options. Putting is slightly better inside ~55 feet, and when outside 60 feet, chipping becomes the better option by a small amount.
What Does This Mean For You?
When you are in the fairway near the green, most mid to high handicap players should be using the putter as much as possible. You need a very good reason to not use a putter. Lower handicap players should use the putter when in close, and as they get farther from the hole, look to chip the ball.
I would encourage you to spend a small amount of practice time hitting lag putts from off the green. I don't want you to avoid practicing your chipping, but refining your putter from off the green can be a very reliable play that will help you shoot lower scores
I’ll look forward to seeing you at the Club!
Fairways and Greens, Bryan

Sandwiches & Spring Hours
Spring is right around the corner, bringing more members onto the golf course and into the clubhouse! We have a few changes in April that we are excited for our members to experience –
You voted and we are listened! The Honor Bar will be filled with our Sahalee Sandwich Smackdown entries created by our culinary staff. We will be providing the Roast Beef, Pesto Chicken and Turkey Cranberry sandwiches as well as our Peanut Butter&Jelly and Egg Salad sandwiches. We will still have our member favorite Chicken Salad available, but this will be in a to go cup for those that would like a gluten free option.
The turn in weather provides us with the opportunity to freshen up our menu in the dining facility as well! Chef Adrian and his team have added a few new features for our Spring menu that will be sure to tantalize your taste buds – Mango Salsa and Chips, Arancini (fried risottos balls), Spicy Buttermilk Fried Chicken, Mushroom Fettucine and our Sahalee Sandwich Smackdown Champion – The Grilled Rueben. We have also upgraded our steak cuts to USDA Prime in response to recent member feedback. This new menu is being launched tomorrow and we are looking forward to serving you!
Our culinary team has been extremely successful with our fresh sheets and members have been responding with a lot of positive feedback. In order to give our members a better opportunity to try everything that we are offering, we are extending our fresh sheets to two weeks at time. We hope that everyone will take advantage of this to sample the creativity that is percolating in our kitchen!
Beginning April 25th, we will be opening for lunch on Tuesdays and extending our hours on Wednesdays and Saturdays to offer a limited menu until 7pm. As the days lengthen, this will give golfers a chance to grab a drink and a bite after their round and help elevate the overall member experience! We are looking forward to continuing to look for new opportunities and services to make our members happy and proud of their club!
KPMG Women’s PGA Championship Player Profile
Who’s Coming to Sahalee in 2024?
This month’s featured player needs very little introduction to the Sahalee membership. Currently ranked as the current World #1 Golfer, Lydia Ko, has simply been a prodigy from the very beginning of her career. With 19 LPGA Tour victories, and 2 majors, Ko has been in a league of her own from the beginning of her career. Most can remember the “Battle of the Titans” between her and eventual Champion, Brooke Henderson in the 2016 Women’s PGA Championship here at Sahalee Ko lost to Henderson on the first playoff hole after the two players tied after 72 holes
Now, Ko is the top ranked female golfer in the world for the second time in her career, and remarkable, she first achieved the top billing in February 2015 at only 17 years old, making her the youngest player of either gender to be ranked No. 1 in professional golf.
Ko has enjoyed much success from an early age holding many youngest accolades on the LPGA Tour. Until 2017, she is the youngest ever (age 15) to win an LPGA Tour event. In August 2013, she became the only amateur to win two LPGA Tour events Upon winning The Evian Championship in France she became the youngest woman, at age 18 years, 4 months to win a major championship Her closing round of 63 was a record lowest final round in the history of women's golf majors, but she then later broke her own record with a 62 at the 2021 ANA Inspiration
Remarkably, in 2014, as a 16-year-old teenager, Ko was named as one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential people in the world. Ko has also been named among the Top 25 athletes and influencers in all of women’s sports. Ko is a two-time Olympic medalist competing in both the 2016, and 2020 summer games, representing her home Country of New Zealand.
Last Season, Ko won the CME Group Tour Championship and collecting its $2 million first-place prize, completing the LPGA Tour season with three wins, the LPGA Player of the Year award for the second time in her career, the Vare Trophy for the lowest scoring average, and was the 2022 leading money winner We will look forward to welcoming Lydia Ko back to the High Heavenly Ground in June, 2024!

A Note from our SWD Captain
Saturday morning “Winter Golf” is over for the season, organized by our Winter Warrior, Sue Ursino, who led the brave souls around the course Sometimes they golfed, snowy days just walked the course but always enjoyed each other! Friendships were both made and deepened
With weather delays on Saturdays, they weren’t often able to gather for brunch Missing social time, we're having an end of winter celebration dinner on April 14th, 6:00. It will be a casual affair and nothing will be planned except to be together, see old friends and welcome some new ones. Please email sursino@comcast.net to make your reservation.
All SWD members are welcome - you don't have to be a part of the Saturday golf bunch!
The monthly complimentary seminars for SWD members are underway and well attended with an average of 20 participating These sessions are valuable for everyone, regardless of golf capabilities The feedback from attendees has been very positive and quite a boost for Sue Ursino, our leader.
Make these learning opportunities a priority and consider staying for lunch afterwards with your friends
The two remaining sessions are:
May 6, 9-11: Match Play Strategies and Match Play Rules presented by Sue Ursino and the Pro Shop (just in time for Captain’s Cup)
June 3, 9-11: The Mental Side of Golf, presented by the Pro Shop

Lessons with Ryan Benzel
In my latest instruction video, I talk about eliminating 3-putts in your rounds. I talk about a players need to have a “mental acceptance” of their first putt, especially a distance or lag putt. There can be more to the process for each of you to learn, improve, and eliminate 3-putt, so further break down can benefit anyone. Schedule a putting lesson as we begin this season…I will use our Quintic Ball Roll putting system to use data to help you understand how you can practice and how you can improve your putting, and shoot lower scores with better putting.

What is the Wine Club?
With the food and beverage minimum including all beverage sales, the Wine Club has been a topic of conversation recently. I would like to explain how the Wine Club works for those members that haven’t yet taken advantage of this fantastic benefit!
For a one-time $50 fee, the Wine Club is a way for members to buy wine through the club at very reduced rates for take home use. We typically have two wine features per month – one that is only communicated to WC members through email and a complimentary tasting at the club; usually on a Friday night later in the month. For each of these features, WC members have a set length of time to order individual wines from the feature. This allows us to collect a large order that gives us the best possible price from our distributors. The order will be charged to the member’s account in the month that it was placed, which counts against the food and beverage minimum for the quarter, and assembled once the delivery is made. The member is then notified by email that their order is ready and can be picked up by speaking to the bartender or manager on duty. Wine Club pricing is not honored in the dining room and is not typically allowed to be ordered from the current wine list to be taken home. This is to protect the integrity of the dining room wine list as we don’t keep a large inventory of each wine on this list. Special order can be made, but may incur a minimum order from the distributor. Features
Cost plus 15% on WC featured wines, not including tax
Discounted corkage fee in the restaurant ($10 per 750ml bottle)
Monthly emails with exclusive wine offerings
Priority invitations to wine events (ability to sign up early for certain events)
How do I sign up for the Wine Club? Email Justin Keener at justink@sahalee.com to join
Is there a Wine Club list that I can order from? No. Orders for the Wine Club are made from the monthly features or by special order.
