KNOW YOUR PGA

PRO Kenneth Dube - PGA Professional Royal Oak Country Club

1.

When did you qualify as a PGA Professional? In the year 2000.

2.

What made you choose this career? It’s a gentleman’s sport and it teaches discipline, it sharpens your instincts and it’s not a violent sport at all.

3.

Has it always been golf for you? No, before golf there was fishing.

4.

Did you ever play or did you ever want to play on tour? Yes I have played on tour as I had always wanted to.

5.

You just won the PGA Club Professional of the year award, what does this mean to you and the club? This is an honour for me and i am grateful for it, the exposure is great for the club.

6.

Who has been you mentor in the golfing industry?

4

Roger Manning, Peter Nichols and Norman mashaba. 7.

Describe a typical work day for a PGA Club Professional. Wake up at 5am, open the premises at 6am & welcome members, players and guests. Start the morning field and marshall here and there where there might be complaints. At 10am-11am I come back for the Golf Academy lessons and start the afternoon field. I then interact with the morning field members until it’s prize giving at 6pm.

8.

With South Africa going through a really dry period, how do you manage your water situation? Normally the East Rand gets a lot of rainfall throughout the year so we never really experienced drought and we use borehole water.

9.

The members of a golf club always come first. Do you agree with the phrase “The member is always right”? Yes members always come first.

10. With consumers being careful on how they spend their money these days, are you finding other ways besides golf to attract people to the club? Yes, we sometimes host private functions. 11. Slow play is one of the biggest problems in golf today, how do you manage slow play at Royal Oak Country Club? I have marshalls on the golf course to make sure there’s no slow play. 12. Does your position require you to be available on weekends, evenings, and holidays, and if so, does this place demands on your personal life? Yes im required to be around on weekends, holidays and some evenings, yes it does,

Not really, the goals have not changed. 14. What is your opinion on the state of golf in South Africa? Golf is an underlooked sport in South Africa. I feel our government could do a lot in terms of investments and educating the young and people interested in the sport. 15. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? For me golf isn’t just a job, it is a hobby as well, so in my free time i play a couple of rounds with friends and family. 16. Do you still get time to play? Although i have my hands full as a Club-Pro I do however make time for practice and play with some of my members as well as Pro-Ams.

small target... small miss by Mark Fairbank

W

e have all heard the phrase “Small target, small miss”. Unfortunately this is one of those phrases that get thrown around in practice areas and bars without actually truly understanding the benefits or being considered as a serious tool to drastically improve focus and performance.

Selecting a specific target and then narrowing your thought process has huge benefits mentally which lead to significantly improved shot execution and scoring. The illustration on the right demonstrates the link between: thought process, focus, target and how big a “miss” can become.

8

www.sagolftrader.co.za

September | October 2018

tuition & instruction The two red sections on either side of the green illustrate the range with which a player can potentially miss their shot when failing to select a very specific target and engaging in a poor thought process. These are some common examples of negative thought processes that players have that may result in poor execution and the resultant big miss: •

“Don’t go left / right”

“Don’t top it / chunk it”

“Don’t slice / hook it”

There is a vast array of negative thoughts that lead to a golfers shot going as wide as the red zone illustrates, almost all of these will be outcome based thoughts. Outcome based thoughts, even those not as negative as the examples above, distract a player from staying in the present, staying focused on the process and executing a good golf shot. Sometimes, even when we are trying to be constructive and positive, we engage in thoughts that could divert us from being present, resulting in a wide miss:

“Just hit the fairway”

“Just hit the green”

“Just keep it in play”

We therefore want to be in the green zone, this is absolutely target focused with a thought process of executing a good shot, clean strike or hitting the ball. To do this begin by picking a specific target, this could be a particular branch, leaf, piece of bark on a tree or anything that is easy to see, small, specific and in the intended area of play. Now that you have a picked a specific target, you also need to narrow our thoughts. While taking practice swings and while standing behind the ball, your only thoughts should be on the shot shape, ball flight and a pure strike. It is a great exercise to visualise and imagine the perfect shot, this can be made easier be recalling the last time you hit that particular club perfectly. Great examples of a good thought process approaching the ball and while addressing the ball are:

“At the target with a fade”

“Clean strike on the back of the ball”

“Smooth swing”

These are examples of very narrow and process focused thoughts, which combined with a specific target will lead to better execution and the ball finishing closer to your target.

This kind of thought process puts one in the orange zone. By focusing on hitting fairways or greens, we think we are becoming process focused but we are still outcome focused and general in our selection of target. If we are aiming in a general direction, we will likely miss in the general direction. This is often a cause of players “choking” towards the end of a good round or when they are in the lead - they become defensive under the pressure and adopt a thought process of “just hit it in play”,

September | October 2018

“just hit the fairway” or “just hit the green”. This thought process is too wide (non specific), bringing a wider miss into play resulting in the “choke”.

It is near impossible to prevent negative thoughts by trying to deliberately stop them. It is much more productive to replace these thoughts with positive and process based ones. A good method is to reinforce these thoughts by verbalising them. Saying your thoughts out aloud will ensure that there is only one key thought going into your shot. The combination of picking a specific target and having a positive swing thought will result in smaller misses and improve your scores.

JOHN COLLIER - SUSTAINABLE GOLF

STRENGTHEN YOUR SUSTAINABILITY CREDENTIALS BY PARTICIPATING IN THE 2018 JOHN COLLIER SURVEY

T

he Annual John Collier Survey provides an essential tool for chairmen, management committees and club management of golf courses as well as industry representative bodies, to measure themselves against industry benchmarks and the latest trends in governance and environmental compliance.

The eleventh Annual John Collier Survey shows a steady improvement in compliance levels by golf clubs in South Africa in terms of good governance and environmental compliance. Inextricably linked to the issues of good governance and environmental compliance, is the issue of sustainable development or as this is now more frequently supplanted by “sustainability” as the shorthand version and assumed equivalent. The Annual Survey illustrates that a great deal of work still needs to be done in the fields of environmental governance and sustainability and highlights the importance of where golfing civil society can make an impact. At a national level, golf leadership needs to build on the positive narrative of golf in South Africa through active advocacy by engaging with all spheres of government making sure golf’s voice and opinions are consistently heard and considered; keeping in mind that golf organizations can make a difference; that people working together can make a difference; that advocacy is a democratic tradition; that one can help find real solutions; that policy makers need your expertise; that the views of golfing organizations are important; and that advocacy advances golf organizations cause and builds public trust. Make your Club’s voice heard by participating in the 2018 Annual Survey. Email: ajcollier@telkomsa.net or Call: 083 455 7712

Jacques Botes 1. Where were you born and which schools did you attend? Johannesburg, Anton van Wouw Primary (Pretoria), Potchefstroom Gimnasium and Maritzburg College. 2. You played most of your rugby for the Sharks but where did your rugby career start? I played a lot of club rugby for Tuks, but was given an opportunity at the Pumas at the end of 2002. 3. When you first ran out for the Pumas in 2002 did you ever think you would retire a seasoned professional after 12 years with over 300 first class matches (including a record 156 currie cup appearances)? Definitely not, I’m so blessed to have been able to experience an amazing rugby journey having made awesome memories, seen wonderful places and made friends for life. 4. You played at flank and eight-man, what was your favourite position? Most of my matches were at flank and it suited me more but I loved eight-man because you have more freedom. 5. How has the role of the flanker evolved over the last decade? I think the general skill of loose forwards has had to increase quite a bit the last couple of years. Aerial skills, lineout skills and off course being a threat at the breakdown area. 6. You always played with a red scrum cap, what was the story behind it? On the lighter side initially, it was so that my wife could recognize me on the field, she wanted a pink one but we settled on red. On a personal note it was a personal reminder that of my Faith in Christ and of His protection and His grace.

7. What was your best moment on a rugby field? I was fortunate to be part of winning teams and some great victories but what stands out is when my son Juvan ran out with me on my last game at Kingspark.

8. How do you think the Boks will do in the rugby Championship? I think they will do well to finish second. I think they are going to battle away from home. Hopefully they can beat the All Blacks here at home. 9. What do you make of the new rules that have

n the banks of the Vaal River in the Free State province and only an hour and a half’s drive from Johannesburg lies the town of Parys. Named by a German surveyor who had participated in the Siege of Paris during the Franco-Prussian War, the location next to the Vaal reminded him of Paris on the Seine River. These days one still gets that feeling when you visit and Parys’ European namesake is very much celebrated throughout town. Blessed with two fantastic golf courses (Vaal de Grace Golf Estate and Parys Golf & Country Estate) it struck us on our recent visit to the town that just as the late great guitarist Gary Moore reminisced about Paris in his 1979 classic “Parisienne Walkways”, a golfer having played here will long to return to these Parysienne Fairways.

Parys Golf & Country Estate

24

Vaal de Grace Golf Estate (under new management) is the first Nick Price signature golf course in South Africa and uniquely features fourteen holes in the North West Province and four in the Free State. Parys Golf & Country Estate is the older of the two, having been built in 1976 and then redesigned in 2007 by Cobie Le Grange with DDV Design. The magnificent layout crosses the banks of the Vaal River and is a real test of golfing prowess.

SPECIAL FEATURE - KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

Shaving Strokes… Putter Woes? Part 1

by Francois Marx

W

What is your favorite club in the bag? For your scores sake, I hope it’s your putter.

It’s amazing how golfers come to select the putters with which they play. Some emphasize feel, some aesthetics, some even choose a putter because their favorite player uses that specific model, sentiment even comes into the equation. Many golfers spend thousands of rands custom fitting every club in the bag, yet the club they will use for more than 30% of their strokes (twice as much as any other club in the bag) is neglected! There are a number of putters a player can putt with successfully. These putters will consist of all the same fitting components / specifications. Understanding which factors play a role in a consistent putting stroke will help you save shots. Putter fitting is a balance of art and science. It puts the right brush in the painter’s hand to create a masterpiece. Successful putting relies a lot on the ability to start the ball on the intended line. You can have the best green reading abilities, but if you’re not able to start the ball on the line, your rate for success declines exponentially. Let’s talk about the major fitting and design components of putting. FITTING COMPONENTS • Offset • Toe hang • Head shapes • Loft • Length • Lie Angle • Weight • Grip Style/Size • Face Material/Texture OFFSET Offset is most commonly talked about with full swing golf clubs. Clubs will literally feature a face

that is offset from the leading edge of the shaft to correct an errant shot. Putter offset is no different. Offset is defined as the shaft placement in relation to the putter face. The amount of offset affects both the player’s ability to aim the putter (visually) as well as square up the face angle at impact. As a general rule of thumb there are three common offset styles: •

No Offset – Commonly found in putters with a straight shaft that goes directly into the putter head. From address, the left edge of the shaft will line up straight with the leading edge of the putter face.

Half Shaft Offset – Commonly found in putters with a small S-Shaped hosel or double bend shaft with no hosel. This means that half of the width of the golf shaft is ahead of the leading edge of the putter face at address.

Full Shaft Offset – Commonly found in putters with hosels and with double bend shafts. This means that a full shaft width will be ahead of the putter face at address.

Different offsets will cause a player to unknowingly aim slightly more left or right relative to the other offset styles, depending on various optical characteristics, such as eye dominance, depth perception, visual acuity, head position at address, and more. Knowing your optimal offset is a crucial aspect of a properly fitted putter. We encourage players to test different offset styles in combination with their favourite putter head shape. When the correct offset is found, a player’s eyes will naturally aim the putter to the intended target. When a player is using the incorrect offset, the player will believe to be lined up to the same location, but in fact, the putter will be misaligned. While it is important to pick a putter head that is attractive to look at, choosing the correct offset is in my opinion the most crucial component to successful putting. One must also consider the effects the shape of a putter has on their ability to use it optimally. Head shapes are split into more rounded vs. more square. When the trailing edge of a putter is rounded,

SPECIAL FEATURE - KNOWLEDGE IS POWER players tending to aim more open to the intended line, while a square trailing edge with more parallel lines tends to encourage a more left bias. Head shape is important to squaring the face angle up at impact because it is directly related to how well a person aims the putter face. Find a shape that you like, but make sure if works!

blades and mallets depending on the hosel design. The amount of toe hang is about 25 degrees. • Face Balanced – This toe hang can also be found in both blades and mallets. The face of the putter will point directly to the sky when allowed to hang naturally. The reason that the toe hang of a putter is so critical – and one of the first design features addressed – is that it is the only characteristic that directly relates to the way the player squares the face at impact. Motion capture technology, high speed cameras, and physics tell us that putting is almost completely ruled by face angle at impact.

Different Putter offstes

Toe Hang If you have always heard people talk about the toe hang of a putter but still do not understand what it means, let’s go ahead and clarify: toe hang is the position in which the toe of the putter points if the putter is allowed to hang naturally. Finding the proper toe hang for your stroke is essential to squaring your face at impact. Think about it like this: if a shaft were to enter the putter through the heel, it would take more effort to rotate the face closed. If a shaft were to enter the putter through the middle of the putter, the face would feel much easier to rotate closed. Keep in mind that more face balanced designs release easier and more heel shafted designs cause the face to stay more open at impact for players who have average to minimal face rotation in their stroke. These are the five most common categories of toe hang styles: • Full Toe Hang – Commonly found in heel shafted blades. The toe of the putter points more directly to the ground when allowed to hang naturally. • ¾ Toe Hang – Commonly found in blades with short and small hosels. The toe of the putter points down by about 75 degrees. • ½ Toe Hang – This toe hang originated with the PING ANSER design. It occurs with most plumbers neck blade putters and hangs about 45 degrees. • ¼ Toe Hang – This toe hang can be found in both

LOFT The loft of a putter is directly related to the quality of launch and spin. In this day and age, we are now trying to maximize putter launch the same way we try to optimize driver launch. In recent testing, it was found that putters with the standard 4 degrees of loft are now launching putts too high and producing backspin. In any fitting conducted, first measure the loft of your own putter. After analyzing measurements of shaft lean and attack angle you can determine the perfect loft for optimal launch and spin. Loft should also be customized based on the surfaces a player typically putts on. To achieve perfect launch on faster greens, a player may require less loft than on slower green speeds. The loft of a putter will also change the player’s perception of the putter face at address. A less lofted putter will appear more open while a more lofted putter will appear more closed. In our Next addition we will address the remaining factors getting you to Shave Strokes.

Happy Golfing!

After three days of competition, Traigh finished a creditable 24th out of 132 players in his age group. Traigh’s father and coach, David van Schalkwyk says the conditions were tough as the players had to contend with both heavy rain and a heat wave on a really demanding course. On the second day, Traigh’s round was suspended by rain after only 30 minutes which meant he had to complete two rounds on the final day.

Q&A with Traigh Pathon: 1) Who taught you to play golf? My dad, my gran, YouTube videos and Kurt Stripp – I did group lessons with him every Saturday when I was 4 years old, and now, my coach Keagan Beyer. 2) Who is the best golfer in your family? Me! 3) Can you keep up with your dad? Sometimes I let him win. 4) Are you a better putter or a better driver? Putter.

Van Schalkwyk says: “The course itself was very difficult with fast greens and much longer than usual distances – the par 5’s felt like par 7’s for Traigh. Even though it was a tough course, he played really well in the context of his age group and, most importantly, had lots of fun during the tournament”.

5) Have you ever had a hole-in-one? Not yet, but I have come very close, on a few occasions.

Traigh hit his first golf ball when he was only 14 months old and played his first full round at the tender age of four. He is the youngest member of Royal Cape Golf Club.

7) When you’re competing, what do you focus on? I play against the course When I’m playing I focus on beating the course, doing my best and having fun.

6) What is it about golf that you enjoy so much? I love seeing the ball go into the hole.

S pecial F eature – R aising a golfing prodigy 8) Which pro golfer do you emulate? I think different ones at different times but I do like Justin Thomas he’s small but pound for pound he’s one of the longest on tour. 9) What four players would you like to play with? Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson and Gary Player. 10) Is being on tour scary or exciting? It usually starts off exciting but gets scary if I do well, the boys are very big and I have to really focus to do well and putt well. At these times, having a really good short game is vital. 11) Do you enjoy other sports besides golf? Yes, athletics and cross country running 12) Which is your favourite golf course? I was lucky to visit St. Andrews but I also love Royal Cape and The River Club

2) Traigh’s most memorable win? US Qualifier in February 2018 - two day tournament with 2nd place 8 shots behind him.

13) Top 3 tips for winning in golf? Head down, finish high and every shot counts.

3) Traigh’s most significant golf title? Top 10 in European Kids Open (9th) and Malaysia Kids Open (7th)

Q&A with Traigh’s parents:

4) How does Traigh stay calm and focused for international trips? Does he have a ritual like most athletes do before a big competition? Early to bed, he eats lots of almonds and pasta and he also listens to his favourite song to get into the right mood for a great day.

1) The secret to raising a golf prodigy? Invest in them when young - we took Traigh for swimming lessons and baby gym. Keep ensuring they believe they can achieve anything and that nothing is impossible. We were lucky Traigh discovered his talent at an early age and as parents we committed to helping him achieve his dreams.

5) What is it like to keep up with the financial side of things the kit, the club fees, etc? Very hard, golf is an expensive sport – we can’t always afford it but we try and keep up with what we can. Since he started playing we’ve bought him second hand clubs. Last Christmas we bought him his first set after saving for a while. We are so thankful for Turkish Airlines for sponsoring our trip to Scotland and America, without them Traigh would not have been able to play internationally this year. 6) Top 3 tips for golf parents? Keep it fun, time is the most valuable investment – money and material things are less important. 7) What’s next for Traigh? Ensuring that he keeps having fun and enjoying the sport. At the end of August we travel to San Lameer in Durban for the Africa Junior Challenge, Africa’s most prestigious golf tournament.

Loubser pips Couch for Bridge Fund win

D

urbanville junior Louis Loubser Jnr defeated Keegan-Slade Couch from Milnerton in extra time to win the second event in the prestigious Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series at Boschenmeer GE last month. Francois Cilliers, who won the season-opening event at Royal Cape GC in July, looked on course for back-to-back victories at the Old Course at Paarl GC. However, the Strand golfer bogeyed the last two holes for a 71, giving Loubser and Couch the chance to pounce. Loubser overturned a bogey at the fifth with an eagle at the par five sixth, and reeled in birdies at 10, 12 to offset further drops at eight and 11. The 16-year-old birdied 17 to move to two-under and set the clubhouse target with a round of 70. Couch started with four straight pars, had a double bogey at the par four fifth, but birdied six and nine to turn level. The 16-year-old fired seven straight pars

68

down the back nine and forced a play-off with a birdie-birdie finish. The pair split the difference in pars at the first, but Loubser hit a great approach into the par-four second and boxed the birdie putt for the win. “That feeling you get when you stripe a driver or sink a long putt is what gets you hooked,” said Loubser. “It is so great to finally win a Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series event, because I have come close so many times. I look forward to the regional finals and the chance to compete for a trip to Pinehurst next year. “Although I guaranteed my spot in the South Final with the win in Paarl, I am definitely going to play some more tournaments. The quality of the organisation and the courses we get to play is great and gives me a chance to play tournament golf at a high level.”

Schaper returns to winning form at North & South Schaper played himself into a three-way tie for the lead with rounds of 68 and 66 at the Rocklands Course and headed into the final round on 10-under alongside Stevens and recent Africa Junior Open champion Casey Jarvis. A final round 67 was enough in the end to pip his nearest rival Stevens by one shot. Schaper was pleased to hit form before he departs for the United States to compete in the Junior Players Championship. “I’ve got great memories of that event, because I made birdie at the last hole last year to make the International Team for the Junior Presidents Cup,” he said. “I didn’t have great results during the GolfRSA National Squad Tour to the UK, but I came back with so much experience. I learned a lot about myself and it highlight the things I needed to work on. I’ve put in some hard work in the last month and it’s really pleasing to see it pay off like this.”

F

ormer number one ranked junior Jayden Schaper made a welcome return the winner’s circle when he claimed the Nomads North and South last month.

The Ebotse golfer ended a 12-month winning drought on the national circuit on a dramatic final day at CC Johannesburg, showing all his experience under pressure as he held of a charging Cole Stevens with a five-under-par 67 to triumph on 15-under 201. The first junior to capture all five Nomads SA Boys titles with his double whammy in the Under-19 Stroke Play and Match Play Championships, Schaper dominated the rankings for the better part of 2017. The 16-year-old GolfRSA National Squad member hit a dry spell after his Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series win last October, but showed glimpses of a return to form with victories in the Fancourt and Ebotse Club Championships.

September | October 2018

His winning total of 201 was one shot better than Stevens, who carded a 68, and five better than Rose and Jarvis. Rose closed with a 71 while Jarvis, who won the Nomads SA Boys U-15 and U-17 titles this season, returned a final round 72.

Groenewald wins thrilling Wild Coast Challenge

V

aughn Groenewald ended his three-year winless run at the venue and tournament of his last victory when he won the Sun Wild Coast Challenge on the first playoff hole last month. He entered the final round trailing Adilson Da Silva – whom, along with Darren Fichardt and Hennie Otto made up the four-man playoff after finishing 16-under-par 194 in regulation – by a single shot on a total of 12-under. Groenewald last entered the winner’s circle in 2015 when he won the same tournament some three years ago. A final round 66 catapulted him to a share of the top spot with the players already mentioned to force the tournament into a sudden death.

70

And, having fallen on the wayside on four other times before, he registered his first playoff win at the Wild Coast Sun CC this week. Unlike a few other times when he looked to be contending from early on in the tournament, this time, he went under the radar until the last couple of holes in regulation play. “I’ve been in a playoff, I think, four times before,” he said, “but, this is the first I have won. I’m always happy for a win.” “I love it here,” he exclaimed, “I love the coast, I love this layout and I think I might just take up membership here.” Over and above all the challenges faced this week, a spectacular golf tournament was served and a worthy contender triumphed.
