JOHN COLLIER 2020

THIRTEENTH ANNUAL

John Collier Survey

GOOD GOVERNANCE AND ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE

O

ne of the conclusions, drawn from the Thirteenth John Collier Annual Survey of Good Governance and Environmental Compliance of South Africa’s golf courses, is that a methodical and disciplined approach to good golf course governance and environmental compliance, are quickly revealed as common characteristics of well-run clubs. These programmatic characteristics will be evident when you visit St Francis Links, which was named the John Collier Survey 2019/2020 TOP CLUB in South Africa. Examples of these characteristics include; transparency, discipline in implementing policies and procedures, an ethical approach towards the club culture and the societal environment, with fairness being of equal

concern for all stakeholders, social responsibility, balanced objectives, and risk management. The last is a key element as risks are an inevitable part of golf club operations. Another excellent example of implementing a programmatic approach is the Dainfern Golf Club, which achieved a compliance level of SILVER for the 2019/2020 review period. Congratulations to Dave Weyer and his management team as well as golf director, Tim Steynberg and greenkeeper, Fanie Bester. All golf clubs throughout South Africa are invited to participate in the 2020/2021 Survey. The costs are minimal, requiring only the time it takes to complete and return the questionnaire, while the benefits are significant.
