Dear Ed

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). The most interesting letter will be published in the next edition of SA Golf Trader.

The best player in the world won The Masters in convincing style. The margin between good and great is very thin, but when you raise the bar even further you go into the superstar category. Scottie Scheffler is entering the Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus zone. How long he can sustain this level of brilliance will determine his place in history, but right now it’s Scottie Scheffler and everyone else.

Augusta National is a test of patience and mental strength. Let your guard down for a second and it will bite you. If you don’t have your A game, you can’t be competitive. Excellent players like Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm & Hideki Matsuyama left Augusta frustrated and mentally defeated. Those that finished under par are to be praised, because their play would normally win a Tour event.

The stage was set for Scottie Scheffler, and he did what the best player in the world should do. Win. That’s when it is the most difficult. Win, when you are supposed to win. Tiger was different. Jack was different. Now Scottie is that type of different.

Regards

Scottie Scheffler was odds-on before the final round for a reason. One gets the feeling the 27-year-old could be tickled from head to toe with a feather and stand completely still. He has now won The Masters twice in his last three attempts, aside from becoming the first golfer to successfully defend the Players Championship.

Since February 2022, Scheffler has lifted nine trophies and three in his last four starts. His broader results point towards unequalled consistency. As the golf world has descended into turmoil, this reserved man has been the superior one inside the ropes. Bravo Scottie Scheffler! Regards

THE SHORT

Part 5: Pitching 101

The basics needed to execute a Pitch shot.

In this article we will be discussing all the basics needed to execute a Pitch shot.

The first thing you need to know is the difference between a Pitch shot and a Chip shot. A Chip shot has more ground-time than air-time, so a Pitch shot will theoretically be in the air longer than along the ground. A Pitch shot is a restricted and controlled golf swing, with a lot more precision required.

Let’s start with the basic set up for a Pitch shot.

1. Grip

For a Pitch shot we would want to have a neutral grip with either an overlap grip or an interlock grip.

2. Aim

For the aim and alignment, we would want our feet and hips to be aiming slightly left of the target (right-handed*) with our shoulders aiming square to the target.

By aiming like this, this would encourage an out-to-in swing path, which is the desired swing path for a Pitch shot in order to increase spin on the golf ball and help with distance control.

3. Set Up

The set up for would be as follows:

As discussed previously, would be aiming our feet and hips, our shoulders aiming straight target. We would ball position to middle of our a wider stance shot but narrower full swing set up.

We want our weight distribution to help maintain strike.

This is the easiest way to consistently hit our Pitch shots to a desired or required distance. This method would need some dedicated practice to ensure all distance and carry distance of the golf ball is accurate.

TAMBURLINI MARCHES TO RECORD WIN IN JOBURG LADIES OPEN

Even at five feet tall, Chiara Tamburlini stood like a giant over this year’s Joburg Ladies Open as the Swiss professional claimed a record seven-shot victory in this Sunshine Ladies Tour and Ladies European Tour event at Modderfontein Golf Club.

Starting the final round with a commanding six-shot lead, Tamburlini was never under pressure as she closed with a 70 to win on 17 under par and record the largest margin of victory in the 10-year

history of the tournament. The previous best was Ashleigh Buhai’s six-shot triumph in the inaugural Joburg Ladies Open in 2015.

It was Tamburlini’s first victory on the Sunshine Ladies Tour and Ladies European Tour and a clear sign of a star in the making, with the 24-year-old having only turned professional in August last year and claiming victory in only her seventh

“It was a special day today, especially being able to win by such a big margin,” said Tamburlini. “I definitely dreamt of this day but that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen. But the more you work towards your dreams the sooner you’re able to achieve them.”

“It felt great starting off with two birdies, but I just tried to keep pushing because it’s never over till it’s over. I told myself I can celebrate once it’s done and sealed. It’s so many emotions and joy from all the hard work and all the people who have supported me.”

But this was indeed a masterclass by Tamburlini as she built on her overnight lead with two birdies to start. Despite her sizeable lead, which at one point was as much as 10 shots, she continued to play aggressive golf which gave her the luxury of being able to drop three shots on her final two holes and still

The tournament also wrapped up a strong commitment by the City of Joburg to support its young girls in need through the Birdies4Dignity campaign, in collaboration with Spar. Every birdie made by a professional golfer during the tournament translated into the donation of a dignity hamper, with 300 hampers donated to girl learners at Bramley Primary School.

“I think this is a very important moment for us to ensure that whatever we do we also elevate women in our sporting activities. It’s been a wonderful four days,” said Cllr Loyiso Masuku, MMC for Group Corporate and Shared Services.

BROOMHEAD WINS ON A DAY CELEBRATING SUNSHINE TOUR EXCELLENCE

Jonathan Broomhead claimed his maiden Sunshine Tour title in the Tour Championship delivered by The Courier Guy at Serengeti Estates and which also wrapped up another thrilling Sunshine Tour season that has opened doors for a new generation of South African stars.

In the final tournament of the 2023-24 season, Broomhead closed with a 69 to win by two strokes on 16 under par over Louis Albertse and Rupert Kaminski.

The tournament also finalised the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit delivered by The Courier Guy.

Ryan van Velzen finished first here in a breakthrough season where he won twice.

His triumph saw him secure a DP World Tour card, a place in the Nedbank Golf Challenge, and Major exemptions into The Open and the US PGA Championship.

“I just played so consistently and had some good finishes in big events. I’m really excited for my DP World Tour season to start later this year and to play in my first Major. I’m also very excited about playing in the Nedbank Golf Challenge which I’ve been watching since I was a kid and now I can compete alongside the players I watched on TV,” said Van Velzen, who also earned a R500 000 bonus for his first-place finish on the Order of Merit

Robin Williams finished second on the Order of Merit delivered by The Courier Guy and also earned himself a DP World Tour card as well as a R200 000 bonus. Williams was also crowned the Fortress Rookie of the Year, earning a R200 000 bonus.

“It’s amazing. It was one of my goals at the start of the year. It opens a lot of doors for me and I’m looking forward to that,” said Williams.

Louis Albertse finished the season in third place on the Order of Merit delivered by The Courier Guy thereby claiming the last DP World Tour card on offer and a R100 000 bonus.

It was certainly a Sunday of incredible rewards for the Sunshine Tour professionals,

with Broomhead leading the celebrations.

“I knew it wasn’t going to be easy and there were going to be so many players around me giving it ago. I knew I just had to stick to my game, and my caddie and I worked really hard on not getting ahead of ourselves and staying in the moment. I was on edge coming down the last few holes but it all worked out,” said a delighted Broomhead.

VORSTER CLAIMS EMPHATIC VICTORY IN BIG EASY FINAL

Parys Golf and Country Club member, Leon Vorster overturned a two-shot deficit to win The Final of the Altron Big Easy Tour by four on 13-under-par 203 at Blue Valley Golf and Country Estate.

Not only did Vorster’s victory hand him his maiden Altron Big Easy Tour title, but it also earned him and the other top 11 players on the Order of Merit their Sunshine Tour playing privileges for next season. Vorster carded a final round 67 which was characterised by six birdies and a solitary drop en route to claiming the championship in Centurion.

“I played really well today,” said a delighted Vorster after his win. “I got off to a strong start and that helped with the momentum going forward. The front nine was very important for me to set myself up on the leaderboard. Then, I made some crucial par saves on the back nine and that really gave me some confidence to finish it off.

“Being confident in this game can take you a long way, especially for me. So, I think my attitude helped me a lot today.”

“You can’t put into words, the impact that Altron has made in our lives as professionals,” Vorster said. “The Big Easy is our way into the Sunshine Tour and to have a sponsor like Altron coming in to invest in us and our dreams is just wonderful. We have a full schedule where we play and don’t have to sit at home and it’s all thanks to such organisation and the Sunshine Tour.

“Personally, this win means a lot to me. There are so many people who are part of

this journey and for me to be able to win a tournament and to know I’m going to be playing on the Sunshine Tour again is exciting.

“My focus now will be on trying to keep my Sunshine Tour card and making a few cuts. But, I just want to get better at golf in general and now that I have an opportunity to compete against the best, it just feels amazing.”

Ricky Hendler, Jason Roets and Keegan Mclachlan had already secured their cards for next season ahead of this final tournament of the regular Big Easy season. Both Hendler and Roets finished within the top 12 on the standings and having already secured their cards even before this event

SEVENTEENTH

John Collier Annual Survey

ANNUAL RESULTS INDICATE FURTHER DECLINES IN COMPLIANCE BY GOLF CLUBS AND HOW TO TURN THIS AROUND

The seventeenth John Collier Annual Survey on environmental compliance, social responsibility, and good governance (ESG) has been published, and an electronic version has been sent to golf clubs in South Africa. For those of you who ‘missed’ it, you may catch up by visiting our website using this linkhttps://johncolliergolf.com/jcs-survey-17/

The survey focuses on evaluating golf clubs in terms of the three pillars of sustainable golf, and emphasises the relevance of the United Nations sustainable development goals (SDGs), in guiding golf clubs towards responsible and sustainable practices.

The main takeaways indicate that the compliance levels of golf clubs in South Africa have declined for the fourth year in a row, which shows a need for greater attention to be focussed on compliance with governance principles and ESG matters. The decline in compliance levels is across almost all of the ESG focus areas, such as environmental management planning, biodiversity, landscape and cultural heritage, water resource management, turf-grass management, waste management, and energy management. Furthermore, there are areas in respect of governance that need particular attention, and this is compounded by the ever-increasing promulgation of legislation and regulatory requirements, which impact on the day-to-day business of the golf industry.

There are several potential factors contributing to this decline, which include:

Lack of awareness: golf clubs may not be fully aware of the importance of compliance with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles and regulations.

Limited resources: golf clubs, especially smaller ones, may face resource constraints in terms of finances, staff,

and expertise.

Inadequate training and education: golf clubs may lack the necessary training and education on ESG principles and regulations, making it difficult for them to understand and implement the required compliance measures effectively.

Resistance to change: some golf clubs may be resistant to change, and may not see the value or benefits of implementing ESG practices.

Complexity of regulations: ESG regulations and principles can be complex and constantly evolving, and golf clubs may struggle to keep up with the changing requirements, leading to non-compliance.

Lack of enforcement: if there is a perception that non-compliance with ESG principles and regulations goes unpunished, or is not rigorously enforced, some golf clubs may be less motivated to prioritize compliance.

It is important to note that these are potential global factors, where there will be variances from club to club, but the reality is that compliance levels by South African golf clubs is declining.

The question is how to turn this around?

The Annual Survey makes two proposals. Firstly, golf clubs need to put greater pressure on GolfRSA, through their provincial unions, to provide leadership and direction in respect of the ESG and SDG principles, and secondly, golf clubs need to embrace the value of independent third-party review of their ESG practices.

If you have any queries, why not contact the John Collier Golf through our website at https://johncolliergolf.com/, or via email ajcollier@telkomsa.net?

KNOW YOUR GOLF CLUB’S GENERAL MANAGER

Gerhard Lombard- General ManagerElements Private Golf Reserve

How long have you been in the golf industry and what made you choose this career?

I have been very fortunate to be introduced to golf from a very young age. My parents were eager golfers residing in Tzaneen where I originate from. Played junior and senior provincial golf for Northern Transvaal (now Gauteng North) and after finishing my studies at the University of Pretoria and completing my SA National Defense Force Service, moved back to Tzaneen where I got involved on the golf committee at Letaba District Country Club (now Tzaneen Country Club).

Being a golf club in the country area, you as a committee member must get involved in all aspects of running a golf club, from golf course maintenance, managing the Food & Beverage side of business to cleaning the clock rooms. Moving back to Pretoria in 2010 and joining Pretoria Country Club as a member, could not resist into getting involved in the club’s golf committee as well as being the club representative on the Gauteng North Golf Association’s executive committee. The sport and the management thereof, has always been an interest of mine hence the further

involvement in the golf club industry.

You were the GM at a course in Gauteng before moving to Elements, what are the big differences in the running of a Bushveld golf course and estate as opposed to one in Gauteng?

The golf facilities in Gauteng are busy every day of the week with a lot more corporate golf days and functions during the weekdays. The traditional members’ golf days are always well attended and the weekly competitions are very competitive among the members. The facilities in the country areas are traditional weekend breakaways with busy periods over the weekends. Being remotely, all perishables and other products must be sourced from the nearest local town which is not always easy. Equipment breakdowns and repairs and delays thereof, could lead to situations where the detail attention to the golf course is not maintained on a daily basis.

What are your biggest challenges currently at Elements GC?

Security on the Reserve will always be a high priority, not forgetting the management of the water resources. Being in the Waterberg

www.sagolftrader.co.za May | June 2024 30

region, an area known for its electrical storms during the rainy season, the power supply from Eskom is not always reliable during such a storm. We are all aware of the other issues with Eskom and power supply hence the ongoing investigations into the alternate power supply programs.

Has golf grown in your opinion over the last 3 years?

Yes, for sure. In conversations with other club managers in Limpopo and comparing the golf and golf cart rounds, all are of the opinion that there has an increase in golf in general.

With consumers already being careful on how they spend their money these days, what is your plan to attract people to the club?

We, as the club managers, must create an unforgettable golfing experience for our guests for them to prioritize their spending money, to return to such a facility. This experience extends to visits to facilities like Elements Private Golf Reserve, a venue in the Waterberg region, a traditional South African bushveld golf course and housing facility.

The game on the golf course must cause some headaches every now and then, how do you manage this at Elements?

We must all remember that the game on the reserve has always been there long before we arrived. They are part of the natural environment, and we must live with that. Yes, some days they go wild on the greens but through the maintenance practices of the greenkeeping staff, we manage to “fix” the problem areas to present to the golfers on the golf course.

The members of a golf club always come first. Do you agree with the phrase “The member is always right”?

Without the members of a facility and not forgetting the visitors on a daily basis, a club/ facility will have difficulty surviving. Yes, members can and may be demanding, but each too its own.

What are your short & long term goals?

Create an unforgettable experience to all visitors when residing or golfing on the reserve. Keeping the SA Top100 Golf Course current rating in the back of the mind when enjoying this wonderful facility with family and friends.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Family time and getting outdoors.

Do you still get time to play?

Sad to say, working and living on a golf estate/ reserve, creates the venue, but work comes first and unfortunately golf is left behind.

MAGICAL MANON WINS INVESTEC SA WOMEN’S OPEN

Belgium’s Manon De Roey put the finishing touch to another remarkable Sunshine Ladies Tour season when she claimed a four-stroke victory in the Investec South African Women’s Open at the Erinvale Country and Golf Estate.

De Roey went into the final round with a three-stroke lead and built on this as she eventually signed for a closing 72 to win on 14 under par overall.

“I’m super happy with my performance this week. I had a couple of goals at the beginning of this year and one of them was to win again,” said De Roey, who

claimed her first victory on the Sunshine Ladies Tour and her second on the Ladies European Tour.

England’s Gabriella Cowley, who shared second place on 10 under par alongside New Zealand’s Momoka Kobori, was crowned as the Sunshine Ladies Tour’s overall Investec Order of Merit champion and received R200 000 courtesy of Investec.

under par. This also secured her second place on the Investec Order of Merit and, as the leading South African here, she won herself a Renault for the year.

On Sunday, De Roey relished the challenge of another windy day in the winelands and was never under any pressure from the rest of the field as she cruised to victory.

“I like playing in windy conditions because I feel like I can shape the ball well. I can just let the wind do the work and I feel a bit more relaxed,” she said.

South Africa’s Garcia was equally delighted with her finish after putting in a strong performance on the weekend which included her third round of 64 and

then Sunday’s 71 to secure her a top-five finish in this event as well as the title of leading South African on the Investec Order of Merit.

“It was a bit of a surprise to find that out when I walked off the 18th green. I hadn’t really realised that it was a possibility. I’m going to enjoy my Renault for the year. But I’m happy with my performance overall, and this is a great added bonus,” she said.

It was also a lucrative final round for France’s Emma Grechi. Grechi scored an albatross on the par-five 16th and won R500 000 courtesy of Renault.

The Investec South African Women’s Open was the grand finale on this season’s eight-tournament Sunshine Ladies Tour.

GOLF ON THE GARDEN

The Garden Route, a stretch of the south-western coast of South Africa, extending from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to the Storms River in the Eastern Cape, derives its name from the fertile and ecologically diverse vegetation encountered there and the abundant lagoons and lakes that are dotted along the coast.

This stretch has a moderate climate, with mild to warm summers, and mild to cool winters. Temperatures seldom fall below 10 °C in winter and infrequently climb beyond 28 °C in summer. Rain follows year-round, with a slight peak in the spring months, brought on by the humid sea-winds from the Indian Ocean. Along the way, every kind of adventure activity is possible, scuba diving, abseiling, fishing and more. The Tsitsikamma National Park, perched on a unrestrained Indian Ocean shore is one of South Africa’s most dramatic protected areas, combining marine and land attractions. Its indigenous forests are a haven for birdlife.

The Garden Route is very popular with overseas visitors in the summer months and the numerous golf courses on the route are busy during this period. Things slow down a bit in the winter however and this is when excellent deals can be found. The weather is as good if not better and the golf courses are always in great condition. The strip map contains links to all the golf courses, contact them directly to see what winter specials they are offering or have a look at their respective advertisements. Summer or winter one thing is sure; the Garden Route is a dream destination for those wanting to play golf!

Q A

WITH PIETIE BOTHA

Golf course superintendent George Golf Club

When did you realise that turf management was the industry you want to take further?

In 2006, under the tutelage of Phillip Basson, I embarked on a journey into turf management that would shape my career for years to come. Over the next eight years, I worked on a variety of projects across the Western Cape, from constructing Kingswood GE to undertaking repair work at prestigious clubs like Fancourt and Knysna GC. These experiences not only honed my skills but also fueled my passion for turf management.

What is the best and worst part of being a golf course superintendent?

Being a golf course superintendent offers the joy of daily immersion in nature’s beauty, maintaining serene landscapes. Yet, it’s a role fraught with challenges like weather woes and pest invasions. Despite this, the dynamism and satisfaction derived from overcoming obstacles and delivering impeccable golfing experiences make it truly unparalleled.

You are at George GC, a course not too far from the coast, does the coastal weather influence you at George GC?

At George GC, coastal weather’s sway is pronounced, with rapid shifts and dual seasons in a day. Turf management battles diseases and stress from temperature swings, demanding vigilance and proactive adjustments. The superintendent and team diligently preserve the course’s health, ensuring golfers relish its pristine allure despite coastal whims.

What are your biggest challenges in maintaining such a high ranked golf course?

Balancing the demands of maintaining a high-ranked golf course like George GC with accommodating the flow of players presents a significant challenge. Maximizing course quality while minimizing disruptions requires meticulous planning and efficient execution, ensuring both course excellence and player satisfaction are upheld simultaneously.

What are the differences in grasses (fairway, rough, greens) at George GC to other parts of the country?

George GC differs from other parts of the country in its grass types. It predominantly features Kikuyu on tees and greens, with a mix of Triple Seven and Dominator Bent grass on the greens. The rough comprises a blend of rye and fescue grass, tailored to the unique coastal climate and soil conditions.

Does one need different machinery on course for different types of grasses around the country?

Yes, different grass types necessitate varied machinery for maintenance across the country. At George GC, cylinder cutting units are employed for precise mowing on greens, tees, and fairways,

www.sagolftrader.co.za May | June 2024 52 SPECIAL FEATURE - ALL ABOUT GREENKEEPING

while rotary units are utilized in the rough to manage thicker vegetation effectively, ensuring optimal turf health and presentation.

How big a difference does climate and location play in golf course maintenance?

Climate and location significantly impact golf course maintenance. In the Southern Cape, where George GC is located, the higher rainfall compared to inland areas necessitates tailored maintenance practices. Adjustments in irrigation, drainage, and pest management are vital to ensure optimal turf health and playing conditions, reflecting the local climate’s influence.

To what extent does course setup affect slow play, and how do you deal with it?

Course setup plays a crucial role in influencing the pace of play on a golf course. Strategic placement of hazards, tee box positioning, and green speeds can impact the flow of the game. To manage slow play, marshals are deployed to monitor and encourage players to maintain an appropriate pace throughout the round.

Do you think it should be mandatory for each golf courses to close one day per week for maintenance?

Balancing course maintenance and uninterrupted play is crucial for golf course sustainability. While weekly closures optimize conditions, economic concerns and player convenience must be considered. Proactive scheduling during off-peak times and clear communication with patrons on upkeep’s significance help strike a balance, fostering industry sustainability and growth.

Do maintenance staff ever come into conflict with golfers and how do you deal with this?

Occasional conflicts between maintenance staff and golfers may arise, but mutual respect and understanding are paramount. Clear communication about maintenance schedules and courteous interactions can defuse tensions. Additionally, ensuring all staff are versed in golf etiquette helps maintain harmony between course operations and player enjoyment.

How important is it for golfers to repair their divots and pitch marks immediately vs only a couple of days or week later?

Repairing divots and pitch marks immediately is crucial for golf course maintenance. Prompt repair facilitates faster turf recovery, minimizing damage and maintaining course quality. Neglecting repairs delays healing and can result in lasting blemishes on the course, impacting playability for all golfers.

People always complain about inconsistent bunkers, how difficult is it to maintain consistent bunkers and do you implement general checks and how?

Maintaining consistent bunkers is a challenge, but at George GC, we prioritize regular maintenance. Daily raking ensures even sand distribution, while periodic loosening prevents compaction and maintains playability. Additionally, routine inspections allow us to address any issues promptly, ensuring all bunkers meet our standards for consistency and quality.

NELLY KORDA TIES LPGA RECORD WITH FIFTH STRAIGHT VICTORY, WINS THE CHEVRON CHAMPIONSHIP

Nelly Korda couldn’t have imagined the incredible run she’s put together this season while at home recovering from a blood clot that required surgery in 2022.

“Because obviously then I was just more scared for my health,” she said. “Competing was kind of on the back seat. I was not thinking about competing at all. But I think all of the sad times and the health scares that I have gone through have made me who I am today.”

Fully healthy now, Korda is seemingly unstoppable. The world’s No. 1 player hasn’t

Korda etched her name in the LPGA record books last month, winning her record-tying fifth straight tournament with a two-stroke victory in The Chevron Championship.

Korda joins Nancy Lopez (1978) and Annika Sorenstam (2004-05) as the only players to win five consecutive LPGA events. Her previous major victory was in 2021 at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

TIGER WOODS ACCEPTS SPECIAL EXEMPTION INTO 124TH U.S. OPEN

Nine-time USGA champion to make his 23rd U.S. Open appearance at Pinehurst.

Tiger Woods has accepted a special exemption by the United States Golf Association to play the 124th U.S. Open.

Woods will make his 23rd start at the U.S. Open, third at Pinehurst No. 2 and first since 2020 at Winged Foot GC It’s the first time in Woods’ career that he didn’t qualify for the U.S. Open on his own merit. Woods’ five-year major championship exemption for winning the 2019 Masters ran out earlier this year.

“The U.S. Open, our national championship, is a truly special event for our game and

one that has helped define my career,” said Woods. “I’m honored to receive this exemption and could not be more excited for the opportunity to compete in this year’s U.S. Open, especially at Pinehurst, a venue that means so much to the game.”

“The story of the U.S. Open could not be written without Tiger Woods,” said USGA Chief Championships Officer John Bodenhamer.

“From his 15-stroke victory at Pebble Beach in 2000 to his inspiring win on a broken leg at Torrey Pines in 2008, this championship is simply better when Tiger is in the field, and his accomplishments in the game undoubtedly made this an easy decision for our special exemption committee.”

Whatever happened

Next up in our series on South African golfing greats from the past is Roger Wessels. We chatted to Roger and asked him how it all began, to tell us more about his illustrious career and what he is up to these days.

“I was born in Port Elizabeth to parents who loved the outdoors and I remember many a day spent playing games in the parks or on the beach. My father was a keen sportsman and I was 5 years old when the golfing bug bit him and it wasn’t long after he started playing that I got my first club…a cut down 5 iron. That 5 iron and I spent many hours together and I slowly learned different skills which was just as well because there were a few broken windows during the learning phase.

“The family moved up to Krugersdorp when I was 10 years old where we were able to join the wonderful family orientated Krugersdorp Golf Club. The club had a rule for juniors that right from the outset stimulated my competitive side; if a junior could play to a handicap less than an 18 then they became eligible to play the competition on a Saturday afternoon. I was barely 11 when I hit this milestone and my love for the game grew playing with the adult members who taught me the rules, etiquette, integrity, sportsmanship and nurtured my competitive spirit.

I was thoroughly enjoying my job at the club when an opportunity to open the KeNako Golf Academy in George became available. CALDERON LEADS TOP 25 Q SCHOOL GRADUATES

Chile’s Matias Calderon won the Sunshine Tour Qualifying School at the Heron Banks Golf and River Estate last month to continue his love with South African golf.

Calderon won the 2018 Eye of Africa PGA Championship, making him the first golfer from Chile to win one of South Africa’s oldest and most prestigious titles.

Calderon and England’s Jake Bolton finished the regulation 72 holes tied for the lead on eight under par following respective final rounds of 68 and 65. Calderon then won with a par on the first playoff hole.

“First and foremost, I’m just happy to have secured my Sunshine Tour card. That’s the main objective of the week. But coming down the final stretch I wanted to get the best result that I could, and fortunately for me that was a win,” said Calderon.

“I came to South Africa when I just turned professional and I’ve been around for a few years now. There are very good tournaments here on the Sunshine Tour and the people are very friendly. Overall the organisation of tournaments on the

Ingredients

·1 tablespoon vegetable oil

·1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger

·1 tablespoon fresh garlic

·½ onion

·1 stalk lemongrass (minced)

·3 cans (small) coconut milk

Method

·2 cans cooking cream

·1 tablespoon red curry paste

·4 cups chicken stock

(you may substitute with chicken stock powder)

·2 red peppers, finely diced

·1 teaspoon Hondashi (to taste)

·500g king prawns

. Start by sweating the onion in a hot pot with the oil, then add ginger & garlic. When the onion is almost translucent, add the red curry paste, then stir in the lemongrass and the peppers. Cook for a while.

2. At this stage, add the prawns. You may add any other seafood pieces you like: at the Fig Tree, we add calamari and mussels. The prawns are a must, though! (A resident shared that they had used lobster and it came out great). If you are adding calamari, note that we grill it separately and add into the soup just before we serve. Prawns and mussels are braised in the soup.

3. Add the chicken stock (I actually prefer the chicken stock powder). Pour your coconut milk in just about the same time as the cooking cream. Then, let the soup simmer This must be done before your prawns are fully cooked. These need to cook in the cream so all the flavour is released fully.

4. Add Hondashi to taste, as the soup simmers. This is the secret ingredient in this soup.

5. Finish off with grated parmesan (optional). This will help you achieve a beautiful, thick consistency

Chef G's Tips:

· Salt is not necessar , as Hondashi is alread q ite salt

· The meas rements here are simpl a g ideline. As o cook the so p, taste it to adj st according to o r preference. For e ample, the red c rr paste and lemongrass gi es the so p a gentle “s ng ”. When o add these ingredients, taste to ens re the heat is to o r liking. If o find the so p too hot, add a bit more cream. If o ant to increase the heat, add in more c rr paste.

GOLFRSA JUNIORS DOUBLE UP IN ZIMBABWE JUNIOR

Devon Valentine and Charlotte Millard showcased remarkable skill and composure to defend their titles at the First Capital Bank Zimbabwe Junior Open in Harare in April.

The GolfRSA National Squad duo broke through on the international stage in their debut appearances in the event hosted by the Zimbabwe Junior Golf Association at Borrowdale Brooke Golf Estate.

This year Valentine came under pressure again in a tough-scoring final round from fellow squad member Johndre Ludick, but the Eastern Province teenager held his nerve to clinch a two-stroke victory on seven-under 209.

Valentine, who lagged three off the pace after an opening one-under-par 71, produced an impressive bogey-free seven-under 65 on his 18th birthday to vault into the second-round lead. He

was three shots clear of fellow South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) player Mitch Phigeland, with Ludick a further shot adrift.

After a birdie-birdie start, Valentine made amends for a bogey at the third with a birdie on the par-4 fourth, but he dropped a further three shots in his first three holes after turning on two under. He stemmed the bleeding with a birdie on the short 13th and, after bogeys on the 15th and 17th, he finished in style with a birdie to secure the win with a final-round 73.

“I wouldn’t say it was any easier to win this year, but I’m really proud that I got the job done,” said Valentine. “The conditions were tough in the final round, and the pressure was on from Johndre. I just stayed in the moment and shrugged off the bogeys, and that was key to the win. I’m very grateful to GolfRSA for the opportunity and proud that I could step up and validate the trust they put in me.”

Meanwhile, Millard also made a slow start and began the final round three strokes behind pacesetter Sebata on one under.

The Central Gauteng player charged into the lead with a trio of birdies on the outward nine, but she opened the door for compatriot Olivia Wood with three bogeys coming home. Millard set the clubhouse target on two-over 218 with a 72, but KwaZulu-Natal’s Wood birdied the closing hole for 73 to force a play-off.

Millard saved her best for the second trip down the 18th and boxed a birdie

putt to close the door on Wood.

“I made it a lot tougher on myself this year,” said the delighted Millard. “It’s such a great tournament; it’s very well organised and the course is a proper challenge. Olivia and Phenyo played some incredible golf, and I had to dig really deep to pull it through. It’s an honour to be the champion in successive years, and to do South Africa proud on the world stage.”

GolfRSA CEO Grant Hepburn applauded the champions and competitors.

“We are extremely proud of Devon and Charlotte,” he said. “It is especially impressive considering the level of competition from 10 different countries. Their victories not only highlight their individual talent but also speak volumes about the strength of South Africa’s junior golf programme.

It is also commendable that the GolfRSA Junior Team performed so well overall, with eight out of 12 players finishing in the top 20. Such experiences undoubtedly contribute significantly to their growth and development as players. It’s wonderful to see initiatives like the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture grant supporting these young athletes in gaining international exposure and honing their skills. Kudos to all involved, including the organisers and hosts, for making the tournament a success.”

MAIDEN WIN FOR GORLEI WITH JABRA LADIES CLASSIC TITLE

Your first professional win is always a momentous occasion, and even for someone who has achieved as much as Cara Gorlei has, it was a special day at Glendower Golf Club as she claimed the Jabra Ladies Classic title for her maiden triumph.

In the four years that Gorlei has been a pro, she had racked up 11 top-10 finishes and earned more than R600 000 in prizemoney and has also qualified for the Ladies European Tour, before sealing the deal and getting her hands on the trophy by a stroke at Glendower.

bogey on the 18th all the more palatable.

She still posted her third successive 68 to finish on 12-under-par, one ahead of Pettersson, who shot an outstanding 67 to finish on 11-under.

“I was trying not to think about the lead, until the 11th, when I started to get a bit nervous. My first win started to play on my mind a little bit and then on 13 I saw on a leaderboard that Lisa Pettersson was right up there with me,” Gorlei said.

Gorlei was lying second, two shots behind at the start of the final round, and she kept herself in the conversation throughout, even as Stacy Bregman, Moa Folke, Gabriella Cowley and Lisa Pettersson all made a charge, while overnight leader Maiken Bing Paulsen also stayed in contention.

A bogey at the par-three sixth meant the 28-year-old Gorlei was level-par for her round. But she immediately followed that up with birdies on the seventh and eighth holes. Others faltered as Gorlei reached the turn and the pressure of the situation brought out the best in the Capetonian as she was inspired on the back nine. Three birdies in four holes from the 11th put her in front and she reached the last hole with a two-shot lead, making her

“But it just made me focus harder because I realised it was not done yet. I knew I was playing well enough and I just stuck to my routines. Obviously it’s awesome to get the win done and I am really happy that I stayed level-headed.

“I’ve been in two playoffs and lost them both, so it was nice to get the monkey off my back without having to go to another playoff. I have my first pro win and now I can start going,” Gorlei beamed.

In a sign of her mental maturity, Gorlei realised that she may not have had her A-game with her on Friday, so she settled into

Umkomaas golf course was first constructed, as a 9-hole layout, in 1913 but was expanded to 18 holes in 1926. In 1932 reknown course designer Robert "Bob" Grimsdell re-designed the course, capitalising on the natural contours of the land and taking advantage of the glorious sea views - in fact, most holes offer great views of the warm Indian ocean. The course layout has remained largely unchanged and as a result, one of Umkomaas' unique features are the raised greens, thanks to over 100 years of top-dressings and treatments.

Although not overly long, the course offers a great challenge for low handicappers, especially when the coastal winds blow. It is however forgiving for even an occasional golfer making it the perfect option for families and groups. Well placed bunkers and undulating fairways mean that those seeking to card a low round need to think their way around the course whilst those looking to simply have fun will enjoy themselves too.

Umkomaas is a great choice for those wanting to get the whole family out into the fresh air. We offer exceptional family membership packages and the opportunity to learn to play via our KidzGolf programme

a prudent approach.

“I struggled a bit off the tee today, which made it quite tough. My game was not in the right place for me to play aggressively; I enjoy playing that way, I like to chase and sneak in from behind, but today I was pretty conservative.

“Different parts of my game showed up at different times. At times my putting really saved me, down the stretch my irons were pretty solid, but they weren’t on the front nine. So it was a little bit of everything that came together,” Gorlei said.

While Pettersson’s 67 was bogey-free as she charged up the leaderboard from four shots off the pace, the other contenders made

costly errors.

Folke reached the turn in four-under and was leading, but three bogeys in a row from the 11thmeant her challenge faded and the Swede finished fourth on nine-under-par after a 69.

Bregman also went through the front nine in 32, but bogeys on the par-four 11th and par-three 14th saw her fall four strokes short in a tie for fifth on eight-under.

Paulsen, who led after the first and second rounds, was level-par on Friday through eight holes, but she then dropped four strokes to also finish on eight-under, alongside Bregman and Nina Pegova (69).

Cowley was five-under through 13 holes, but then a bogey at the par-five 15th saw her end in third place on 10-under-par.

SIMON PLANS AHEAD FOLLOWING VUSI

NGUBENI TRIUMPH

Thabang Simon couldn’t hide his happiness following his hard-fought victory in the Altron Vusi Ngubeni Tournament which guaranteed him and 12 others playing privileges in the upcoming season of the Sunshine Tour.

The Soweto Country Club player had it all to do in the final round as Thanda Mavundla, Thabiso Ngcobo and Slenda Sithebe, among others, were piling the pressure. In the end, however, his final-round 69 took his tournament total to 17-under and handed him a one-stroke win over Mavundla.

“It was very tough, I’m telling you,” said Simon. “The guys wanted to win it too but I stayed focused and reminded myself that I know what’s my number. I told myself that I needed to get it to 18-under and I’ll be okay, but 17-under is still fine with me. But I am so happy to finally get it done. It’s been a long time since I won at ERPM.

“This is a very important week for most of us here and it was always going to be tough. But, I always play the golf

How well would your car function without regular servicing? (the same principle applies to your golf course)

The disease outbreaks in the past few months are a good reminder of how important your cultural practises, nutrition & sound IPM are.

Cultural practises:

Spike (6mm) & dust every 21 days from Sept to April (in your growing season) – this allows oxygen exchange, protect the crown of the plant against disease & creates a firm smooth playing surface

Hollow-tyning twice a year with a 12mm tyne & backfilling with USGA construction sand (not maintenance sand) is really important to keep your greens draining & functioning well. If your greens were not build with USGA sand then use the closest match you can find. Consol have a mine in the Cape & KZN & Greens Sands

in the Gauteng/Mpumalanga region. I have worked closely with Thomas Turf laboratories in the USGA since 1999 & they are brilliant at physical sand testing. Giving you a report on how your green is functioning & which topdressing sand matches your profile.

Eliminate the guess work, take the pain of spring & autumn treatment to produce your ultimate playing surface.

Nutrition:

Plants do not like a roller coaster ride on nutrition.

Greens – test at least 3 greens every 6 months – I like the Talking Turf test I have done with Labserve since 1997.

When I started as a superintendent the fertilizer reps would come & visit me at Leopard Creek & when a gentleman told me “maar op die piesangs” I decided to pursue my passion & study soils to ensure I make sound decisions.

Feel free to send pa@talkingturf.co.za or willem@ talkingturf.co.za your latest soil results on greens (test 3 every 6 months), tees & fairways (test 3 annually)

Integrated Pest Management

When a patent expires on a product the opposition have access to the active ingredient, but not the formulation,

which is ultimately which makes the product available to the plant. I have worked closely with Syngenta on their turf range since my internship at Pebble Beach in 1996.

Their commitment to R & D as well as the environment are what made me choose this company. The Syngenta Turf fungicides available from Talking Turf in Southern Africa will not kill your beneficial microbes or insects. We need to protect the good guys – take care of the soil & it will take care of you.

Plan & Protect – we draw up detailed pest management programmes for every turf type & region of South Africa to ensure your soil is healthy & that you are not caught off guard. By the time you see the symptoms on the surface you are in the eradicant stage of the life cycle – it is very costly & tough to control a disease at this point.

Nematode testing should also be done annually & once again please do not use Nemacur & wipe out all your beneficial nematodes & microbes. You need your microbes to break down your organic matter & aerate your soil. Dr. Mieke Daneel, a world renown nematologist, which understands turf (one of the few in the world) does testing & recommendations. We are presenting a paper on nematodes in Japan in 2025 and you are welcome to join the study at no cost –mieke@arc.agric.co.za

At 49, Simon is no youngster and is fully aware of this. He admits that he still has enough in him to compete at the highest level but knows he will have to start thinking about the senior circuit at some point soon.

“I had a look at the entry list before we came here and some of these guys are really young. But, what impressed me the most is just the strength of this year’s Vusi field. DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH: FORMER GOLF LEGENDS HELP SA YOUTH TAKE A SWING AT SUCCESS

Participating in sports, especially the beautiful game of golf, can be an incredibly rewarding experience for young people. For developing bodies and minds, golf is particularly good for building strength and endurance, teaching important skills and lessons, like concentration, how to manage emotions, and the thrill of working towards a goal.

“Unfortunately, golf can be an expensive sport to play,” says Nico Van Rensburg, a seasoned Coach and South African golfing legend with nine world championship wins under his belt. “We have numerous young golfing diamonds

in the rough in South Africa waiting to be discovered. They deserve a chance to pursue the sport they love and make their dreams come true.”

As the Commercial Manager for the Ernie Els Group and having coached some of the world’s best players, including the ‘Big Easy’ himself, Van Rensburg is committed to making golf more accessible to young deserving players across the country.
