East Hampton Crime Is Low Chief says rates are the best in past five years.

IMPERFECT, BUT HAS POTENTIAL BY CHRISTINE SAMPSON

THE MAIDEN RUN of the South Fork Commuter Connection went off as planned Monday morning despite snow, sleet and slush — and some confusion. When the train that would be the 6:16 a.m. eastbound South Fork trip rolled into Speonk, a handful of westbound travelers approached the doors, wondering if their 6:20 a.m. ride was early. Eventually, that familiar, automated Long Island Rail Road voice began its “this is the train to…”

Commuter Connection debuts to optimism announcement, clearing up the uncertainty. According to a Southampton Town news release, on Monday, 15 passengers rode the 6:16 a.m. Speonk train and 12 passengers rode the 8:26 a.m. Hampton Bays train. Ridership data for subsequent days were not available by press time Wednesday. There was some confusion over how

to purchase South Fork Commuter Connection tickets. Using the ticket machine at the station, some bought a standard higher-priced eastbound ticket, which did not include a transfer ticket for the town-sponsored “Last Mile” shuttle buses. Others skipped buying a ticket in advance, opting to try buying it on the train, because long lines at the ticket machine might have meant missing the train altogether. It turned out the $4.25 one-way

DEAL DOUBTFUL UNTIL A REVIEW

IT WASN’T EXACTLY A PLEDGE but Supervisor Peter Van Scoyoc did tell a record crowd at the Wainscott Citizens Advisory Committee’s meeting on Saturday that he doubted the Town of East Hampton would allow the transmission cable for the proposed South Fork Wind Farm to come ashore at Beach Lane until a full “Article 7” review of the overall project is completed by the New York State Public Service Commission.

GILLIAN GORDON’S first summer job as a teen was working in the box office at Guild Hall, a position that gave her the opportunity to meet artists of all varieties and interact with patrons at East Hampton’s hub for arts and culture. This summer, the Springs resident will take control of a different box office, although with a few more responsibilities behind her title. Ms. Gordon was appointed this week as the first executive director of the Sag Harbor Cinema Arts Center. WHAT ONE COUNTY PARKS OFFICIAL HAS DUBBED “the nicest kiosk we have in all of the Suffolk County park system” is in place overlooking the beach at the head of the trail to the old lighthouse at Cedar Point Park. Finished in November, the kiosk and new cedar markers along the restored sandy path, which was washed away by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, are all ready for spring’s hikers, thanks to Sag Harbor’s Boy Scout Troop 455 and its newest Eagle Scout, Tristan Remkus of North Haven. Tristan, who will be graduating from Pierson High School this spring and working as a mechanic at the Sag Harbor Cycle Co. this summer, before heading to Clarkson University in the fall to study environmental engineering, oversaw the funding,

I fell in love on Hampton Jitney “I was taking the Jitney home from Bridgehampton one summer day in July and there were only a few seats left on the bus. I see this pretty girl sitting by herself with all of her bags on the seat. I sat next to her. That was basically our first date. Three years later I proposed with the help of Hampton Jitney.”
