Eliot Smith Dance returns to Sage Gateshead with two exciting new contemporary dance works in a double bill. From award-winning South Asian choreographer Balbir Singh comes I am not an Indian Dancer and includes On Red Kites, which is the result of Eliot Smith’s observations and creative interpretation of one of Britain’s rarest and most spectacular birds - the red kite. The work is set to Brahms Violin Sonata No 3 in D minor played by Kyra Humphreys of Royal Northern Sinfonia.

As we approach a new decade, we want to make sure you end 2019 on a musical high! Sage Gateshead will be packed full of Christmas concerts and family festivities in the run up to 2020 so make sure you get them on your calendar now before the season sneaks up on you. Time for a deep breath and here’s what we’ve got coming up… Festive favourite headliners include The Overtones, Cara Dillon, Kate Rusby, Jez Lowe and the Folkworks Christmas Ceilidh. Folk powerhouse The Demon Barbers bring their family-friendly ‘Lock In Christmas Carol’ back by popular demand on December 11. Made up of a BBC award-winning team of musicians and dancers, it’s part gig, part dance show and part panto! The legendary Ronnie Spector and the Ronettes will be spreading holiday cheer with their ‘Best Christmas Party Ever!’ on December 20. And after sell-out performances in 2017 and 2018, A Jazzy Christmas returns to Sage Gateshead on December 21, including a family show at 2pm. For families we also have The Snowman (22 - 24 December) - a highlight of the year - where Royal Northern Sinfonia play the iconic film score live while the magical film is shown on a big screen in our main concert hall, Sage One. If you can’t wait until then, RNS will be performing John Williams’s Academy-Award-winning E.T. score while this movie masterpiece plays on December 1 (3pm and 7.30pm).

Virtuoso chamber choir The Sixteen celebrate their 40th anniversary with a Christmas musical celebration that includes Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols, guaranteed to make your hairs stand on end in the stunning acoustic surroundings of Sage One (6 December). Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without Handel’s Messiah, featuring RNS and this year conducted by Jeanette Sorrell on December 14. If it’s something a bit different you’re after, then join some superstars of the orchestral world for a no-holds-barred musical cocktail of classical, jazz, Latin, improv and pop with Philharmonix on December 17. Or be whisked away by RNS and leading musical theatre soloists to Christmas on Broadway on December 19. If you’re unable to hear RNS at their Sage Gateshead home, then look out for them in the region’s most beautiful churches on their Christmas by Candlelight tour at the beginning of December. To keep the Christmas magic alive, we have the Big Family Festive Fun! on December 28 (11am, 1pm and 2.30pm). Magenta Singers Every Monday afternoon at Sage Gateshead, an extraordinary group of people come together to sing in a choir. Many of the participants struggle with their speech and some have mobility issues, they all have two things in common; a condition called acquired aphasia and a love of singing.

Acquired aphasia is often the outcome of a stroke or brain injury, and can result in communication difficulties including speaking, understanding, writing and reading. Sage Gateshead’s choir, Magenta Singers, is for people of any age who have acquired aphasia and it is run in association with the North East Trust for Aphasia Support Centre in Newcastle. Lindsey, from Sunderland, used to be a music teacher and 9 years ago she suffered a brain haemorrhage caused by a ruptured aneurysm and spent several months in hospital. She has been coming to the choir every week. “By coming to the classes my music range has increased and it gives me a way of communicating. If it hadn’t been for the choir, I wouldn’t be able to sing and I’ve always loved singing.” Kerry Green, choir leader, said: “Aphasia can be a result of damage to one side of the brain, usually the left, which controls our words and language system, but our melodic music centre is stored on our right side. People who struggle to form words find they can often sing the words to familiar songs, as the words are carried along by the melody through a different brain route. This does not transfer into improved speech, but it does give the person some respite from the struggle to utter words.”

During our sessions we sing a wide range of songs including pop, blues and folk, and everything from the Beatles to songs from the musicals and develop vocal skills and breathing. It’s a friendly and supportive group and the atmosphere is really uplifting. No previous singing experience is necessary.” Julie, from Whitley Bay, also attends the choir every week. After a stroke 4 years ago she couldn’t speak or walk and lost a lot of confidence. “It impacted on my ability to do everyday activities. You feel isolated, but this class makes you feel good and the ripple effect is huge. It’s has given me a lot of confidence and independence. I now live on my own and travel by bus or metro each week to the choir. I sing much more at home now too - and when doing the housework.” Group members and their families have become good friends and they often socialise outside of the class as well as providing peer support. “None of the people in this choir imagined they’d be as good as they are. It’s great seeing the group realise that even though they sometimes find conversation challenging, singing songs can really help express themselves” added Kerry. The Magenta Singers meet every Monday during term time, 1.30-3pm.

Messiah
