Make Music

Welcome Playing an instrument or singing in a choir is not only fun and rewarding but it makes you feel good, has a multitude of long-term health benefits, is a great way to meet new people and can help fulfil that lifelong dream of playing in a band! We run many different classes each week from absolute beginners to advanced. There’s also our specialised folk classes and our Silver Programme for people over the age of 50. For many of our classes there’s no need for musical knowledge, no auditions and no pressure. With so much to choose from, there’s bound to be something that’s just right for you. If you’re not sure where to start, or can’t commit to a termly class, look out for our regular Come and Try Days and one-off workshops throughout the year. Enrol now, meet other budding musicians and begin or continue your musical journey, whatever your chosen instrument or style.

Singing ALL

Singing Stellas Saturday 11am-1pm

Develop your vocal skills and harmonies singing a wide variety of musical styles in this all female singing group. Cost: ÂŁ3.50 per session


Find Your Voice Wednesday 7-8.30pm

A group singing lesson which focuses on developing healthy technique from the start; an introduction to the voice, singing simple harmonies, learning about your range and explaining sheet music.


Chamber Choir Monday 7-9pm

This group rehearses a broad and exciting repertoire and performs both in the building and around the region. You will need to be able to read music and hold a line in harmony. Applicants are invited for an informal audition.


Blue Jazz Voices Monday 7-9pm

Focusing on improvisation and vocal technique within jazz and blues, this class helps to develop a practical approach to solo singing and performance.



Thursday 7-9pm

Learn a repertoire of different musical genres including gospel, reggae, pop and folk from around the world.


Sage Singers Thursday 7.30-9.30pm

Gain an understanding of classical choral singing, develop your harmony singing, improve technique and sight-reading skills with the opportunity to perform. Some music reading skills are needed.

Monday 8-9pm For confident players, this is the next step in the ukulele journey.



Uke Folk Monday 6.30-8pm

This group will play folk songs predominantly from the folk revival, Celtic and Americana backgrounds.


Uke Troupe Wednesday 7-8.30pm

Develop your ukulele skills, technique and musicianship.


Themed Ukes Wednesday 8-9.30pm

Each term will explore a different theme. Previous themes have included Simon and Garfunkel, Buddy Holly and disco music.

Basic open chords and strumming knowledge required.


Intermediate Guitar

Intermediate Guitar: Next Steps

Monday 7.30-9pm Good open chord technique and some knowledge of barre chords required. Work on songs with riffs and soloing ideas using the minor pentatonic scales and develop rhythm and picking techniques.


Absolute Beginner AB Saxophone Thursday 6.15-7.15pm

Beginner Saxophone Thursday 7.15-8.45pm

Ideal for players who’ve attended the Absolute Beginner Saxophone class or have a basic knowledge of music notation. Develop your skills and experience playing with others.

Monday 6-7.30pm

Good open chord knowledge is required and you’ll be introduced to barre chords in depth.




Intermediate Saxophone

Thursday 6-7.15pm For players who’ve covered the basics, feel reasonably confident and want to develop their skills further.


Saxophonix Thursday 7.15-8.30pm

This exciting ensemble provides a fantastic opportunity to play sax with others. Grade 3-5+.

Wednesday 6-7.30pm

Learn techniques including riffing, soloing and playing in an ensemble.

This class focuses on preparing you to play music with others and learn new fiddle styles and tunes.

Learn advanced skills, extend your repertoire and gain the confidence and ability to play in sessions and performances.

A range of styles and techniques are introduced. Grow in confidence and learn to play in sessions and performances.

Absolute Beginner Northumbrian Pipes

Tuesday 7-8.15pm Pipes in G tuning are required for this class and are available to hire.



Intermediate & Advanced Northumbrian Pipes Tuesday 8.15-9.30pm

Extend your repertoire and improve your technique. This class plays in “Pipers F” pitch.

Beginner Northumbrian Pipes

Tuesday 7-8.15pm Improve your piping technique and establish a repertoire of popular Northumbrian piping tunes. ‘F’ pipes are required for this class.

Flute & Whistle B I

Beginner & Intermediate Flute & Whistle Tuesday 7-8.15pm

Increase your confidence and ability whilst learning traditional tunes and techniques.


Intermediate & Advanced Flute & Whistle Tuesday 8.15-9.30pm

Improve your technique and broaden your repertoire. Flautists can bring simple system or concert flutes and whistle players can bring low or high whistles, but they should be in D.

Bands B

New Tunes Tuesday 6-6.45pm

Learn new tunes every week in this drop-in session. For players of any instrument who want to build their repertoire. Players should be comfortably learning a tune in the space of one session.


Beginner & Intermediate Big Band Tuesday 8.15-9.30pm

All beginners are welcome in this band, regardless of experience or instrument played. Our tutor will take you through repertoire and arrangements. Melody players, chord players and percussionists are welcome.



Intermediate & Advanced Big Band Tuesday 7-8.15pm Learn to play as part of a folk band. This class is for players of any instrument and focuses on arrangements, performance styles and repertoire. Melody and chord players are welcome.


Folk Rock Band Tuesday 7-8.15pm

From the early Folk Revival to contemporary folk rockers, explore this broad genre as a band.


Ceilidh Band Tuesday 8.15-9.30pm

For melody players, chord players and percussionists who want to play for ceilidh dancing. Looking at specific dances, this classes focuses on how to support dances using lift, groove and rhythm.



Americana Band Tuesday 8.15-9.30pm

This class introduces participants to a wide range of Americana music. Suitable for all instruments, including melody and chord players.


North East Ensemble Tuesday 8.15-9.30pm Explore a wide range of North East traditional music and learn to play together as an ensemble.

Clogs ALL

Clog Class Tuesday 8.15-9.30pm

Learn the steps, styles and techniques of traditional clog dancing. This mixed ability class is suitable for all abilities including absolute beginner and experienced dancers. Tutors may split the class according to ability. A limited supply of clogs are available to hire.

Singing ALL

Folk Choir Tuesday 7-8.15pm

Sing folk and traditional music in 2-6 part harmonies. Songs are taught by ear and using sheet music, but no experience of reading music is necessary.


Big Band with Song Tuesday 8.15-9.30pm

This popular class welcomes both singers and instrumentalists who want to sing and play folk songs together.
