Join us for the new Classical Season 2019/20 Two bumper Beethoven Weekends, E.T. on the big screen with Royal Northern Sinfonia playing the score live, violin sensation Nicola Benedetti and children’s favourite Peter and the Wolf are just some of the highlights of our new 2019/20 classical season.

The season kicks off on September 14 with RNS Music Director Lars Vogt at the helm and taking to the piano to perform and direct Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No.2. The concert also features Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique Symphony, his sixth and final symphony into which he poured everything he had. The music is raw, pounding with emotion and packed with melody after glorious melody - a magnificent way to open the new season.

The Chorus of Royal Northern Sinfonia will be joined by a first-class team of soloists to belt out the blockbuster choruses of Haydn’s uplifting Creation on October 25. Or if it’s something a bit different and stripped back you’re after, then head over to the stunning surroundings of Wylam Brewery for our popular RNS @ Wylam series, which continues on September 18, featuring Philip Glass’s cult classic Symphony No.3.

Lars is our very own ‘Piano Great’ on September 20, bringing his profound and emotional approach to a beautiful recital of Mozart, Janáček, Liszt and Schubert. And young RNS fans are in for a treat when he shows them all there is to know about the piano in Classics 4 Kids on October 12.

Chorus in Conversation When Joseph Haydn turned his hand to the greatest story of all time - The Creation - his imagination simply bubbled over. Filled with sparkling melodies and blockbuster choruses, singing The Creation on October 25 will be a real treat for Chorus of Royal Northern Sinfonia. “I feel like a kid presented with a box of sweets whenever the programme for the new season is published,” said Simon Wood, bass, Chorus of Royal Northern Sinfonia. “The prospect of singing Haydn’s Creation for Paul McCreesh makes this my favourite ‘sweet’ in next season’s box.” Simon Wood, bass, Chorus of Royal Northern Sinfonia. The Chorus performs a broad range of music as part of the RNS family. It is made up of amateur musicians who work to professional standards and members are drawn from all walks of life, from across the North of England.

26

Alto, Doreen Middlemast, has been a member for 25 years. “Singing with Chorus of RNS has been a huge part of my life,” she said. “It is such a privilege to be involved in concerts when RNS are playing to their fabulously high standards of musicmaking. Singing for and with the best definitely makes you raise your game. “It has been especially joyful to sing in our home of Sage Gateshead with its fabulous acoustics in both Sage One and Two.” Sage One will be the home of The Creation when the Chorus and orchestra are joined by soprano Sophie Bevan, who heads a first-class team of soloists in some of the most life-affirming sounds you’ll ever hear.

What’s On?

“The Chorus is so different to my previous experiences, It’s going to be great singing The Creation with Paul McCreesh. He raises the bar high and we work hard to meet him and his brilliance. “It’s a privilege to be in Chorus of Royal Northern Sinfonia, performing with a worldclass orchestra, world-class conductors, world-class soloists and at the wonderful Sage Gateshead.” While classical choral masterpieces form the core repertoire for the Chorus, more ambitious programming includes performances of film scores - watch out for Star Wars in November.

“Haydn gives the Chorus some fabulous moments in The Creation,” said Doreen, “such as the very dramatic opening when the Chorus sings the words ‘and there was light’ with an explosion of orchestral sound on the word ‘light’. He also provides the Chorus with the chance of singing some wonderfully joyful tunes to get our teeth into and which we can go home from rehearsals whistling.” Tenor Jon Cooper said: “I’ve only ever sung bits of it piecemeal, so to be able to do the whole thing is a real treat. I’m also looking forward to working with Paul McCreesh again.” Soprano Katie Hodgson joined the Chorus as a fresher student at Newcastle University.

This season, the ladies of Chorus of Royal Northern Sinfonia will perform Mahler 3 with the Prague Symphony Orchestra, then there’s the popular, festive offering of Messiah, a special Easter performance of Beethoven’s Christ on the Mount of Olives and the rousing Zadok the Priest conducted by the legendary Trevor Pinnock. If you would like to join the Chorus, we would love to hear from you. Under Chorus Director Hugh Brunt, you will work with many guest conductors as well as RNS Music Director Lars Vogt. “It is wonderful to be able to sing with such a lovely group of people alongside such a fantastic orchestra. The excitement of performing in Sage One at a sell-out performance is like nothing else.” Jon said. Membership is by audition, and prospective singers may arrange to attend a rehearsal before auditioning. Email chorusrns@sagegateshead.com Tickets for the 2019/20 Classical Season and all of the concerts mentioned above are now on sale. To book, visit www.sagegateshead.com or call 0191 443 4661.

What’s On?

Music sparks Graeme’s career Graeme has been part of the Sage Gateshead family for 10 years. He has additional needs and has suffered with depression. While at college he showed a great passion for music. So Northern Counties College recommended he go along to Sage Gateshead where he joined Music Spark… Music Spark is a programme of training and work experience for young people and adults aged 15 to 25 years old with additional needs to help them become musicians. It is part of CoMusica at Sage Gateshead - a programme that engages children and young people in challenging circumstances through music and creative arts. Graeme, 29 from Ashington, said he was inspired by his brother’s love of music. “My brother died in 2000 and I found all his decks and LPs and went through them all and digitised them. There was lots of old school rave and so Sandy from the Sage introduced me to more and I learnt to beatbox. I loved it.” At Music Spark Graeme learnt how to lead a music workshop and went onto become a volunteer, supporting new trainees and working in schools and at private events and conferences. The skills he gained helped him to go on to achieve his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and he set up the Alligator Klub a nightclub for people over 18 with additional needs.

“As part of my DoE I had to set up my own service. I know a lot of people with learning difficulties who just want a good night out and to socialise. I set it up on the last Friday of every month and now it’s in its eighth year,” Graeme said. Now Graeme is an employed musician. He has gained an NCFE qualification in personal and social development, a Silver Arts Award and lots of experience in different sectors of the industry such as production, promotion and film-making. “Coming here has changed my life. I feel happier, I have matured and become more confident,” he added. Louise Duff, Youth Participation Manager at Sage Gateshead, said: “Graeme is an amazing part of the team. He is always here supporting other young people and the different activities that are going on. He is an inspiration.” To find out more about Music Spark and other training opportunities please visit sagegateshead.com
