ith familiarity, autumn’s seductive beauty mesmerizes us each year with the transformation of leaves into stunning vivid colors. The warm feeling that it gives us internally, enchants us. And, then, we fall into its cozy, snug, magical embrace. As the season is well underway, almost too soon, it will be ending. In this issue, we traveled the grid to capture some moments that made us feel comfortable, peaceful, and reminiscent of the season. We are all aware that autumn is the friendly precursor transitioning us into the cold and hibernating characteristics of winter. Suddenly the air becomes crisper and the stems on trees go bare. We know that winter is coming and it’s a time for incubation and introspection. Therefore, practicing gratitude and recognizing our blessings is especially important this time of year before we are forced to turn inwardly for the long winter ahead. In the meantime, enjoy the remainder of the season. Stay well, enjoy the warmth of the sunshine, and take good care of yourself. Re-

member, be kind to the souls you meet along the way. Thanks for spending time with us. Love and Blessings,

The Collective

his space is full of rich, warm tones paired with STATEMENT words that welcome the new season. From the gold bulbs that shimmer against the flames of the fire on those crisp Autumn nights, this space has a very lived-in feel while giving a slightly well-traveled vibe. From our crisp white couch, toppled with bold, warm colors, accompanied by a cinnamon bun

and rich pumpkin spice latte on the coffee table, this place is where conversations happen! While sitting on a borrowed dining room chair, life decisions can be made while reading the latest headlines. The gem in this room is our affirmations space. thing new. Fall reminds us to be thankful and to let even the darker sides of ourselves have fun under the twilight. So often we deal with wondering where we are in life? Do we like what we see when we look in the mirror? This space reminds us of four things. Firstly, that we can let go. Secondly, we are enough. Thirdly, every aspect of our being is growing and evolving.

Lastly, to revel in who we are and think positively. We close this space with a bit of a nook by the window. While looking at the photos of our travels and understanding the assignment, darling we need to add more!

ave you ever wondered why there is always a surplus of conversation at the dinner table over good food? It just might be that anticipation sparks the conversation. As the course gets laid out on the table our minds begin to depress and we let it all go. I think our little begging puppy Max, certainly hopes we drop a few pieces of fresh bread from the table. Do not worry we made a little space for him with his treats for all our healthy dog lovers.

This room combines elements from our cultivated kitchen while saying goodbye to our past magazine issue kitchen’s vibe. We will explore more this month by welcoming the fall season without keeping it strictly the normal hearty autumn colors. So, to the decorators, constant couch rearranges, and shopaholics, we hope this space inspires you to do autumn your way. Step out of the norm and have fun as it suits you. Have a sip of wine on us and relax a bit while we break down the deets on this space.

STRY & rplus

This room blends the wrought iron from the focal wall, curtain rods, chairs, bookcase, and even the window frame on our console table. Coupled with blue, oranges, rich chocolate browns, creams, and a pop of red, this space has a relaxed earthy vibe. Along with a splash of country, chic is added with our fabric choices in this room. This is showcased in the roman shades to the tablecloths and even grandma’s old cookbook and bench chair for extra seating and storage in this space. More elements and

styles are blended with the contemporary art used in this space, with a few fern photos stolen from the kitchen in the last issue. Even with Max’s food dish in the corner, he doesn’t seem to mind asking, “what’s for dinner?” This space gives an eclectic vibe while staying close to its cultivated roots.

Autumnal

Fruits &Vegetables Presented by the Collective

T

he longer days of sunshine have come to an end which means autumn is here! As we nestle into the season, a variety of delicious seasonal fruits, herbs, and vegetables make their way into our kitchens. Autumn gives us the opportunity to play around with an array of earthy-colored food, allowing us to create unique dishes that are succulent, nourish the body and comfort the soul. Here are some real-life health benefits to a few of this season’s available fruits and vegetables, that you can add to your shopping list -

Pumpkin Pumpkins! Pumpkins! Pumpkins! We see them everywhere during this time of the year. No matter their size, this huge or small squash can be beneficial to our health. Commonly mistaken as a vegetable, pumpkins are a fruit that is high in fiber, has beneficial antioxidants, and vitamin A. They are low in calories due to them being mostly water. Pumpkin is excellent in soups as well as stuffed with ratatouille or ground meat. Roasted and lightly salted pumpkin seeds make a healthy snack as well.

Apples Tis’ the season for apple picking! Get those baskets or reusable bags and let’s fill up on the benefits of apples. Not only are apples pleasing to the palate with their sweet and crisp flavor, but they also come packed with health benefits. Apples are high in fiber, are known to lower cholesterol, and improve gut health. Apples are great in salads as well as baked desserts.

Sweet Potatoes Sweet potatoes live up to their name. Sweet potatoes come in different sizes and colors and are rich in minerals and vitamins. Although packed with minerals and vitamins, they are plentiful in antioxidants and are great sources of fiber. Sweet potatoes are great as a side dish as well as a baked dessert.

Beets Red, oddly shaped, and straight from the dirt, the beetroot is special in its own way. Beets are highly nutritious and can be delicious when seasoned and drizzled with olive oil. Although some say that beets have an earthy taste, beets contain various health benefits for our bodies and organs. Beets contain antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and nitrates. There are so many ways to enjoy beets. They can be juiced for drinking, boiled, peeled, and cut up to add to your salads. Beets can even be dehydrated and eaten as chips for a healthy and nutritional snack.

Pecans Mouthwatering pecans! Pecans are famous for seasonal recipes such as pecan pies. Try grabbing a handful of pecans for a quick snack. This magnificent nut packs a heart-healthy benefit and may lower cholesterol. Pecans are known to have vitamin A, folic acid, vitamin E, calcium, and other beneficial nutrients as well as protein.

SoulSoothing

Comfort Foods

O

ne of the most common ways that people soothe their souls or comfort themselves is with food. What people eat to feel good varies depending on certain aspects such as one’s culture, belief system, and location. Certain foods can induce warm feelings and are tied to deep memories, a pleasurable experience, or the feeling of love. We call that comfort food. Some could believe that comfort food is a direct pipeline to our ancestors and our memories of the time we spent with them. For example, a grilled cheese sandwich may remind someone of a happy childhood memory. Or, maybe you remember when Granny made that special chicken soup that seemed to have qualities that healed you when you were sick and now you make it for your own family or friends. Alternatively, during periods of disappointment or sadness, some folks may be driven to their form of comfort food to just feel solace. Whether eaten alone, as a ritual, in a small intimate setting, or big gatherings with friends and/or family, comfort food makes us feel good at a time when we need a positive attachment to a good memory, a moment in time, or a cherished loved one. Through the vision of a myriad of the grid’s creators, here are some comfort food items we found reminiscent of the fall harvest.

Fast Food on the Grid Presented by the Collective

A

motto or axiom that we may all be familiar with is, “you eat with your eyes first” which stands true for most people. Our sense of sight helps us to determine what looks appetizing and what doesn’t. When we see food, we immediately - consciously or unconsciously - say to ourselves, “That looks tasty” or “That doesn’t look too good.” In our virtual world, residents eat with their eyes all the time. Although we cannot taste these visually savory creations, having access to them may help us to avoid the real-life consequences. From double-deep fried chicken, multi-layered slushies, triple-stacked ice cream scoops, buttery garlic noodles, to house-fried rice, we keep coming back for more. We can’t get enough of it. There seems to be something aesthetically pleasing when decorating a kitchen table with different virtual cuisines or a variety of takeout foods, stretching from one end of the table to the next. Even placing a small bag of glazed donut holes and a piping hot cup of coffee on a bedside table is so pleasing to our real-life senses. Creators have embedded scripts that make some of the food we playfully consume, to disappear little by little, giving a life-like experience to the user. Despite the fact that it’s delivered through a visual medium, fast food on the grid seems to be popular amongst Second Life® residents and content creators continue to provide us with astonishing creations.

other communities but always found that there was something missing for us. So, after a long conversation between all of us, we all said, “Let’s open our own, to live and roleplay in.” So we did. Fox Hollow’s name came about after we picked a small southern town theme since there were none at the time inworld based on the southeastern part of the United States, which I’m from in real life. We picked North Carolina because I do have family from there. The Ashville area holds a close place to my heart, which is what Fox Hollow was originally based on. So with a love for foxes (my second favorite to wolves) and the “Hollow” part kind of giving the smalltown vibe, the name just fit. To add to the previous com-

munities we role played in, a lot of my friends were furries at the time and it bothered them they could never be a real furry in any communities we went to for the most part, minus one. I myself have been a furry on and off throughout my almost six years in Second Life®. So that’s a huge reason we are a furry, half-furry, feral, and human-friendly community. That’s great! I love that the community is inclusive of many types of avatars and that’s a very sweet origin story. It’s always nice knowing a brand, community or business has a humane touch to it. I think that may have added to part of Fox Hollow’s suc-

cesses! Did you predict Fox Hollow would grow to where it is today? What was the point in time where you realized Fox Hollow was going to grow much larger than you predicted? Well, I never thought we’d get as big as we have in all honesty. We started out with a single sim and within two and a half years grew to eighteen. My original plan was to get to nine, then stop. Make a cute square with a lake and be done. But by the time we got to sim number seven, the ideas kept growing and growing and my daughter Alice, who’s also co-owner, and I knew we were

going to keep growing. At the beginning of 2021, with the addition of five new sims in January, we brought in Sam Portocarrero who owns the City of Port Dominion as another co-owner. He and his friends had been active, dedicated residents in Fox Hollow since day two, and after a long discussion, we felt it would be an awesome addition to bring in Port Dominion (PD). It was the best decision as it brought more types and styles of roleplay to FH, including the new University opening this fall! Sam has owned Port Dominion for years might I add, and I believe he was a previous owner of Briggs County which was also a huge community

in its heyday, so we were fortunate to have another team member that had the experience and ideas we did. The pixel sky’s the limit! You are all doing a great job in creating a dynamic roleplay environment. Do you have any insider scoop on what the next move may be for Fox Hollow? We’ve had a lot of requests for more farmland and ideas to expand the equestrian center. I’m hoping, fingers crossed, before the end of the year that we’ll be looking into expansion again.

Fingers crossed! As we’re getting into the deliciousness of Fall Season, this issue of Sage and Crystals Magazine centers around Fall Equinox and how it is celebrated throughout the real world and throughout the Second Life® grid. What does Fall/ Samhain mean to you? Well, personally I am a practicing witch in Second Life® and real-life and so are most of my children who have helped me shape Fox Hollow into what it is over the years. We are gearing up for fall conversion next week, and I always joke, “If it’s fall enough for Starbucks to release Pumpkin Spice lattes and Hobby Lobby to have holiday items out, it’s fall enough for me!” It’d be fall year-round if I had the ability to make it so. Samhain, Halloween, and other Autumnal festivities bring me comfort, remembrance of family members, the closeness of family and friends and how important they should be, gratefulness for what we do have, and so much more.

I completely agree with you Taissa. And, being that many of us have been spending more time in our homes due to the pandemic in the real world, Fox Hollow brings a sweet sense of normalcy and community through it all. For this year’s Fox Hollow Fall transition, what activities will we be seeing available to roleplayers and visitors?

We run this closer to Halloween and set a day/ time so everyone can plan ahead! n many cultures, the tradition of honoring the lives of the ancestors is a vital part of life and also a general societal practice. It is also part of the fundamental foundation of many religions. Within this practice, there are some commonalities such as offerings to the dead of food, flowers, candles, incense, fruits and vegetables, prayers, music. In some customs, it is believed that the ancestors - while gone in the body - are still spiritually present and guide us in everyday living or in times of great need. However, the practice of ancestral reverence cannot be simplified in a few sentences nor can it be explained by a few generalized statements. Ancestral reverence is, however, broad in its distinction and differences throughout the multitude of communities that honor those who have gone before us. During the autumn season, or as some will refer to it, the dying time of the year, sacred events such as Dia de Los Muertos, Samhain, All Souls Day, Pchum Ben, and many others are celebrated to pay tribute to the ancestors. It’s interesting that societies all over the world seem to venerate the dead all around the same time in autumn. It could be said that autumn is the most spiritual time of year because it is viewed as transformative. Perhaps the job of the ancestors during this time is to help guide us through releasing and letting go. Although the people within the Second Life® community that we had formed relationships with may not be related by blood, we still consider them loved ones. We felt connected to them while they were here and want to keep their memory alive. In honor of them and in observance of those that you hold close in your memory, we offer this representation of a few ways that residents on the grid paid tribute to those they love. We respectfully pay tribute to their lives.

We could feel the warmth and calmness through her images that make us stop and pay attention to the little things in life. Her imagery reminds us of the importance of self-care and self-preservation, whether it be through food, makeup, or clothing.

Recently I’ve decided to start a business in-world. T When I was starting out in-world, I had no clue how to buy a home let alone decorate it myself. akobat Bergan is a prolific, creative, Italian blogger whose images seem to recount an untold story. His imagery evokes realism, and a moody mysteriousness that we felt was quite charming and alluring. His photographs seemed so realistic and we had to look twice to make sure. We were so impressed with his self-portrait work which to us felt bewitching and could be perceived as individual internal reflections. Here is how he describes his spark for blogging as well as what drives his passion to create beautiful photographs I love fashion and trends. I like taking care of my avatar and creating a unique style. My blogging style can encompass urban chic, rocker style, streetwear, casual, chain-smoker, and hipster. I aspire to be original and artistic in every picture I create. I love inspiring people that love my style as much as I do. My proudest achievement came when I was the second runner-up, Best Urban Blogger at The BVN 2020 Blogger and Vlogger Awards (The Bloggies). I was the only Italian to win that year. I am an easy-going person and I blog for the love of fashion. I love taking pictures, being a blogger, and spending time with my friends and my girlfriend inworld. Roleplaying

oleplaying family dynamics is infused within the culture of Second Life®. Some view family relationships to be integral and vital for security and comfort while others may see roleplaying as important for social development. Although these could be some basic reasons as to why residents roleplay family dynamics, we have conducted a series of personal interviews to seek a better understanding as to why this type of roleplay is important to those who participate.

In our interviews, you will gain some perspective and perhaps understand the intention as to why some residents have chosen to play a role in family dynamics within the virtual platform. We are very thankful to our interviewees for allowing us to delve into a subject that is so personal as it bridges their virtual lives with their real-life experiences. At first, I pushed away from the idea because I didn’t want to deal with loss again. Although people can promise to be a part of your experience, they can lack consistency or not know how to build a positive relationship. Eventually, I ended up opening up to the concept of having a father and it was a positive experience. I’ve had only two so far. I made the transition from being a kid to being someone’s mother. I never wanted kids in real life. I spent way too much time as a surrogate parent to my younger siblings and witnessed my mother raising three young kids on her own. I didn’t want that to be my story. I made a decision that I wanted to be the “cool aunt” instead due to my experiences as a child. Although I had envisioned that for myself, the universe had other plans. I married and was blessed with a beautiful son and it wasn’t until the birth of my son that I discovered I was nurturing. Once my real-life son came along, I became a different person. I felt nurturing energy flow through me continuously and it overflowed into my virtual world experience. I knew deep down that someone could require that same caring energy that I was given when I first started my inworld journey as a child. Now, I am providing a nurturing and supportive experience to

joined the platform as a teen avatar and I realized that the grid was not like the other very popular gaming platform that I played. I was bummed but decided to stay. I explored it on and off for a month or so. One day, I decided to type in the word “teen” on the inworld search engine which led me to different hangouts on the grid. I hadn’t found my niche or place on the grid and then a search led me to an orphanage. This presented an opportunity for me to meet people who loved family roleplay just as much as I did. I wanted to experience having siblings around my roleplay age. In real life, my sister is 16 years older than I am so I never got that experience of being a big sister or even having siblings that were slightly older than me or in school at the same time. After a while, I decided to take a five-year break from teen roleplay. It was then that I decided I would try being a kid. This is where things changed for me. While having the experience of living in community sims and having a social media page, I was able to meet other Second Life® kid roleplayers. Based on my experience, I encountered people who disliked other people roleplaying kid avatars. I didn’t comprehend their viewpoint. Because of the friendships I made, I learned that some made the choice to be a kid due to past trauma and wanted to work through it. Or, to memorialize a time where they felt the most joy, or

The Ambiguity of Age in a Virtual Environment

An opinion piece by Ametrine

he beauty of our virtual world lies in the ability to be creative and to self-express. There is a characteristic of agelessness and vagueness that exists in the way we represent our avatars on the grid. Without the fear of being marginalized based on real-life chronological age, we are consequently free to enjoy a level of socializing, entertainment, and even express creativity in our virtual world.

can be associated with older gamers is an issue. Ambiguousness may be the perfect solution to enjoy the platform without feeling uneasy about participating. The belief of some is that the real-life aging population is about fragility and declination of faculties. Well, heck. The first gaming platforms were devised in the late 1950s. So, it may be safe to say an older generation of folks created gaming and many of us aren’t going anywhere (until it’s our time, of Frankly, who is the course!) and refuse to give ideal participant? The Benefits of

Letting Go Written by Ametrine

W

e’ve all heard the term ‘get rid of what no longer serves you’ and many of us just nod in agreement but do nothing. We are quite aware of our personal inventories of what needs to go whether it’s a person, an event, or whatever noun comes to mind. But, some of us are experts at keeping those things around because of the time and energy invested and the fear of starting over. However, what do you do when these situations no longer serve your life? The exercise of eliminating what no longer serves you is both an internal and external process. And, it’s HARD! It’s EMOTIONAL! It’s just not that easy. Surely we can’t address these issues as that wonderfully famous Japanese organizer does. We can’t physically compartmentalize things such as people, jobs, events, broken hearts, bad relationships, etc., fold them up nicely, tuck them in a cutely decorated box, then set them neatly in a drawer to be pulled out later. Would you even want to ever pull out that box and revisit it? Do you think any of it will be useful later in your life? How does it make you feel even thinking about it?

It is a deeply personal adventure embedded with a sense of honor and integrity to ourselves. So, why then, would we continue to hold on to anything that makes us feel out of sorts, unfulfilled, or uncomfortable? This is the question that we should ask ourselves when bothered by a disturbing situation or an unyielding, unfriendly set of circumstances. Not doing anything or holding on to the experience, is messy and interferes with our journey towards authenticity. It can be a pattern that has repercussions. Acknowledging that it’s time to move on is the first step. Releasing what no longer serves you should be done with grace and neither rudely nor abruptly. When you decide to no longer be attached to a specific outcome, expectation, or unpleasant emotion the benefits can be physically, spiritually, and mentally freeing.

The coming season, winter, is sometimes depicted as a dormant, silent period for introspection and regeneration which helps us with planning our next moves in life. It is a wonderful time for reflection and practicing distance from circumstances that make Many of us strive for authenticity and that us feel unfulfilled. You may not master the journey includes the shedding of anything art of letting go but once you begin the work that does not align with our innermost truth you may feel a sense of satisfaction, fulfillin step with our actions.
