Theprojectisaboutiquecontainerresortona1hectarevacantlandofsoftundulatingtopographyslopingdowntowardsthe beautifulPortDicksoncoastlinefacingtheMalaccastraits,only1.5hoursfromKualaLumpur.Thusplacingitnotfarfrom townyetpeacefulforaretreat.

AsLeadArchitect,Iworkedcloselywithourclienttoformtheprojectbriefandconcept.SincePortDicksonlocalauthority wasunfamiliarwithshippingcontainerconstruction,manymeetingswereheldbetweentheprojectteamandMPPDtofulfil localguidelinesandconditionsespeciallyrevolvingpassivefirerequirementsandspecialsetbacksduetotidelevels.

Oncethedesignwasfinalised,Iwasinvolvedincoordinatingmyteamof4forsubmission,tenderandconstructiondrawing preparation.Duringconstruction,Iconductedintervalsiteinspectionsaswellaschairedsiteandclientconsultantmeetings whichincludedmanydesignchangesthataffectedtheproject’sBuildingPlanandPlanningPermission.Thisledtothe preparationofasbuiltdrawingsandresubmissiontolocalauthoritybeforeissuingCertificateofCompletionandCompliance.

Theconceptwastoletvisitorsexperiencetheresortgradually,fromparkingtheir carsoutside,passafortress,througha40’containertunnel,intoasecretgardenof shippingcontainers,towalkingonawindypathleadingthemtowardsaninfinity poolandaprivatebeach.Consideringthecompactnessofshippingcontainers, wewantedtoencouragevisitorstostepoutsideandexploreitslushlandscape.

Theresortconsistsof40’and20’RecycledHighCubeshippingcontainersthatcouldaccommodateover150guestsata timewithsemipublicamenitiesforeventsandvisitors.Additionaldesignandmaterialconsiderationweremadeduetothe site’scloseproximitytothesea.

TheDaunRetreatestateislocatedinasuburb30minutesfromKualaLumpur,popularforlocalnaturalattractionsandstay cations.Situatedonanagriculturalland,twoholidayvillasweredesignedandbuilttooccupytherearsideofthecompound asapartofafarmstaymasterplan.

Duetobothprojectsunconventionalnature,Iwasabletoexploreandexposemyselftonewmethodsofdesignand constructionwhichrequiredmetobefullyinvolvedintheproject,frominception,execution,tocompletion.

FollowingthesuccessoftheContainerVilla,DaunRetreatsapproachedustodesignamorepremiumStaycationwithinthe sameestate,nexttoalargeduriantree.Thebriefwastobuildaluxurytropicalvillathatcouldaccommodate6-8pax.Since landownershadpassioninagriculture,theywantedthebuildingtositwithnatureseamlessly.BasedonWabiSabimeets TropicalTulumconcept,this3bedroomvillawithapoolwasdesignedtolivebetweentheexistingtreesonsite.

Aporousfloorplangivesthevillaabiggerillusioncomparedtotheactualbuiltareawhichalsoallowsconstructionto progressinphases.Thiswasbeneficialtotheprojectasitwasbuiltduringpandemic.Duetositeconditionsandlimited resources,designprocesswasmoreorganic,asalotofdecisionmakingandimprovisationweredoneonsite.Somematerials used,likebamboo,weregrownlocally.
