ANNUAL REPORT 2022

Since 1984, Safe Haven has focused on providing shelter and supportive services for families experiencing homelessness. Safe Haven provides families with the following: case management, workforce development, financial literacy, children’s education/enrichment programs, linking families with community resources and, most important, assistance in obtaining affordable housing.

In 2022, with your support, Safe Haven served 320 families and provided 137 housing placements. More than just numbers, these stats represent home, stability and often safety for families.

While we continue to work with families on a path that leads home, we know that challenges continue to increase. A lack of affordable housing, increased prices in basic necessities like food and gas, and lasting effects of the pandemic have worsened the plight of vulnerable families. Safe Haven, along with community partners, are working harder than ever to meet the rising demand for services in our community. The need has increased significantly-- from nearly 300 families seeking assistance in 2021 to over 450 families in 2022. With our community of supporters, we can give more families in need a place to call home.

Our Programs Safe Haven Family Shelter provides rapid rehousing services for 60 percent of families experiencing homelessness that come through Nashville’s Coordinated Entry. We work to keep families experiencing homelessness together and move them into housing as soon as possible.

Safe Haven Family Shelter uses the Arizona Self-Sufficiency Matrix (ASSM), an assessment tool to evaluate the capacity and needs of people experiencing homelessness. The tool aids in the evaluation of vulnerabilities in areas of housing, employment, income, food, healthcare and more.

Data is collected periodically to demonstrate improvement as a result of receiving services.

Our Impact A CLIENT’S STORY DOMINIQUE, A SINGLE MOTHER, SAFE HAVEN BOARD MEMBER I hope sharing my story helps you see the impact Safe Haven has on the families it serves. First, I have some questions for you all to think about. When you think of homelessness, what comes to mind? Why do you think people experience homelessness?

Who does homelessness affect?

Some of you may think about the middle-aged man standing on the street corner holding a cardboard sign, or the elderly woman who walks aimlessly talking to herself. But what about those you don’t see?

• Families— Couch surfing or sleeping in cars.

• Parents and children, with nowhere to go, in desperate need of shelter and stability.

• Those who are less visible.

• Families like mine.

For many years, I was a middle-class single mom to my son, thriving in all areas of life professionally and personally. In 2016, I became pregnant with my daughter, which turned my life upside down in ways I could not imagine. First trimester morning sickness turned into a long pregnant sick leave. Sick leave led to reduced pay. Reduced pay led to unmanageable expenses. As you can see, it was a domino effect, a series of unexpected problems that eventually led to homelessness.

After a year of trying to cope and manage postpartum depression, navigating limited community resources and living relative to relative, my spirit was called to Nashville in August of 2017. With nothing but a God-given vision, a bag for myself and each of my children along with seven hundred dollars, I took a leap of faith and decided to take my chances in Nashville.

Over the course of three months, my children and I survived off of hope, love and lots of prayer. In a dormitory, our days began at 4:15am. We couldn’t eat or drink past 5pm. The worst of it as a mother is watching your children miss out on the simple joys that they should be experiencing-- like

On November 22nd, one day before my son’s 11th birthday, I got the call that I consider the first day of the rest of our lives. We were accepted into Safe Haven! This was the answer to my prayers!

This was the door I yearned so strongly to open because the longer I waited for that call the more I felt the walls closing in on me.

Haven invited us with open arms and made us feel so welcome. They create an environment where families can feel a sense of normalcy.”

From day one, Safe Haven invited us with open arms and made us feel so welcome. I recall times when my son and I would talk about how nice it was to sleep in a normal bed and how much we missed being able to watch movies. For some time, we forgot what it was like to have privacy and eat a hearty and wholesome meal. Safe Haven creates an environment where families can feel a sense of normalcy. We were able to partake in holiday events, family enrichment activities, and build relationships with other families, volunteers, and staff who make you forget that you are without a home.

With the support of my case manager and a group of special volunteers, in January of 2018, we were given the keys to our own home! I didn’t care if it was furnished or not, I finally held the keys to my own home after a year of forgetting what it was like to have a place of my own.

My son and I cried tears of joy knowing that we were finally on the path to our new lives.

Safe Haven gave me the space and security to think about-- what type of goals did I want to pursue? This led me to the community program Uprise, a career development program that helps individuals overcome poverty by acquiring skills in various fields that allow individuals to earn sustainable wages. After completion of a sixweek training camp, I graduated as valedictorian.

Shortly after graduation, I entered back into the workforce with a job in patient financials.

I am sharing my story with you now as a board member for Safe Haven, with a great career as a project manager, and as an active member of my community. Both my high school junior and kindergartner are healthy, thriving, and the most kindred of spirits.

So, my ask to you all now, after reading my story, is that when you think of homelessness and Safe Haven, please think of me.

We enjoyed every step, twirl and lift of the 13th Annual Dancing for Safe Haven event held on May 21! This year, we set a new one-night fundraising record, soaring over our previous goal. Presented by Community Health Systems and Southwestern Family of Companies, the event paired six Nashville notables with professional ballroom dancers who competed for Audience Favorite, Judges’ Favorite, and Fundraising Favorite. Thank you to our amazing star dancers who took the dance floor to help raise money and awareness for Safe Haven: Leisa Gill, Kindal Jumper (Audience Favorite), James Marsh, Joshua Mundy (Judges’ Favorite), Bill O’Bryan and Beth Witte (Fundraising Favorite).

The Safe Haven Hero Award was presented to Anita and Larry Cash, as they both embody the essence of what it means to be Safe Haven heroes. They have a deep sense of commitment to supporting Safe Haven’s families and have contributed in myriad ways to ensure families experiencing homelessness have a place to call home. Each year, we award the Golden Boot to the top team and individual fundraisers. In 2022, Richard Courtney raised over $30,000 and won the individual award.

The Vaco team, led by team captain Liz Marchetti, raised over $16,000 to earn the team award. The Team Building award for the team with the most members raising money went to Safe Haven’s own Young Professionals Council. The Youth Award was once again secured by Lipscomb Academy 5th Graders, raising almost $5,000 for families in need.

Volunteers Volunteers have worked diligently to serve in many capacities to support our mission. Safe Haven fully welcomed families back into our shelter building (after the end of the pandemic), and volunteers stepped up to make sure family rooms were clean, furniture was put together and warm meals were available for our parents and children. Thank you to our volunteers who help empower our families, encourage hope, and create smiles during difficult times. Here are a few examples of how volunteers made a difference in 2022:

BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE: Through donations of almost 8,000 back to school items, children and youth in Safe Haven’s program were ready to start school with much-needed school supplies. Safe Haven’s incredible volunteers organized, packed and distributed those school supplies to nearly 170 elementary, middle and high school students!

REVERSE TRICK OR TREAT VOLUNTEERS: Volunteers play a key role in our Children’s Program by helping to provide enrichment experiences and activities.

One example is the ‘Reverse Trick or Treat ” event held for Safe Haven families at Halloween. Volunteers from the Junior League, Safe Haven Young Professionals Council and more dressed up and knocked on doors to deliver some Halloween treats to Safe Haven families.

The Holiday Season always reflects the very best spirit of giving at Safe Haven. With the help and support from donors and volunteers, Safe Haven is able to provide families with gifts at the holidays. In 2022 , 170 donors sponsored families 193 families at the holidays. Volunteers provided 201 hours of service to help sort, organize and wrap presents for families.

Special thanks to Vaco staff and their families for bringing holiday joy to Safe Haven. Decorating the shelter and small trees for families’ rooms has been an annual tradition for over 16 years. Thank you for making the season bright for our families!

We rely on item donations from our supporters to help make our families feel at home. There were 6,455 items donated in 2022 with an estimated value of $55,000. When families enter our program, we provide them with essential needs for staying in shelter like toiletries, cleaning supplies, new bedding and towels, etc. As families are moved into their own housing, we try to provide them with items to set up a home. A household kit may include things like a microwave, a vacuum, a set of dishes and glasses, silverware and pots and pans, cleaning supplies and a few other essential supplies needed to make the transition to housing as smooth and comfortable as possible.

The Birthday Club is a recurring donation program project created by The Young Professionals Council at Safe Haven Family Shelter in August 2021 to help make birthdays special for children experiencing homelessness. The monthly donations support the children’s program and help provide birthdays to children in Safe Haven’s program. Birthday boxes are delivered to the family so parent(s) can wrap the gifts and decorate for the child. For the cost of one lunch out a month, you can join The Birthday Club and set up a monthly donation to join the Birthday Club and help make birthdays special for children experiencing homelessness at Safe Haven. A Fresh New Look for Safe Haven We recently refreshed our brand and logos to better reflect the full scope of our work and mission. This fresh look is designed to enable continued growth, enhance consistency, and help expand the reach and reputation of our organization. We are in the process of updating all of our digital and printed materials and plan to launch a new website in 2024.
