The Vice President of Operations at Safe Harbor Marinas got his start in the marine business washing boats in Charleston, and his passion for the sport of boating hasn’t waned since.

C

harleston, South Carolina, is the kind of city that can take a kid’s interest in boats and turn it into a lifelong passion. On a map, the place almost looks as if it’s more water than land, with the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Cooper, Ashley and Stone rivers flowing from the west. Boats of all kinds have plied these waterways since well before Fort Sumter was even built to guard the port.

The city worked its magic on Robbie Freeman when he was a boy. By the time he was in his teens, he was working for a yacht broker at the Charleston City Marina, washing and commissioning boats. “They would come in pieces, and we’d have to put them together, a lot of Morgans and Catalinas and Pearsons that were the big sellers of the day,” Freeman recalls. “We would sea-trial them, deliver them, do a little bit of everything. I did that all through high school and college.”

In early adulthood, Freeman’s path twisted and turned like the local rivers. He earned a biology degree and took a job in pharmaceutical sales, then went back to school to earn an electrical engineering degree, after which he ended up in the pulp and paper industry because he

wanted to stay in Charleston, and a big local company was in that business. He held that job for about five years before going out on his own as a project manager.

“About that time, the city of Charleston decided to privatize the city marina, and they had a request for proposals,” Freeman says. “I put together a group of investors for a proposal, and we bid on it.”

The marina was in sad shape.

Hurricane Hugo had torn through it in 1989, busting up the docks.

The city came in afterward and shut down the fueling operations.

Some of the annual customers remained, but the place was closed to transients. “We took over in February of 1994,” Freeman says. “One of my partners said to me, ‘Now that the dog has caught the car, what in the hell are you going to do with it?”

Three years later, Freeman and his team had installed new docks, gotten the fuel system back up and running, and had transients calling for reservations. Pretty soon, they needed to expand.

“We came up with this MegaDock concept,” Freeman says.

“It’s a transient face dock, 20 feet wide and 1,530 feet long.

It was a real game-changer. We had, in our permit, the right to expand, and the transients really liked the idea of side-tie dockage because there’s a lot of current here.

We could make the whole thing a fuel dock, so you could come in and tie up one time rather than have to move your boat from a fuel dock to a slip. It really makes transient operations so much easier, for the customers and for the staff.”

From 2003 until the Great Recession in 2008, the marina saw double-digit growth on its books every year.

Freeman and the team expanded again, with brand-new construction to create Bristol Marina in 2004. In 2005,

they bought an old boatyard and renamed it City Boatyard.

“We didn’t really want to be in that business, but it was for sale, and it was a critical piece of boating infrastructure in our area. We didn’t want it to go away,” he says. “A developer was going to buy it, so we bought it. That got us into the boatyard business, and we learned very quickly that there’s a lot of chemistry between marinas and boatyards. We were able to service our marina customers much better by having this affiliated boatyard.”

When their biggest competitor was about to be turned into condos, they bought its transient dock and fuel operations.

Then, by accident, they also got into the convenience store business, after deciding to offer fuel for cars as well as boats near the entrance to Charleston City Marina.

And so things went until 2018, when a man named Rives Potts started calling. He was the Chief Operating Officer of Safe Harbor Marinas, and he liked everything Freeman and his team had been doing.

Freeman wasn’t quite thinking about retirement at that point, but it was getting close enough in his windshield that he scheduled the meeting. “We sat down and started talking about merging with Safe Harbor,” Freeman says.

“I felt good. I liked what they were doing. My original partners were in real-estate and they didn’t have any other marinas. I liked the fact that Safe Harbor was totally focused on marinas. Rives Potts is just a class act, and everybody in the company we met, we felt good about.”

In 2018, Safe Harbor took over ownership of what are now Safe Harbor Charleston City, Safe Harbor Bristol and Safe Harbor City Boatyard.

Today, Freeman is heading into retirement – kind of. He left his full-time position with Safe Harbor in Spring 2022, but he’s still consulting, as well as doing plenty of boating around Charleston.

Freeman thought he’d stay on for a year to help with the transition. That was three years ago. He has since watched many of his employees rise up in the management ranks at other Safe Harbor properties. And he ended up becoming Safe Harbor’s Vice President of Operations. “I just love it,” he says. “We’re buying and developing a lot of marinas, and that’s what I really love to do. I started helping more with capital projects.”

“Number 10 is due in May,” he says. “I’m looking forward to slowing down a little bit and teaching them how to boat.

he largest marina in the Caribbean became part of the Safe Harbor Marinas network in September 2021, giving boaters from Florida and beyond the opportunity to experience all the best of what Puerto Rico has to offer.

Safe Harbor Puerto Del Rey—a 140-acre facility in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, with wet slips for 1,000 boats and dry stacks for another 750—operates under the direction of Safe Harbor Caribbean Regional Vice President Carolina Corral, who also oversees Safe Harbor Lauderdale Marine Center in Florida. Corral is a Puerto Rico native who attended Villanova University in Pennsylvania. She earned degrees in sociology and law, with minors in business, Italian and psychology, before returning to the island.

“I was in Puerto Rico in 2012, and legal jobs were almost impossible to find,” Corral says. “I met this American investor and his wife and daughter, and I offered to babysit for her. As I was babysitting, the dad said, ‘I need somebody to come and work with me.’ He had just purchased this

marina out of bankruptcy, so I went to work in his offices in San Juan for two years.” A few years later, she was promoted to executive director, and eventually CEO of the marina. One of her greatest pleasures is now educating U.S. boaters about Puerto Rico, which she considers to be a hidden gem.

During the seven years she’s been at Safe Harbor Puerto Del Rey, she’s realized that American boaters sometimes think they need a passport or visa to cruise to Puerto Rico.

They don’t. She has seen more and more cruisers stop over at the facility while en route to the Virgin Islands. And, since Covid-19 restrictions made cruising in those islands more challenging, she has seen an increasing number of boaters staying to cruise around Puerto Rico instead.

At Safe Harbor Puerto Del Rey, long-term transients and seasonal guests have everything they might need.

The wet slips can handle boats up to a length overall of 180 feet. In addition to the dry-stack slots, the marina offers a hurricane tie-down service that boaters from outside Puerto Rico line up to receive. “They’re usually catamarans or sailboats that are cruising the smaller islands,” she says. “During hurricane season, they haul out and get strapped down. We have three feet of concrete, and the boat is strapped into the concrete so they can leave the boat there and not worry. We have a waiting list for that. We can take 240 boats. We do this with whole fleets of catamarans.”

Safe Harbor also will haul out and block a boat that needs repairs, which can be done in the yard by the owner’s choice of contractors—much the same business model as Safe Harbor Lauderdale Marine Center in Florida. While that work is being done, boaters have access to hotel rooms, rental apartments, car rentals, golf carts and more.

Not to mention everything beyond the marina’s gates, which Corral says is the real surprise for most boaters visiting Puerto Rico for the first time.

“We’re on the northeast part of the island, about 45 minutes from San Juan,” she says. “There are restaurants galore, and any sort of shopping or big provisioning—you have Costco, Sam’s, everything like that. There’s also a lot of ecotourism on Puerto Rico. We have a rainforest, hundreds of beaches, ziplining, spas, golf courses, whatever type of recreational activities people want to do.”

Some boaters tie up and stay for two weeks to a month, she says, either because they’re doing bigger repair jobs or because they’re simply enjoying the surroundings. “With a 15-minute ride in a small motorboat, you can be in the most beautiful beaches at Culebra and Vieques,” she says.

“Those islands are part of Puerto Rico, but they’re much smaller. The high season for boaters is November through February. The water is not cold at all, but for a typical Puerto Rican, it’s freezing. The lowest the air temperature gets is about 80 degrees during the day, and the water is maybe 75. The beaches are empty. It’s heaven.”

Boaters, she says, will be pleasantly surprised if they give the location— and the whole island—a chance.

“Puerto Rico is a bit of uncharted territory for some boaters, but that’s because it hasn’t been given the exposure that it deserves,” Corral says. “It’s fun here. You’re going to love it. It’s an island where people speak English. There’s a lot of familiarity to it. I remember people saying they’d go directly from Florida to St. Thomas. Puerto Rico wasn’t even on their radar. Puerto Rico should be on their map.

Safe Harbor Race Weekend is poised to become Newport’s newest tradition.

N

ewport, Rhode Island, is synonymous with some of the most prestigious sailing competitions of all time, so when Safe Harbor Marinas recognized they had a unique opportunity to become part of that tradition while simultaneously giving its Members a one-of-akind experience, it was an easy decision. But Newport is a location with a racing pedigree like no other, so it’s no small feat to pull off a successful new regatta in that town.

“We initially talked about creating a small local regatta, but as discussions continued, excitement grew and the vision expanded. If we were going to move forward, we wanted the event to be the best of the best,” says Rebecca​LeBlanc, Vice President of Partnerships and Sponsorships at Safe Harbor Marinas.

With a tremendous amount of collaboration with top experts in the racing scene, Safe Harbor Race Weekend took shape. “We recruited Peter Craig, President of Premiere Racing in Marblehead, Massachusetts, who was phenomenal throughout. He believed we had something here,” said Safe Harbor’s Veronica Brown, event manager for the regatta. Craig is no stranger to this kind of event, having been the principal race officer of Newport’s former annual superyacht extravaganzas, the Newport Bucket and Candy Store Cup. He is also the PRO of the Caribbean’s biggest superyacht event, the St. Barths Bucket. “His expertise unlocked a world of potential for making this event one to remember,” she says.

After months of preparation, 450 sailors on 47 boats (including eight superyachts) assembled at the start line for the inaugural event in August of 2021. Seven classes racing under ORC, PHRF, performance cruising (with and without spinnaker), and superyacht ratings participated in the regatta, and the talent on the water ran deep, with parents facing off against their own children and old rivals reuniting. Competitors remarked on how extraordinary it was to be sailing with superyachts in the mix, including two Perini Navis: the 60m Perseus3 and the 56m Zenji.

The overall win went to the ORC fleet’s Stark Raving Mad IX, a Carkeek 47 owned by Jim Madden.

At times throughout the three-day race, sailors battled the occasional light wind, but the evening after parties were brimming with revelry. “From the start, our goal was to deliver an exceptional experience from the race to the shoreside events and everything in between. As word began to spread, there was so much excitement that we had to increase catering numbers and order bigger tents to accommodate our guests,” says LeBlanc. Five hundred people attended Friday night’s Coastal New England Dinner presented by Wheels Up at Safe Harbor New England Boatworks, and another 575 guests gathered at Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard for the Talk of the Town Crew Party that was sponsored by Oyster Yachts.

The weekend’s festivities were also slated as a Safe Harbor Experience, one of the company’s nationwide complimentary events for its over 45,000 Members.

“Safe Harbor Membership is about more than just having a place for your boat; it’s how you spend your time.

These experiences are a way for us to host Members in amazing waterfront destinations across our network and allow them to explore what’s out there beyond the one marina they call home,” says LeBlanc. Safe Harbor even partnered with Barton & Gray Mariners Club to give Members front row seats to the racing action aboard a captained and catered Hinckley yacht, an on-the-water view typically enjoyed by only the racing crews themselves.

Ultimately, Safe Harbor Race Weekend gives sailors and non-sailors alike a chance to get a taste of ‘The Sailing Capital of the World,’ whether they’re tacking and jibing, taking in views of Narragansett Bay’s picturesque lighthouses, or simply strolling Newport’s cobblestone streets against a backdrop of historic New England cottages. And if you’re looking for an experience you won’t soon forget, mark your calendar for August of 2022. The 2nd annual Safe Harbor Race Weekend is on the books, and the event is well on its way to becoming a new classic. ▪

Safe Harbor is preparing to meet the growing demand for electric boats while making its operations friendlier to the planet.

afe Harbor Marinas knows that gas- and dieselpowered vessels will be around for quite some time, but like electric cars, electric boats are becoming more common, so the company is putting plans in place to satisfy the growing demand for this type of vessel. Most notably, Safe Harbor will be adding electric boats to the fleet available for Member use, but they’re also working on initiatives that will be friendlier to the planet.

“We have always been immensely mindful of our waterways and the environment, our incredibly important silent stakeholders.” says Brad Alesi, Chief Marketing Officer for Safe Harbor Marinas. “We are building for the future by planning for and delivering upon the technical requirements necessary for the increasing number of electric vessels we expect looking ahead.”

Some visible changes that Members will see are new electric boats from builders such as X Shore and RAND, which will be added to the expanding Safe Harbor Member Fleet. “We’ve purchased eight new 26-foot X Shore Eelex 8000 boats,” says Isabella Ridall, Vice President of Hospitality for Safe Harbor Marinas. “We are increasingly navigating toward electric boats and expanding the number of locations where we offer this amenity to our Members.” The Safe Harbor locations for the electric

boats in the first delivery are being determined, but a pilot program with two X Shore boats will get underway in July at Safe Harbor Charleston City in Charleston, South Carolina.

Patrick DeSocio, North American Head of Sales for the Swedish builder X Shore, believes it makes a lot of sense to introduce the Eelex 8000 in Charleston. “The location is perfect for the boat and for a typical day on the water,” he says. “You can go out for four hours or more - go up the bay, in and around harbors, anchor, or go out for dinner and enjoy the experience while running at a speed that’s similar to that of a gas-powered boat. You can feel good about the X Shore and know that you’re not polluting while cruising to cool spots. It’s the perfect day boat and it does something great for the environment, for Safe Harbor and for its Members.”

Safe Harbor has also partnered with RAND Boats, a Danish company, for another electric boat trial. RAND — which is based in Copenhagen, Denmark — will bring 18-foot and 23-foot models to Safe Harbor Lauderdale Marine Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where Members will have access to the boats for touring local waters. “Safe Harbor Lauderdale Marine Center is more than two miles from the ocean. It’s up the river, where there are strict speed restrictions and no-wake zones,” says Morten Aagaard, Managing Partner for RAND Boats USA. “These boats are perfect for a run from Safe Harbor Lauderdale Marine Center to Las Olas, where many great restaurants can be found. It’s the perfect place to cruise around in electric boats.”

Safe Harbor is exploring ways to electrify its operations, from electric boats for Members to zeroemissions lifts, LED lighting, and expanded infrastructure for solar power.

In addition to offering electric boats to its Members, Safe Harbor is exploring ways to electrify other aspects of its operations. “Something we’re very excited about is developing a zero-emissions, electric-powered dry rack that will be piloted at Safe Harbor City Boatyard starting in May 2022,” says Peter Clark, Chief Development Officer for Safe Harbor Marinas. Clark and his team have also been working with California’s Wiggins Lift Company to use its eBull — a zero-emissions, large-capacity electric forklift - to get boats in and out of the water. “These lifts are currently used to offload ships,” Clark says. “This will be the first marina application.”

To power all this electric equipment, which includes the electric cars some Members are driving to their marinas, Clark is working to expand the electrical supply at Safe Harbor properties. “We can’t rely on the existing infrastructure,” he says. “Our biggest challenge is getting additional power from service providers.”

To help grow its own electrical supply, Safe Harbor is working with Maffett Loftis Engineering in Cookeville, Tennessee, to expand capacity. Earlier this year, Safe Harbor put solar panels on a 200,000-square-foot facility at Safe Harbor Lauderdale Marine Center. “We started in

Florida because Safe Harbor Lauderdale Marine Center has a huge power draw, and a sun resource that can support it,” Clark says.

Solar capacity is also growing through acquisition. Safe Harbor Puerto Del Rey in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, already had a six-acre solar farm in place to support its electrical needs. Now, Safe Harbor is in the process of adding solar capacity to 15 facilities in New England by retrofitting existing buildings and installing panels on new buildings.

The company will continue to expand solar capacity at other facilities.

Clark is implementing efficiency improvements, too. He says Safe Harbor is already retrofitting more than half of its properties with LED lighting. And in California, five large properties are getting remote monitoring systems.

“No one can fully predict what the future is going to bring,” Clark says about electric boating. “It’s going to start in the under 30 feet boat market — where the technology makes a lot of sense. But as the technology develops, you have to imagine it’s going to expand into larger boats. We need the backbone infrastructure to support that. It’s a challenge, and it’s something we will be working on.” ▪ SAFE HARBOR MARINAS

While it’s not possible to stop Mother Nature, it is possible to control the response to a destructive event—a response the management team at Safe Harbor Marinas takes seriously. “Any kind of adversity, any kind of disaster, has inherent opportunities,” says Peter Clark, Chief Development Officer for Safe Harbor Marinas. “Those opportunities come at a financial cost, but when we look at that cost, we’re not just looking at reconstructing as fast as possible.

We also want to know how rebuilding is going to be positive for the long haul. We want to build something that is resilient and effective to provide a better experience for our Members.”

Three recent redevelopment projects—at Safe Harbor Aqualand in Georgia, Safe Harbor Toledo Beach in Michigan and Safe Harbor Sportsman in Alabama—are examples of this philosophy in action.

SAFE HARBOR AQUALAND Flowery Branch, GA Safe Harbor Aqualand is especially prone to hurricane damage, with its several dozen docks and more than 1,500 slips exposed to every possible direction of wind and waves. After Hurricane Isaias struck in August 2020, many docks built in the 1980s needed repair.

“Safe Harbor Aqualand has a wide variety of docks of varying ages, and we had to evaluate which ones we wanted to repair, and which ones we needed to replace with something new. We wanted to focus our efforts on making permanent and lasting improvements,” says Steven Driscoll, Safe Harbor Marinas Vice President of Construction and Development.

The team centered its efforts on repairing the more modern, covered docks, demolishing heavily damaged older docks, and upgrading fixed piers to bring them into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. They cut off the front half of a damaged dock, and used it as a wave attenuator—a wider, deeper, heavier floating concrete dock that can reflect waves instead of just letting them pass underneath it.

That kind of thinking about resiliency will be applied to ongoing construction efforts at Safe Harbor Aqualand as well, Clark says. “We’re consolidating dockage within more protected embayments,” he says. “That means that if you have a peninsula with a jagged shoreline, there will be coves along that peninsula. If we protect the coves with a wave-attenuation structure, and if we concentrate our dockage within those protected embayments, then we have a better chance with these storms.”

SAFE HARBOR TOLEDO BEACH La Salle, MI In late Fall of 2020, planning was underway to build a second rack-storage building at Safe Harbor Toledo Beach, adding an additional 30,000 square feet of heated storage adjacent to the existing 47,000-square-foot structure. In the early morning hours on December 4th, first responders were called to action to battle what would become a fire that would consume not only the building, but all the contents within.

“There was nothing left to repair,” says Les Key, Vice President of Construction and Development for Safe Harbor Marinas. “Everything was consumed. When the insurance adjuster walked the scene, between the few engine blocks remaining, there were piles of metal chain in rows, silhouetting all that was left of the boats that previously existed in the racks above.”

The existing structure had been long and skinny, meaning forklifts needed extra time to retrieve boats in the back.

Given its age, it was inefficiently heated—staff had to hang plastic curtains over the racks every winter, and remove them in the spring. With the racks serving as an integral structure of the building, it left no way to adjust them for modern-size boats. So, Safe Harbor Marinas scrapped its plans for the second building and quickly mobilized to design and build a 75,000-square-foot dry storage facility. It would have two bays in the front instead of one.

Racks would be freestanding and adjustable. The firesuppression system would be new, and the whole building would be insulated and heated.

“It’s under construction now,” Key says. “It was a battle getting it off the ground. As soon as we were breaking ground, Covid hit, and along with that, there were massive shortages of steel. This is a very large metal building. But the frame is up, and the sheathing is going up now. It will be in service in May.”

Because regulators required the new building to include restrooms, Members will have access to those, too. “Instead of just meeting the minimum standard with two generic toilets and sinks to appease the building official, we are constructing heated restroom and shower facilities to service the marina,” Key says. “It’s for our Members, and it will be in service year-round.”

SAFE HARBOR SPORTSMAN Orange Beach, AL Hurricane Sally crashed into Safe Harbor Sportsman in September 2020, making landfall in Alabama as a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 105 miles per hour.

“The property’s wet slip component was consistent with typical Gulf Coast marinas, where the installation consisted of a network of wooden, fixed, pier-style docks,” Clark says. “The typical response would have been to go back and build on the same footprint, with similar materials, to limit issues with permitting and contractor know-how. This would have allowed us an expedited reconstruction schedule, but we would have just found ourselves in the same scenario when the next storm hits. So, we looked at it as a great opportunity to redevelop the site with modern floating docks that meet the needs of ever-changing boat designs, as well as Member needs.”

A lot of times, Clark says, storm damage is the result of aging docks, or docks built from weak materials. Rebuilding better not only includes thinking about better materials, but also about how the marina’s footprint might be adjusted to better position it for the next big blow. “We went through a lengthy permit process to expand the marina to the south and place a wave-attenuator dock,” Clark says. “That protects the inner basin from critical fetch directions. Even in normal conditions, it makes it a much better environment to dock your boat.”

A phased reopening is expected to start this spring and continue throughout the year. On any given day, Clark adds, conditions will be “a millpond.” And the new docks will have a much better chance of surviving future hurricanes. Clark continues, “The piles are designed so that their top elevations are above the 100-year flood elevation. This costs a bit extra, but provides peace of mind during the next big storm. The docks will rise with the surge and be able to remain intact while not floating off their anchorages.” ▪ New dock construction at Safe Harbor Sportsman

n early 2017, when Meagan Thompson joined Safe Harbor Marinas, the company had 28 properties.

A lot of them had been mom-and-pop marinas without professional accountants on staff. Trying to standardize the back-end books was like attempting to untangle a ball of yarn while wearing oven mitts.

“The situation at the time was that our accounting was under-developed,” says Gavin McClintock, Chief Financial Officer of Safe Harbor Marinas. “There was a lack of accuracy and timeliness in the reporting because it wasn’t prioritized. Our solution started with Meagan

coming on.” Boaters rarely think of accountants when they tie up after a day of fun out on the water, but for Members of Safe Harbor, Thompson’s work behind the scenes as Chief Accounting Officer continues to have a major impact on their experience every day. She and her team created a system to ensure that any payment Safe Harbor Members make is properly reflected in the accounting records. This also gives Safe Harbor’s central team accurate numbers to help fund new programs and amenities throughout the network of locations. “If we roll out a new amenity or Member program, the accounting is going to help us see the results of it,” Thompson says.

At the same time that Safe Harbor Marinas has grown from 28 to over 130 properties, the accounting department has grown from 5 to 36 people. “From an operations perspective, Safe Harbor Marinas has decades and decades of marina experience in our people,” she says. “But when the company was first founded, from a central services and business side, we were very much a startup. Coming in practically on the ground floor to implement policies, procedures and standardizations—to professionalize it— that’s where Gavin and I come into play.”

The stereotype of bean counters is, of course, some guy with glasses and a pocket protector who sits silently at a desk and never sees the sun. Thompson, though, is the 180-degree opposite of that stereotype, often bringing in homemade treats. And they’re decadent ones, such as homemade chocolate pecan pie or bourbon cream pecan chocolate chip cookies, which she offers to her colleagues as a reward for jobs well done.

With a department that size, and us having the goals that we have and the deadlines she has to hit, all of that takes a gracefulness that is unique,” McClintock says. “She will joke—she’s a very social person. She’s like a social butterfly who is also technically very capable. She can lead a team and get us to the right answers.”

Thompson chuckles when she hears how happy her sweet treats make her co-workers feel, because it’s the cooking and baking that bring a smile to her face. “I stress-bake, and I recognize that I cannot eat it all myself,” she says with a laugh. “I have to bring some of it in.”

At the recent Safe Harbor Conference, Thompson gave a presentation that compared how far her department has come to the idea of cooking a great meal. It was an analogy that helped everyone clearly understand what might otherwise have been a headache-inducing

discussion of math that few people can understand. “I talked about what it looked like when I got here—basically, we’ve gone to the grocery store, we got our veggies, we’re dicing our veggies and getting things all prepared,” she says. “A couple of years later? OK, we’ve got the steak on and the veggies are being sauteed. Another year after that? Now, we’re cooking with gas. Cooking is a really good analogy.”

And, it’s an analogy that she intends to stick with as Safe Harbor Marinas continues to expand. “One of the things we all talk about is this theme of constant improvement,” she says. “That’s how I think about dessert. We are definitely at that phase. It’s about improving and making things better and figuring out how to adapt and prepare yourself for that next step. The company is still growing.

We have a lot of aspirational things in our pipeline. It’s a matter of being ready for that next thing.”

When she’s not overseeing the books or baking treats for the team, Thompson can be found teaching her 16-yearold daughter to drive the family’s Jeep Wrangler six-speed or reading thrillers. Not unlike, well, a whole lot of boaters.

“I think the culture of Safe Harbor extends beyond the docks and the office and the marina,” Thompson says. “The people on the central services team are just as passionate about what we do as the folks who are face-to-face with the Members and guests every day. We are a family, and that includes everyone from the CEO to our Members.” ▪

oaters of all kinds want smart, skilled technicians available at every yard where they pull in or haul out for refit and repair work.

Investing in the next generation of these technicians is a priority for Safe Harbor Marinas, which launched a scholarship program in 2021 for students at the IYRS School of Technology and Trades in Newport, Rhode Island.

“We are committed to supporting educational institutions that focus on building careers,” says Holly Ashton, Vice President of Teammate Development for Safe Harbor Marinas. “We currently offer two scholarships at IYRS to students in the marine systems program. Our goal is to try and reduce the barrier of entry in order to help increase enrollment.”

IYRS was founded in 1993 as the International Yacht Restoration School and now graduates 80-100 students annually. Its original mission was to teach the fine

In addition to offering two IYRS scholarships, Safe Harbor builds and sustains relationships with these students by participating in an externship program to facilitate the transition from classroom to workforce. craftsmanship and restoration skills needed to preserve classic wooden sailing yachts. Over the years, IYRS has grown into a school that offers five full-time, accredited programs that teach numerous facets of boatbuilding and repair, and that can lead to careers in the marine trades and other professions, such as home-building and cabinet-making. In addition to teaching traditional wooden boatbuilding techniques, IYRS students can study advanced composite manufacturing, digital modeling and fabrication and marine systems.

“One of our challenges is to make people aware that there are tremendous professional opportunities in the fast-growing marine market, which demands certified expertise for everything from runabouts to megayachts,” says Jay Coogan, President of IYRS. “And with the rise of companies like Safe Harbor Marinas in major boating markets across the country, these skills are portable, scalable and offer a wide range of opportunities for advancement.”

In addition to providing financial support, Safe Harbor Marinas offers students the opportunity to meet with Safe Harbor teammates and learn more about the marine industry. Long-term, the company hopes to build and sustain relationships with these students as they develop skills and complete certifications.

IYRS works closely with professional certification organizations such as the American Boat and Yacht Council, American Composites Manufacturers Association and National Marine Electronics Association, all of which set the standards and safety guidelines in the fields of boatbuilding, equipment installation and repair.

“We had 100 percent of our students over the last year successfully complete exams from these organizations,” Coogan says.

The school’s program advisory committees—on which Safe Harbor Marinas teammates sit—ensure that the curriculum is in line with the marine industry’s needs.

externship program and see this as a great way to help IYRS students transition from a classroom environment and into the workforce. “Students on externship often get to experience every facet of marine technology, including the care and repair of fiberglass, engines, drives, plumbing and electrical systems,” says IYRS graduate Jay Meriano, who is the Assistant General Manager for Safe Harbor Cowesett in Rhode Island. His team includes other IYRS graduates and one student completing her externship. When IYRS students join the Safe Harbor team, they continue to invest in their training. “Safe Harbor teammates are regularly sent to a wide variety of training programs offered by engine and equipment manufacturers, as well as ABYC training. This training builds on the courses offered by IYRS, as well as other training that teammates might have when they join.”

t’s late morning in San Francisco Bay, and already there’s a hum of activity on the water as you get underway. The weather is crisp and foggy, but you remembered to pack an all-weather jacket thanks to some travelogue you read somewhere. (Hint, hint.) As you climb on deck, you hear an oil tanker’s horn boom loudly as it makes its way into the Pacific. Gulls caw and wheel in the sky above. The lifting fog reveals a pair of high-tech foiling race boats hugging the coastline, and then a showstopper—the unmistakable red arches of the Golden Gate Bridge. And your trip is only getting started.

It’s impossible to describe one all-encompassing cruising scene in California. There’s more than 800 miles of coastline, and each destination is unique. That’s the magic of it. Whether you’re cruising for a long weekend or for months at a time, the California Coast is a great destination for boaters. California ranks fourth countrywide in registered recreational boating vessels, but the infrastructure and waterfront amenities rank second to none. Visiting boaters value the ability to go from beaches to mountains, stand-up paddleboarding to skiing, and golfing to hiking— and do it all again the following day.

A great cruise starts in San Francisco Bay, ground-zero for the Gold Rush. Today, the opportunities to strike gold occur at restaurants. The downtown waterfront is famous for its clam chowder and sourdough bread. You can tie up at Pier 39, which combines seafood eateries with shopping, bay views and glimpses of sea lions. You can also cast off lines and head for Angel Island State Park, the largest natural island in the area. It rewards hikers with some of the best views of the Bay. Safe Harbor Loch Lomond is one of the largest marinas in the North Bay area, with over 500 slips for boats up to 62 feet; end ties extend to 104 feet and are protected by a seawall. Provision for your cruise at Andy’s Local Market, a family-owned gourmet grocery store, café and bar.

You can also spend a night farther south at Safe Harbor Emeryville, which abuts Berkeley, a place worth a visit.

Or, continue south to Alameda and Safe Harbor Ballena Isle, where transient boaters can take in all the sights this island offers, including Alameda Point, where converted naval bases are home to microbreweries and restaurants.

Properly sated and with the wind at your back, you can cruise south under the majestic Golden Gate Bridge on your way to Monterey Bay. Tie off your lines just as the lampposts flicker to life and dusk falls on Cannery Row, where an evening sunset streaks the cloudy sky in brilliant shades of vermillion. The site of many nowdefunct sardine canning factories, this neighborhood— immortalized by John Steinbeck—is home to shopping, dining, nightlife and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Continuing south, you arrive at Santa Barbara. If you brought a surfboard, this is the place to hang ten, dude— but it’s also a nice spot to just watch the guys and gals in the lineup. After you tie up, walk State Street, a palm-lined thoroughfare surrounded on both sides by shops and beautiful architecture. With either Safe Harbor Ventura Isle or Safe Harbor Anacapa Isle as your home base, you can also head inland to Ojai. With its vineyards and cheese mongers, you’ll want for nothing.

Don’t forget the Channel Islands, an eight-island archipelago southeast of Santa Barbara. The only way to get to most of the islands is by private boat or ferry, which makes them relatively pristine habitats for wildlife, including seabirds. Anacapa Island is the closest and good for a day trip. Waves have eroded the volcanic isles, creating towering cliffs, caves and natural bridges, such as 40-foot-high Arch Rock. If you go, keep your eyes peeled for breaching whales, as more than 20 species have been sighted in the channel. For active types, the islands offer hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, diving and fishing.

When you’re ready to head back to civilization, continue down the coast to Marina Del Rey. With easy access to LAX, it’s a good place to meet up with family and friends.

From here, it’s an easy run to Catalina Island and Newport Beach, famous for its upscale waterfront and pristine beaches.

Eventually, you’ll arrive in San Diego, where you can tie up at Safe Harbor Cabrillo Isle or Safe Harbor Sunroad and dine at some of the city’s best waterfront restaurants, such as Coasterra and Island Prime, along America’s Cup Harbor, where you can take in views of the city skyline. Anchor out and listen to the San Diego Symphony, or head over to Coronado Island, where you can shelter behind the Coronado Golf Course. Keep an eye peeled for Navy SEALs parachuting in and training at the naval base nearby. Itching to hit the concrete? The crew can ride bikes along the many paths that connect San Diego Bay. For those who want to keep the adventure going, head south from San Diego to Mexico. But if you didn’t have enough time to see everything in California, provision at one of the local markets in San Diego before heading back north. The sights and destinations are still there, awaiting your return. ▪

he champagne was flowing on a midspring day at the International Polo Club Palm Beach.

Beneath a clear sky and beside a playing field scented by fresh-cut grass, well-turned-out spectators dressed in Nantucket reds, Lilly Pulitzer pinks, and oversized sunhats were brunching at one of South Florida’s finest outdoor venues while watching star athletes compete in one of the oldest and most exciting team sports in the world.

Among them were Members of Safe Harbor Marinas, who had traveled to the Sunshine State for the weekend to explore the local scene, meet new friends from across the country, and take in the US Open Polo Championship.

The weekend was entirely designed and orchestrated by Safe Harbor. “It’s one of four Safe Harbor Experiences for 2022,” says Rebecca Knapp LeBlanc, Vice President of Partnerships and Sponsorships, whose team organizes these Member-exclusive complimentary experiences.

“The goal is to give our Members the opportunity to explore the Safe Harbor network, have an amazing time,

For the Safe Harbor Polo Championship in West Palm Beach, the weekend began with a welcome reception on Friday night at Safe Harbor Rybovich, where a fleet of superyachts made for a stunning backdrop. On Saturday, a variety of outdoor activities were lined-up. Some Members did a walking tour of West Palm Beach with author Rick Rose, who wrote a travel guide to the area, while others explored local waters on paddleboards supplied by Beau Lake and aboard Hinckley boats chartered through Barton & Gray Mariners Club. That night, Members gathered back at the marina for an elegant dinner under the stars.

On Sunday, the group had brunch while watching the polo match. “We had a huge turnout,” says LeBlanc, “and the only thing more fun than the events was spending time with Members who had traveled to experience the weekend’s festivities; many stories shared and many memories made.”

Members who missed the Palm Beach gathering will still have the chance to join the remaining Safe Harbor Experiences set for 2022. In June, the Safe Harbor Grand Prix throttles up in Detroit, Michigan. Hosted by Safe Harbor Jefferson Beach and Safe Harbor Belle Maer, the signature event of the weekend is the racing action at the

Detroit Grand Prix, but the skyline sunset cruise aboard the 138-foot yacht Ovation the evening before is a highly anticipated activity too.

ext to choosing the perfect vessel, picking the right marina is one of the most important decisions you make as a boat owner. The place you choose as a home base for your cruising adventures has a big impact on your enjoyment of the sport. Members of Safe Harbor Marinas tie up at one of the over 130 locations for many reasons. Among them are location, as these marinas offer access to some of the finest

cruising grounds in the country; top-notch facilities; and exceptional customer service provided by knowledgeable employees, many of whom are boaters themselves.

Yet there’s another facet that resonates with Members, and that is the company’s philosophy to continually upgrade its properties and embrace big ideas for growth in the process. “We have a well-developed capital SAFE HARBOR MARINAS

These recent projects and plans at marinas in South Carolina and Florida are examples of this philosophy in action.

In 2018, Safe Harbor made four acquisitions in South Carolina in an effort to expand the company’s offerings in the mid-Atlantic and more specifically around Charleston, a top tourist destination. One property was the Charleston City Marina, on the Ashley River. At the time, the location boasted about 17,000 feet of linear dock space, which included the MegaDock—the longest freestanding floating fuel and transient dock on the East Coast. Skippers liked the structure because they could side-tie in water with strong currents. And they could dock the boat just once for the night, rather than stop at a fuel dock first, before moving into a slip.

“The marina was in good shape when Safe Harbor purchased and welcomed it into the network, but the company has brought capital to the table for big improvements, including the extension of the MegaDock,” says Freeman. “We’re now extending the dock 750 feet, to close to 2,300 feet long. And the section to be added will be engineered for larger boats, which means the structure will be stronger and carry a lot more power. This is a gamechanger for megayachts. We now provide 200 amps at 480

volts in just one or two places. The expansion will allow for 600 amps at 480 volts in multiple places. We can provide enough power for these big yachts to shut their generators down when tied up.”

The anticipated finish date is early 2023. That’s an aggressive timeline when you consider the complexity of the project. The channel in front of the property will be relocated, so Safe Harbor can push the whole marina out about 250 feet.

“We’ll be able to create another 100 slips as a result, taking our capacity from 300 to 400 slips,” says Freeman.

The dry stack at Safe Harbor City Boatyard is the only one in South Carolina that can handle boats up to 50 feet.

Also in 2018 Safe Harbor acquired Charleston City Boatyard, a location that’s getting attention, too, with the addition of a dry stack. “It’s the only one in the state that can handle boats up to 50 feet,” says Freeman. “Most local dry stacks max out at 30 feet. It’s becoming a great option for the proliferation of big outboard-powered day boats in the area.”

About 60 miles south of Charleston is Safe Harbor Port Royal, a former shipping terminal the company acquired in 2021. There’s not much on site now other than a dry stack for boats up to 32 feet, but Safe Harbor sees potential in the location, with its deep-water access, Lowcountry vibe and

proximity to what Freeman calls a cool little town. “That town has been hamstrung by the defunct port facility, but it’s our plan to give the waterfront back to the community by building a new marina on site.”

Permits for a marina with 300 slips were in place prior to the Safe Harbor acquisition, but construction never got started. “We’ll put in 200 slips as quickly as we can,” says Freeman, one-third of which will be dedicated to transient boats. The finish date is about two years out, and Freeman doesn’t foresee many delays. “The City of Port Royal has bent over backwards to help us get the deal done,” he says.

“Everyone is so ready for the shipping terminal to be gone because it held back the community.”

Farther south in the Sunshine State, Safe Harbor’s commitment to upgrades is highly visible. At Safe Harbor Lauderdale Marine Center in Ft. Lauderdale, for instance, visitors are observing the installation of solar panels on five large buildings; the panels will cover 2.5 acres. The $4 million investment was made shortly after the property was acquired in May 2021.

“We have 100 slips in the water and 100 on the hard and they all need power. This is Safe Harbor’s green approach to that challenge,” says David Miller, Director of Facilities.

Miller says the addition of this renewable energy source, which should be operational by the end of 2022, is not only good for the planet, but also good for the bottom line.

“If we can rely on those panels baking in the sun to produce power in the middle of the day, when peak demand is highest, we can save money, and pass those savings onto our Members.”

Like many improvements executed by Safe Harbor, this one got the green light because it offers a good return on investment and creates a better experience for Members.

But this initiative ticked another box. “When evaluating capital improvement projects, we also ask if it’s the right thing to do,” says Miller. “That’s not the normal corporate mentality. Safe Harbor CEO Baxter Underwood believes in investing in the future. He has a 100-year plan, not a five-year plan.”

There’s more expansion in the works at Safe Harbor Lauderdale Marine Center, including new crew amenities—indoor and outdoor spaces designed for the comfort and entertainment of visitors. “Safe Harbor Lauderdale Marine Center is one of the top service yards in the business, so many guests bring boats here for work.

We can have as many as 200 vessels at any given time,” says Miller. “We don’t want all of those crews sitting at the dock with nothing to do.” Safe Harbor is investing about $3.5 million in amenities like a new gym, a pool, a firepit, and a covered outdoor space for activities like CrossFit or yoga. “Now guests can play and relax a bit while the boat is serviced,” says Miller.

Safe Harbor’s commitment to upgrades is highly visible in Florida with renewable energy sources, a green approach to providing power to its growing number of slips.

According to Miller, Safe Harbor has plans to invest up to $30 million in three Florida properties, including Safe Harbor Rybovich, a premier service provider for superyachts. Here, an $11 million expansion is in the works with plans to increase the number of “hard spaces” on land to service 165-plus footers. “We currently have 30 spaces for boats of that size on the hard and 46 in the water. We’ll add another 10 on the hard,” says Miller. The project is in the permitting stages now, he says, and the city has been very receptive. “We’re careful to do things right for our company, our customers and the community.

We want to be a good corporate citizen.”

The initiative was in the planning stages before Safe Harbor acquired Rybovich in December 2020. “The company invested in the ideas that were already in process,” says Miller. “Now the marina has the full support of the company and the capital to go with it. It’s exciting to be involved with a company with that kind of horsepower.” ▪

Safe Harbor Angler House can accommodate boats up to 40 feet in length overall with beams as wide as 13 feet, and drafts as deep as 3 feet. Safe Harbor Islamorada offers wet slips and transient slips for boats up to 60 feet in length overall with up to 13 feet, 5 inches of beam and 4 feet of draft. At the dock, boaters can access shore power, freshwater hookups, restrooms and parking. There is a fish-preparation table to fillet the day’s catch, and the on-site, waterside Square Grouper bar and grill serves local seafood for lunch and dinner. Its menu includes yellowfin tuna, scallops, lobster, oysters, salads, burgers and pasta.

The on-site fuel dock offers non-ethanol gasoline and diesel from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Visitors can also go on a fishing, snorkeling or diving adventure with one of Safe Harbor Islamorada’s on-site charter partners.

Safe Harbor Islamorada also includes dry storage for boats up to 40 feet in length overall. The valet launch and haul service, and the Travelifts, simplify the storage process for Members. And, if a vessel needs service, S&S Performance Marine operates on-site, specializing in maintenance, repairs and electronic work.

Known for its world-class beaches, golf courses, restaurants and overall lifestyle, the village of North Palm Beach on Florida’s southern Atlantic coast is a prime destination for boaters looking to enjoy the Sunshine State. Located just one mile from the Palm Beach Inlet, Safe Harbor North Palm Beach provides boaters with a secluded, sheltered, keyhole-shaped harbor and luxury amenities.

Safe Harbor North Palm Beach has wet slips and transient slips for boats up to 120 feet in length overall, with up to 25 feet of beam. The largest lake in Arkansas and one of the cleanest in the country, Lake Ouachita spans 40,000 acres, offering endless boating, fishing, swimming and diving opportunities within the Ouachita National Forest.

The forest encompasses nearly 1.8 million acres and is rich with natural hot springs and beautiful views of the Ouachita Mountains. At Safe Harbor Brady Mountain, boaters can escape to this natural paradise while enjoying the accommodations of a full-service marina.

Ouachita Marine Service operates out of the marina, providing painting, refinishing, winterizing, welding and mechanical services. The on-site fuel dock offers ValvTect gasoline daily from May through September, and boaters can provision for a day on the water at the ship’s store, where snacks, drinks, boat supplies and more are available.

Ouachita Lake has open waters as well as quiet coves. The lake is full of bream, crappie, catfish, striped bass and largemouth bass, making it a prime destination for anglers.

Waterskiing and kayaking can be great family fun too.

After spending a day on the lake, boaters can sample Southern cuisine “with a twist of Cajun flair” at Brady Mountain Grill, the waterside restaurant at Safe Harbor Brady Mountain. The eatery specializes in fresh crab legs and boiled shrimp. ▪ SAFE HARBOR MARINAS
