Hen Rescue In July 2021, SAFE pitched in to physically remove 120 birds from a North Island caged hen farm. Five of the birds were even adopted by SAFE staff !
Barb and Minnie had no feathers when they arrived home with me. They had never felt flat flooring under their feet (only bars) and they spent the first few days getting used to that. I filled their hen house with a thick comfy bed of straw for them to sleep on and it was sad to see how much they loved it. They just stood on it staring for a while, making happy sounds, then eventually scratching at it and snuggling in. Within a week Barb and Minnie began foraging, scratching, dust-bathing and basking in the sun. All natural behaviours these girls were denied for the first 18 months of their lives. They now have an acre of land to roam around on – though they spend most of their day waiting outside the kitchen door to see us for attention. It’s been a pleasure to gain their trust and they are very much a part of the family now. — Jessica Chambers, SAFE Campaign Manager
