Studio 2 Project 1

Project Intro. & Site Analysis

Site Location: The property is located at 88230 Davison W, Detroit, MI 48238.

Site Surroundings:

Imagined Artist Persona

Research About the Space

Space Separation Techniques:

Physical Barriers: Using walls, partitions, or screens to physically separate spaces. This can create distinct rooms or areas with defined functions.

Levels and Platforms: Designing spaces on different levels or platforms within a structure. This can create visual hierarchy and separate areas while maintaining an open feel.

Changes in Floor Materials: Using different flooring materials to delineate spaces. For example, transitioning from hardwood flooring in a living area to tiles in a kitchen can visually separate the two spaces.

Ceiling Variation: Varying ceiling heights or designs to demarcate different zones. Higher ceilings can create a sense of openness, while lowered ceilings can define more intimate spaces.

Art Studio Furniture:

Work Surfaces: Sturdy and spacious work surfaces, such as tables or easels, are essential for artists to create and manipulate their artworks. Adjustable or convertible surfaces can accommodate various artistic processes.

Storage Solutions: Ample storage helps artists organize materials and tools. Open shelving allows for easy access, while closed storage keeps supplies protected.

Drying Racks: For artists using wet materials, drying racks are essential for safely storing and drying artworks without risk of damage.

Flexible Furniture Arrangement: Opt for furniture that can be easily rearranged to accommodate different projects or collaborative work. Modular furniture or rolling carts provide flexibility in layout.

Refined Layout Ideation

Entrance/ Welcome Desk

The space is is laid out in a way that a person would enter through the front entrance, the complimentary coffee bar along with some seating is located towards the left, behind that and the entrance desk is a platform located a couple steps above that displays all the artwork, towards the right of the space is the Studio/working space, which includes everything a ceramic artist would need such as individual throwing wheels, large working stations, drying/stotage racks, and sink space for clean up.

Vision/Mood Board

This Vision board shows the overall aesthetic of the space. With the main theme colors being tones of maroon and tan neutrals. This community ceramic art space is a representation of passion and hard work. Designing the space with a maroon and tan neutral color palette offers a blend of warmth, sophistication, and versatility. Maroon adds depth and drama, while the neutrals provides a grounding effect, ensuring that the overall ambiance remains cohesive and visually pleasing.

Layout Details

Elevating the exhibition space onto a platform creates a visual hierarchy and separate areas while maintaining an open feel. The space is a community space so an open feel was one of the top priorities when designing this space. Using platforms instead of physical barriers promotes an open feel by maintaining visual continuity, defining spatial zones, allowing natural light to permeate the space, offering flexibility in design, fostering connection between areas, and enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the interior environment.

Lighting Research

The lighting in an art gallery should be bright enough for visitors to see the artwork clearly, but not so bright that it is uncomfortable to look at. A good rule of thumb is to make the lighting three times brighter than the ambient light in the room.

Track lighting is a versatile, energy-efficient, and stylish lighting solution that is perfect for both residential and commercial applications. Its benefits include LED track heads, modern style, energy efficiency, retail applications, and easy installation and maintenance.
