On Sunday 8th May 2011, Bolton held the first of many 5k and 10k legacy events that will take place around the North West. The 5k around Red Moss and Middlebrook was completed by professional, amateurs and fun runners with a few guest appearances from the likes of Kevin Davies and Jussi Jaaskelainen. As part of our support for Cash for Kids, Saeed Atcha and Jasmine Moore ran for team LHSM with Beth Stevenson and Chloe Workman also taking part on behalf of us. It was a fabulous day with ideal weather for running. Everyone finished in a very respectable position, surprising ourselves and each other with our perseverance and enthusiasm to complete the run. All money we raise will go to help raise funds for a new CT Scanner on behalf of Cash for Kids.

‘The run/walk/jog/laugh! Was an experience in itself. It was interesting, tiring but it was also a fulfilling experience. We would definitely encourage more people to take part, because we know it’s fun but it can also improve your self esteem and it is great for charity! It was a brilliant experience for the community, as after the run there were workshops run by all different Bolton organisations. It also raised awareness of all the charities that were involved. We would, without question, do it again! This time, hopefully with a bit of training under our belt we can get a quicker time!’ - Bethany Stevenson & Chloe Workman To see how long it took the team to complete the run, look below! We were also involved in a news broadcast, more details about that on our website… www.lhsm.co.uk!

£180m bursary scheme replaces EMA The government has announced a £180m bursary scheme to replace the Education Maintenance Allowances which were scrapped in England last year. The £560m EMA scheme had provided up to £30 a week to help low-income students stay on at sixth forms and colleges. Education Secretary Michael Gove said the revised system would provide a "more targeted" support system. Labour's Andy Burnham attacked the plans as an attempt to "put a positive gloss" on deep spending cuts. The shadow education secretary told MPs that Mr Gove had "taken a successful policy, which improved participation, attendance and achievement in post-16 education, and turned it into a total shambles".

Mr Burnham said the re-launched support scheme represented a "humiliating climbdown". There will also be a partial reprieve for students who are already on courses and receiving EMAs, who had previously not known whether funding would continue beyond September 2011. Those who started courses in 2009-10 will now continue to receive the same payments until the end of the 2011-12 academic year. And students who started courses last September and currently qualify for £30 per week payments will receive continuing support of £20 per week until the end of the next academic year. Mr Gove said that the bursary scheme would "ensure that every child eligible for free school meals who chooses to stay on could be paid £800 per year - more than many receive under the current EMA arrangements".

SCRAPPED: The scrapping of EMA became part of the wave of student protests during the winter

Under the EMA scheme, 650,000 16 to 19 year olds from lowincome families had received grants of between £10 and £30 per week. The National Union of Students said that the overall package represented a "shadow of its predecessor". "Almost £400m is still being cut from support to young people and EMA, which has been proven to work in many ways, is still being scrapped," said NUS vice-president, Shane Chowen. The Save EMA campaign said: "If Michael Gove thinks that he deserves credit after giving 70p extra a week to 12,000 of the poorest students whilst at the same time taking away £30 a week to many of their classmates whose finances are marginally better, then he really is delusional."

The London 2012 organisers said they were thrilled after revealing they had received applications for more than 20 million Olympic tickets during the first stage of the sales. Over half of the 650 sessions are oversubscribed at the end of the first round of ticket sales, with cycling, gymnastics, triathlon and the cross country among the first sports to sell out. The opening ceremony, for which tickets range from £20.12 to £2,012, was the most popular event and was more than 10 times oversubscribed.

Plans to allow teachers in England to search pupils for mobile phones and examine the phones' content have been called "reckless." The measures in the new Education Bill are designed to combat cyber-bullying. But the NASUWT says it will create conflict between teachers and pupils and their parents. The government insists the measures help assert the authority of teachers and will allow them to deal with problems in schools more effectively. Schools have developed different policies on pupils using mobile phones. Many teachers have found themselves challenged by students and parents when they try to confiscate them.

'Disproportionate powers' The Education Bill for England will give the teachers a legal right to search pupils and take their phones - and also look at and delete any messages and pictures they deem necessary. In April 2010 the NASUWT called for tighter controls on the use of mobile phones in schools after a teacher was cleared of the attempted murder of a pupil. But NASUWT general secretary Chris Keates said the proposed powers were disproportionate and reckless, and will put teachers into more conflict with parents and pupils. She said: "The extra powers in the bill to search and confiscate and dispose of electronic equipment and data are disproportionate powers that teachers don't really want, and actually could cause more conflict and more problems for schools rather than actually tackling discipline. "In many respects they are reckless and they are putting teachers into confrontation with parents and with children and young people." The proposed powers have so far received cross-party support and are due to be introduced by the autumn. Schools minister Nick Gibb said it would send a "strong message" that a teacher's authority must be respected. "Inappropriate images and messages on mobile phones are often used to bully and harass both pupils and staff," he said. "The government believes that it is essential we do what we can to protect everyone from this unacceptable behaviour." The government says it will "increase the authority of teachers to discipline pupils" through:  Increasing their powers to search pupils for objects which could be dangerous or cause harm  Pornography and mobile phones added to the list of items schools can search for  Schools told they can search for anything they have banned  Teachers given presidency if they are accused by pupils to protect them from false accusations  Scrapping of the need for schools to have to give 24 hours' notice of detention. I think its a bad idea because teachers are basically looking through your private things and you could have things on there that nobody knows about, and messages you may need. - Molly Smith-Greenall

In this day and age we are encouraging people to use ICT but on the other hand, we are taking the privilege away, I also think that it can open up a whole bank of allegations towards staff. - Anon. Teacher

Scrapping the 24hr notice for DTs, adds to the list of reasons of why ‘the world has gone crazy.’ This could interfere with the relationships between pupils and teachers and consequently affect their education—Anon.
