Sadie Nash Leadership Project 2022 Annual Report

Letter from our Executive Director

The concept of “home” holds much power at Sadie Nash. bell hooks described a “homeplace” as a space where one can flourish and become the subject in one’s own life rather than an object for someone else. This was and still is a radical concept. Safe spaces are essential, particularly for young women of color and gender-expansive youth, and especially in times of stress or uncertainty. At Sadie Nash, home represents a soft place to land, where young people can safely be in community and become their own selves. And to find home, we must create it.

For two decades, Sadie Nash has been a home for the radical work of gender and racial justice, creating a container for the brilliance and dynamism of young people. We have supported the evolution of critical thought and served as an incubator for ideas that have become a reality and enriched many lives.

We provide an opportunity for young people to step into their confidence and purpose, encouraging them to experiment and evolve into the best version of themselves. Despite the odds, Nashers continue to show up as leaders, build on siblinghood, and gather resources and tools that stay with them far beyond our programming.

As we move into our next 20 years, we feel excited for our next chapter to unfold. The 20th anniversary has been a time for reflection, re-engagement, and planning. We are poised to begin our visioning process to guide our future as an organization. Through “Finding Home: Building a Movement of Leaders,” we are widening our circle of supporters who will help us resource our future work. Sadie Nash will continue to be a place of safety and care with an intentional focus on centering young people and facilitating their search for home — their home in the world and within themselves, across generations and geographies.

The beautiful truth is that Nashers teach us this every day. We can act with love and act for liberation when we are supported by community.

OF ACTING WITH LOVE & ACTING FOR LIBERATION 3

Rana Abdelhamid, an ELLA Fellow, began her 2022 campaign for New York’s 12th district. She launched a campaign with her values front and center: solidarity across differences, community and inclusion, and listening and learning.

The Founder’s Fund distributes $38,451 in emergency grants to help stabilize Nashers and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic. Community takes care of each other — we showed up financially for our Nashers in a moment of national crisis to see them through to safer times.

Sadie Nash Executive Director Chitra Aiyar shares our expertise on building community through a TED Talk. Our message reaches viewers over 47,000 times. Watch here!

Sadie Nash widens our mission to explicitly include trans and gender-expansive youth. Our work has always celebrated, questioned, and reimagined gender — and we embrace all Nashers as they do the same.

Sadie Nash wins the prestigious National Arts and Humanities Youth Program award. This is the nation’s highest honor for after-school creative youth development programs — we receive the award from Michelle Obama!

Sadie Nash expands our reach by launching in Newark. Seventeen participants attend Summer Institute in Newark, NJ on the Rutgers-Newark campus.

ELLA Fellowship funds its first year of youth activists. The fellowship honors powerhouse social activist Ella Baker as it supports young leaders in bringing a social justice project to life in their community.

Summer Institute takes place for the first time. This begins Sadie Nash’s 20-year history of creating 10,000 youth leaders in the movement for racial, gender, and social justice.

Cecilia Clarke starts Sadie Nash Leadership Project at her dining room table. Named for her great-grandmother, the new organization is founded on the idea that young women of color are already leaders in their lives and communities — and have the potential to change our world for the better.

In one year, Sadie Nash Leadership Project... In surveys of our 2021-2022 participants...

“In 11th grade, we were doing college searches. We went on a trip to Philadelphia to visit about three colleges. It was an amazing experience because we went to a place we had never been to before, we saw how big the schools were, and we saw what the schools were offering as majors and what sports they had. I’ve learned that I have a lot of opportunities. I have a lot coming my way. I just have to make doors open for me by not being shy, speaking up about what I want for my future, and just keeping on the right path.”
