Background

Target Audience & Tone of Voice

As part of Creative Networks, Designer, Idea Maker, Collector and Curator Erik Kessels came to do a talk about some of his work and I was asked to do the branding for the event. Creative Networks hold a series of events by current inspirational speakers which involves a social ‘Networking’ platform for creative followed by an inspirational talk by a guest speaker. I have been chosen to lead the design for the upcoming Creative Networks events.

The target audience for this event are students of Leeds College of Art, fans of Erik Kessels and Creatives in general so the design must be catered towards this.

Reference

The biggest point of reference has to be the KesselsKramer Publishing website. As a big fan of Erik, I already had the idea that I wanted to directly reference his work in thr promotion created for the event but wasn’t sure how. I used the way he displays his work on his website as a direct reference point. I really like the unique way that he scans in all of his physical work, in order to create a gallery which resembles a photocopied ‘DIY’ kind of zine.

Research

I also did quite a lot of research into Erik’s specific areas of work too. I am already a huge fan of his Advertising work, and I know that he likes to bring a sense of humour to a lot of his campaigns. Especially the ongoing work that he create for budget hotel, ‘The Hans Brinker Hotel, Amsterdam. As well as this, he likes to collect and collate vintage images and give them a new life by publishing or echibiting them, this is something else that can help influence design descisions.

Concept / Development

As I really quick turnaround brief, I didn’t have too long to deliberate over things that I would normally get to do. Stengthening the concept and choosing stock and processes. Instead, the length of time, and Erik’s work itself inspired to me get hands on and create pieces that we’re instantaneious, unique and quick. Inspired by the Zine / DIY feel to his work, I created various pieces of print that used quotes of Eriks and other supporting material and imagery then created photocopies of these, inspired by his website. This was pretty much a lot of trial and error and a case of ‘designing on the spot’.

Final Poster Series

OUGD603

Erik Kessels Creative Networks

I created a series of 9 (A2) Posters. Six of which are shown here. These were a combination of quotes from Erik, combined with ‘collected imagery’ that is relevent to the talk, as well as his 2 separate posters. One of his name, and the other of the titles of the Talk; ‘Strong Ideas Allow You To Blur’. I decided to use this bright Red/Pink Stock to help grab attention of people walking by, but also because I felt the colour scheme fitted in quite well with the look and feel of Erik’s work.

Here are some of the better photographs from the event that show some of the Spatial Design better. I didn’t manage to get great photos because I had to get off to Dialogue which was on the same night of this, but I managed to get a few. Ultimetely, I wish we would of had more time with this brief, but it was thrown at us with a very tight deadline, and as Abbas was Interning, I had to take it on myself, I’m pretty happy with how it come out considering, but I would try and push the whole branding along a lot more if I was to do this again. I did get invited to Erik’s studio in Amsterdam though, which was an amazing experience!
