Biography of

DR. (MRS. GLORIA NKIRU IGWE Gloria Nkiruka Igwe (Nee: Uwalaka) was born on April 3,

1965 at Umuekwule to Mazi Isaac Uwalaka and Chinonyerem Uwalaka. Four years later Nkiru lost her mother in childbirth. It was this, that made her resolve to be a nurse at the tender age of four years. Nkiru remained steadfast in her resolve.

At the age of 12 years Nkiru moved to Enugu with her

father and step mother where she did her Secondary School education .Upon graduation from Secondary School, and with that burning desire to become a nurse, she applied and gained admission to the prestigious University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital School of Nursing (UNTH) in Enugu. She graduated from UNTH and gained admission to study midwifery at Emekuku Hospital. She successfully completed this program and returned to Enugu and took up employment as a Registered Nurse/Midwife with her alma mater, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu. Indeed it was at this hospital, by the divine design of the Almighty God, that she was introduced to her beloved husband Kenneth Igwe, by Mrs. Ngozi Agim-Nwagu. They both fell in love and soon got married in September 1991. Nkiru joined her husband in the United States in June 1992. They got married in Church, August 19, 2000. In 1995, they were blessed, by God ,with a baby girl – Queen Elizabeth Nnennaya Igwe. In 2002, she also gave birth to her lovely twin girls, Chinonyerem Crystal Igwe and Chidimma Britney Igwe.

After the birth of their first daughter, Nkiru enrolled in New Jersey City University where she obtained her

BSN and MSN degrees while working as an RN, later Assistant Manager and Manager at University Hospital, Newark, NJ. Gloria was elevated to the position of Assistant Director of Nursing. Gloria with the motivation to become the best she can be, enrolled in a doctoral program at the University Hospital School of Nursing – A program she completed with high honors and earned her doctorate degree.

Gloria succumbed to breast cancer on August 2, 2016 at 5:15am with her husband at her bedside , after

giving the cancer a bitter fight, depicting the brave woman she was. Lady Dr. Gloria Nkiruka Igwe is survived by her beloved husband Sir. Dr. Ken Chinedu Igwe, Miss Queen Elizabeth Nnennaya Igwe, Miss Chinonyerem Crystal Igwe, Miss Chidimma Britney Igwe and Master Kamsiyochukwu Kenneth Igwe. All are in good spirits yet mourning the loss of this wonderful woman.

Beloved Ndi-Igbo, it is with much pain that we all

received the sad news of the premature death of an Igbo rising star -- our dear sister and National Administrative Vice President of Umuada Ndi-Igbo in Diaspora, Inc., for the East Coast (USA), Dr./Mrs. Nkiru Gloria Igwe. As a matter of fact, most of us are still in a state of shock and disbelief since the sad news of this death hit us like a lightning strike last week. Some of us are just too overwhelmed with sadness that we cannot even figure out what to say or do. Where do we even begin, fellow Ndi-Igbo in the Diaspora?

There is absolutely no doubt that this is a HUGE loss

for Umuada Ndi-Igbo in Diaspora, Inc. in particular, and Ndi-Igbo in general. Dr. Nkiru Igwe was taller than life, besides her being a dedicated wife, wonderful mother, dependable friend, core professional and community leader -- to name but a few.

In deed and in fact, our late sister was everything any group, organization or community worth its salt would want for a leader-energetic, good listener, enthusiastic, gracious, amiable, positive minded, great team player, visionary, go-getter, peace-lover, knowledgeable, respectful, humble loyal...you name it!

of Umuada Ndi-Igbo in Diaspora, Inc., touched the lives of almost every member in the most positive way. She knew all the corners and the in & out of our organization in a way that no other did. ational President (sacrificing her other interests, duties and time for her leader); Vice Chairperson of the 2015 International Convention of Umuada Ndi-Igbo in Diaspora, where she played a key role in the survival of this organization, which was at the brink of collapse at the time. She worked tirelessly to bring as many donors, sponsors, brochure donors, and participants as we all saw. How a single person did all that, only God knows.

r. Nkiru Gloria Igwe quickly and steadily worked her way up to the enviable position of National Administrative Vice President for the East Coast – a position she held until the cold hands of death snatched her from us last week. What a dedicated community leader and servant she was! Yes, these are the memories we will forever have of this young, beautiful, talented and energetic Umuada Ndi-Igbo gem.

She was truly an embodiment of love, kindness, sincerity, loyalty, happiness and humility…all at the same time. Shall we ever fill the deep hole that Nkiru’s death has left in the soul of Umuada Ndi-Igbo in Diaspora? God, please help us!

Nkiru did so much for Umuada and touched our lives in ways we can never forget. As members of Umuada Ndi-Igbo, we have been thoroughly challenged by this death. We have been crying since the sad news first popped out. We will continue to cry until and until...

ate Dr./Mrs. Igwe, an epitome of beauty and intelligence, knew no boundaries, as far as Ndi-Igbo Community service is concerned. She worked well with all Umuada, irrespective of state of origin or political & social affiliations. She had friends across the board, including members of the other factions of Umuada.

Noteworthy of her moderate nature and philos-

ophy of openness is the fact that Nkiru was a member and key leader of the Umuda Ndi-Igbo founded on the platform of Ichie Onwuchekwa’s WIC, when indeed, her beloved husband is a member and key leader of the other WIC faction!

What a positive spirit! I weep and lament Dr. Nkiru’s demise, because I know this community has dire need for individuals like her, who could have facilitated the unity of our divided Igbo communities for the common good of NDI-IGBO. What a loss!

Yes, Dr. Nkiru Igwe is no more, but her love for her family and community, positive spirit, and her dream of a united and progressive Igbo Community in the Diaspora MUST NOT be allowed to die with her.

We, I mean all Umuada in particular, and Ndi-Igbo at large, SHOULD now rise up, come together, and come up with the best ways to show appreciation for all what Nkiru stood for, and did for us and our beloved Umuada Ndi-Igbo and Ndi-Igbo in general. We owe her this. So, while we are grieving and sobbing, we should also be thinking of how best to bid our beloved sister, wife, mother, friend and community leader a fitting FAREWELL. She deserves a special one, and I trust we are more than able to stand up to the task and challenge.

It still looks and sounds like a

dream!

Dr./Mrs. Gloria Nkiruka Igwe, my dear daughter, friend and fellow ezinwada, it is still unbelievable that you are actually no more. That the sun has really set on you this soon is something I, and your many other Umuada Ndi-Igbo in Diaspora sisters, will never come to terms with. Who could have imagined that I would be writing a memoriam on you today, barely some weeks after we met in New Jersey, to restructure the chapter and reshape the entire Umuada Ndi-Igbo in Diaspora organization, for better and smoother operations/ functioning. At our last meeting it was inconceivable that I would be saddled with the task of writing this. That was not our plan. But…! Nki, my sister, why didn’t you tell me that would be the last time we would be physically meeting in this sinful world? Why didn’t you voice it that you were about to embark on this very long journey to the land of no return? Why did you have to give me this false hope of us meeting again soon? You called me “Mommy”. So why couldn’t you even give me a hint, my dear “daughter”? Too many “Why’s” and “why’s”, Dr Nkiru Igwe. But Why?

Writing this memoriam is one of the most difficult tasks I have ever undertaken in my life… Where do I even begin, and where do I end? I first met Dr. Gloria Nkiru Igwe in November of 2013 at the Umuada Ndi-igbo in Diaspsora, Inc. Induction Ceremony of the New Jersey Chapter, where she was introduced to me by the chapter Coordinator, Dame Ivy Onyejekwe.

The chapter Coordinator introduced Dr. Nkiru to me as a resourceful, passionate and dedicated member of that chapter. It didn’t take long for me to see just how professional, respectful, humble Nkiru was. What struck me the most was her unparalleled dedication and commitment to the cause of Umuada Ndi-Igbo in Diaspora, Inc. I immediately saw in Dr. Nkiru as an individual with immense leadership potentials.

That’s how we got to “click” and then became partners in progress immediately. My relationship with Nkiru only grew stronger and stronger as time went on. I saw in Dr. Igwe a smart, amiable, energetic and talented individual, who was always ready and ever willing to sacrifice her scarce time and other resources to the service of Umuada Ndi-Igbo in Diaspora, Inc. n whatever situation she found herself, Nkiru offered nothing less than love, support, caring, without ever complaining, in spite of her health challenges.

I She had something good to say about everybody, but nothing bad about anybody. She never complained about anybody, but accepted challenges with honor and grace, and served selflessly, with humility and loyalty. A true “Esther” of our time.

steadily walked her way up to the enviable position of National Administrative Vice President of Umuada Ndi-Igbo in the Diaspora, Inc. for the East Coast – a position she held until the cold hands of death snatched her from us. That’s exactly how dedicated and committed Nkiru was, as far as the Umuada Ndi-Igbo in Diaspora, Inc. cause is concerned.

Late Dr. Igwe strived to be the best she could ever be. She never took “NO” for answer. She was always optimistic and charmed all and sundry with her warm personality and her signature smile, even in stressful situations. She was always ready to take up new tasks and challenges with grace, even when she was hurting.

She was always looking for ways to make the Umuada Ndi-Igbo in Diaspora, Inc. organization grow more and more in strength, numbers and influence. It broke my heart to learn later that Nkiru coordinated and participated in leadership teleconferences from her sick Within the short time that she was a member of bed. Sometimes she even spent her own hard-earned money to run Umuada Ndi-Igbo in Diaspora, Inc., Nkiru Umuada Ndi-Igbo affairs, without ever asking to be paid back. It is touched the lives of almost every member in the worth noting that Nkiru did all this without ever most positive of ways. But I don’t have much regrets because I know where you are headed, for that is where we will all end up at go-getter, peace-lover, knowledgeable, the appointed time. I also know you are in a good place, where pain respectful, humble loyal...you name it! doesn’t exist. Rather rest and peace abound forever. As a Christian, I Dr. Nkiru Igwe was, indeed and in fact, taller believe we shall meet again to part no more. Sleep peacefully in the than life. Besides being a dedicated wife, bosom of the Lord, my beloved princess and angel, until we meet wonderful mother, dependable friend, core again! We love you very much, but God loves you the most. May the professional (to name but a few), she was also a Lord, in His infinite Mercies grant you the Crown of Glory, which you community leader in her own right. Here are very well deserve. Adieu! r Gloria Nkeiru Igwe National Vice President East Coast, as you call me mom and i call you daughter, I am truly missing you. You are a unique and wonderfully made virtuous woman. You are one in a million. When I want to describe you, you have so many qualities that I cannot remember all. You had a love for God, for your family, friends and Umuada Ndi Igbo members with a deep spirituality. You had love and gave it so unconditionally. Giving, and caring are your true identifiers. Prayerful, oh my God, you are always there interceding on the behalf of all those you knew . The fervent prayers of a righteous woman is your identity. You are a diligent worshiper and a prayer warrior. Jesus was always in your mouth as your constant companion. You have gone to be with the Lord. No more pain or discomfort. Rest in peace my dear one.

Faith over fear you mastered it. Name it, you had it. My

daughter Dr. Gloria Nkeiru Igwe was a great woman of God, a virtuous woman and one of the finest leader of our time and a legend. She was a true Esther of our time. Anybody that had the opportunity to be with her or had contact with her found their lives enhanced & touched in a positive ways. Dr. Gloria Nkeiru Igwe, I will greatly miss you. I am consoling myself by knowing that you ran this race with confidence that if anything happened to you, you knew where you were going and no matter what happened it will be God's plan for you.

Dr. Gloria Igwe has never ceased praying, worshiping and glorifying the Almighty God. She is one of a kind who always says "everything is fine". Dr. Igwe has never complained about her illness but always, always put her trust in God at all time. Your absence from us is your presence in the Lord In the field of education, she had a solid education that held the key to her success beside the blessing God bestowed on her.

Dr Nkiru is very intelligent well read hence Dr. Gloria Nkeiru Igwe. She is a prominent figure and played a unique role in her community which ranged from charitable work , just name it. She will continue to have a lasting impact on the many lives she touched.

She played a very pivotal roll in Umuada Ndi lgbo In

Diaspora Inc. Until her death, she was the National Vice President (East Coast Region). She was my right hand person in the East Coast Region and I missed her very dearly. Dr Nkiru had a great passion and love for Umuada Ndi Igbo In Diaspora Inc. She was always available when called upon and attending any occasion that involve UMUADA NDI IGBO. She seems to be saying I might be gone physically but I am still there with love and in spirit with all of you members of UNIIDI.

r. Gloria Nkeiru Igwe is from Ebonyi State of Nigeria. She leaves behind a grieving husband Sir Dr. Kenneth Igwe and children, a host of family members and friends to mourn her. She is a devoted mother and wife. Most of the time when she comes to Umuada Ndi Igbo event, she brings her whole family with her. Nky, your family and Umuada Ndi Igbo all over the world are missing and mourning you. Rest in perfect peace.

his is my final farewell message to you. The doctors said your time of death but God CALLED YOU IN. I will always call you a woman of God who had chosen a perfect place to be.

Just as she had told me at several occasions, “Mommy (as she fondly called me) I want to write like you, I want to learn to be a leader” it was then I knew that she was not only a strong-minded young lady, but also a woman of purpose, a woman destined to be a leader, for she never faltered, even in the midst of illness, she persevered, and served the organization with all her heart, strength and knowledge.

wonderful mother of four, and a caring young woman who loved and cared for her family with great passion. Immeasurable and unconditional were the words that qualified her love for family.

She was a hard working nurse, a real professional who changed the face of healthcare by making a difference in the lives of the sick and helpless, newborns, young children, adults, including everyone that needed her care and comfort. She had always aimed high in her nursing profession thus she acquired more knowledge and education by obtaining a PHD in nursing practice. She did that to enhance her proficiency in other to be the best she could be in her career. She was the best supervisor in her unit and she made sure her patients received the best care ever. She was indeed, a woman of EXCELLENCE.

She was a member of many charitable

organizations in her community through which she took active part in all the humanitarian activities that benefited the needy and disadvantaged. She was known in her community as a kindhearted and friendly person. Her many friends here today would attest to that.

he was a pleasant young woman whose humility and charm captivated all that knew her from the time she joined Umuada Ndi-Igbo in Diaspora Inc.

he was adamant and well prepared with what she wanted to bring to Umuada Ndi-Igbo in Diaspora Inc. hence, in 2015, during our 2nd International Convention in Newark New Jersey; she was bestowed with the position of the National Administrative Vice-President East Coast Region, a position she nobly and happily accepted.

Her passion was to make a positive impact in Umuada Ndi-Igbo in Diaspora Inc. and in our society in general. Even when she was frail and too weak to speak, she continued to call-in to the National conference meetings to do her part.

She was there for every event of the organization despite the traveling from chapter to chapter, the inconveniences and the adverse effect long distance travels and daunting meetings could have had to her ill health. She never complained. She never quavered. She worked tirelessly with love and humility, and at the end, did not disappoint. “Nkiru, you are indeed a woman of great VALOR!”

I cannot forget that faithful day. I had wished, I had Overseer, Hon. Patron, Honorable Board of Directors, the opportunity to share that room with you, knowour Hon. Words cannot fully express how Inland Empire chapter members of UNIID feel about the loss of our dear Dr. Nkiru Igwe; one of the greatest ladies that has grace this organization with her love, compassion and dedication. One thing is certain, our sister has travelled the road we all must travel someday; our only prayer and wish is that we can live longer in good health while experiencing tremendous love and happiness.

Dr. Nkiru, though you are gone, our memories with you have built a special connection that is soothing to our grieving hearts. Inland Empire chapter remembers how supportive you were during our October 2014 induction and fundraising ceremony. We also hold very dearly your presence in most if not all the activities we’ve held in this chapter: most of these activities we now know you might have attended while you were struggling with ill health.

According to the words of Emily Matthews, “Our memories span the years we shared, preserving ties that bind; they build a special bridge of love and bring us peace of mind”. Though you’re gone our sister, you will never be forgotten. We believe that God saw you getting tired in your struggle against a deadly disease and cure was not near, He decided to give you eternal rest. With sadness and tears, we watched you go; though we all loved you but God loved you more.

To your husband and children, we pray for the peace of God that passes all understanding to be with them and remain with them always. We pray that our good Lord will grant them the fortitude to bear this great loss.
