A R O KINGDOM

T

he Aro people or Aros are an Igbo subgroup[1] mixed with Akpa and Ibibio ancestry that originated from the Arochukwu kingdom in present-day Abia state.

The Aros can also be found in about 250 other s ettlements mostly in the Southeastern Nigeria and adjacent areas. The Aros today are classified as Eastern or Cross River Igbos because of their location, mixed origins, culture, and dialect. Their god, Ibini Ukpabi, was a key factor in establishing the Aro Confederacy as a regional power in the Niger Delta and Southeastern Nigeria during the 18th and 19th centuries.

This helped the British to occupy the rest of what became Eastern Nigeria.

Tradition

The Aros have a rich tradition. One factor is the Ekpe society which is a sacred cult originally from east of the Cross River.

The highly religious and judicial cult took a major part in Aro cultism. The use of the writing system, Nsibidi, was based on secret societies like Ekpe. Uli, another writing system, occurred mostly in the form of body art.

Another factor is the Ibini Ukpabi shrine, who was a mediat-

ing god among the Aros. They influenced neighbors and allies before the British invasion. The shrine was later corrupted, commercialized, and used for selling slaves during the slave trade. The Ekeleke masquerade activity was important in Aro settlements rather than Ekpe. Brought from the Aros in the western Niger Delta, it eventually spread to the Oguta area.

They also were known for wearing the popular "George" cloth. The Ikperikpe warrior dance was very famous among warriors in the old days and continues to be.

Largest settlements in Eastern Nigeria

Aro Ajatakiri: In Ikwuano, Umuahia, Abia State Aro Achara: In Ama-asa, Isiala Ngwa, Abia State.

The history of the Aros predates Igbo migration and Aro Umu Nkpe: In Isiala Ngwa, Abia State. founding of the kingdom of Arochukwu. Before Igbos Aro Nbawsi: In Isiala Ngwa, Abia State. started arriving to the Aro region in the 17th century, Aro Omoba: In Isiala Ngwa, Abia State.

Ibibios arrived from the Benue and plateau area and Aro Okporoenyi: In Ikwuano area of Abia State. founded states such as Obong Okon Ita and Ibom west of Aro Iyama: In Ikwuano, area of Abia State. the Cross River. Igbo migrations led by Eze Agwu and Aro Amuru: In Ikwuano, area of Abia State.

Nnachi into the Aro region started in the mid-17th century.

Aro Ndizuogu: Ideato area of Imo State These Igbo migrants were resisted by the indigenous Ibibio.

The Aro-Ibibio wars and the migration of the Akpa from Aro Ndi Ikerionwu: In Anambra state. east of the Cross River, formed the nation during the Aro Ajalli: In Anambra State. turning point of the 17th century to the 18th century. The Aro Nzerem: In Ebonyi State.

Igbo and Akpa alliance, defeated and assimilated the Aro Amokwe: In Udi area of Enugu State. original Ibibio inhabitants after long years of warfare. By Aro Isuochi: In Abia State. this time, the palm oil and slave trade was popular in the Aro Isiokpo/Igwurita Ikwerre area in Rivers State. hinterland. By the mid-18th century, there were mass Aro Abagana: In Anambra State. migrations of Aro businessmen to the Igbo hinterland and Aro Oru: In Imo State. adjacent areas. This migration, influence of their god Ibini Aro Nempi: In Imo State Ukpabi through priests, and their military power supported Aro Ngwa: In Abia State. by alliances with several related neighboring Igbo and Aro Ezeagu: In Enugu State. eastern Cross River militarized states (particularly Ohafia, Aro Achi: In Enugu State.

Congresswoman Judy Chu

J

udy Chu was elected to the U.S. House of

Representatives in July 2009. She represents the 27th Congressional District, which includes Pasadena and the west San Gabriel Valley of southern California.

R

ep. Chu currently serves on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over legislation pertaining to taxes, revenues, Social Security, and Medicare. In that Committee, Rep. Chu is a member of the Subcommitees on Health and Human Resources, giving her oversight over healthcare reform and crucial safety net programs.

She also serves on the House Small Business

Committee, which has oversight of the Small Business Administration, and is a member of the Subcommittee on Economic Growth, Tax and Capital Access.

In 2011, Chu was elected Chair of the

Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), which advocates for the needs and concerns of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community across the nation. She helps lead the Tri-Caucus, a joint effort with the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

hu founded and co-chairs the Congressional Creative Rights Caucus, which advocates for the copyright protections of those in the creative industries, such as music, film and visual arts. She also serves in leadership of the House Democratic Caucus as a Member of the Steering and Policy Committee.

Some of Rep. Chu’s proudest accomplishments in Congress include: introducing and passing a Congressional resolution of regret for the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882; working with President Obama to declare the San Gabriel Mountains a national monument; requiring the Department of Defense to address military hazing; helping entrepreneurs by establishing two new Small Business Development Centers in the San Gabriel Valley; and helping small businesses refinance old, expensive real estate loans by reviving the Small Business Administration’s 504 loan refinance program.

hu was first elected to the Board of Education for Garvey School District in 1985. From there, she was elected to the Monterey Park City Council, where she served as Mayor three times. She then was elected to the State Assembly and then California’s elected tax board, known as the State Board of Equalization. In 2009, she became the first Chinese American woman elected to Congress in history.

hu lives with her husband, Michael Eng, in the city of Monterey Park, where they have been residents for over 30 years.

COUNCILMEMBER HON. OKORIE EZIEME C

ouncilmember Okorie Ezieme is a longtime resident of the City of Altadena being first elected to the City Council in 2008. He currently serves as the Chairman, providing the longest uninterrupted years of service in Altadena, California.

Throughout the years, he has served the City of

Altadena in a variety of capacities that has positively impacted the region. He was appointed by the Honorable Supervisor Michael Antonovich as a member of the Los Angeles County Floodplain Management Plan Update Steering Committee. He also served as a member of the Pasadena Unified School District Budget Advisory Committee. As a member of the NAACP, he has worked to understand and alleviate barriers surrounding issues of race and inequality among Black/African Americans and Africans in the United States. He is an Ordained Deacon at his church and the President of NGOK Global Consultants, Inc., a professional Accounting and Tax firm.

Ezieme describes his leadership vision as

“Progressive Ideas and Community Engagement.”

Councilmember Ezieme has spearheaded several prevalent issues and is credited for partnering with the local law enforcement agencies in reinvigorating Neighborhood Watch Groups which has helped to decrease crime rates. In addition, he collaborated with Men Educating Men About Health to initiate theannual “Get Healthy Altadena” event, which provides free medical screenings and education to the community. One of his key focuses advances academic excellence for children especially in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, and every Monday he leads a free tutorial after school program in the community. He is an advocate for the rights of citizens believing that everyone not only deserves to be heard, but to have a voice on how they are governed. Councilmember Ezieme’s influence transcends beyond the City of Altadena.

Internationally, Councilmember Ezieme is highly respected and sought after. He has been called upon by many leaders across the continent of Africa on matters including but not limited to security, military, immigration, trade, banking, logistics, education, healthcare and technology. According to Ezieme, he has consistently reminded each leader that “True power lies in and with the people.” He further stated that he does not bite his tongue when telling leaders that they are “servants working for the common good of the people they represent.”

onorable Ezieme truly believes in the saying “An informed people is a happy people” and will often declare “I am a SERVANT working for the common good of humanity.” Ezieme is a man of his word, an honorable man, and a leader who cares deeply for all people.

Councilmember Ezieme and his wife Ngozi lives in the City of Altadena, California where they are raising their five children – Rachel, Ifeanyi, Sampson, David and Joshua.

Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson B

orn in Watts, Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson was elected in November 2014 to represent California’s 64th Assembly District that includes the communities of Carson, Compton, Gardena, Harbor Gateway, Lynwood, North Long Beach, Rancho Dominguez, South Los Angeles, Torrance, Watts/Willowbrook and Wilmington.

sm. Gipson currently serves as Assembly Democratic Caucus Chair, responsible for driving the legislative decision making process for the majority caucus, address statewide issues, and hold weekly meetings to discuss and set the caucus’ priorities. Mr. Gipson was appointed in 2016 and re-appointed in 2017, 2018 and 2019 by Speaker Anthony Rendon to this leadership post.

e is also a member of several standing Assembly committees including: Business and Professions, Governmental Organization, Human Services, Insurance, Transportation, and Chair of the Select Committee on Infectious Diseases in High-Risk Disadvantaged Communities and the Chair of the Select Committee on Gun Violence in Communities of Color. Mr. Gipson also serves on the following Assembly Select Committees: Career Technical Education and Building a 21st Century Workforce, Community and Law Enforcement Relations and Responsibilities, Foster Care, Los Angeles County Homelessness, and the Nonprofit Sector.

I

n 2015, Mike A. Gipson was appointed chair of the powerful Joint Legislative Audit Committee (JLAC). Under his leadership, JLAC convened 9 hearings during the 2015 legislative year along with 21 audit requests. These included the University of California and its budget process, Central Basin Municipal Water District, and Caltrans’ Maintenance Program to name a few. Additionally, Governor Jerry Brown approved four bills authored by Asm. Gipson that improves the quality of education (AB25), expanding access to healthcare (AB444), addressing homelessness (AB1228) and humanizing public safety in our communities (AB835). These were among his first bills signed into law as an Assemblymember.

Continuing his path of public service, Asm. Gipson began his second term in office by authoring legislation to close a

deadly loophole in the California Penal Code, provide internet related services for foster and incarcerated youth, and establish a working group to bring back Career Technical Education for K-12. He was also successful in securing $11.3 million for Compton Community College, on the heels of their new accreditation, to support the college’s transition into an independent institution.

D

emocratic Caucus Chairman Mike Gipson has championed the following budget priorities since taking office: establishing the first ever state earned income tax credit for working families, repeal the maximum family grant that will lift 135,000 children out of poverty and approve a path to $15/hour in California, passing comprehensive transportation legislation, spearheading a historic cap and trade package, combating homelessness, and serving as the lead Assemblymember on curbing gun violence. As chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Infectious Diseases in High Risk Disadvantaged Communities, Mr. Gipson continues to lead the effort towards developing a statewide plan of zero new infections, zero deaths, and zero stigma in California, known as the “Getting to Zero” campaign.

s Mr. Gipson begins his third term in office, he continues to focus on his top priorities that include public safety, healthcare, homelessness and foster youth.

A

sm. Gipson currently lives in Carson where he is a devoted husband to his wife Le Cresha. They have two sons, Devon and Jordan along with their two grandchildren; Faafetai Ole Alofa, and Cataleya Acevedo Gipson. Their third son, D’Ance passed away at 3 years old as a result of a hit-and-run motorist.

John J. Kennedy

Vice Mayor and Councilmember – District 3 Chair, Public Safety Committee Member, Finance and Audit Committee On 7 March 2017, John J. Kennedy was elected to a second four-year term on the Pasadena City Council. Over the past years, Vice Mayor Kennedy has earned a reputation as a principled, persistent and pragmatic policymaker, focused on some of the most important issues confronting District 3 and the City of Pasadena. He has emerged as a strong advocate for fiscal integrity; public safety; parks; affordable housing; local hiring, contracting, and supplies; and progressive social justice issues, including the environment. Finance and Audit Committee: two and half years ago, Vice Mayor Kennedy was appointed to the Finance and Audit Committee of the City Council.

Serving in that capacity, he has championed for a balanced budget, improved technological infrastructure and holding staff accountable for failed system acquisition and implementation.

His primary goal is to ensure that Pasadena has a process in place to solve unfunded pension obligations and to foster stringent auditing practices. Vice Mayor Kennedy served on the Financial Oversight Committee. In that role, he joined colleagues in overseeing efforts to make the City whole from an embarrassing embezzlement scandal. The City has already received approximately $5.2 million dollars back from the $6 million dollars that was embezzled. The City now has a reasonable expectation that it will be made whole.

All of the perpetrators of the embezzlement have been convicted for their crimes.

Serving as Chair of the Public Safety Committee: Vice Mayor Kennedy is uniquely qualified, as a former civilian Deputy Chief of Police for Administrative Services, to bring proven leadership and knowledgeable perspective to challenging public safety issues affecting the community whether it involves fire, police or public works. He has ensured a community voice in public safety issues, while supporting public safety professionals with equitable pay and modern equipment.

Sidewalks: the Vice Mayor has made it his business to secure increased and steady funding for the replacement of thousands of linear feet of damaged sidewalks in District 3 and across the City of Pasadena. Several of the individuals tasked with the City’s Sidewalk Program are newly hired local residents. Pasadena as a world-class city must continue to invest in its infrastructure to ensure safety and a beautiful landscape. Parks: One of the first issues of business as a newly elected for Councilmember Kennedy was to ensure a community voice in the Robinson Park Renovation Project. So he was able to convince a majority of his colleagues to adopt a more inclusive architectural selection process that incorporated significant community outreach. He also led the effort for full funding for the construction of the project and continues to seekfunding for the replacement of the onsite pool. Additionally, he has supported park creation and enhancements throughout the city, including Pocket Parks.

Housing: always with an eye towards addressing the overwhelming need for housing in the community, Vice Mayor Kennedy is a tenacious advocate for the building of quality affordable housing in District 3 and throughout the city. He is most proud of his role in convincing his colleagues to allocate additional funding to the Heritage Square Senior Housing Project Site I, some recently completed 69 units of new affordable housing. His leadership helped to ensure that the project won the necessary California Tax Credits to build. He is equally committed to winning approval for more affordable housing on the adjacent site at Orange Grove Boulevard and Fair Oaks Avenue, commonly referred to as Heritage Square Site II. Vice Mayor Kennedy championed the effort that lead to the adoption, on October 13, 2016, of the following Permanent Supportive Housing Policy: “The City of Pasadena believes that decent, safe and affordable housing is the right of every Pasadena resident. Furthermore, a key longterm solution for homelessness is the provision of permanent supportivehousing. Therefore, consistent with the Housing Element, the City will facilitate abalanced geographical dispersal of affordable housing including permanent supportive housing throughout the City.” Local hiring, Contracting and Supplies: in every real estate development project in the City. Vice Mayor Kennedy has one overriding objective, beyond seeing that worldclass developments are approved, and that is to ensure that, when taxpayers’ dollars are engaged, the residents of Pasadena are included in the success of the project. One example of his leadership in this vein was his successful advocacy that culminated with the developer of the Parson site, (bounded by Walnut Street, Fair Oaks Avenue, Union Street and Pasadena Avenue), committing to incorporate local jobs, local contracting and local materials supply in the project. Additionally, the developer of the site agreed to provide a monument to the historic relevance of those persons and businesses who were originally displaced by eminent domain under the guise of urban renewal. The referenced development, when fully completed, will be the largest real estate development ever in District 3 and the City of Pasadena. Libraries and Education: not long ago Vice Mayor Kennedy helped to host the kick-off celebration of a wonderful partnership with the Flintridge Center’s Apprenticeship Preparation Program to build nine (9) Little Free Libraries in District 3. It is Vice Mayor Kennedy’s goal to make certain that every child in his District has access to literature that transforms lives because literacy, a book, is one the definitive measures of a pathway to life-long learning, achievement and a happy life. “Little Free Libraries are about connecting with our neighbors and community; they are mini-town squares where people can meet over a good book and get to know each other.” Many years ago, before serving in elected office, Vice Mayor Kennedy, had the distinct honor of cochairing the Library Task Force for Alternate Funding which preserved the Pasadena Library System, where today it is one the most highly-respected in the nation. Progressive Social Issues: Vice Mayor Kennedy believes that an honest day of work deserves a livable wage and that is why he supported the gradual increase of the minimum wage. Pasadena is blessed with being one of the few cities in all of California with its own Health Department. Vice Mayor Kennedy a short time ago served on a committee, with two of his colleagues, to help find solutions for health care delivery services in the wake of right-sizing the City’s Health Department. This effort was a success as the City had the vision to establish a deeper collaboration with two Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) to prevent the diminution in services to vulnerable populations. Additionally, before Kennedy was a member of the City Council, he served on the board of Community Health Alliance of Pasadena, now ChapCare, with two of those years as Chair of the Board of Directors. Chapcare’s involvement was pivotal in preventing significant layoffs in the City’s Health Department.

The Vice Mayor has demonstrated his support for Zero Waste policies and in fact wrote the City’s first recycling ordinance. In 2014, the Mayor asked Vice Mayor Kennedy to lead a Sister Cities delegation to China and Taiwan on his behalf. Such an assignment was familiar and welcomed as Vice Mayor Kennedy had been a People-to-People Student Ambassador to several cities in Europe and involved in goodwill missions to a number of countries in Africa. Speaking about Africa, Vice Mayor Kennedy lead a delegation to Dakar Plateau, The Republic of Senegal. In early 2018, the City Council of Pasadena adopted Dakar Plateau as its newest Sister City relationship; the first on the Continent of Africa. Just last month, at the request of Mayor Marc-Antione Jamet, Vice Mayor Kennedy, led a small delegation to Val-de-Reuil, France (The Area of Normandy) at their Mayor. r. Chairman, chief guest speaker, chief launcher, distinguished guests, ladies, and gentlemen. All protocols observed. It is with great humility that I stand before you to welcome you to this important event. I wish to thank all our members who came from various cities and particularly all those who are in attendance tonight for honoring our invitation and those that came from Nigeria and United Kingdom; we hope to excite you with our cultural presentation(s).

Special thanks to all members of the executive, chapter presidents (board of directors), and patrons for their deep dedication to patronage, and to our guests that have supported us in the past for their continuous generosity.

o our host chapter Aro Okigbo of Southern California, thank you for the great work and commitment in putting this event together. Also, I will like to thank the members of the convention planning committee and all Umu Aro who have contributed, because without their support and active engagement, this occasion would not have been possible. Special thanks to Mazi Nwakanna Okoro, Ada-mazi Ogadinma Okeke, Mazi Damian Orji (national convention chair and co-chairs and all their dedicated team); Mazi Kingsley Okereke, local convention chairman; Mazi (Dr.) Obinna Okereke, national planning convention committee secretary for his tenacity, hard work, and commitment to making sure we have a successful convention; Mazi Kanu Okereke, President Aro Okigbo of Southern California for his leadership in planning and hosting of this convention; Mazi Arthur Abraham whose dream it was for this year convention be hosted in City of Angeles. he purpose of inviting you to this event is to help us raise funds for humanitarian cause – sustenance and operation of our medical clinic & 8-bed maternity in Arochukwu Kingdom. The need for AAUSA Medical Clinic rose because our people were frequently dying from preventable and manageable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, typhoid, malaria and other common ailments. AAUSA medical clinic has being used in providing medical services to our community in Arochukwu Nigeria to assist those with medical needs. IYOM Aro Houston added a maternity ward to the clinic. The challenges are enormous, and we are soliciting assistance from our guests to enable us to continue to fund this project.

Since its inception the medical clinic has been widely acclaimed to have poten-

tially saved many lives due to early intervention, diagnosis and management of the diseases. Medications and medical supplies are not readily available, and when available are usually very expensive. That is why we are asking you to help us save humanity.

All ARO USA (AAUSA) will maintain its goals and aspiration of Unity,

Respect, Love, Trust, and Support for one another. Tonight, we are promising you a night of cultural extravaganza. Also, we are celebrating our successes with special recognition of our compassionate supporters. There will be enough to eat and drink, and we intend to have a fun filled night.

Finally, I am half way to my presi-

dency and I want to use this opportunity to thank all those who have continue unwavering, belief, and supported all we are intending to accomplish for our people. I couldn’t have done all without your encouragement. Also, we of All Aro USA (AAUSA) are indebted to Dr. Loveth Oji for all her services to us on the medical clinic. I don’t know what we would’ve done without her. Therefore, I promise you that whatever you donate will be effective and expediently used for the purpose for which it was intended. AUSA was launched in August, '97.

Aro Ikpa conflict of '99, AAUSA sponsored/financed Aro Ikpa

successfully attain autonomous community status without bloodshed.

Eze Aro, Mazi Vincent Okoro visited USA with an entourage of

four sponsored by AAUSA. Funds were raised for the foundation of the Civic Center by AAUSA and handed over to Mazi (Dr.) Sam Ohuabunwa by Mazi Osu Kanu Okoro.

AAUSA was recognized at the formal opening of the Center.

Therefore, the challenges of today can't match those at inception when some referred to AAUSA as akin to “slavery” where you don't need to belong to destroy it.

Mazi Jideofor (Jay) Oji’s 2001 dream of AAUSA Medical Clinic was stream-rolled with seed money and subsequent huge financial supports from Mazi Eni Paul Kanu, Mazi Jide (Jay) Oji, Mazi Dave Iphie, Mazi (Dr) Ejike Onyeador, Mazi (Dr) Sam Okey Ijeomanta, Maz (Dr) Mike Ukoha, Mazi Enyi Kanu, Mazi Emma Ogbonnaya Nnadozie, Mazi Tony Igwe, late Mazi Nwosu Kanu Okoro, and many others. AAUSA chapters like Nzuko Aro NY/NJ, Nzuko Aro of Northern California, Nzuko Aro Dallas, Nzuko Aro Houston, and Nzuko Aro Chicago huge donations helped get the clinic off the ground. Also, members’ contributions and yearly sustenance dues help to sustain and maintain the medical clinic. We are equally grateful to “IYOM Aro Houston” for the donation of “State of the Art” maternity ward to AAUSA Medical Clinic in Arochukwu.

In addition, we thank Mazi Oji Kanu of Northern California for providing living accommodation to AAUSA resident doctor for 3 yrs. We similarly, thank Mazi (Dr.) Sam Okey Ijeomanta for providing BOREHOLE water to the AAUSA Medical Clinic and Dr. Ejike Onyeador for his huge donation to the AAUSA medical clinic.

AAUSA recognized and appreciated the financial contributions

of Mazi (Dr) Alex Otti, Mazi (Dr) Sam Ohuabunwa, Mazi (Dr) Chikwendu Udensi, and many others at home made to AAUSA Medical Clinic. and guidance in running the medical clinic and without her, we don’t know how we could’ve run the clinic from here. We are as well thankful to Dr. Ulo for his occasional assistance to the clinic.

The AAUSA medical clinic current have resident doctor, a trained nurse, and trained lab technician. The clinic is furnished and equipped with new furniture – chairs, desks, tables. For the past two years, the salary of the clinic staffs are paid regularly.

On behalf of Aro-Okeigbo of Southern California (ASC),

I humbly welcome you to this gathering of all Aro people in the City of Cerritos, County of Los Angeles, State of California, United States of America (USA)

This convention could not have happened at a better time.

It is an interesting time for those of us in diaspora and our people in the home country as well. As we brainstorm on the solutions to the problems in our community in Nigeria, ranging from basic health care to provision of infrastructures that support livability, it is also important that we build the foundation for a sustainable community for us and for the new generation we have given birth to here in the USA. Associations such as ours and this convention gathering, work to support the endeavor.

I pray that Almighty God will give us the wisdom and determination to continue in this positive direction.

The Aros are good and great people. By historical providence, we find our communities all

over Southern Nigeria. If our forbearers were able to maintain communications and collaboration, despite the separations for over hundreds of years, we cannot afford to disengage in the presence of advanced technology and civilization. These factors should make it easier for Aro communities to remain and work together as one community irrespective of physical location.

Today, we come together to ask our friends and family to support us in sustaining a health

clinic back home. Thank you for answering our call. We have put together some cultural presentations to entertain our guests. We hope that you enjoy every bit of it.

I wish to express my gratitude for the hard work that made this occasion successful.

I especially thank the AAUSA Executive Team, Members of the National Convention

Planning Committee, ASC Executive Team, Members of the ASC Convention Committees and the entire members of ASC for their diligence, commitment and dedication to the success of this convention.

LATE MAZI NWOSU OKORO THE EXIT OF AN ICON I have been mourning ever since I heard the sad and shocking news of the passing away unto glory of Mazi Nwosu Okoro.

The late Mazi Nwosu Okoro was introduced to me by the late Surveyor Sam Nwafor of Ujari village in December 1985 when he conscripted me to prepare a survey plan where his present house is situated and other properties in Arochukwu. I vividly recall how what first began as a cordial work relationship developed into a long lasting friendship. Nnenna, who later became his wife, had visited my cousin late Emilia Chikezie from Calabar where she was working as a nurse and had joined me to an evening Christmas party where she and Nwosu first met. Ever since that fateful introduction, Nwosu and Nnenna have been inseparable.

LATE MAZI OSU The Late Mazi Nwosu Okoro of Obinkita Arochukwu was a great man and KANU OKORO. remained this way until his passing. During his time at Aggrey Memorial College Arochukwu in the mid 60's, he excelled as a student and developed the work ethic, motivation, and drive that stayed with him in his adult life.

Upon completing his education, he travelled to the United States and settled in New York City. In New York and the greater Tristate area he became the point person for All Umu Aro in USA and a welcoming face to many who immigrated to the area.

As a pioneer member of Nzuko Umu Aro in the United States, the Late Mazi Nwosu Okoro played a tremendous role in sustaining the organization. He would on many occasions drag members to monthly meetings to engage in conversations and problem solving regarding ongoing affairs in Arochukwu. That is the enigmatic Nwosu Okoro for you.

He was an efficient organizer and amazing builder who loved Arochukwu dearly and always looked for a way in which he could contribute towards its development back home. Given his tenacity and total commitment to the betterment of Nzuko Umu Aro, it was no surprise that we served as the Vice President and later President of Nzuko Umu Aro New York/New Jersey/ Connecticut chapter in the mid 90's swung into action. During his term, his main efforts were focused on renovating the General Hospital in Arochukwu. He helped to finance the upgrade of the maternity ward. Additionally, he championed and contributed immensely to the establishment of a Computer Library Center in Arochukwu for all Umu Aro both at home and in the diaspora. His tenure as President was also defined by his jovial attitude and warm spirit. Meetings were a place of reunion and laughter that afforded members a chance to come together in harmony.

It was this genial giant, who was the architect behind the formation of All Aro USA (an umbrella organization for Aros in Diaspora) in August 1997. He was the first Vice President and later became President of the Organization that hosts biannual conventions and is recognized for the role it plays in keeping the diaspora of Umu Aro connected. During his tenure, Eze Aro, His Royal Majesty, Mazi Vincent Okoro, CFR, and his cabinet attended the May 2001 conference in Washington DC, and later visited Houston and New York City.

As an honor for his meritorious and outstanding services, he was made a patron. Suffice to say that the formation of All Aro USA was instrumental in the establishment of the All Aro USA Medical Center in Arochukwu.

During my Presidency of All Aro USA, the late Mazi Nwosu Okoro in his bid to think homeward advised me to secure a passport and visa for Eze Ibom Isii, HRH Kanu Nwa Kanu, so as to accompany Eze Ezeagwu HRH Okoroafor Uroh Okoroafor, who had earlier visited the to attend our Conference in Washington DC. And it was due to his words of wisdom that these Royal fathers were able to grace the occasion.

I must confess that I found a dear friend, a mentor, an ally as well as a thorough bred Aro man in Mazi Nwosu Okoro. He loved Aro and took pride in his community; this was very clear in all his actions.

It is with great sadness that I write this tribute for I know that we have lost an icon and leader.

My heart and sincerest condolences go to his family and friends whom have indubitably lost a wonderful father, husband and confidant in Mazi Nwosu Okoro. Take comfort.

On behalf of All Aro USA, Umu Aro both at home and abroad and the entire Arochukwu Constituency, I want to say that we will all miss this great Aro man who came, saw and conquered. Adieu!

On April 10 2019, I was woken up by a phone call and the caller in a whispering, shrill voice, informed me that you passed away from a ghastly motor accident at Umunede. I cried uncontrollably, still hoping that it was not true. But just before I could process the sad news I was confronted with the gruesome picture of the accident scene.

W

e cannot question our God who summoned you so soon. We are inundated with questions but no answers. What is the closure? However, we remain resolute on the understanding that you are resting in the bosom of Almighty God. We are consoled by your impeccable record of achievement in just 64 years of your life on earth.

During your life you excelled as a father, husband,

brother, uncle, not to mention the number of years you mentored pharmacy students, pharmacists and your invaluable service to patients in your place of practice.Your contribution to the development of Ndianiche Uno and Arondizuogu is unparallel. You consistently provided healthcare to the less privileged in our community, took care of widows, and the poor amongst us.Your philanthropic activity has left a vacuum in our community and beyond.

The last discussion I had with you on April 4 centered on your developmental plans for our community.

Death may have snatched you away from us but it

cannot dampen the light you shone, the succor you provided to those who needed a shoulder to lean on. So “death where is your sting”. The grave’s silence is deafening, darkness has set forth but your legacy brightens the atmosphere. We cannot but celebrate your life and times. mmanuel Ohuabunwa is currently a resident physician in the Department of Emergency and Trauma Medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital.

Emmanuel graduated DeBakey High School for Health Professions with the Most Outstanding Senior Award, the Gold medal for volunteer service and the coveted Principal’s award. He also received the Gates Millennium Scholars Award, which offered him a full-ride scholarship to attend Johns Hopkins University. While at Hopkins, Emmanuel assisted professors in teaching classes in the Neuroscience department.

He went on to graduate Johns Hopkins University with a record 3.98 GPA in Neuroscience and Psychology—a feat that made waves around the world and resulted in Emmanuel receiving awards from various organizations for his commitment to academic excellence and community service. Some of these include: the “Scholar of the year Award” by the African Diaspora Award organization and the “Top Nigerian-American Youth of the Year 2013” by the Christian Association of Nigerian-Americans. During the CANAN awards ceremony, Emmanuel was honored to meet the former president of Nigeria, His Excellency Professor Goodluck Jonathan, who congratulated him for making Nigeria proud.

fter graduating University, Emmanuel received admission to every medical school he applied to including: Harvard, Yale, Hopkins, and Columbia. By God’s grace, he received a full-ride scholarship to attend Yale University for a combined Doctor of Medicine and Masters in Business Administration degree. While at Yale, Emmanuel continued to fuel his passion for motivating minority youths to pursue greater exploits both in the US and Nigeria.

In 2013, Emmanuel co-hosted the 20th Annual Granuum fundraiser to support pipeline programs geared at increasing recruitment of minority high school students to careers in healthcare professions. Emmanuel also served as a keynote speaker during the Yale Minority Association for Pre-Medical Students (MAPS) Medical School Fair. He served on a panel geared at preparing incoming 3rd year medical students to navigate challenges to the learning climate during their rotations and as a moderator for a panel of thought leaders in healthcare during the 2016 Yale Healthcare Conference.

n 2014, he was featured in an article in Punch Newspapers, one of Nigeria’s top publishing companies, showing gratitude for the opportunities availed him at Yale while imploring the Nigerian Youth to see their skin color not as an impediment to success but a call to work harder than everyone else. In 2016, a profile of Emmanuel was aired on Kilimandjaro radio station, with listeners across Africa, speaking about the education system in Nigeria and providing advice on how to thrive in this system. In 2017, a profile of Emmanuel was featured on Vineyard TV coinciding with the launching of his book titled, “Every Step Counts, Don’t Waste It! The steps of a heart of gratitude”.

While completing his hectic Residency, Emmanuel currently serves on the Executive Committee for the African

Research Academies for Women (ARA-W), an organization tasked at increasing recruitment of young African girls into careers in science and technology. In 2016, Emmanuel, in conjunction with the executive board (ARA-W), received the prestigious Volunteer Service Award from the President of the United States, Barack Obama, an honor that was indeed one of Emmanuel’s proudest moments.

Dr. Florence

Adanma Kanu is a Houston native with varied experience in the field of maternal and child health (MCH) epidemiology including epidemiologic surveillance of Georgia women who delivered a live infant.

Dr. Kanu received her PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Georgia in May 2018. She was recently the MCH Surveys Team Lead within the Epidemiology Section at the Georgia Department of Public Health where she served as the Principal Investigator and Epidemiologist for the Georgia Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) and oversaw Oral Health Surveillance including the 3rd Grade and Head Start Basic Screening Surveys.

In July 2019, Dr. Kanu will be sworn in as an incoming Epidemic

Intelligence Service (EIS) Officer and will begin her 2-year service with the International Micronutrient Malnutrition Prevention and Control Team (IMMPaCt) within the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The IMMPaCt Program works with global partners to eliminate vitamin and mineral deficiencies such as iron, vitamin A, iodine, folate, and zinc among vulnerable populations throughout the world. EIS is CDC’s globallyrecognized fellowship program and long-standing model of worldwide public health in action. EIS officers respond to a multitude of major health threats, from the threat of bioterrorism during the Korean War era in the early 1950s to the Zika virus outbreak in 2016.
