Sharing Love February is here, bringing Valentine’s Day, and with it dozens of tiny paper cards to help our children sign, little packages of heart-shaped candies all over the place, and messages of romance and affection. Everywhere we look, there are reminders of love. Although you may find the whole Valentine’s Day thing to be clichéd, it can be a good time to look at how love plays out in your life. In your role as a mom, love just comes with the territory. Every time you hold a child, wipe away a tear, read a story, or tuck a little one into bed at the end of the day, you express love to a precious child. Your rewards may include drawings, songs, big smiles and enthusiastic hugs and kisses. While children are young, at least, the “I love you’s” come easily to you and to them. Then there’s the rest of the family – spouses, parents, siblings and so forth – the people who are so important, but to whom love can sometimes be harder to convey. Still, you usually know the “currency” of your relatives. Perhaps your mom likes nothing more than having some one-on-one time together. Maybe your sister loves a phone call, or your brother a newsy e-mail. Your husband… well, this is a family publication. At any rate, the hard part is often just making the time for the things that are important to each of these people, so that the love you feel is tangible to THEM, not just to you, in your head. Letting your friends know how much they mean to you is often easier; since friendships are voluntary, it’s almost a given that the time friends spend together affirms the value that each person places on the other. But there’s one more person who needs to be considered when you think about love, who is probably easier to overlook than anyone – YOU. You undoubtedly do so much for so many others, but are you taking the time that you really need, just to nurture yourself? Moms will often say that there just isn’t any time left in the day, after caring for everyone else, but the truth behind that statement is that they don’t MAKE time. Moms need to put as much value on themselves as on everyone else, and spend time accordingly. Every day, ideally, you should try to set aside at least a few minutes to read a good book, take a warm bath, go for a walk, or do whatever will make you feel taken care of. And you can’t wait for someone else to suggest it, give it to you, or make it happen – it has to be up to you, and you have to make it a priority. If you can do this, even amidst your busy life, you’ll have more to offer to everyone else, you’ll be a happier mom, and you’ll just feel better. Then you won’t mind so much when you have to help your kids with all those little paper Valentine’s Day cards. Karen Harvey, CEC, is a certified life coach who helps moms create more satisfying lives through balancing their many roles and making the most of each day.
