Tired of Yelling? Shift into Reverse... If you’re a parent, you know that disciplining children can be hard.

Tired of Yelling?

I’ll never forget when my daughter, about two-and-a-half at the time, had a full-blown temper tantrum in Target. Up to that point, I thought my husband and I had the discipline thing all figured out. I'm embarrassed to admit that I never thought my child would prostrate herself on the floor in the middle of a store, kicking and screaming. Boy, was I humbled.

And it’s easy to lose your patience and yell when you’re faced with a situation like that. In fact, I think that’s how I handled it that day--by picking my daughter up, carrying her out of the store, then yelling at her to stop. Several temper tantrums and another child later, I’ve learned a couple of things about discipline. And, even though I’m no expert, I’ve found that "shifting into reverse"--doing the opposite of yelling—really works, especially as my kids have gotten older. When my son or daughter misbehave or do something they shouldn’t, instead of raising my voice, I'll lower it. By pulling them aside and talking to them quietly, it seems to create a “pause moment” that helps them to more easily acknowledge and change their behavior. And it sure beats yelling.

Shift into Reverse...

Does this mean I never lose my patience? I wish. And does this approach work every time, with every child? Of course not. There are times, depending on the situation, that this approach may not be the best. It also of course depends on the age and temperament of your child. But when our kids understand that we will follow through on what we say (i.e.“if you don’t stop throwing your toy, I’m going to take it away”, and then we do take it away if they throw it again), this approach, though quiet, works. And it eliminates the need to raise your voice. Which, in turn, makes disciplining a whole lot more peaceful for everyone.
