In our OTT times, [“OTT (over-the-top) is a means of providing film content and television over the internet at the request and to suit the requirements of the individual consumer”], the single screen theatre is an anachronism that continue to thrives in some parts of Bangalore and has been replaced with different uses in various other locations.

• Density of hotels and lodges is more towards the majestic transport hub to cater to the floating population and keeps decreasing as we move farther away from it.

The boundary on the south-west is marked by junction of gubbi thotadappa road and tank bunk road.

In this studio, we will be studying sites of defunct theatres in the region of Bangalore and their surroundings.

Based on their study and analysis of the selected theatre (history, context, significance and also relevance), students will be invited to decide whether to replace the theatre with a more pressing need of that precinct or rebuild the theatre with additional activities that cater to the changing needs of that precinct.

The outcome of studio would be Architecture which resonates programmatically and spatially with immediate and also extended surroundings. Thus, the project must not only work in itself as a relevant programmatic response, but it also has to generate an appropriate interface between the building with the public realm. Here treatment of the architectural design’s public edges takes on added significance, and we turn for guidance to urban design theory for relevant lenses, for language and tools with which to study, comprehend and analyze the sites.

Pedestrian walkways along commercial fronts facing theatres can be shaded with the streets along such edges narrating the scenes of popular movies of Kannada Film Industry that created records during their release in the iconic single screen theatres.

Use of prayer wheels to serve as a musical element producing tuning and rhythm based upon the speed of rotation and the number of people engaged.

The potential building facades that can serve to accommodate digital screens that can present the teasers of upcoming movies, old posters of famous movies, etc.

Potential area where edges of footpaths could be used to narrate the stories of Veteran Actors of Kannada film industry without blocking the concept of eyes on the street.

Potential area for use as public plaza catering to help it merge well into the street of eateries and lodges and serving as space for street dance, street plays, street bands and young talents to showcase their capabilities.

Spaces in front of the theatres could serve to be film bazaar showcasing rich content to potential buyers supported by the retail activities.​ These spaces could also serve for street plays, film artists, etc.

Design Intent It basically refers to creating an entertainment centre where th narration of spaces is non - linear and the user becomes a participant rather than just a spectator in an entertainment district through a cinema museum for the Kannada film industry.

02 AAROGYA SAMAH Health and Wellness Centre Built Up : 2400 sq. m.

The Ayurvedic cum yoga block has been left semi - open to promote a fine connection with nature as a therapist and is provided with a small kitchen and dining space to cater to the requirements of the medical staff, the patients, the people indulged in yoga and nature therapy activities and the visitors or family members of the patients and adequate parking space has been provided for the ambulance and the two wheelers.

Two in house general medical stores have been provided, one catering to the ayurvedic medicines and the other catering to the regular medicines (Allopathy).

Sanrachna : Reinstating Meaningfulness Architecture can be defined as arrangement of spaces experienced and influenced by the user group thereby allowing for cultural continuity. The building and the combination of buildings create the settlements and these all together represent the physical platforms of social interactions.

Covering an area of 4200 sqm, the proposed site is situated in the small town of Hosaholalu, and is located 2km away from the town Krishnarajapete in Mandya district of Karnataka, India.

An attempt has been made to promote the very use of local materials like Mangalore tiles for the roofing and use of Wooden trusses has been promoted despite the availability of steel trusses to promote the workmanship of community at the Hosaholalu village.

The brick walls have been given an Exposed Brick Masonry appearence. The window frames and shutters are amde up of wood with sloping chajjas provided with Mangalore tiles as the roofing for the chajjas.

Keeping in mind health and wellness aspect, the landscaping at the site has been given special attention thereby making an attempt towards providing a very welcoming, homely and a positive atmosphere of environment.

The site is nearby to the Ayurvedic centre along the highway leading to nearby Krishnarajendra Market. The focus was on undertsanding the existing meaning embedded in the existing built fabric and the existing living pattern to respond to the needs of rural issues of health and hygiene and its physical manifestation in the form of built intervention that gives the inhabitants of the settlement, access to comprehensive, affordable and quality primary health care facilities.

The exploration began with the understanding of the significance of the attributes of vernacular architecture prevalent at Hosaholalu and the social logic of the space based on the convex mapping exercise thereby making an attempt to decipher the meaning which isembedded in the spatial arrangement of the context along with its historical background into consideration.

The centre aims at providing general health check-up, maternity and paediatric facilities, 24*7 emergency services , oral services and optometric services, an in-house residential facility to accomodate the working staff, etc.

The central open to sky courtyard aims to serve as a healing space for the patients that not only allows them to maneouver but also interact with other patients and also spned quality time with their family members.

The public realm of the centre along with the private blocks have been organised such that the one flows from the private to the public and the public realm does connects itself with the ayuvedic and yoga centre and the residential facility such that a common means of public engagement and transition comes into the picture.

The two diagrams showcase the orientation of the site in the larger context defining the sun path diagram along the site and directional pattern of wind across the site.

The site also features a slope that has lead to the formation of channels due to surface runoff of water along those channels and these narrow channels do not portray any green grass cover.

The accessbility diagram to the site basically does explain that it becomes difficult– to access the site – with ease due to riding in opposite direction of traffic movement, rather it would be much more comfortable both w.r.t the user and the traffic management that one goes up to the signal at end of Old Madras Road, take a U- Turn and then take left on to the Baiyappanahalli Road to thereby access the site.

Abundance of green cover in and around the site serves as a positive aspect which could be used in design building around the trees without bringing down any of them.

Longitudinal Section to the site

Covering an area of 12700 sqm, the site is located along the Old Madras Road in Bangalore, Karnataka, behind the Swami Vivekananda Metro Station ( North of Swami Vivekananda Metro Station ). One of the access roads to the site is also along the Baiyappanahalli Road in Bangalore. The site showcases an abundance in green cover with trees having wider canopies thereby portraying efficient spots for social interaction and sport activities like cricket, football, etc. The Old Madras Road features very heavy traffic due to the presence of the Swami Vivekananda Metro Station. The site ideally portrays adequate wide footpaths provided for easy commute of the pedestrains along the busy congested Old Madras Road and the Baiyappanahalli Road.

The immediate context of the site portrays important building like the Isolation Hospital, the Epidemic Disease Hospital and the office of the District Surgeon in Bengaluru while along the opposite end of the Old Madras Road we have the Karnataka Institute of Endocrinology and Research, the offic eof the District Health Officer, Banaglore Urban, the Arthritis Care Centre and also a paid public parking space. The rear side of the site that is towards the residential community also consists of a small Hindu temple, a corporation water tank superstructure currently houses an abandoned cluster of sloped roof built masses that have varied stories of engagement with the commuters, the users and the neighbours to the site. The site is also frequented by domestci aniamls like cows left alone by their owners for grazing all around.

The shown posters basically present an attempt to give an abstract idea about how such a calm welcoming and potentially socially active space exists amidst the congested and busy area along the Old Madras Road and the Baiyappanahalli Road. They also talk about how this site serves as a buffer space or transition zone between the busy and noisy major streets of the city and the quiet, peaceful residential settlements on the other end of the site.

VISUAL NAVIGATION

MOVEMENT

An attempt has been made to provide a highly penetrable environment with multiple entries which allows easy flow between the exterior and interior environment facilitating a break in the facade and allowing for a more breatheable space to the occupants. An attempt has also been made to provide access points that are relateable in terms of coinciding along the same axial element. There is a central courtyard which is provisioned with full fledged natural lighting. An attempt has also been made to make use of prayer wheels along the curved boundary walls to invoke a sensorial aspect of rhythm and tone when rotated by the inhabitants.

04 ATHULYAM Community Housing Built Up : 2400sq. m.

Sem IV, Academic Work Site : Jamawadi village, South of Kheri Gangan, Hansi District, Haryana Studio Mentors : Bakul Jani, Archita B, Smruti Balvalli, Rajrupa Kundu Saha

Covering an area of 3500sqm, the site is located in a very small village in terms of area that is connected to main town of Hansi through the Hansi Narnaud Road, first entering Sheikhpura and then into Hansi town.

The site is located towards outskirts of the Jamawadi village with its closeness to the cultivated farmlands and fields, Baba Raju Nath Mandir and Shiv Mandir along with water bodies that serve as gathering grounds for people and for collection of water for their domestic use or even for cultural purposes keeping in mind, the temple premises so special care is taken of the water bodies of the village.

The design brief talks about development of housing for a mixed community that has its predominance in terms of occupation at Jamawadi Village.

The design brief also talks about a community space which serves as a semi-open space for people to gather thereby promoting social interaction among the sole members of the community housing despite being from varied income groups and irrespective of caste, gender, age, religion, etc.

A typical study of the built form and the daily practices prevalent in the village showcases the simple lifestyle of the inhabitants of the Jamawadi Village.

The housing project here is dedicated to a community of small farmers, potters and priests who do hold the position as landlords and large farmers.

People used to sit on the floor in the aangan of the house while eating and the same aangan was also used for Desi Akhara Wrestling while food was prepared over earthern mounds in earthern pots once a day.

The space under the wooden staircases was generally used for storage purpose while living space was spacious enough to accomodate varied activities being carried out by different members of the household.

The terraces were used as resting spaces with charpai serving as the bed along with provision of drinking water in an earthern pot while activities like kite flying mostly occupied the sky and the terrace during the day.

The Housing comprises of 22 units with 12 smaller units belonging to a mix of small farmers and potters, 6 medium units belonging to a mix of small farmers and potters and 4 large units belonging to a mix of priests and landlords.

The women had to travel larger distances for collecting water for the household work and were also indulged in making cowdung cakes during the day which was later used as the cooking fuel or for ritual purposes.

Cluster 1 Human Movement The Cluster 1 basically showcases a mix of four small units designed to meet the requirements of small farmers and potters where provision of separate spaces for cattle and pottery making, baking, storage and selling have been provided. This space of the potters has been provided exposure to the main road to facilitate the growth of the business and allow for the carts carrying raw materials to the pottery space or earthern pots from the pottery space to the market, an ease of accessibility. The space has also been provided for easy movement of domestic animals like cows and buffaloes in and out of the backyards of the respective houses to grazing grounds, fields, etc.

Human Movement

Cluster 2 showcases a mix of two smaller units and three medium sized units where the central space between the five households becomes a hotspot and pause point of community interaction mainly because of the verandah spaces that are facing each other along with sufficient spaces for easy movement of domestic animals in and out of the backyards of the households. The staircases are external staircases on the rear side of the built form.

The site level plan here would showcase as to how the central open space in and around the community space would cater to the varied activities of the inhabitants and serve as playing area, area for domestic household work for the women, picnic spots, cattle grazing, etc.

The inhabitants of the village either had mattresses on the ground for seating as well as sleeping or made use of charpai for teh purpose.

An attempt has been made to allow kitchens to face each other to thereby promote interaction amongst the women of the community.

The dwellings possess verandahs with jaali windows thereby being used as storage spaces for grains or used for evening interactions with neighbours.

05 PRAVAAHARA Community Cafe Built Up : 500sq. m.

The surroundings of the site are occupied with people who do indulge in physical exercises and morning or evening walks and also children who find it mesmerizing playing along the river bed.

This activity is further supported at the site by the poor vehicular traffic along the adjacent narrow streets which leads to lesser noise levels as compared to that along the major streets.

The presence of trees and cool breeze emerging from the river could help facilitate in the natural ventilation of the community cafeteria and enhance the micro-climate of the site thereby seeking to provide relaxation and calmness from stressful work life to commuters and users.

Covering an area of 500 sqm, the site is located in a sparsely built surrounding in Mahakal Pally, Janta Nagar, Siliguri, West Bengal. The project attempts to utilize potential area along the river bed and provide people with a community cafeteria that would not only promote social interaction among commuters but also provide them with a welcoming experience due to its calm location and teh exposure to the river. Choosing the location along the banks of the river would also promote for the hygeinic development of the river banks as part of government proposals.

The idea behind providing a deck was to allow the users to feel associated with it and experience the flowing shimmering water as a sensorial aspect with their feet dipped in it along with the promotion of certain activities like fishing, boating, etc.

The site currently serves as a pause point for cart pullers and rickshaw pullers and as a parking space for two and four wheelers. The site also possesses hawkers and street vendors due to its close proximity to the very significant Surya Sen Park.

The site showcases a mixed use front with ground floor serving as the commercial shops and the subsequent upper floors serving as residential units. The mixed use front experiences greater amount of pedestrian traffic particularly during the early mornings and during the late evenings mainly centered due to the presence of landmark Surya Sen Park. The narrow streets adjacent to the site are more centric to two wheeler vehicular traffic.

The concept of an open to sky lobby with Pergolas was taken into consideration for the first floor to provide exposure of the mesmerizing river front to the users thereby stating that the levels have been created to lay visual emphasis on the river.

Section Along CC’ The use of circular columns do not create any edge hindrance to the sight of the user allowing for an obstacle free view of the surroundings.

The sliding glass panels add a sense of transparency between the semi open space and the space completely open to the sky.

High density high moisture resistant boards can be used for the deck along with the zinc coated I section columns used for the deck support.

The zinc coating allows for waterproofing of the I section columns from the corossive property of the river water.

The HDHMR boards are available for low costs and the construction process of such boards uses fibre chips taken from the plantation trees, agriculture waste and 95% of forest wood waste with fibre chips pressed together with a special glue forming a single layer, giving a robust and tough high density board. The pressing technique creates a unique water resistance layer through the board.

06 VASANAM Iconic Baluchari Weaving and Informative Centre Built Up : 450 sq. m.

Bishnupur is a town in the Bankura district of West Bengal and located at about 132 km from Kolkata. Bishnupur town has prospered in the 17th and early 18th centuries and was ruled by a line of Hindu Rajas of the Malla dynasty.

Bishnupur, the temple town is welcoming you with its lavish heritage, proud culture, brilliant architecture and tales of terracotta.

At an average temperature of 31°C, May is the hottest month of the year. The lowest average temperatures in the year occur in January, when it is around 18° C .

It lies to the south of the Dwarkeshwar river which is a major tributary to Damodar river.

The objective is to provide a detailed and an in depth insight of the rich history and tradition of very specific weaving of the the Baluchari Butidar Silk Sarees, the Siteart no.17that was brought about around 200 years ago Bishnupur, in 1704Bankura

by Murshid District, WestQuli Bengal Khan , the then Nawab of Bengal.

The focus user group basically circulates around the tourists visiting the town of Bishnupur, West Bengal and the localites imparting them with necessary procedure of weaving this rich silk saree in its originality which thereby would also be playing a significant role in the revival process.

The Designed Centre would provide infographics about the various loom weaving techniques that have contributed their effort into the weaving of the saree since 1704 and how the evolution helped in increasing the production capacity from 3 sarees a year to 52 sarees a year.

It would give an insight into the physical existence of the so labelled oldest weaving loom and how its existence had the true Baluchari character on the sarees .

The Designed Centre would provide an in depth insight into the various motifs that have been used in Baluchari saris and their evolution over the past 200 years mainly starting from the depiction of : • Nawab sitting on throne and nobles positioned at respective places, Nawabs lying on bed with cup of wine while a girl is dancing supported by musicians, Royal noble dress, etc.

• 1957 also saw the introduction of Ajanta – Ellora cave paintings as motifs • Temples of Teracotta of Bishnupur also had a major influence on the saris with mythological stories woven on them copied from temple panels • Panels of paiseley motifs in cnetre of pallu • Kalka motifs on borders
