This portfolio showcases selected works produced by Damini Sachdeva in the years of her Architectural and BIM studies.

Architecture lets you express your emotion, BIM helps you achieve it and sustainability provides vigor to it. The intersection and cross relation of these disciplines is where my passion lies, where these fields are inseparable and correlate in every way to complement and support each other. An inquisitive and enthusiastic sustainable BIM Architect with an experience of a year of working in an Architecture and Interior Design firm.

A certified LEED GA and an in process LEED BD+C professional, I am seeking a position in an association, where I can utilize and develop my aptitudes to gain comprehension and provide my assistance, by braving the standard and applying data-centric methods and technologies of practice in the life-cycle management of buildings in the innovative and evolving AEC field.

ACADEMIC WORK

Teams and Roles- There are different roles and responsibilities that represent how a real BIM project can work. Every team member playing their role is held accountable for their work and responsibilities, and there is a lesser loss of information. Each person can have one or more roles depending on his interests.

BIM Goals and Uses- To begin developing the plan for utilizing BIM on the project during construction, we must first review the client requirements in the contract and special considerations of the project. Then determine what the goals of BIM are, and which BIM uses are applicable.

BIM Execution Plan- The document that dictates the project in terms of process, BIM uses, deliverables, standards, information, scope and technology to be used.

MODELING W inter 2 0 2 0 | O ttawa BIM-LM-1st and 2nd Semester Algonquin College Tools- Autodesk Revit, Point Cloud, Photoshop, The goal of this project was to provide an as-built BIM to the Algonquin College Construction Research Centre. To model all architectural and structural components such as Walls, Doors, Ceilings, Roofs, Windows, Furniture etc. An LOD table, based on the BIM Forum Template was also made and provided.

3D COORDINATION W inter 2 0 2 0 | Ottawa BIM-LM-1st and 2nd Semester Algonquin College Tools- Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, Revizto, Photoshop 3D Model taken from the Auto Cad sample models. To achieve comprehensive and preemptive coherence of design and construction, it is important within each discipline to be coordinated as it is across all disciplines, drawing types etc. Also, incoherent design is costly and time consuming to rectify in design and construction. BIM assists coordination in two ways. BIM can facilitate Computer automation and Computer assistance. To make model reviews more effective we reviewed the model before the meeting, highlighted issues we found to save time, planned the order of issues, thought about some solutions to the problem, and the issues that required multiple stakeholders, were shared with them first to make the meeting more productive. We added color to differentiate within the Heating system, Cooling system, Steel structure, Concrete structure.

We used the model to convey Design issues, Clashes/coordination and the Design intent.

Cost Management in Construction is defined as “a process of planning, estimating, co-ordination, control and reporting of all cost re project initiation up to the time of an asset’s eventual disposal”. It must account all types of costs that are incurred by the facility over BIM model is created when we add a schedule to the 3D BIM model. ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL WORK

LIVING MUSEUM Wi nte r 2019 | Ottawa Green Architecture-2nd Semester Algonquin College Tools- Autodesk Revit, Lumion 3D, SketchUp, Photoshop Zibi means “river” in Anishinabemowin, the language of the Algonquin First Nations. The project was initiated by Windmill, Zibi, in Ottawa. To incorporate heritage into the present by connecting the capital and creating a themed space that celebrates and pays homage to the history and culture and lets the audience relive it. The main objective of the project was to define scope of adaptive reuse in the existing heritage structures which had their variety of usage in the historical time line. The research focused on the culture of Aboriginal groups and the hydro-power generation through the Chaudière falls on the western arena. The design was such formulated to highlight the importance of these two factors through a pathway led to experience the cultural era of the aboriginal people, hydro power zone and then entering into the innovation zone to depict transition into the futuristic approach. The aim of the project was to design a visitor center which was to be used as a living museum. This was achieved through levels of sustainability in terms of structure, heritage, health, economy, etc.

FARMHOUSE Fa l l 2018 | Ottawa Green Architecture-1st Semester Algonquin College Tools- Autodesk AutoCAD, Autodesk Revit, Lumion 3D, SketchUp, Adobe Photoshop The project was assigned by the National Capital Commission, Canada. The challenge was to design a new farmhouse for a family of four on the site of a historic farm on land owned by the NCC, within Ottawa’s Greenbelt. The house was to accommodate a married couple, and their two young children. They wanted to start a fruit and vegetable farm, selling their produce to local stores, restaurants, and the public. The design was intended to be a demonstration project to show the general public the benefits of sustainable design. The house was prefabricated off-site and assembled on site. In the interests of sustainability, the floor area of the house was kept to a minimum, while comfortably accommodating the program. We were encouraged to explore creative ways that the rooms and their furnishings, may be multi-purpose or flexible, in order to economize on space and allow for future changes in family living arrangements.

MASS TIMBER ENVELOPES Prefabr icat i o n | W i nte r 2019 | Ottawa Green Architecture-2nd Semester- Applied Research Project Algonquin College Tools- Ubakus, Sefaira, Carbon Calculator, Lumion 3D, Autodesk AutoCAD, SketchUp, Photoshop The purpose of this project was to study various mass timber prefabricated construction techniques and carry out a detailed comparative analysis between the client’s prototype and generic wall through energy modeling software. The project defines the scope of mass timber prefabrication strategies and techniques and study in detail the types of mass timber available in the market. It revolves around the importance of CLT panels. The client proposed a temporary structure for the Ottawa winter market which comprises of CLT panel prefabricated construction joineries. The project aim was then defined to create a permanent structure made up of CLT panels and more insulated wall assemblies. The prefabrication strategies applied for its joineries lead to reach to a design of a tiny house which is a habitat for one person.

The design focuses on the sustainable aspect of the materials availability and is responsive to the context. The proposed prototype of panels and their placements make the structure sturdy to host a habitable space.

The three walls when compared, depict different numbers in terms of R-values. The prototype 3 has the highest thermal resistance followed by the developed prototype. The stud wall has the least thermal resistance. This is because the prototype 3 comprises of all wood systems. The drying days for the prototype 3 and the developed systems are high as compared to the stud wall generic systems because the wood takes time to dry when the moisture penetrates. The amount of carbon capture is the highest in prototype 3 as it all comprises of wood and the least in stud wall as there are other components in its assembly. The life cycle costing compared justifies the fact that wood is sustainable in terms of many factors and is aiding in carbon sequestering to create a healthy environment to live in.

THE BIOTOPE Fa l l 2018 | Ottawa Green Architecture-1st Semester Algonquin College Tools- Lumion 3D, SketchUp, Adobe Photoshop The WATER retreat caters to a young bachelor architect and enthusiast who is an adventurous traveller and risk taker in terms of enjoying natural beauty. He wishes to escape occasionally to an abode for self awareness and experience. The 12 units similarly as a community are situated in the middle of the Ottawa river between two existing islands, Merrill and Nichols, which are accessible only through boats. Each unit further is made of steel containers and consists of all the amenities in a 20 square meter area. The units are only accessible through water vehicles. Considering the basic elements (circulation, geometry, parti, hierarchy, separation of public and private space etc.) the circulation and other supporting space was provided including and not limiting it to a communal gathering space. These isolated habitats for enthusiasts are a place to enjoy summers.

NEELA HAUZ W i nte r 2014 | I nd i a Bachelor of Architecture-Landscape Trophy (NASA) Chitkara University Tools- Autodesk AutoCAD, Lumion 3D, SketchUp, Photoshop Shortlisted in Top 21 out of 200 entries. The purpose was to present an analysis of a public/semi-public space that routinely transforms as per the varied socio-cultural requirements while retaining its physical boundaries and landscape setting and choosing a site with an inherent potential of similar character, suffering due to lack of spirit and transformative character and thereby propose design intervention in order to transform the site into a vibrant space. Nestling at the foothills of the Shivalik Hills, Sukhna Lake is a silent and soulful companion to the city and its people. Le Corbusier envisaged it as a ‘ZONE OF PEACE’ which would attract people from all walks of life for the ‘Care of Body and Spirit’. The lake mirrors the rhythm of nature in its ever-changing hues of light playing on the water, the flight of the birds, lush green forests and resplendent blue hills beyond. Through the years, the lake has become an integral part of the psyche and consciousness of thousands of Chandigarh’s residents who throng it’s serene environs and drink deep of it’s rejuvenating sights and sounds. With changing hours of the day and changing seasons, the lake provides new frames and experiences. From a silvery sheet of water upon which rays of the sun dance like confetti, to a shawl of mist on a cold winter day, it mesmerizes with its myriad moods. And at night it glimmers with the twinkling stars of the heaven.

THE LIVEWIRE INC. Fa l l 2017 | I ndi a Professional Experience, Location- Delhi, India Studio 6 Apart Tools- Autodesk AutoCAD, SketchUp, Rhino, Photoshop The brief was to design a luxury electronics and technology retail store. The store was to house a featuring wall of custom phone cases, headphones, and other electronic items and had two floors. The design and execution of the basement floor was my responsibility. I was involved in the development of design from the beginning to handover. The design challenge was to be able to fit everything in a luxurious but at the same time displayable manner. The basement floor also housed an office area and a little storage space.

THE ESCAPE, BREWERY S u m m e r 2017 | I nd i a Professional Experience, Location- Chandigarh, India Studio 6 Apart Tools- Autodesk AutoCAD, SketchUp, Photoshop The challenge was to design a five-storey brewery with a terrace as well.

The basement included the dance room and a party hall whereas the rest of the floors included seating and an amphitheater area. It also included a small brewery inside, which was further divided and designed according to the space requirement and bylaws of the building. I was a part of the design and handover of the Basement, Ground and Second floor of the entire space. The theme was that of an old English brewery, hence explained in the design, furniture and electrical fixtures.

In educational institutes one spends long period of one’s life,and therefore,their infrastructure needs architecture that goes beyond simple functionalism where the architect must have a certain concern for stimulation of mind,awareness and overall well being of the occupant. The aspects of lighting, color,choice of materials,the linkages of different zones, creation of enclosed courts and open landscapes are essential. The entire physical presence of the institute-the campus needs to be integrated in a continued fabric. The main planning has been done keeping in mind the user group and their needs and based on that building functions have been grouped and have been provided access to. Since the site is located in Kurukshetra, India where climate is varying in different seasons thermal comfort becomes one of major challenge.

It is basically about taking advantage of natural environment while fulfilling needs of the user. Courtyards provide central open spaces which can be used by students as informal spaces to work and interact. The open space makes significant impact in complete campus. The auditorium has been placed in a manner that it is easily accessible by students as well as visitors.

Physical Infrastructure in Ramnagar Village Out of the two main entities of the village,first one is the Toba (water pond) which serves many purposes. The water is used for irrigation and bathing of animals. A water tank situated on the northern side serves the clean water to the whole village. Absence of proper drainage system leads to engaging lot of water borne diseases as it is drained into the water pond. A paved sitting area located in front of the gurudwara, around the peepal tree is of great significance as d place of justice� where decisions are taken by the Panchayat of Ramnagar.

Narrow unpaved streets does not always allow the farmer’s vehicles to get through easily. Roads are too narrow for tractors.

The sewage from all the houses is carried by underground drain pipe. Although man holes are provided at regular intervals on the streets, but they aren't covered. This sewage water is disposed off in the nearby wet land "Toba".

There are two Gurudwaras.

Both of them have a specific opening and closing time. Also, there are two "Peers", one for Hindus and one for Muslims.

Electricity provided by government is Rs. 2/unit. Every house has its own meter. Electricity cuts are fluctuating.

In summers the cuts are for a longer duration while in winters they are less.

It also included a bar, a lap pool,and a luxurious seating area. I was a part of the design and handover of the Basement design and furniture selection. The theme was very luxurious and included the use of a rich and luxurious material palette.

Hotel Maya The design was that of two basements which were to be further used as banquet halls. The entire space consisted of flexible partitions and could be molded in It also included a bar, a lap pool,and a luxurious seating area which was further divided and designed according to the space. I was a part of the design and handover of the Basement design and furniture selection. The theme was very minimalistic but luxurious at the same time and included the use of a rich and luxurious material palette.

Setia Residence The basement design of this residence included a luxurious and modern interior including a bar, storage space underneath the staircase, and a TV room. The challenge was that the space was less according to the functions to be provided inside. I was a part of the design and handover of the Basement design and furniture selection. Also, the material selection for the partitions included cane , mirror cushioned walls etc.
