SBS Will Participate in 2018 Big Day of Giving As we have for the past couple of years, once again the Sacramento Blues Society wil participate in the 2018 version of the nationwide “Big Day of Giving”. If you didn’t already know, Big Day of Giving is a 24-hour online giving challenge that brings together the region’s nonprofit community to help raise much needed unrestricted funds and shine a spotlight on the work nonprofits do to make the Sacramento region the place we call home. For the past few years, the Big Day of Giving and GivingEdge have worked in unison to unite our community, raising more than $23 million for local nonprofits and providing donors the opportunity to learn more about the causes they care about. Big Day of Giving is an opportunity for donors to show their community pride and support the nonprofits that make our region great, and it is also a year-long capacity building program that helps local nonprofits hone their skills in marketing, social media, and board and donor engagement. Each time a participating nonprofit puts these skills to work throughout the year, we consider Big Day of Giving a success!

One of the wonderful aspects of the Big D.O.G. is that sometimes it offers opportunities to have donations matched by philanthropists or organizations, increasing the impact of every donation. This year’s Big D.O.G. occurs on May 3. Typically, that date is usually the date on which the Sac Blues Society holds our BITS Showcase - a perfect opportunity to “multi-task” your support for the SBS by attending the Showcase AND donating to the SBS at the same time! Stay tuned for more information on the BITS Showcase, the Big Day of Giving, and how YOU can join in!

The Sacramento Blues Society (SBS) is one of the oldest blues societies in California, founded in 1979. SBS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation formed to preserve and promote blues music as a art form. SBS has kept the blues tradition alive in the Sacramento area by promoting the local blues music scene, bringing internationally renowned artists to the region and publishing the “Blue Notes” six times a year. SBS is an affiliate member of The Blues Foundation, which honored us with a 2015 Keeping the Blues Alive Award, and provides educational opportunities for young people with The Blues Foundation’s “Blues in The Schools” Program. Board of Directors Meetings - 2nd Tuesday of each Month, 7:00 pm. All SBS Members in good standing are invited to attend. and CD baby. In addition to her BMAs nominations, Miss Freddye is also a nominee for the 2017 Pittsburgh Music Awards for best blues band and best album. Past awards include the 2016 Pittsburgh Music Awards best blues band; 2015 Freedom From Silence, Center for Victims, the 2014 Star Award for VA of Pittsburgh, the 2008 West Virginia Blues Society winner for best blues band and the 2012 Blues Society of Western PA best duo/solo. Miss Freddye also does musical charity work for nonprofits such as the American Cancer Society and Veterans’ groups.

The first blues song recorded by a female vocalist, was sung by Mamie Smith in 1920. The song was “Crazy Blues” and became a hit. Ida Cox began as a vaudeville performer and transformed herself into a blues singer who, along with Gertrude “Ma” Rainey and Bessie Smith, founded the female blues genre. Ma Rainey became known as the “Mother of the Blues” and Bessie Smith was a major influence on the development of the blues in the early twentieth century. Early female blues artists such as Memphis Minnie, Ruth Brown, Koko Taylor, Etta James, Billie Holiday, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and many others blazed the trail for the new influx of women in blues today, including Bonnie Raitt, Ana Popovic, Samantha Fish, Susan Tedeschi, Marcia Ball, Janiva Magness, Ruthie Foster, Beth Hart, Shemikia Copeland, Bettye LaVette and so many more that have become highly visible, formidable talents in today’s blues music scene. Women of the Blues, past and present, in celebrating National Women’s History Month, we salute you and celebrate your many and important contributions to promoting, playing and keeping the blues alive!

James Armstrong Show Review by Ro Bloodwell

Photos by Ro Bloodwell and Ruby Gypsy There’s a lot of great Blues going on in Sacramento. The Bourbon and Blues Series at Momo Lounge is the latest project produced by Swell Productions, bringing some fine talent to The River City. In its fourth month, Mindy Giles has done her part in exposing our fair citizens to local blues talent as well as blues artists from surrounding areas.

Cover Story - Pittsburgh’s Lady of the Blues, and Her Sacramento Area Connection

This was the case with the James Armstrong Band (Los Angeles) as part of this series who gave us a memorable night of Blues. James lives in Illinois, but was born in L.A., and comes from a family of notable music talent and though he’s been playing since the age of 7, he officially started his career at the age of 17 when he began touring the country.

By Freddye Stover and Brandon Bentz, MD (Dr. “B”) In honor of Women’s History Month, we thought we’d feature a new female artist who, while not from our local area, does have a connection to us here in Sacramento. Miss Freddye hails from Pittsburgh, PA, and is a relatively new talent on the Blues scene. But she has ties to the Sacramento area, with the Blue’s Society’s own new Vice President, Dr. "B" (Brandon Bentz) who plays music with her.

In 1996 despite a lifealtering event which left him with the use of only two of his fingers on his left hand, James is one of those Blues artists who’s taken the trials and

Brandon travels to his home town of Pittsburgh at least twice a year. and plays with both Miss Freddye's Blues Band, and her acoustic band, Miss Freddye's Homecookin’ Trio. Dr. "B" also appears on her new CD entitled "Lady of the Blues" as a harmonica backup and song writer of two of the CD's songs. This new CD showcases Miss Freddye's broad array of talent, and has been nominated for two Blue Music Awards this year, the Best Emerging Artist Album and the Koko Taylor Traditional Female Blues artist award. Also appearing on the CD are local great, Andy Santana, and bay area Blues stars, Kid Andersen, John Blues Boyd, Aki Kumar, and June Core. As Pittsburgh's Lady of The Blues, Miss Freddye keeps the blues alive in her native hometown. She started singing at a young age, in the church. The influence of church and her mother's love of the Blues, gave Miss Freddye the beginnings to venture into the world of Blues Music in 1996. She joined BMW (Blues Music Works) under the direction of Big AL Leavitt. In 2002 Miss Freddye formed het own band, "Blue Faze". Several years later, came Miss Freddye's Blues Band and Miss Freddye's Homecookin’ Band. Her major influences include Koko Taylor, Etta James, Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, Big Mama Thorton, Big AL Leavitt, and Bessie Smith. She has two CDs out which are both available on Spotify, Amazon,

tribulations of that event and used them to empower himself and deepen his respect for the Blues. This was profoundly evident in the soul-rooted lyrics and licks of his tune entitled Guitar Angels. The night was an exciting one for me, it having been my first time seeing this artist. His charisma and personable interaction had me hooked from his opening number. His entrance from the back of the room set the tone for what proved to be a great performance. Mixing it up, his “James Taylor-esque” version of the iconic Marvin Gaye tune How Sweet It Is was a blues mash-up of a different kind, giving the audience something unexpected which warranted resounding applause. We also got Robert Palmer’s Addicted to Love and Wilson Pickett’s Don’t Let the Green Grass Fool You, just to name a few cover tunes performed. Mr. Armstrong also gave us some powerhouse blues with the slowed down-low down weeping riffs on Lights Are On But Nobody Home. The crowded house was not shy…hips were swaying when he played the title cut “Blues Been Good to Me” from his latest CD on Catfood Records. Clearly, we got to see and hear that the blues has in fact been good to him, and good to us during the entire evening. James closed out the show with his high-toned, banging groove of “6 Bar City” making a you a true believer in “the power of the Blues” you if you weren’t already! Mad Respect to you Mr. Armstrong for keeping the Blues alive and kicking. We here in Sacramento hope you will come back and share more of what you got with us.

musicians, and just knowing that the music we love is loved around the world, was an inspiration.

Reports from the IBC in Memphis While we sent only one act to compete in the 2018 IBC in Memphis, we’re lucky to have received three articles about the IBC experience. Two came from members of our chosen band, with a third from Val Starr, who went to Memphis to participate in a special Women in Blues event.

Under the heading of "Murphy was an optimist" I had some equipment issues that might have cost us some points. I was using my backup bass, because I didn’t want to entrust Goldie to the airlines. It was working fine when I changed the strings and tweaked the setup at home. So I pull it out of the case, strap it on, plug in and NOTHING. No output at all. The sound man and I did some quick troubleshooting and determined that it was the bass. I’m up there with no clue when this woman who I later found out was in a band coming on after us handed me her Jazz Bass and it got me through that set. Got mine fixed the next day at this great music store and used it that night.

Matt’s Memphis Adventure

By Matt Rainey, SBS’ IBC Representative Memphis was freezing cold, 6 degrees to be exact. On the first night we bundled up and made it to the amazing Clayborn Temple, an old Historic church with the ceiling literally crumbling down, that had a few bands kicking off the week of partying and music. We managed to see a few wonderful and inspiring bands throughout the week. It was nice to run into Ro Harpo and Val Starr and her band the Blues Rocket.

The long and the short of it was that we didn’t make it past the first round, but that just gave us a few days to explore the amazing city of Memphis and also Clarksdale, MS. TJ and I took advantage of being there and played tourist for the remaining time. Highlights were The Stax Museum (my favorite), Sun Records, The Delta Blues Museum and the National Civil Rights Museum.

Did I mention it was freezing cold? So cold that the water pipes had burst in our hotel, leaving us with no hot water for the entire week! The elevators had flooded so we had to go up and down five flights of stairs each time we would leave the room. The stairwell was also flooding, which quickly froze and turned into a slippery mess. The heaters had stopped working in the hotel rooms and we soon realized that we would not be warming up anytime soon. What a true Blues experience we were in for!

Having never been in the South before I didn’t know what to expect, but right from the start we experienced Southern hospitality in a big way. Everyone wanted to talk to you and was ready to help you if you needed it. And the food!!! Every meal we had was great!! So much to see and do, I’d love to go back!

Sweet Memphis Memories

By Val Starr of Val Starr and the Blues Rocket If you are a blues band with aspirations to break out of your local market, then you should seriously consider competing in your hometown IBC, or at least start saving your pennies for a plane fare to Memphis in January. The experience, bar none, is extraordinary, inspirational and invaluable.

Thank you to the Blues Society for sending us on this amazing adventure to showcase our music. We couldn’t have ever done this without you and it was an experience I’ll never forget!

Joe’s Memphis

By Joe Lev, SBS’ IBC Representative We've been back from Memphis for a couple weeks now. Our problems with the hotel have been well documented but the good memories far outweigh the bad. Just being there, on and around Beale Street, was truly amazing. Over 20 venues in a few square blocks! Musicians everywhere, and some of the clubs pump the music outside for the hundreds of people milling around in spite of temperatures that were down in the teens.

Although we did not compete, I was fortunate to perform in two separate showcases this year, The Women In Blues (WIB) Showcase and the Blind Raccoon showcase. The women that perform

Our venue was the Tin Roof. We were on the bill with bands from all over the world: Great Britain; Australia; Ontario, Canada; Fort Worth, Texas; Israel and even a local Memphis band. So many different flavors of the blues, some traditional, some more bluesbased than anything, lots of blues-rock. The camaraderie among the

in the WIB are chosen by lottery to showcase a power-packed 10 minute set. The talent is top notch, the club is packed, and the opportunity to network and befriend other amazing blues women is life-changing. 6

intact while sustaining a subtle driving rhythm. With RW Grigsby's bass keeping it real throughout, the CD is graced by the participation of a number of blues stalwarts. No one overplays, but everyone gives their best on this obvious labor of love. " - Mick Martin

my national blues publicist. My band was able to perform longer here, with the audience largely comprised of society members, promoters, radio djs and blues lovers. This year there were 250 bands from all over the world, competing in 21 clubs on or around Beale St. We were fortunate to catch quite a few showcases, each band or solo/duo act giving it their all. The bands that made it to the finals, in my opinion, were successful in combining talent, originality and unforgettable performances to blues perfection. But the way I see it, everyone, whether they went on to the finals are not, goes home as winners. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the incredible Memphis cuisine. There is mouthwatering BBQ at just about every establishment. One of our favorite meals was down-home chicken and waffles at Miss Polly’s Soul City Café.

“As soon as Beth Grigsby opens her mouth over the harmonica and blues guitar there is no doubt that this is traditional blues music. Based in Sacramento, California, Red’s Blues is busy sharing that traditional blues/roots sound, which has been perfectly captured on their latest release. The bass work by her husband adds tremendously to the sound. With a mix of original and cover songs, Red’s Blues is the cure to those in need of a traditional blues fix, and those that want their roots/Americana music to include traditional blues.” - No Depression

With blues blasting out of every door as you stroll down Beale, a piece of my heart will always remain in Memphis. And you better believe that this blues gal will be back!

2018 Blues Music Awards Nominations Are Out!

The Blues Music Awards are presented by the Blues Foundation, a non-profit organization set up to foster blues heritage. Started in 1980, the BMAs are, according to Offbeat music magazine “universally recognized as the highest accolade afforded musicians and songwriters in blues music”.

The Michael Ray Band – sacblues@hotmail.com; http://

michaelrayblues.com; http://soundcloud.com/michaelrayblues This 2017 Sammie’s Award winner for Best Blues Artist is well on his way to a stalwart career, having toured as the opening act with Robert Cray this past summer, performed at the “Reinvigorating Arts in Sacramento” event hosted by Mayor Steinberg, where he had his “Flame Club Song” recorded by Innovation Sacramento and now after a year of working on his new cd “Raw”, it will be released on April 6th at a CD Release Party at the famous Torch Club. Check out this hot band on April 6th, Sandra and Lauren, vocalists for this cd, will also be performing.

Formerly known as the W. C. Handy Awards (or “The Handys”) the BMAs were renamed in 2006 in an effort to increase public appreciation of the significance of the awards. The awards ceremony typically occurs annually in Memphis, Tennessee, home of the Blues Foundation, although the 2008 award ceremony was held in Tunica, Mississippi. This year’s 39th Blues Music Awards will be held on May 10, 2018 at the Cook Convention Center in Memphis.

Red’s Blues – bethgrigsby@comcast.net You can find this fiery red-head along with hubby RW Grigsby on bass performing just about anywhere you look these days. Their trio includes Dave Earl on guitar and harmonica and the band has HOF member Tim Wilbur on drums. They continuously bring in other artists to perform with them, such as Aki Kumar, Steve Freund, Rusty Zinn, Kyle Rowland, many others.

Leading the nomination pack for this year’s BMAs is our own harmonica wizard Rick Estrin. With his group The Nightcats, Estrin is up for Band of the Year, as well as Album of the Year and Traditional Blues Album for Groovin’ In Greaseland. Estrin, a past BMA winner, is also up for Traditional Blues Male Artist, Best Instrumentalist:Harmonica, B.B. King Entertainer of the Year and Song of the Year for his tune The Blues Ain’t Going Nowhere. Additionally, Nightcats’ guitarist Christoffer “Kid” Andersen is among the Instrumentalist:Guitar contenders.

Their album You Knock Me Out recently received these acclaimed reviews: "Tired of "blues albums" that sound like heavy rock disguised (poorly) as blues? You'll have no such problem with Red's Blues' sophomore effort, "You Knock Me Out,". It's gritty and refreshing, striking a balance that will bring a smile to the lips of longtime blues enthusiasts. Beth "Red" Grigsby's understated vocal on Memphis Slim's "Mother Earth" is refreshing and real. Likewise, the delicacy of Jimmy Reed's "Ain't That Loving You, Baby" remains

Blues In The Schools By TJ Lev

Our Blues in the Schools program’s Assemblies are off and running. Musicians are playing, students are singing, and all are enjoying the Blues. Our After School Program starts up soon and BITS needs you! Unfortunately, funding relied on in previous years has not been made available, and some grant applications have been denied. Without you, this program will suffer. Out of town, got stuck at work, got the Winter crud, or just spaced, and missed that Blues show you wanted to go to? Pay it forward to BITS! To donate, go to the Sacramento Blues Society website www. sacblues.com; click on the Blues in the Schools link, then click on Support BITS. Push our new Paypal button. If you’re not online but would like to donate, no problem! Mail-in donations are always welcome. (Be sure to specify it is for Blues in the Schools.) Our mailing address is: Sacramento Blues Society, Blues in the Schools, PO Box 60580, Sacramento CA 95860-0580. All donations are so much appreciated, tax deductible, and every little bit helps! Also, BITS is looking for a few fun instruments. Do you have some hand percussion instruments collecting dust? We could use them for our assemblies! Lisa and I are shaker egg machines these days, but could use other musical gadgets for kids to play along; bells, triangles, claves, blocks, child size tambourine or hand tom-tom. Or, if you have an idea on how to create some kind of music maker, let us know! We are looking forward to our BITS brunch: our yearly feast to show our appreciation to all our BITS supporters; past and future blues musician professionals, local teachers, SBS members and our community sponsors who help keep the blues alive. With your support, BITS provides students all over Sacramento and nearby counties with blues lectures and performances, coaching and hands-on learning about all aspects of the Blues, songwriting, and the music business from kindergarteners through high school seniors. Without you, BITS would not exist! Thank you to all, now let’s eat! The BITS committee meets monthly; would you like to get involved? We can always use help. I guarantee you have something we want! Let us know what you can do, how much you love the Blues, and we will invite you to our next meeting and dinner. We’re fun! Be kind, and keep the Blues alive! Until next time… Tj.

Save the Date! BITS Showcase Coming May 3! The SBS’s Annual BITS Student Showcase will occur on Thursday, May 3, 2018, concurrently with our participation in the Big Day of Giving. Stay tuned for the “411” on the time and place, and plan to come out to support our student musicians! 8

Blast from the Past - Historical

Perspective By Bob Cosman

Twenty three years ago the SBS was smokin’ with big name artists all around town. Billy Branch and the Sons of Blues performed at the YWCA (of all places), Dave Specter with The Lynwood Slim Band with opening act The Four Day Creepers tore it up at The Dante Club in March. They were followed in April by The Tommy Castro Band with The Blusaders on the beautiful Delta King in Old Sac and Rod Piazza & the Mighty Flyers at the La Sierra Center. Guitar Mac & His Blues Express held a CD release party at The Dodge City Inn. Local talents Mick Martin & the Blues Rockers (best local blues band, best debut album), Jerry Banks (best blues drummer), and Omar Sharriff (best keyboards) were high off their recent Sammies win. SBS publicist Sherie Brubaker described a recent show by Junior Wells at The Palms Playhouse in Davis. The Palms was recently awarded a Sammie Critical Achievement Award for bringing the best in American roots music to the Sacramento Valley. During March and April of that year The Palms also brought us The Sundogs, John Hammond, Charlie Musslewhite, and Elvin Bishop. The SBS began selling tickets to the Fourth Annual Blues Cruise held on the Sacramento riverboat The Elizabeth Louise featuring The Earl ‘Goodrockin’ Brown Band for all of $20.

The SBS was guided at the time by a group of 19 hard-working Blues fans led by President Jack Oudiz, Vice Pres. Charles Washington, Secretary Linda Ham, and treasurer Marie Phillips. Some others serving at the time were; Charlie Kaplan, Richard Selleseth, Paul Luscher, Jeff Bradford, and Ramona Cota. Thanks guys. The Blue Notes were full of stories including a review by Thom Myers and Kathleen Bennett of the 3rd annual Ultimate Rhythm & Blues Cruise, an extensive article on the West Coast Blues by Dan Pollock featuring Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson, CD reviews of the latest by William Clarke, Ron Hacker, Johnny Adams and others. Sacramento has always been a city with great access to the best blues artists of the day. That is still the case today. So, get on out and hear some live Blues y’all.

Help Wanted! Blue Notes Newsletter Committee Needs YOU!

We need help to keep putting out our Blue Notes newsletter. We’d like to find a few people with specific skills to join our committee and help make the Blues Notes the best publication it can be. We’d like to find a “staff photographer” volunteer, who’s skilled at taking high quality pictures, to photograph SBS shows and events. We also need someone with graphic design experience with Adobe Indesign, to help with newsletter layout and print preparation. And we always can use more “roving reporters” who will submit show reviews and articles for us. To volunteer, contact Cari Chenkin at cariedawaycc@gmail.com. Thank you! 9
