A Message from the President

By Renee Erickson We’re getting ready to welcome fall, but what a great summer we have had! I hope you had a chance to attend the Tia Carroll and Doug MacLeod events. They were amazing! We’re working hard to bring our members awesome Blues, so please keep reading Willie Brown’s Monday e-mail and continue to check out our Web Site to keep up to date. Congratulations to Matt Rainey and The Dippin’ Sauce on winning the IBC Competition in August. We’re excited to help send them to Memphis and wish them the very best of luck at the Competition. All of the bands competing were awesome, and I’m sure it was tough on the judges. Thank you Jan Kelley, Bob Cosman, and Marshal Wilkerson. The Zach Waters Band was runner-up and they will be performing at our Annual Member Party December 2nd at the VFW, prior to the Ben Rice Band. This will be our final newsletter prior to our elections for the new Board in December. I would like to urge anyone who might have the inclination to contact me or any of our board members if you are interested in exploring the possibility of running in this year’s election. The Sacramento Blues Society needs your help. Several of our Board Members will be terming off this year and next year. That means that there will be several vacancies that must be filled. A Board Member can serve for two 2-year terms and then must be off the Board for at least one year before they can run again. There are a couple of exceptions that I won’t go into here. Serving on the Board does not necessarily mean that it will be extremely time consuming. Many of our Board Members spend the first year pretty much becoming familiar with the workings of the Board and deciding where they will fit and what they want to do. If serving on the Board is not for you, but you know someone that you would like to nominate, please contact me. I’m more than happy to call and answer questions and explore the possibility with any of our members. We really need your help! I hope to see many of you at our Hall of Fame Awards show at Harlow’s in September. Please come and help us to say thank you to these awesome musicians who have contributed so much for so long!

Call for Volunteers - SBS Board Member Elections Coming Soon!

If you’ve ever thought “The Blues Society really should ____” (fill in the blank) and are ready to turn your good ideas into reality, please consider running, or nominating someone you know who’d be an asset to the Society. We can’t stress enough the importance of having new and fresh members wiling to donate their ideas, time and energy to the Blues Society. If we are to continue to exist, we need to bring in these new Board Members in an ongoing basis! The crowd loved Tia’s soulfully-melodic version of “Purple Rain” and got the house swaying and singing to Al Green’s “Love and Happiness”.

Blues In The Schools

By Lisa Phenix BITS has enjoyed some summer downtime after one of our best student showcases ever last May. We are happy to announce that TJ Lev and Richard Clemens have agreed to jump on board with BITS. Richard was a big help at the showcase. TJ is an amazing artist and BITS is so lucky to have her on our team. You can check out her work at www.facebook.com/RoseBrushStudio. TJ bravely organized and put into a database all of the wonderful student and parent comments from the Showcase. She also recently completed and submitted a grant proposal to fund BITs for next year.

Our thanks to Ms. Carroll for doing her part in keeping the Blues alive here in the River City and to the Ryder Green Band, who has clearly joined the ranks of keeping the tradition of the Blues alive and well! The Sacramento Blues Society and all those who attended the show raised their glasses in a champagne toast honoring our very own Jan Kelley, who celebrated her 75th birthday. All of us wish you many more happy years Jan!

A big thank you to Walmart store #1881 manager Allen Becker, who has once again stepped up to the plate with some grant money. Yay! Liz Walker is transitioning much of the BITS responsibilities to me. I’m truly shocked at how much Liz does. Wow! I still have a lot to learn. In addition to figuring out grant writing fundamentals, I also hope to increase musician involvement/training, and get instruments for students to enjoy during our large assemblies. Speaking of Liz, she is spearheading a new Veterans Arts/Music Adult Ed 8 week program in Yolo County. The program will culminate in a Veteran’s Day showcase with the vets singing and performing originals and blues standards. The event will also include a barbecue and family art project which TJ, is organizing. This is an exciting expansion of our BITS program graciously funded by a generous grant from the Yolo County Arts Commission. How is it connected? BITS is blooming. This summer, BITS networked with the Sacramento Kings at their “Do Good Summit”, at Mayor Steinberg and Sac City’s “Come Together Arts and Cultural Event”, and with John Saltnes, marketing director for Sacramento’s own KZAP. Zack Waters (one of BITS recent graduates), has a new single which John graciously featured recently on the Friday drive time blues show. You can check Zach out at www.facebook.com/zachwatersband. So proud of our students as they step out into the community to play the Blues.

Tia Carroll Brings it Home!

By Ro Bloodwell The Sacramento Blues Society was honored to have sponsored the July 16th show at the Fair Oaks Village Clubhouse featuring Ms. Tia Carroll, with special guests the Ryder Green Band. The show started off with the infectious hot licks of 19-year-old young-blood guitarist Ryder Green and his band. The Ryder Green Band delivered some hard-driven blues infused rock performing originals like “I Won’t Take It From You” as well as an “old soul” ripping rendition of “Boom Boom Boom”. Kicking it off right, Tia performed “The Blues is My Business” to a full house, sold out show, entertaining several guests from the Bay Area as well as the Sacramento region. Ms. Carroll quickly spiced things up with James Brown’s “In a Cold Sweat” and “I Feel Good”.

Sacramento Blues Society Hall of Fame - Class of 2017 Inductees

The Sacramento Blues Society is proud to present 2017’s class of Blues Hall of Fame Inductees. We’re grateful to them for their years of participation in the Sacrament blues scene, and are pleased to honor their contributions. We also want to thank the members of the Hall of Fame committee for their work in selecting the honorees. Great job, Sally Katen, Barbara Katen, Kelcy Hamm, Jan Kelley (HOF Member 2014), Liz Peel (HOF Member 2015), Marshal Wilkerson (HOF Member 2014), Mick Martin (HOF Member 2010), Pat “Ratatat” Balcom (HOF Member 2013) and Ray “Catfish” Copeland (HOF Member 2012). Janiva Magness, and the William Clarke band (then featuring Rick Holmstrom and Zach Zunis on guitars). Stan also played on his first recording with the Phoenix band, the Hoo Doo Kings.

Fred “Deacon” Baker Fred “Deacon” Baker started his musical career early, at the age of six, singing gospel in the church choir. and was singing solos by the age of 10. His first instrument of choice was the trumpet, which he played in high school and college marching bands. While in high school he taught himself harmonica, and in college played in a jazz band that backed such notables as Doc Severinsen. His career in the Navy took him to various countries where he could expand upon his vocals and harp playing, eventually leading him back to the States, where he soon became a popular fixture, playing with Johnny Heartsman, Arbess Williams, and Omar Sharriff (all HOF members now), generally at Sam’s Hof Brau and the Torch Club. He has done studio work with Sly and the Family Stone and Sammy Hagar, television work out of Chico, CA on Channel 12, and even crossed the line playing country at the Opry Land Hotel and the Nashville Palace in Nashville.

Upon returning to Sacramento in 1991, Stan joined his first band, the Coolerators, which evolved into the current Midtown Creepers. The band has survived almost 25 years with original members Jerry McGuire and Stan Powell - while other personnel have changed, the band still includes a Nightcats alum and Hall of Fame member Liz Peel on bass, who Stan first met while taking lessons from Little Charlie. The Creepers have played at many of the notable Sacramento area clubs. Stan was also a member of Catfish and the Crawdaddies for about 15 years, reconnecting musically with Catfish Copeland. Stan participated in most of the band’s performances at the Sacramento Music Festival, and played on all three of the Crawdaddies' CDs. Stan has also played with other northern California artists, including three CDs by west coast guitar wizard Kenny Blue Ray; Bobby Blues Ray’s recent “Blues Knight of the West Coast” CD; Julie and the Jukes and he is currently playing original rock and roll music with Friday Night Band, having played on their first CD.

Bill Scholer

Bill Scholer is a native Californian, born in Concord, California in 1954. As a teenager, he was greatly influenced by Jimmy Page, Albert King, Mike Bloomfield, Steve Miller and many others. From that point on, he worked to become a guitarist, making many trips on a Greyhound bus to San Francisco to see his favorite guitarists.

Upon returning to Sacramento Deacon was encouraged by Ken Van Cromphaut (Obie Dee) to join his band the BluesExciters and when it folded, he became a member of the Sacramento Blues Revue, with whom he continues to play to this day.

Stan Powell Stan Powell started playing harmonica in the late 1970s, taking lessons from Little Charlie Baty. He began sitting in with Sacramento Hall of Fame members Little Charlie and the Nightcats, Ray “Catfish” Copeland, and Johnny Knox, who were each important early influences on his playing and gave him practical education on playing music. In the 1980s, Stan had the opportunity to play with now well-known national artists like Bob Corritore,

Scholer came to Davis to work for the UCD Art Department as Graphic Technician in 1981, which led him to meet Mike Henderson. Henderson was a blues guitarist who was performing with Mike Bloomfield, Albert Collins and opening for Jerry Garcia. With the encouragement of Henderson, Bill started performing in Davis coffee shops and open mics.

4

Teaming up with harmonica player Jim Lewis this acoustic duo opened shows for Paul Butterfield and Rick Danko, Willie Dixon, James Cotton and John Lee Hooker at the Palms. Adding drums, bass, and sax, The Bill Scholer Blues Band started hitting the clubs.

This initial version of the Bill Scholer Blues Band opened shows for Los Lobos, The Chambers Brothers and The Ventures and played the Sacramento Blues Festival.

Brown, Boz Skaggs, Linda Tillery & The Loading Zone, Sons of Champlin, and Elvin Bishop. He also played many times in various bands with, or backed, the following folks: Mick Martin, Johnny Clarke, Gary Black, Johnny Nugget, Omar Sharriff, Marcus Rivers; Newell Burton (Electric Church), Craig Horton, Jimmy Z (Etta James, Rod Stewart), Roger Smith (Tower of Power), Guitar Shorty, RW Grigsby, and Steve Samuels.

Scholer formed a newer version of the Bill Scholer Blues Band, which once represented the Sacramento Blues Society at the Oakland Art Museum at a gathering of Northern California Blues Societies and toured the Ukraine. Scholer went on to form other bands that played in the old Sam’s Hof Brau, Fox and Goose and the Hogshead Brew Pub in Old Sac. Each of these bands had a mixture of stellar performers. In 2000 Scholer performed at the Crocker Art Museum with Robert Armstrong, Keith Cary and Jim Monroe for the exhibition The Art of the Resonator Guitar. Teaching music has always been Bill’s passion; he was awarded the California Arts Council Artist in Residency grant to teach music within the California State Prison system before relocating to Japan in 2012, where he currently resides with his wife Karla.

Tim played in the Oldies Revue (Hughes Stadium, early ‘80s w/Johnny Heartsman), backed Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Mary Wells, the Coasters, the Drifters, Jewel Aiken, and Will Porter, in addition to playing many times at the Sacramento Blues Festival produced by the late Phil Givant in the 80’s; backed Chuck Berry there in 1992; and the Johnny Knox Trio with Jay Peterson at Sam’s Hof Brau, 1991-1992. 1995-2000 brought him into the Bill Scholer Blues Band; Kenny Blue Ray 2009-2012; Catfish and the Crawdaddies w/Ray Copeland 20122014; Red’s Blues, Sacramento Music Festival 2017 and The Hucklebucks 2010-present, plus the 2017 Sammies Hall of Fame.

Ken (Obie Dee) Van Cromphaut

Ken (Obie Dee) Van Cromphaut has been a fixture on the West Coast music scene for more than forty years. With formal classical training, he had a love for Gospel and Blues music at an early age. He has also donned the composer hat and is a member of ASCAP as well as being a session musician and performing artist. As a guitarist, Obie Dee has crafted a crystalline guitar tone and screaming leads, and along with his raspy vocals, they have become his signature sound. His membership in some of the best known bands include The BluesExciters (founder), performed with Mick Martin and the Blues Rockers, The Grant Urias Band, Ro Harpo, the Slim Chance Band, Sleeper, Bone Jelly, and most recently the Zola Moon Band. In addition, Ken has been active in fund-raising events such as Loaves and Fishes, MDA Telethon, and the Multiple Sclerosis Society. He is a continuing member of the Sacramento Blues Society and the now-defunct Sierra Blues Society, where he once served on the Board of Directors.

Jay Peterson

Jay Peterson was the former bassist for Little Charlie and the Nightcats and unfortunately cancer took his life in May. Over the course of his music career, Jay worked with such notables as Chuck Berry, Otis Rush and Charlie Musselwhite and local luminaries like Johnny "Guitar" Knox and more recently, Kyle Rowland. Jay's professionalism and showmanship were instrumental in taking Little Charlie and the Nightcats from working the local bar scene to being signed by Alligator records and touring the world. Jay fought and conquered some serious health issues and had really been thriving the past few years until the cancer got him.

Tim Wilbur

Tim Wilbur has been a first-call drummer for an extensive list of Sacramento's best musicians/bands and beyond, going back decades. It’s been said that Tim, a pro's pro, has always been well prepared and on time for every musical assignment!

Charlie Baty recalls “Jay Peterson has represented Sacramento around the whole world. Jay was there at the inception of the blues scene at Sam's Hofbrau and backed Johnny Knox there for years. Jay lived here for large chunks of time twice in his life. There have been few people who have been as influential as Jay Peterson in the history of Sacramento blues.”

Wilbur was mentored by Ray Torres (Jimmy Reed, Freddie King, Delbert McClinton), played with Timothy Grass, co-founder, ’67-'70, a band featured in the legendary gigs in William Land Park, also Slo Loris, co-founder, ’69-‘70, horn band that gigged in the Sacramento Area/San Francisco Bay Area, opening for Tower of Power, Savoy

A special induction by former bandmates Charlie Baty and Rick Estrin will take place during the Hall of Fame ceremony. 5

Headed to Memphis!

By David Alcock Sac Blues’ 2017 IBC competitiom was off the charts this year! All the bands brought their Agame and put on a great show. Even though all the bands were fantastic, there can only be one winner and this year’s winner is Matt Rainey and the Dippin’ Sauce, who will represent The Sacramento Blues Society in Memphis on January 16-20, 2018. They will join other Blues bands from around the world on Beale Street showcasing the best Blues that the world has to offer. This year’s IBC started off with a smokin’ set by Foxtrot Mary, whose music was strong and powerful with the help of a rockin’ horn section. Their music was a full-frontal assault of soul and feeling that set the bar quite high from the get-go. The next act was a high energy band, The Austin Mo Xperience, headed by Austin Mo, a young gun from Sacramento. His vocals were strong and mature along with a guitar sound that rocked the house, and set the bar even higher for the rest of the bands. Following Austin Mo was Matt Rainey and the Dippin’ Sauce, who brought the pure sound of the Blues that lit up the audience like the sun in the middle of the night. Rounding up the day was another band led by a local young gun, The Zach Waters Band, which blew the roof off of the house with their great combination of Blues and Blues Rock. After the competition, Ro Harpo led an incredible all-star jam session that finished off a day of great music that showcased some the best Blues artists the area has to offer.

The Austin Mo Experience

We would like to thank our panel of judges, Marshall Wilkerson, Jan Kelley and Bob Cosman, for coming out and lending their expertise to determine this year’s winner. It was not an easy job. In addition, we would also like to thank all the volunteers, the SBS Board of Directors, the Events Committee, and everyone that came to help make the event a truly special day. As first runner-up, the Zach Waters Band will play at the SBS Member Party on December 2, 2017. Matt Rainey and the Dippin’ Sauce

Foxtrot Mary, first band up at the IBC Competition.

Blues Cruise Raffle Winner!

Blast from the Past

Congratulations to Art Quinn, SBS Member, whose raffle ticket was drawn as the winner of the Blues Cruise at the Doug MacLeod show on 8/13! Have a blast bluesin’ on the high seas, Art!

Historical Perspective By Bob Cosman One of the most anticipated summer/fall events by SBS members was the annual Sacramento River Cruise, conceived and orchestrated by Alonzo Taylor. Begun in 1992 with The Slam Boogie Band providing the tunes, it ran for 10 consecutive years. The cruise featured such artists as: 1993 The Beverly Stoval Band, 1995 Earl “Good Rockin” Brown, 1999 Aaron King and the Blues Imperials, and 2000 Lena Mosley and the Badd Shoes Band. Unfortunately, all good things must end (why is that?) and Blues Control performed on the final launching in Sept 2001. The SBS then entered one of its periodical declines and when it had turned around a year later, sadly, Al Taylor and his cruise were gone. I believe that we are ripe for a revival. Perhaps one of our enterprising members has what it takes to bring back this fun event. September of 2001 was also providing entertainment all over, including: Tab Benoit live simulcast from The Powerhouse Pub, the long-gone San Francisco Blues Festival was in full swing at Fort Mason showcasing Ike Turner, Candye Kane, Little Milton, and Jimmy Smith among many others. The Beer Dawgs were into their regular Thursday night gig at The Torch Club. Blues lovers still had Constable Jack’s to fall back on if you lived in the Newcastle area. Some of the other notable acts playing around town were: Blues Control, The Rolling Blackouts, and the very popular Bandana Blues Band., Mick Martin & the Blues Rockers were in the middle of their State Fair Run. Some of the dedicated folks running things at the SBS were: Jim Picucci security, Jan Kelley calendar, Bill Osborn membership, and Jeanette Siglar newsletter plus Rick Chavaro were handling multiple CD reviews for the Blue Notes. Nothing lasts forever, so get off the couch and see some live blues!

Doug MacLeod Knocks It Out Of The Ball Park! By Jan Kelley

Those of you who weren’t at this show at the Torch Club August 13th missed someone extremely talented and entertaining. This multi-winner of Blues Music Awards entranced, enthralled and entertained an appreciative audience who gave back their love of his talent with cheers and yells for more. Mr. MacLeod is well-known not only for his acoustic guitar playing but also for his songs that he sings and talks throughout his playing, causing emotions that range from laughter to pondering our fate. His life experiences have taught him the true value of enjoyment in life itself, sharing with his audience his own abusive childhood and how he later realized as an adult he had to overcome his anger and appreciate what life has to offer. His expressive voice and relationship to his audience causes one to truly listen to each and every word, holding them captive. This is a true artist a person can easily relate to, as MacLeod plays and sings directly to his audience in an intimate fashion. Check him out on www.doug-macleod.com. Hopefully, we’ll be bringing him back again next year!
