PRESIDENT'S REPORT (Edward Branson)

SACUSA Members, It is with great pleasure that I present the President’s report of our Association’s business for the 2013-2014 year. As I reflect the year just concluded, I am struck by the range of activities that engage the attention of your executive. Some of these activities continue from season to season and some involve new initiatives. Integrating scorers into our association continues to be a challenge. Some planned initiatives did not eventuate but expect to see some developments in this area over the next few years. It was great to celebrate our first Buckett/Hammond Scorer of the Year, Phil Penn, at the recent Presentation Dinner. Involving members from other associations is also an ongoing challenge. It has been good to share training with colleagues from other associations at our pre-season training weekend and we are gradually gaining more members from these associations. Again it was good to celebrate the success of Darrel Craft, from Broken Hill, on being the inaugural winner of the Peter Weeks Community Umpire of the Year. No doubt these will continue as a feature of our annual presentations in future years. Undoubtedly, the most significant initiative of the year was the announcement of our first inductees into the SACUSA Hall of Fame. This initiative is another step along the way to creating a history of our association. Extensive research by Kristen Thomas and Max Bartlett meant that the selection panel of Harvey Jolly, Geoff Sando and Ray Isherwood were left with difficult decisions to make. Experience with, and advice from, other associations’ Halls of Fame led your executive to decide on an external panel being charged with the final decisions. We sincerely thank these people for their wonderful contribution. Already our Hall of Fame has excited widespread interest both within the South Australian cricket scene and more widely. Both Kristen and Max continue to research our history and the contributions of former members and they both continue to attack this huge task with energy and enthusiasm. We are extremely grateful. Again a successful social afternoon was held at Adelaide Oval for former umpires and their partners and the intention is to combine this function with a special launch of the Hall of Fame with inductees and family members of inductees, early in the new season. The Adelaide Royal Coach has continued to provide a most suitable venue for the monthly executive meetings and to the people there we also offer our thanks. This past season saw the emergence of the Premier League as a level above the Grade competition. It is true to say that the advent of the Premier League was not without considerable soul searching within the Grade ranks and further changes are mooted. A review panel has recommended significant club mergers and changes to some of the grades, particularly at the junior levels. A number of other far-reaching changes have also been suggested to do with things such as ground development, for example. This will have impact on both umpire and scorer activities. A group has been constituted to guide the implementation of these reforms, some of which will happen quickly and others over a somewhat longer period of time. SACUSA has been kept informed of developments and involved in the ongoing discussions largely through our Grade Cricket Committee representative, Lynton Donisthorpe. We continue to be very proud of our Elite Panel representative, Steve Davis, even though it means that we see little of him since his umpiring has him overseas for so much of the time, and of our domestic representatives Paul Wilson and Simon Fry. Simon in particular had an outstanding year culminating with winning the Cricket Australia Umpire of the Year Award as well as being named the South Australian Sports Official of the Year. We are sad that Paul and Sally Wilson are leaving South Australia to move to Page 5

New South Wales but we thank them for their contribution to our association while they have been here and look forward to seeing Paul’s continued advancement through the ranks. Congratulations to Craig Thomas for being named Grade Cricket Umpire of the Year at the Bradman Medal Presentation and to Craig Thomas and Luke Uthenwoldt for officiating in the A Grade Grand Final. Congratulations to all the other Umpires who officiated in Grand Finals and to those who achieved milestones. These are detailed elsewhere in this report. We should note the achievement of Geoff Behn, Cory Black, Neal Cotgrove, Adrian Drosd, David Duffy, Cain Kemp, William Marshall, John Williams and Michael Williamson who officiated in their first A Grade games. SACUSA continues to enjoy close affiliation with SACA and we are actively represented on Grade Cricket Committee and sub-committees. We are especially appreciative of the strong support we receive as an association and as umpires from Shane Bernhardt and Sarah Fry, and of course, the ongoing efforts in umpire training, development and mentoring of the indomitable Neil Poulton, ably supported by Amy White. We are sorry that Amy is moving on and we thank her for her support and wish her well for the future. The challenge of umpiring numbers continues. It is a little disturbing that “on paper” we have more than sufficient umpires but there are still games with only one or even no officials. The situation did improve this year but the concern of clubs about this issue is understandable. Similar concerns have been expressed about umpire quality but review of captain’s reports would seem to suggest that there has been improvement in this area also. Nevertheless, maintaining both the numbers and the quality of umpires will always be a concern that your executive is anxious to help address. We fully support the many initiatives that Neil Poulton has taken over the years, not least to see umpires in other associations gaining access to quality, ongoing training and development. Again Neil’s efforts deserve our gratitude. The Bradman Medal Presentation Dinner was again a successful night, showcasing Grade Cricket. Congratulations to Jake Brown of Kensington Cricket Club on his season, which was rewarded with the medal. Congratulations to the other award winners. Again, while SACUSA is “host” for this Dinner, we acknowledge the wonderful organisation carried out by SACA. This has made the night bigger and better year by year. It is good to see our umpires support the night. The next Easter visit is next year and already the Victorians have organised accommodation and venues and I urge all members to join in this wonderful biennial event. If you have not been involved in an Easter, come and see why this exchange has continued since 1931. The social side of our activities continue to be central to your executive members concerns. Elsewhere in this annual report, Craig Thomas has detailed the activities of this past season. I would like to mention just a few:  Craig and Phil Penn organised a match between the Blind Cricket Association and SACUSA. Those involved found this to be a particularly moving experience and it would be my hope that this game could become a regular feature of our season and that we could attract more of our members to witness the event. Games of this type were a feature of SACUSA activities in former years.  The twilight game between SACUSA and the ATCUSA as part of the Adelaide Turf Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association’s Seventy-Fifth Birthday celebrations. This was a great success and I would like to congratulate ATCUSA on achieving this milestone.  The President’s XI versus the Vice-President’s XI match at Mylor is becoming a feature of our calendar. Again it was a great success and it was pleasing to see so many members and their families involved. We thank David Little for securing the fine venue at Mylor again.  Our Presentation Dinner, which continues to grow and develop, was again held at the West Lakes Golf Club. A record number of participants this year witnessed the inauguration of the Hall of Fame. Each year seems to bring a fresh focus to this night as we celebrate the season past and the achievements of our colleagues. Congratulations to all the award winners and to those umpires who achieved significant milestones. It was pleasing to see SACUSA acknowledge the wonderful contribution to cricket and umpiring made by Malcolm Green in awarding him the John Wilson Award on the eve of his retirement. Congratulations and thankyou for your fine service, Malcolm. Page 6

There is no doubt that the health and ongoing success of our association is built on the involvement of each member in the association’s activities. I believe that our performance on the field is enhanced when we already know our partner because we have met and interacted at monthly meetings and at the various social activities. It is good that so many of us continue to do this but we all need to continually ensure that new members are welcomed and invited and that we engage as fully as we can. I believe that our association is in good heart and this is due, in no small manner, to many outstanding contributions. First, each of your Executive has contributed significant time and effort over the last season. Your Vice President, Craig Thomas, has worked tirelessly on organising cricket matches and, of course with all the organising of the social activities. I cannot remember a season with SACUSA playing so many cricket matches, so this alone has required a lot of work. With Craig, our association ‘gets two for the price of one’ in that his wife, Kristen, is so active with researching our history and in helping organise the Presentation Dinner. He has continued to organise the BBQs at our monthly meetings together with catering for our cricketers’ needs. Michial Farrow continues to discharge his duties in his no nonsense, efficient and thorough manner. There is a large amount of work behind the scenes that Michial does and this workload seems to be growing. Michial has streamlined many of our processes and greatly helped the running of the Executive and the Association as a whole. I think that most members are aware of the wonderful contribution of our Treasurer, Lynton Donisthorpe. Not only are the books kept meticulously but Lynton is also able to assist the Executive in foreseeing challenges and planning accordingly. He is our representative on the SACA Cricket Committee, where he represents umpiring interests relentlessly and enhances the standing of umpires and our association through his input and because he is so highly respected. He is also a very wise voice in Executive deliberations. We are sorry that Jeff King is not continuing on the Executive because he has worked tirelessly to secure sponsorship for SACUSA. This task has been very frustrating due partly to the difficult financial times that many businesses are experiencing and to limitations on sponsorship that are imposed on us. Time and time again Jeff has found a willing sponsor only to have the deal fall over at the last minute. Jeff also represented SACUSA on the By-laws subcommittee of SACA. Thank you for your contribution, Jeff. Tony Trist has continued to look after property and has been very active in assisting on the Social subcommittee. Again, Tony brings a lively enthusiasm to all the activities he is engaged in. It was good to welcome Bruce Stribley back onto the Executive and he has served, with Jeff King on the ByLaws subcommittee as well as being on the Permits subcommittee with Michial Farrow. Michael Williamson has joined the Executive and has contributed on the field in our SACUSA teams, helping with the organisation of those teams and with the Social Subcommittee. On behalf of our members I would like to thank each Executive member for their efforts and on a personal level to thank each one for the support they have given me over this past season. While thanking people, I express the gratitude of all members for the work that Tim Pellew does in compiling our monthly magazine, Sticky Wicket. This is not an easy task and I urge members to help Tim by contributing articles, anecdotes, questions and ideas. Many other members have been of assistance at various times of the year, and your efforts are appreciated. As my term as your president draws to a close I wish to place on record my appreciation to all members for the support and encouragement afforded to me over the past two years. It really is a privilege to serve you in this role, which gives a wonderful insight into cricket in this State. I will miss the role but feel enriched from having had the opportunity to serve. I wish my successor the same satisfaction and enjoyment that I have enjoyed. Thank you all. Ed Branson President

SECRETARY'S REPORT (Michial Farrow)

Mr President and Members of SACUSA, I would like to present to you my report on the season just gone at this Annual General Meeting of the South Australian Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association. Regrettably, during the season Ray Blake passed away. Ray was a valued Life Member and former President of the Association. We have had a very busy year on the social side of things. The season was launched at the Adelaide Zoo where SACUSA became the sponsors of the Sumatran Tiger. During the season we had our Christmas Meeting, Former Umpires Group Social Event, Cricket matches with SA Blind Cricket and Adelaide Turf Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association, Easter Cricket Match / Family Fun Day and more information on these events can be found in the Social Convenors’ Report. We continue to appreciate the generosity of the people at the Kensington Cricket Club for allowing us to use their facilities for our monthly meetings. Desma and Graham MacTavish have continued to supply salads and other delights for our meetings and this, combined with the BBQ has continued to mean that members have enjoyed the social aspects of our meetings. At this stage we look set to continue our association with Kensington Cricket Club’s Parkinson Oval as a venue for the monthly meetings in the new season. Even though we have enjoyed using Parkinson as our base, we do dream of a day when we will have our own facility where our honour boards and memorabilia can be displayed and we can have a “home”. The season once again climaxed with the Bradman Medal Dinner Presentation. I would like to congratulate all the medal winners and in particular Jake Brown of the Kensington Cricket Club on winning the Bradman Medal. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate the 2014 SACA Grade Cricket Umpire of the Year Craig Thomas on a fine season which included having the honour of umpiring a Futures League match in Melbourne. Our season finished with the Presentation Dinner, which this year included the announcement of our inaugural inductees to the SACUSA Hall of Fame as chosen by our selection panel of Harvey Jolly, Ray Isherwood and Geoff Sando. Congratulations to these 11 gentlemen; Philip Argall, Samuel Buckett, Keith C Butler, Anthony Crafter, Sidney Daly, Alfred Godson, Daryl Harper, George Hele, Melville McInnes, Maxwell O’Connell and John Wilson on their selection. It would be remiss of me not to thank Kristen Thomas, Max Bartlett, Ed Branson, Peter Weddell, Bob Woods and Craig Thomas for the great work that they as our History sub-committee put into making the Hall of Fame induction a success. Congratulations to all our members on the high standard of umpiring displayed through the year and in particular all those that umpired finals in the season just gone. The great contribution of our members has not been restricted to Grade Cricket but also at the domestic level where we had Simon Fry, Paul Wilson, Luke Uthenwoldt, Lynton Donisthorpe, John Biddiss, Kumar Chandrakumar and Craig Thomas performing well. On the international scene we had Steve Davis going about business at his normal high standard and Simon and Paul also gained exposure on the international scene both in Australia and abroad. I would also like to congratulate Simon on all the awards he collected. Simon was the South Australian Sports Official of the Year and the Cricket Australia Umpire of the Year. The second joint meeting with the VCAUSA Committee of Management and SACUSA Executive and their partners was held at Penola over the June holiday weekend. These meetings afford an excellent opportunity to assist in the planning of our Associations’ Easter weekends and other issues of interest to both associations are also explored. It is interesting to see the similar issues each association faces and interaction like this not only helps to build the ties but also helps us learn from each other.

Page 8

Thank you to all the members that sold and bought tickets in the Toyota “Good for Cricket” Lottery and the People’s Choice Community Lottery as it has generated around $1,500.00 for the Association. I would like to stress on all members the importance of these lotteries as they are a major contribution to our finances and without your support of these lotteries we will struggle to maintain the level of subsidies for our social events. It would be remiss of me not to thank our sponsors who without their support the Association would be struggling to provide the benefits it does to our members. So thank you to Coverdrive Couriers, St Johns Road Wines and 1834 Hotels and I ask that we support these companies that support us. To my fellow members of the Executive Committee and Neil Poulton, thank you all for your help and support and a big thank you to Amy White for all her assistance throughout the season. Finally to the members of SACUSA, I thank you for your support throughout the past season, and I look forward to your continued support in the up-coming season and beyond. Michial Farrow Secretary

TREASURER'S REPORT (Lynton Donisthorpe)

Mr President and Members of SACUSA, It is with great pleasure that I present to you the Treasurer's report of our Association’s business for the 2013–2014 financial year. Balance Sheet Summary This year has been somewhat challenging financially. These challenges were largely due to lower than expected income in some areas, higher than expected expenditure on some events and costs that had not been anticipated. It has however been a typical turnover year for a non-Easter with $34,514.95 of receipts and $34,306.71 of payments (excluding term deposit transactions). This has resulted in a small net surplus of $208.24 and a balance of $13,652.48 in our working account at the conclusion of this financial year. Membership Membership numbers in 2013/14 were down from our record last year, which saw us with 107 Full Members (decreased from 131 in 2012/13) and 15 Associate Members (increased from 6 in 2012/13). The decrease appears to be due, in part, to a small number of umpires not umpiring the entire season and some scorers changing from Full to Associate Membership. However, the number of scorers and umpires from other Associations is gradually increasing which is a trend we hope will continue. Sponsorship Sponsorship income decreased to more traditional levels this year, due almost entirely to the cash St John's Road Wine sponsorship via Centenary wine sales, not being available as virtually all wine has been sold. St John's Road continued as a sponsor in the form of product donations for which we are very grateful (although this does not appear on our balance sheet). I sincerely thank our loyal sponsors and friends at Coverdrive Couriers for their ongoing contribution to SACUSA over many years. Comparison with Budget Figures This final outcome was below the $1,561.00 surplus the Executive had budgeted for this year. This was due to a number of income items being under budget and some expenditure items being over budget. In particular; Membership income was down due to reduced member numbers ($1,200 below budget), we did not budget for a Former Umpire Group Function this year, however an event was held when an opportunity presented itself ($1,100 above budget), a higher than budgeted Presentation Dinner attendance that we attribute to the Hall of Fame ($1,100 above budget), the different Christmas meeting format this year ($600 above budget). On the positive note, we obtained a Government Grant of $3,048 (thanks to great work by Jeff King) for promotion which was not budgeted and is the principle reason for us achieving a near balanced financial position this year. Trust Accounts The Glad Jones and George McDonagh trust funds (held in Westpac Community Solutions Cash Reserve Account) saw interest income only this year, there was no withdrawal for Easter trophies (the reason the money was bequeathed to SACUSA). Interest income for the year was $33.13 leaving us with a final balance of $1,505.58, split between the two funds. Current Position Overview SACUSA is in a relatively sound financial position, however it is more difficult each year to provide events and subsidies due to increasing costs and member participation and some financial adjustments will be required if we are to continue providing benefits at current levels into the future.

Page 10

Page 11

Glad Jones and George McDonagh Memorial Trust Funds As a part of the biennial cricket match against the Victorian Cricket Association Umpires and Scorers Association, trophies are awarded to the best performed South Australian players for overall performance and fielding. These awards are made as a result of trust funds held by the South Australian Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association from monies donated by former members Gladstone Jones and George McDonagh. The first fund, the Glad Jones Memorial Trust Fund, was established in March 1976 with a donation of $150.00 from Mr. Gladstone Jones for a trophy to be awarded to the best performed player representing South Australia. Two years later Mr. George McDonagh made a similar donation, establishing the George McDonagh Memorial Trust Fund to enable an award to be made to the best performed fielder during these matches. The donations remain invested at the discretion of the SACUSA Committee however in the event that a decision was taken to discontinue the matches in the future, the funds and any interest earned was to be donated to the National Heart Foundation. After the establishment of both funds the Executive committee of the South Australian Cricket Umpires Association was empowered to use the interest earned from both funds to award the trophies after each match. An increase to the capital invested of $200.00 was made to each fund during the late 1980’s from interest already earned to ensure that a sound basis for interest earning existed and therefore the continuation of the awards. SOCIAL CONVENOR'S REPORT (Craig Thomas)

Mr President and Members of SACUSA, An amazingly socially diverse season kicked off on 31 July 2013 at a brilliantly original venue – the Adelaide Zoo. SACA Umpiring Manager, Neil Poulton, is to be congratulated on creating a unique event that captured the attention of all involved by turning the ‘endangered’ recruitment of cricket umpires and scorers into a positive way of helping the global community when he organised SACUSA sponsorship of the seriously lifethreatened Sumatran Tiger. I would encourage all members to attend our season launches whenever they can, as they are constantly evolving and ensure a fun and focused start to our all-important preparations. I will also take this opportunity to thank Neil for striving to produce new initiatives each season that serve to capture people’s attention. The ‘MacTavish Salad Bazaar’ continued gaining strength and admirers each month when our extremely generous and dedicated caterers delivered delicious and tasty home-made salads to compliment the increasingly popular barbeques which are provided at the regular member meetings held at Kensington District Cricket Club. Graham and Desma are treasured by our membership and are deeply thanked for their ongoing commitment to encouraging members to attend. Appreciation is also extended to Brian Litchfield and Terry Murch for performing their crucial roles of cooks so that everyone is safely and sufficiently fed. The delivery of these meals would not be possible without donation of time and effort from members and I would encourage everyone to express their thanks to all those who make these functions so enjoyable. This past season saw member meetings serve as a chance to learn about our Association’s history, receive training, talk shop, meet new members, enjoy authentic Aussie barbeques (and a couple of quiet bevvies), compete in a trivia quiz, and stay connected to Association business. Although I was unable to attend the Christmas Meeting at Thebarton Community Centre there was a special guest who kept everyone thoroughly entertained. ICC Umpire Performance and Training Manager, Simon Taufel, accepted our invitation to this event and agreed to speak briefly about his career and his vision for the role of technology in international cricket umpiring. He also graciously agreed to take questions from the floor – an opportunity too good for several of our members to pass up. Simon’s attendance, and that of many of the partners of our membership, was a real boon to the festive vibe of the evening. This was the second such Christmas meeting where partners were welcomed wholeheartedly and it is a tradition which the Executive Committee intends to continue unabated. It is important that our entire cricket officiating community – which includes those from other Associations as well as our partners and families – celebrates occasions together. Social functions started to ‘heat up’ in the month of February and continued through until the end of the season. The first of these was the Former Umpires Group (FUG) function at the Phil Ridings Bar in Adelaide Oval’s Western Stand. The SACUSA Executive Committee hosted some of our former umpires and partners at the West End One Day Cup Grand Final in the bar with the sensational view of proceedings. With such great facilities at our disposal in Adelaide, SACUSA feels that we are well supported to encourage former umpires to stay involved with our Association on a social basis and we hope to host other events in the coming seasons. There is much to be gained from retaining our relationships with valued former officials and we hope that those concerned want to stay in touch. Two days later the drama and temperature increased dramatically when cricket teams from both SACUSA and Adelaide Turf Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association (ATCUSA) arrived at Woodville South Oval to contest the resurrected Stanton Cup. The initial match was played in 1939 after ATCUSA’s first secretary, Roy Stanton, fell down some steps, hitting his head so violently that he never regained consciousness. Research undertaken to enhance ATCUSA’s 75th anniversary celebrations revealed that Roy was so highly Page 13

regarded that a memorial cricket match between the two organisations was created in his honour – a match which hadn’t been contested for many years. Although the original silver trophy couldn’t be located, SACA generously stepped forward to finance a new cup, and it was put on show during the proceedings. Hats off to all who fronted on an oppressively hot evening – including Graham and Desma, who supplied beautiful salads and sauces, Brian Litchfield, Ron Parsons and Terry Murch who cooked a barbeque beyond reproach and Neil Poulton for volunteering to umpire our match. The drama previously referred to occurred when Neil bravely fronted up to stand at the bowler’s end but collapsed during the early innings. Kumar Chandrakumar immediately took Neil’s place, ensuring that the contest continued without threat and we extend our very heartfelt thanks to him for that. Ultimately, SACUSA took the honours but both Associations were the winners of an evening brimming with goodwill. We are very grateful to ATCUSA for driving the resurrection of this event. One date on the calendar which I can’t recommend enough is the Bradman Medal Dinner. Once again, tickets to this formal evening were subsidised by SACUSA and the evening is well worth the effort in terms of dining on wonderful meals, enjoying beautiful wines and spending quality time with colleagues, partners, players and administrators. It’s important to remember that this event originally sprung from an idea created by umpires in the 1950's, and has grown to be the premier social and industry evening on SACA’s calendar. It serves to unite all cricket stakeholders in one venue for one cause – to celebrate the great feats achieved during the year, of both players and officials. If you haven’t yet attended, consider it for 2015. Easter this year was celebrated at the MCG (Mylor Cricket Ground) by members happy to compete for the ‘President’s vs Vice-President’s Silver Cup’ – the original of which was returned to SACUSA’s fold at the FUG function. After restoration it shone brightly in the sun, and the event – this time combined with our Family Fun Day (complete with giant bouncy castle) – was a fantastic success. Traditional Oakbank racing traffic didn’t stop a great turnout to the show, with Ed Branson’s President’s team proving victors this time. Another splendid lunch was provided by our highly-valued MacTavish’s, while thanks must also go to Brian and Julie Litchfield who cooked our barbeque meat to perfection. I’d encourage anyone wanting to share in good family-friendly hijinks to participate in 2016. The finale of our season was celebrated on 31st May at the picturesque West Lakes Golf Club once again. Our theme this time was the launch of our Hall of Fame, complete with the announcement of the inaugural inductions and the release of the booklet which details the lives and careers of the first eleven inclusions. Our largest Presentation Dinner so far, the evening was a rousing success, with our award winners and Hall of Fame inductees combining to recognise 100 years of amazing achievements across both umpiring and scoring. Without the contribution of the following people this special evening would not have been possible, and I sincerely thank Tony and Elizabeth Trist, Lynton Donisthorpe, Ed Branson, Paul Welbourn and last, but certainly not least, my wife, Kristen Thomas, who not only produced the Hall of Fame booklets which adorned the tables, but also coordinated our focus for the evening. There was a huge amount of variety in the proceedings this year, with two new awards struck – the ‘Peter Weeks Award for Community Umpire of the Year’ and the ‘Buckett Hammond Award for Scorer of the Year’ – resulting in SACUSA cementing its position as a body striving to develop cricket officiating in our state. It has been a pleasure to serve our membership for the last two seasons in the capacity of Social Convener and I am keen to recommend it as a role for anyone who wants to help ensure our events become better and more enjoyable each year. The use of social media to keep members interacting between matches and meetings has gained momentum this season and is proving to be especially effective in connecting members across the state, as well as colleagues from around the nation. The use of Google Plus, Facebook, Twitter and our website is being expanded, with new technologies being utilised to improve our education and accessibility to developments both within SA and beyond. Even if you are not comfortable using the social media platforms, I’d encourage more use of our website at sacusa.sa.cricket.com.au to stay up-to-date and involved with what your Association now offers. SA UMPIRING MANAGER (Neil Poulton)

Mr President and Members of SACUSA, Hard work breeds success and success is contagious. This season has been one of hard work and success in all aspects of umpiring. The 2013-14 season started with our umpiring launch at the Adelaide Zoo and was the biggest attended launch so far. Umpires from 4 different associations, around 110 in total, surrounded by wild animals and an expectation of what would be a breakout year for umpiring in South Australia. This night was followed by two months of Level 1 and Level 2 umpire courses, panel meetings and laws study nights all culminating with our Statewide Umpiring Seminar at Thebarton Community Centre. The seminar was a huge success at 150 participants It was not only the largest umpire seminar in Australia for the season it was also highly regarded by Cricket Australia’s Umpire Education Manager, Bob Parry. Special mention was made by Bob as to how impressed he was to see umpires from multiple associations working together to better their umpiring. Increasing umpiring numbers in both Adelaide Turf and Para Districts associations was a particular goal this season. I am pleased to report that both of these associations increased their numbers to new highs, a trend which I hope will continue into the future. From a Grade Cricket perspective we had the usual turnover of around 20 umpires but by the end of the season, numbers of grade cricket umpires have remained static at around 130 which I feel is more than adequate. Umpire education and accreditation this season was also highly successful with 270 new Level 1 (Community Umpiring) candidates achieved through a combination of both umpire and coach accreditation courses and 36 Level 2 (Representative Umpiring) candidates run in 3 courses over the year. Of note is the fact that this season 10 Adelaide Turf umpires participated as a group in the Level 2. Overall including our state-wide seminar, 429 umpires participated in structured training and development programs this season. Our state-wide numbers of accredited umpires also increased this season to 1,295 and we are well on track to achieve our goal of 1,500 accredited umpires in SA by June 2015. In a year of firsts and records, South Australia was the only state in Australia to send an umpire to every Cricket Australia National Championship this season. Special recognition is given to Craig Thomas (Under 19’s), Cory Black (Under 17’s), Adrian Drosd (Imparja Cup), Paul Welbourn (Under 18 Women) and Sarah Thamm (Under 15 Girls). Sarah’s achievement in not only being the first female umpire from SA to represent her state at nationals but the first umpire from Community Cricket at this level was a great achievement. Our SACA umpire development squad this season continued on the back of a strong previous season. Once again we have been able to identify and further develop our umpires of the future and Kim Perrin deserves all the credit to the success of this program. At a national level South Australian umpires have remained front of house in the eyes of Cricket Australia. Simon Fry led the way being recognised as not only Cricket Australia’s Umpire of the Year but the South Australian Sports Official of the Year at the Sport SA awards. Both Simon and Paul Wilson represented SA and Australia at national and international levels in all formats of the game. Both were appointed to matches overseas representing the ICC and/or Cricket Australia in tournaments and umpire exchange programs. My personal thanks and congratulations goes to both of them for not only their on-field achievements but also their dedication and assistance off the field to umpire development in South Australia. “Blocker” has advised he is moving to NSW to be closer to his family, and whilst a loss to SA, his contribution to Page 15

Australian Cricket and umpiring is sure to continue. I thank him for his assistance and friendship over the past few years - he will be missed. Our state panel in Luke Uthenwoldt, Craig Thomas and Cain Kemp performed very well at Futures League level with Craig breaking new ground travelling to Melbourne in a CA umpire exchange initiative. Our WNCL panel in Lynton Donisthorpe, John Biddiss and Kumar Chandrakumar again performed well with Michial Farrow making a welcomed cameo on one of the weekends. This season also brought us “Premier League”. Whilst the main goal for Premier League was to have the best SA players competing against one another on a regular basis this provided a great opportunity for umpiring. Craig Thomas, Luke Uthenwoldt, Bruce Stribley and John Biddiss absorbed the bulk of the responsibility and workload for this however I thank the additional SA umpires, NT Umpires, CA umpires and PNG umpire who all took the park at times through the 2 day, 1 day and T20 seasons. Our umpire coaches changed slightly in personnel this season and it was great to have both Ron Parsons and Brenton Schnell continue their involvement in umpiring in their new role as coaches. This season the coaches provided umpires with 334 feedback reports which I am sure the majority of umpires appreciated. The coaches also assisted me in the delivery of our Seminar and provided valuable input on panel and finals selection of umpires. It has been a pleasure to work with you all and I thank you for your efforts this year. To umpires in all associations, well done this season. Umpiring will always be a challenging role often with very little thanks or recognition. Hold your heads up high and be proud of what you do for cricket. This season umpiring has continued to be under the microscope with no shortage of individuals having something to say. I am very comfortable in saying that despite those negative individuals, umpiring in South Australia is in a strong and very healthy position. Every measure that can be used supports this view and to those who think otherwise I invite you to be part of the solution rather than contributing to what is only a narrowly perceived problem. My final thanks go to our Umpire Administration Officer, Amy White who moved into the role in September. As an umpire herself Amy already had a good understanding of “how things worked” in umpiring but she deserves both thanks and congratulations on just how well she looked after umpires this season. Amy’s high quality communication and her attention to detail I am sure was appreciated by all and I hope everyone will take the opportunity to “say thanks” when you next see her. Bring on next season!

HISTORY COMMITTEE REPORT (Kristen Thomas) Mr President and Members of SACUSA, The recent season has seen an amazing amount of our Association’s dormant historical content reveal itself, after many years inadvertently being hidden away beneath contemporary activities. After the previous season’s historical focus was aimed at our Easter Crockett Shield competition, it was decided in 2013/14 to address a new initiative – the establishment of a SACUSA Hall of Fame. It was apparent from the Easter research that had been conducted that there are individuals who had contributed enormous dedication to the evolution of our Association, but who we knew very little about at the end of our first century of operation. The members of the History Sub-Committee are extremely proud that we now have a way of recognising some of this crucial commitment, by way of the Hall of Fame – but it is intended as a means, rather than an end. It is sincerely hoped that it signals the beginning of a deluge of knowledge winding its way toward us to reveal more about our historic members, and that it will serve as a vehicle to educate people about major achievements and honour those who really have contributed in amazing ways to cricket officiating in South Australia. It would be inaccurate to state that the reason SACUSA’s history hasn’t been conclusively documented previously is because no-one has been interested. It is my understanding that the late Keith Jew was particularly curious about our origins, which resulted in the production of a brief history in the early 1980s. Peter Weddell and Bob Woods – both mines of information – have held sincere desires to document not only what they know first-hand, but also to research the annals that might exist somewhere, which hold the answers to questions we harbour now. Current President, Ed Branson, has been particularly interested in beginning the journey to research and present SACUSA’s story, and has encouraged the initiatives undertaken by the History Sub-Committee. Bill Penley is another who has endeavoured to support the investigation of some very interesting avenues of research. By far, however, the individual who has demonstrated the most dedication to the cause of revealing SACUSA’s historical background is current Umpire Coach, Max Bartlett. While diligently – as well as gently – coaxing information from those individuals over the years who he knew held significant knowledge of their era of SACUSA involvement, Max held fast to the dream of bringing the history of SA cricket officials to life. Ably encouraged by colleague, Chris Hollard – a fellow subscriber to the belief in the benefits of our historical quest – Max has never abandoned the search for knowledge about our journey. Technology has made the difference in being able to tell SACUSA’s tale, with important chapters that were recorded in daily newspapers becoming easily accessible for the first time. Once the gates were opened, Max’s commitment was rewarded with renewed enthusiasm from many and varied quarters – making his mission to record more contemporary tales meet with cooperation from far and wide. The result is that SACUSA is in the best position it has ever been in to rediscover and present a story which spans more than one hundred years. One highlight of the year has been a superbly satisfying oral history interview with an umpire from our mid20th century operations, John McMenamin, and his family. It is hoped that many more such interviews can be undertaken and made accessible via a new “virtual museum” - developed so that anyone interested in SA, sport or family history can hear what we have recorded. Another gratifying undertaking was a meeting with 1970s umpire, Dr Scott Graham, who has been living and working in the US for more than 20 years. After Bill Penley alerted me to his involvement and his whereabouts, I was able to contact him via email and arrange a meeting while he was on holiday visiting family. Ably accompanied by Scott’s friends, Bob and Raelene Woods, I was happily ensconced in a meeting over coffee with a gentleman who – having had established himself as a medical professor at the University of Iowa – held very fond memories of his youth spent umpiring for SACA in the 1970s. It is clear to me that cricket officiating is, for many, far more than a part-time job pursued for a little extra income. It is a profession adhered to for the fun, the spirit and the Page 17

satisfaction – and for the connection it invariably makes to fellow lovers of the game, and their understanding families. In order to discover more about historical, outstandingly significant officials I have utilised family history research methods to connect with descendants of those no longer with us. I have been astounded at the love and pride still held in the hearts of those family members who have a cricket official in their family tree, and I have been helped no end by those people who are, at present, the caretakers of the memories of their dearly departed loved ones. It is these people I would sincerely like to thank, for they have enabled me to become far more familiar with the fascinating life stories of cricket umpires and scorers who I would otherwise have remained far more removed from. This shared personal knowledge has enabled me to present the stories that deserve their time in the limelight. And there is plenty more to come. We have, I believe, only scratched the surface of the contribution that SA cricket officials have made to the cricketing landscape in this state and nationally. I urge all members to spread the word about the historical research we are trying to undertake, and share with the Association any memories that are held, at present, only in personal memory banks. They are far more valuable than many may realise – and so easily lost. Here’s hoping that the 2014/15 season is one of revelation of the rich history of SACUSA. Best wishes for the coming competition, Kristen Thomas History Sub-Committee

THE BRADMAN MEDAL During season 1957/58 three SACUA Umpires, John McMenamin, Jack Kierse and Gordon Seymour were enjoying a quiet drink after a SACUA meeting at the Hotel Adelaide in Pirie Street, when the ‘idea’ of an award for the best A Grade District Cricketer was proposed. The original award, first made at the conclusion of season 1958/59, was based on one vote per game for the best player during an ‘A’ Grade match. The first presentation dinner was held at the Seven Stars Hotel in Angas Street Adelaide and was attended by approximately 30 umpires. Votes were counted during the dinner and, at the conclusion of the count, joint winners Ian McLachlan and Brian Quigley were announced. Neither of the winners were in attendance and taxis were sent to their homes to bring them to the dinner to receive their award. During season 1976/77 it was decided that the District Cricketer Award should be renamed as the Bradman Medal and Sir Donald Bradman was approached for his approval. “The Don” agreed and said that he would be honoured to have the award named after him. The presentation of this prestigious award has continued and the Bradman Medal presentation dinner is now recognised as the pinnacle of any cricket season in South Australia. Season 2007/08 celebrated 50 years since the inception of the District Cricketer Award/Bradman Medal. To celebrate this occasion winners (or family members) of the District Cricketer Award from 1956/57 to 1975/76 were presented with a Bradman Medal at the Bradman Medal Presentation Dinner on 19th March 2008. Also on the night three players who lost on a count-back were awarded Bradman Medals.
