Development Paul Williams Firstly, I would like to introduce myself to all those I am yet to meet. It has now been two months since I began working at Bowls SA and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time so far and I look forward to meeting all those involved in the sport over the coming months. There has been a lot happening in Development over the last few months, with some exciting initiatives launched and more, hopefully, on the way.

Coaching

We are continuing to roll out the new Coaching Accreditation scheme, which so far has been relatively successful. Since the new scheme was introduced last year we have had over 130 people go through the Club Coach Course and over 30 through the Introductory Coach Course. New measures will be introduced setting Course dates for 2011 enabling candidates to apply for the course they wish to attend. The continued roll out of the Bowls Australia Coaching structure should take another step forward in the next few months with the release of the Advanced Coaching Course, as well as the Competition and Selection modules. The release date by BA will dictate when we conduct the first courses, however at this stage it is likely to be in early to mid 2011. The last Coaching Revision Day was a wonderful success, although disappointingly numbers were down on last time. Another Coaching Revision Day will be conducted before the end of the year, so keep an eye out in the Bowler and on the Bowls SA website for further information. These days are a fantastic opportunity for coaches to improve their knowledge and skills on a range of topics. The Coaching Committee also continues to meet on a monthly basis to discuss a number of issues relating to coaches. The Coaching Committee for 2010-11 is: Ron Mitchell (Chairman), Leon Crane, Brian Scarlett, Trevor Gregory, John Malone, Terry White, Geoff Ellis, and Staff members Kelli Wray and Paul Williams.

Active After-school in the Country

During May, 25 children from Wallaroo Primary School took part in a special Active After-school Communities (AASC) session organised by the Australian Sports Commission, with support from the Wallaroo Bowling Club and Wallaroo Primary School, and run by Bowls SA Development Officer and Australian Lawn Bowler Kelli Wray. Kelli was assisted by Wallaroo members and AASC Coaches Kevin Taylor and Margaret Kenchington along with a number of other local Club members keen to see the session in action. While Bowls was the motivation, the focus was fun and games with small bowls being used and activities with many different targets setup to challenge the participants. Students even participated in a specially designed game of football using lawn bowls to score goals and points. AASC Regional Coordinator Emily Donnell said the event provided a great opportunity for local coaches to receive on the job training in modified games as well as a great chance for participants to take part in a fun afternoon. The event was aimed at promoting ongoing participation in sport and professional development for local coaches and it was hoped that by trying lawn bowls activities, children may join a local club or the Yorke Peninsula Henselite Junior Development Squad and continue to be active in the sport. For more information about the AASC program visit www.ausport.gov.au or contact Bowls SA Development Manager Paul Williams on 8234 7544 or email development@bowlssa.com.au

Youngsters Shine

Emerging young bowler Danielle Fuss, who says watching her pop Headley Kluge play sparked her interest in the sport, was awarded the ‘Messenger Community News Female Individual Achievement Award’ for the Western region during May. After an impressive season on the greens Danielle finished with a host of titles, including Silver and Bronze medals from the U18 State Championships and was also a member of the women’s Pairs and Triples teams which represented SA at the Australian Open. These results reflect her dedication and determination on the green and with the support of her family, friends and coaches, this talented 15 year old is sure to continue to achieve great things.

Club Development

The Office for Recreation & Sport recently launched the STARCLUB – Club Development Program. The program is all about continuous improvement and ongoing development of Clubs. By measuring your Club against the STARCLUB criteria (a list of 25 questions) the Club is on the way to providing the best environment possible for members and the wider community. The program has been designed for use by sport and active recreation clubs of all sizes. Whether you consider your club is already a STARCLUB or has some work to do, Bowls SA is encouraging all Clubs to check out the program at: www.recsport.sa.gov.au/starclub All Clubs that go through the program will be recognised by the South Australian Government.
