May 2012 The 2011/12 Season is drawing to an end and it’s that time of the year when we celebrate what has been achieved and reflect on what may not have been. The best thing about sport is if some of our goals weren’t quite reached, there is always next week, or in this case next season! President Ivy and I have just returned from a two day Bowls Australia strategic planning workshop. The focus of the workshop was the development of a national plan for the sport over the next four years and what was evident was that for the sport to grow all stakeholders need to work together. We need to challenge and be innovative in the way that we approach certain objectives and the strategies we implement to achieve these goals. One of these is club membership. As we are all aware, traditional club membership has been consistently declining for a number of years. At the same time participation in the sport has been increasing with the latest figures showing that in South Australia there are over 36,000 participants, compared to the 17,000 registered members of bowling clubs. Our main focus has always been on our membership and this is obviously important for the sustainability of bowling clubs and State and Territory Associations. But the challenge for all of us is to embrace all ‘participants’ and ensure that their experience with the sport is a positive one. With this in mind, we need to consider that not everyone may want to become members, now or at anytime, but are happy to continue their current involvement with the sport. If this is the case, what we need to do is provide them with a positive experience and ensure that they continue their involvement, in whatever form that is. This could be simply as a customer of a bowling club where they have a meal and a drink at the bar. In time, they may take up playing social bowls or convert into a member. If not they are still contributing to the financial viability of the bowling club and will hopefully be telling their friends and acquaintances

about the welcoming sport of bowls. The challenge to us all is to ensure that we all work together to make every participant in the sport want to come back…and bring their friends. The feast of international bowls on offer in South Australia continues with the Six Nation International Series being held from May 15-20 at the Holdfast Bay Bowling Club. This is another opportunity to witness the world’s best bowlers in action in the lead-up to World Championships. With Scotland, New Zealand, Malaysia, Fiji and South Africa taking on the Aussies, it promises to be an exciting few days of competition. More information on the event is available on Page 12. The annual Bowls SA Awards Night is also, not far away and this year’s event will be held at the Festival Function Centre on Friday 25 May. The Awards Night has been revamped and a number of new awards will be presented this year with the night also including the next induction of members into the Bowls SA Hall of Fame. More information on the Awards Night is available on Page 10 and why not join in the festivities and get a table together to celebrate the end of another season and the achievements of your club mates. I look forward to seeing you there and enjoy the winter months…

Regards

Ben Scales General Manager

[PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE [ A

fter many hours of pressure and pleasure the Pennant season has reached it conclusion. Finals have been played and there’s the usual mixture of jubilation and disappointment. Congratulations to the winners, and if like me, your team was eliminated before the Finals, take heart that there’s always next year! A big thank you to everyone involved in the organisation of the pennant competitions throughout South Australia, your efforts are truly appreciated. With the exception of the Champion of Champion events all Bowls SA State events have now been played, trophies presented and records written. Congratulations to all the winners and runners-ups, thank you to the Clubs that provided their facilities and to the Event Managers, Umpires and Markers who ensured the events were again a great experience for participants. At Broadbeach Bowling Club on the Gold Coast, States and Territories have just finished battling it out in the Super 6s and Australian Sides Championships and despite the Eastern States demonstrating their supremacy, both South Australian teams performed well and did the state

proud. A full report is on Page 11. During the season I’ve had the opportunity of attending many presentation and awards functions, most recently the 100th Birthday celebrations for the Murray Bridge Bowling Club on April 21. For me, hearing the history of a Club is a highlight of the celebration and gives a wonderful insight into the great effort put in by early members in establishing the Club and ensuring its longevity. Back in those days a lot of manual labor was used, taking many weeks or sometimes months, to finish a project. Today we call in a mechanical operator with levellers and diggers and trucks to do the work in a few days. But I bet those that worked manually got just as much satisfaction out of their achievements. On a governance level, I’ve recently attended a meeting with Bowls Australia, along with representatives of all States and Territories, for the purpose of developing the next Bowls Australia Strategic Plan. I found the exercise of addressing future goals and plans to achieve a positive and sustainable future for our sport was interesting but also challenging.

Locally, the sport generally goes into recess at this time of year, however, processes continue for setting up for next season and reviewing ‘where to from here’. The election of members to the Board of Bowls SA will be addressed at the Bowls SA Annual General Meeting and it’s an opportune time for members to consider suitable candidates to take on these very important roles. The sport is fortunate in having a membership from a broad cross section of business backgrounds who can provide knowledge and experience for the benefit of the sport. Nominations will be called for in July; do you know someone that would be a suitable nominee? I trust the winter months will be an enjoyable and productive time for everyone and maybe even allow time to escape to see other parts of Australia or the world!

VOLUNTEER AWARDS HOWARD (ERIC) LEWIS

RAY FROST As a voluntary Greens Manager for the past 10 years Ray has saved the Moonta Memorial Bowling Club thousands of dollars in wages. With the greens also used for winter competition the role is continual throughout the year and Ray works with a team of around ten other volunteers encouraging and supervising them to ensure not only the greens but the surrounds, garden areas and walkways are immaculate, safe and accessible. Ray’s involvement in the Club is broader than just the greens and he has also given 10 years of continuous service to the Management Committee and was a member of the Planning Committee which oversaw the extension of the Clubrooms and upgrade of the surrounds in 2010. The Club has been the venue for some major events in the last 12 months, the Australia vs South Africa Test Series in 2011 and more recently the 2012 Men’s Prestige Medley. The ability to have greens that are of world class standard has put the Club on the map and an influx of interstate visitors wanting to play on their greens has been very beneficial for the Club and the local economy. Ray’s participation and ingenuity is commended and he is congratulated on being named as a Volunteer of the Month.

Eric has been a member of the Murray Bridge Bowling Club for 33 years. Since his retirement in 1995 and until his licence expired in 2008, Eric was instrumental in carrying out numerous electrical tasks within the Club. However, this is only one of many areas that he has freely given his time to the Club without any compensation other than the pleasure of doing so. Eric has, on a weekly basis for the past 12 years, also been responsible for the maintenance of the lawns and shrubs in the Club surrounds. This has meant rain, hail or shine Eric has seen to the spraying, weeding, fertilising and edging of the gardens and the result is an area that is always presented in immaculate condition and the envy of other Clubs. The Club and Members are grateful for Eric’s dedication and unerring commitment to the Club and acknowledge him as a worthy recipient of Volunteer of the Month. Ray and Eric will now join the previous four APIA Volunteer Award winners to be considered for the APIA Volunteer of the Year to be awarded at the Bowls SA Awards Night on May 25.

STATE TRIPLES

A

delaide’s Scott Thulborn took out his fourth State Event for the 2011/12 Season after overcoming Modbury’s Rhys Taylor by eight shots (23-15) in the Final of the State Triples at Lockleys Bowling Club. Partnered with his father Dave Thulborn and Brett Davis, Scott’s dream season continued having already been triumphant in the State Singles, Open Singles and State Pairs. In the Semi-final Thulborn was one shot ahead of Grange’s Wayne Ruediger and teammates Luke Pietersma and Simon Dorr going into the final end and with a further one shot on the final end recorded a 20 -18 score line and his place in the Final. In the other Semi, another close affair saw Taylor, Matt Nichols and Ben Harris also winning by a two shot margin 17 – 15, against the Berri triple of Graeme King, Andy Gapco and skip Andrew Hill. In the Final Taylor got away to an early 9 - 3 advantage, but Thulborn took the lead on the 12th end and scores remained close until Thulborn scored a three on the 19th to lead by four shots. On a roll, Thulborn grabbed another four shots on the 20th to seal the match 23 – 15 and the State Triples title for 2012.

In the women’s Final, Kensington/ Marryatville’s Jackie Gardiner teamed with Lyn Prosso and Renata Callisto to defeat Adelaide’s Sandra Wallace and Prospect-Broadview teammates Janet Cocks and Carol Prior, taking the title with a convincing 13 shot victory, 27-14. In the Semi-final Wallace led by a few shots from Prospect-Broadview’s Denise Caulfield, Jan Stringer and Cherie Morgan (Modbury) throughout the initial ends before shooting ahead from the 14th end to achieve a 23–16 victory. The results of the other Semi were not so assured when Jackie Gardiner trailed early, only taking the lead on the 11th end. The Yorketown three of Pauline McKinlay and Margaret Rogers, skippered by Maureen South however fought back to regain the lead on the 18th end. A determined Gardiner however picked up a six on the final three ends to win the match 21–18 and progress to the Final. In the Final, 2007-08 title holder Gardiner stormed to a 12-0 lead after only four ends, which included a six on the 2nd, and the match was virtually over. After 15 ends her lead had extended to 26 – 7 and although Wallace fought back to reduce the margin, the title was Gardiner’s with a 27–14 final score.

JAMES BODNAR TAKES CENTRE STAGE

James in action in WA; with his grandparents; and proudly wearing SA colours with teammate Brandon Whiley

I

n recent years there’s been an ever increasing number of juniors who have shown extraordinary talent for the game and gone on to achieve great things. One of these is James Bodnar who first played bowls at the age of 8 with his passion for the sport coming from playing alongside his father Jason and his grandad Rick at the former Adelaide Airport Bowling Club. While he enjoyed playing pennants, James decided to expand his options by joining the ‘Western Warriors’ Henselite Junior Development Squad in June 2010.

8

This was the start of his success. When competing in the State Junior Championships he was identified as a ‘future talent’, his presence on the green and mental toughness clearly advanced for his age. 2011 brought new opportunities with James continuing to play pennants for the newly merged Underdale Airport Bowling Club and being asked to join the State Under 18 Squad. After months of training with his skills continually developing, James now aged 13, achieved his dream when he got the call he had been waiting for - a place in

the U/18 Quad Series side to represent South Australia in Perth. This talented junior has developed many skills through membership of the Henslite Junior Development Squad Program, but also through the support of State U/18 Boys Coach Leon Crane. It is fair to say that juniors are a fairly recent addition to bowls, and with the right encouragement and mentoring many have shown extraordinary dedication and talent to achieve significant achievements and bring another level of interest to the game. Well done James. SA Bowler May 2012

MIXED PAIRS

C

lare Bowling Club’s Karen Baum and Brenton Brown have taken out the 2011/12 State Mixed Pairs title after defeating the highly fancied pairing of Jackie Gardiner and Simon Dorr in the Final at Brighton. Apart from an unexpected morning shower, conditions for the Semi-finalists were ideal. Partnered with his mum Chris, Scott Thulborn was vying for an unprecedented fifth Bowls SA State title for the season and the pressure was certainly on. However, Baum and Brown had other ideas and after six ends of the Semi-final they had a 9-3 lead. With the shower of rain came the Thulborn comeback as they rallied off the next six shots, but a subsequent five for the Clare pair undid all the good work of the Thulborn’s previous four ends. The consistency of Baum and Brown was the deciding factor, and with another five on the 15th end their place in the Final was secured with a comfortable 23-12 win. In the other Semi-final, defending champions Jocelyn Hastie and Jeff Aworth were doing battle on their home ground with the consistent performers Gardiner and Dorr of Kensington/ Marryatville.

SA Bowler May 2012

After six ends Gardiner and Dorr had a commanding 8-0 lead, however the standard of all four players ensured the sizeable crowd was enthralled and a four for Hastie and Aworth on the 12th end saw them back level on 10-all. While Aworth and Hastie edged ahead 13-10, Gardiner and Dorr countered to record a slender lead, 14-13, going into the final end which saw Aworth and Hastie record a single and force an extra end. Down on the head, with the last bowl to play, Dorr delivered the ultimate bowl to sit neatly within shot and claim the Semi from an unlucky Aworth and Hastie 15-14. The Final started with single shots before a four on the 4th end gave Brown and Baum a 5-2 lead. The margin remained at no more than four for the next few ends to see a 10-8 score line after 11 ends. Brown and Baum dashed off seven consecutive shots over the next four

Simon Dorr, Brenton Brown, Bowls SA Vice President Carol Boyle, Karen Baum and Jackie Gardiner ends to lead 17-9 and looked very comfortable. Gardiner and Dorr rallied but the Clare duo’s lead was too great and they claimed a 17-14 win and the 2011-12 Mixed Pairs title.

CELEBRATE GOOD TIMES...on! A

nother fantastic year of bowls is coming to a close and we have seen some outstanding achievements during the year worthy of celebration. Bowlers from all over the world descended on Adelaide for the Asia Pacific Championships, Scott Thulborn’s dream year winning four State titles and a Premier One Pennant, Heather Richards’ history making Country Carnival appearance and many more. And there is plenty more to continue celebrating for season 2012/13 with the World Championships coming to Lockleys and Holdfast Bay Bowling Clubs in November and December. What better way is there to celebrate these stellar events and performances than at the 2012 Bowls SA Awards Night? It doesn’t matter if the season wasn’t your greatest, or if you achieved your best performance on record or if you are just a supporter of the game, the Awards Night allows the community to come together, connect, celebrate and look towards a bigger and better season. This year Bowls SA is rolling out a new format which will allow guests to spend

more time enjoying the entertainment and atmosphere and mingling with fellow bowlers. The night will feature a selection of prestigious awards in which the announcement of the winners will be highly anticipated including State Event Player of the Year and State Representative of the Year. In addition to these awards a string of new awards will be presented and the night will also acknowledge the accomplishments of the State Event winners, Pennant winners and the year that was in 2011/12. Last year’s Awards Night saw the induction of the first members into the Bowls SA Hall of Fame, this year the next members will be inducted recognising the outstanding achievements of individuals who have shaped the sport of bowls in South Australia. To top off the night guests can kick off their shoes and let their hair down on the dance floor with the addition of a DJ into this year’s event to provide some entertainment for everyone to enjoy. The Awards Night will be held at a new location at the Festival Function Centre

State Night Owls winners, “The Raggies”; Bare foot fury, the competition heats up

he stranglehold of the Modbury Bowling Club over the State Night Owls competition continued when The Raggies took out the 2012 title at the Walkerville Bowling Club. In beautiful conditions, 10 teams from metropolitan Adelaide joined teams

from Whyalla, Ardrossan, Murray Bridge, Willunga and Encounter Bay in the three games of five ends concept. After two rounds, Lockleys team Bent Bowlers led the way, thanks to early 11 0 and 10 - 2 wins. However, the draw saw them up against

The Raggies in the final game with the winner guaranteed first spot. The Raggies took out the game 7 - 3 to claim the title, relegating Bent Bowlers to third place behind Murray Bridge’s Corkheads who were the only other team to have three wins on the day. They claimed second spot after they defeated the Hope Valley High Rollers 5 - 3 in the final game. Over the six qualifying events leading up to the State Final, 120 teams participated at nights held at Murray Bridge, Willunga, Lockleys, Marion and Hope Valley. The 2012 State Final was once again proudly supported by Henselite and Lion. The Walkerville Bowling Club, in their second year of hosting the State Final, did a fantastic job throughout the day. Bowls SA would like to thank President Ian Hall and his flock of volunteers for an excellent job. Thank you to the Clubs that supported the 2012 State Night Owls Finals and to those that weren’t part of this year’s event, we look forward to seeing you in 2013.

T

he 2011/12 Pennant season around South Australia once again offered up a range of unexpected results and some performances which saw clubs make history and many go back to back in competitions throughout the State. The following success stories are just some of those to come out of another season to remember. We hope that all bowlers enjoyed the year and we wish you a safe and healthy offseason. In a season that was extended to cater for the Asia Pacific Championships held at Lockleys and Holdfast Bay Bowling Clubs many competitions finished later than usual but most Finals were still played under cloudless skies and in warm weather. In the city, after the top four positions had changed on a regular basis, the Thursday Premier 1 Grand Final was again won by Prospect-Broadview which defeated old foe Modbury in a repeat of the previous season’s result. The Saturday Premier One Pennant went to an Adelaide side which won its first flag since 1998/99 and the playing group were justifiably ecstatic with the result. After gaining a spot in the Finals with a win in the last minor round game at Modbury the Blues needed to come from fourth spot to take the title. The playing group grabbed one shot wins against Ascot Park and Grange after an amazing day of Saturday Finals the day before taking out Marion by 11 shots in the Grand Final. In Premier Two South, Hawthorn had produced the goods for much of the season and went into the Grand Final against a crack Holdfast Bay outfit with quiet confidence. The playing group began well before winning by four shots and that victory carried the Hawks into the Premier One competition after one year back in the second tier. In Premier Two North Rosewater went into the Finals with a double chance and were undefeated in the series. After a great year a two shot Grand Final victory over Salisbury saw the club promoted to Premier One for the first time in

its history. They bowl under the name of the “Shrikers” and it is great to be able to welcome a new club into the elite competition. There were many outstanding performances over the year but few could match the achievements of Hamley Bridge who defeated Balaklava to record their eighth consecutive pennant win. A great performance indeed but it is worthwhile reflecting on McLaren Vale which won 17 out of 18 pennants in the 70’s and early 80’s. Two other performances of note come from a great group of guys from Wirrulla in the Saturday Pennant race, and a terrific band of ladies from Happy Valley in the Thursday Metro One South competition. In 2010/11 the close knit group from Happy Valley took out the Southern Association title after 27 years of trying. It was the last year for the Association and the girls began this season in foreign territory on the flat lands of Adelaide but the change of environment to Metro One South obviously mattered little as they grabbed the Pennant in their first season of the metropolitan competition. After 28 years they had won two Pennants and these were back to back. We are holding our breath as this group go into season 2012/13. We figure that they are getting better every day and anything can happen from here! Wirrulla is a small club on the Western Eyre Peninsula which boasts a mere 22 members and President Roger Kelsh was a proud man when I spoke to him about his team coming from third to grab the Pennant in 2011/12. He was pretty excited about the flag but said that it wasn’t a one off. In 2007/08 a similar selection came from fourth to achieve the same feat and he reckoned that was a pretty good effort. He also commented that the club was okay for players until harvest time when they struggled to get a team together. For interest the competition includes sides from Wudinna, Ceduna, Streaky Bay, Minnipa and Wirrulla, and Minnipa joins forces with the small club of Poochera to get enough bowlers to play SA Bowler May 2012

mannum Pennants. The clubs are not affiliated but the combined team did enough to finish eighth this year. Wudinna’s Peter Cock made the comment that when his club plays against Ceduna they leave at 9.30 in the morning, have lunch before the game and get home at 9.00 o’clock at night. And those in the city worry about travelling across town for a game! In the same region Streaky Bay’s women’s side won the Pennant beating Ceduna Gold in the Grand Final. On the Southern Yorke Peninsula, Minlaton decided to make season 2011/12 their own and went about winning both the Men’s and Women’s Pennants. The men took the flag for the second consecutive year and you can bet that the clubhouse was rocking and rolling after that performance. On the Northern Yorke Peninsula, Moonta took out the men’s title for the first time in six years beating Wallaroo handsomely in the Grand Final. Despite his home team’s loss Wallaroo’s Phil Spiers asked me to pass on that the Cory Wildash prepared greens at Wallaroo Mines were “A” Grade. From the Lower South East Bowling Association came news that powerhouse Mt Gambier RSL had grabbed its second successive title downing Port McDonnell in the Men’s Grand Final. However, the Port McDonnell women answered back with a Grand Final defeat of the RSL. A bit of tit for tat it seems! In the Great Southern competition the McLaren Vale Saturday side went back to back taking out the Grand Final against Victor Harbor Gold but it was close neighbour Willunga which had a season “out of the box” while creating its own bit of history. Willunga Bowling Club boasts less than 75 members but an influx of new talent during the off-season saw the club enter five teams into the Pennant

race. In a dream result the club picked up four flags and all four teams were promoted at the end of what was a great year. There was a lot of excitement on Presentation Night and the following comments came after a celebration to remember; “A happy group partied well into the night. There were some pretty happy sponsors on board and the clubhouse microphone is yet to recover from the numerous presentations, jokes, speeches and funny stories.” In the Lower Murray, Mannum took all three Saturday teams and both mid-week sides into the Finals. In the final analysis it was only the 1st Division Women and the 1st Division Saturday group that got up but there would have been some hearts pumping as it was their first title for 20 years. Presentation night was set for the 31 March and the following comments came from a club spokesperson. “The 1st Division players were late getting to the dinner after their win but this was of no great concern, celebrations were the order of the evening.” With the clubhouse perched on the banks of the Murray River one can imagine the Pelicans ducking for cover as members partied well into the night. In season 2011/12 the women from the Eyre Peninsula grabbed their first Country Round Robin Flag for 17 years so you can bet that the Pennant competitions around the area were of a high standard. For the record, in the Grand Final of the EEPWBA, the girls from Kimba ended the season with an emphatic Grand Final win against Cowell. For many clubs home Pennant games this season were played on newly laid surfaces and Payneham, Victor Harbor, Clarendon and Wallaroo are some that come into that category. On the Copper Coast the new facilities at Wallaroo offered undercover Pennant conditions for the first time and such an enterprise may well have offered us a glimpse into what the future holds for bowlers and clubs in our State.

The record books had to wait until Tuesday 24 April, when Marshall and Richards eventually got an opportunity to do battle with Crystal Brook’s Agnes Dhu and Wilma Hendry in the Pairs Final at the Lockleys Bowling Club. In cold and wintry conditions, it was Hendry and Dhu that got away to a flying start, leading 7-0 after five ends before Marshall and Richards managed to get on the board. The Crystal Brook pair continued leading all the way until the 11th end when Marshall and Richards struck, claiming a six and then a two on the 12th to take a four shot lead to 14-10. Hendry and Dhu then fired back with four over the next two ends to square the ledger to make for a heart stopping final end. In true form Marshall and Richards claimed a two, the 2011-12 title and a record clean sweep of the three Country Carnival events. This was an enormous Pairs final and a credit to all players, but even greater for Richards, as she can now claim four Pairs titles after previous victories in 2006/07, 2008/09 and 2009/10, partnering Marshall since 2008.

60 AND OVER’S

COMPETITION IS BACK

B

owls SA has pleasure in announcing the return of a 60 and Over’s competition in South Australia in season 2012/13. Bowls SA will also enter a team into the National 60 and Over competition to be played later this year. Feedback from members has shown strong support for the return of this level of competition to the Bowls SA calendar. Bluesky Healthcare, South Australia’s leading supplier in mobility equipment has come on board as a major partner. For over 10 years Bluesky Healthcare has been committed to ensuring every Australian can maintain an independent lifestyle regardless of injury or illness. Bluesky Healthcare offer a range of high quality customisable scooters, adjustable beds, lift and recliner chairs, stairlifts and platform lifts to assist with any daily mobility challenges. Every Bluesky Healthcare customer receives a free personalised mobility assessment to ensure the right product is matched to their lifestyle plus a free in-home demonstration. Bluesky have two locations, one in WA and one in SA, and they are committed to supporting bowls members, in both States, to continue a healthy, active lifestyle through their sponsorship of the 60 and Over events. The 60 and Over National competition will be played at Queanbeyan Bowling Club in NSW from October 14 to 19, 2012. Bowls SA will be entering a men’s

and women’s State team into the national event and will be looking for expressions of interest from players (aged 60 and over of course) to compete in the event. For those that love a strong competitive competition this is a great opportunity to represent your State. Bowls SA will be looking for players who have, or are still playing, at a high level of competition, including State representation, or top level pennants. It is important to note that some costs associated with participation in the National event will be the responsibility of each selected player. Once all expressions of interest are received, candidates will be invited to undertake a trial process to select the team members. For those who still enjoy a spirited game of bowls but would prefer to play with and against fellow bowlers in a more social environment rather than at elite level, Bowls SA will run a 60 and Over competition along the lines of existing State events. More information on the local and National events will become available over the next few months, including details on submitting an expression of interest. Bowls SA will keep you posted through your member Club or on the Bowls SA website www.bowlssa.com. au and we appreciate the support of Bluesky Healthcare with this intiative.

EXTRAVAGANZA! PRESTIGE MEDLEY With Yorke Peninsula putting on its finest autumn weather and the Men’s and Women’s Prestige Medleys being held simultaneously for the first time, all the elements were there to make the March long weekend a spectacle of bowls for competitors, officials, their families, friends and spectators who descended on the picturesque Copper Coast. Divided into two Sections of six Regions, all 12 Regions battled it out on the Saturday and Sunday for the $6,000 Prestige Medley prize money and the opportunity to secure the Kluske/Rogers Shields in a 9-a-side competition involving Pairs, Triples and Fours. With the total prize money allocated to 1st, 2nd, 3rd and the best overall score in the remaining play off between 5th and 12th everyone was in with a chance to earn a piece of the prize pool.

However, the Fleurieu & KI side, top placed in Section B, had other ideas, relegating the Yorke

The Women’s Prestige Medley was played across two venues, the Kadina and Wallaroo Mines Bowling Clubs and after sectional play it was set to be an all metro play off for 1st and 2nd. SCHROETER, KENNEDY AND UNDER 18 SHIELDS On Monday, selected country and metro sides took on the challenge for the annual Schroeter, Kennedy and Under 18 Shield events at the fantastic new Wallaroo Sports and Community Club. With the Schroeter and Kennedy Shields both having had permanent residence in the city since 2006 the country sides went out determined to reclaim the titles. However, despite the country putting up a strong fight metro skips Max Kleinig and Scott Thulborn lead their rinks to huge afternoon wins to get the metropolitan men over the line 87-51 to take the Schroeter Shield 154-121, while in the Kennedy Shield, Katrina Miller bounced back from a morning loss to defeat Shirley Koch 27-7 and see the metropolitan women win the afternoon session 88-55 to claim the Kennedy Shield 154-118. The closest encounter of the day saw the metropolitan Under 18s win their afternoon session 82-63 to turn a seven shot deficit into a 152-140 win over the country Under 18s; Breeanna Dickson’s 25-9 Singles win the difference between the sides. So with a clean sweep and all three titles returning to the city, the country will be looking to reverse the results next year. For the influx of players and visitors the close proximity of the venue clubs, Moonta, Wallaroo Mines, Kadina and Wallaroo Sports and Community Club, and the other Yorke Peninsula attractions added to the great holiday atmosphere and an exceptional weekend. The District Council of the Copper Coast has invested significantly into the sport’s infrastructure in the local area and many thanks to Mayor Paul Thomas and the Council for their support of the event.

[DEVELOPMENT [ HJDS STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS FINAL On Sunday April 1, the first Henselite Junior Development Squad State Championship finals took place in fantastic conditions at Modbury. Over the last six months the Squads have played off in their regions to determine the qualifiers for the final day; the successful squads being Yorke Peninsula All-Stars, Lower North Hi-Jackers, Eastern Jets and the Fleurieu Falcons. The Pairs and Triples scores were combined to establish the winners of the Semi-finals, 3rd and 4th playoff and Final. The outcome of the last few ends on the Pairs match were crucial in determining the winner of the Final and the Yorke Peninsula All-Stars were able to hold on against the Eastern Jets to secure the trophy. Congratulations to the Yorke Peninsula All-Stars Team comprising Connor Brown, Rhylan Stevens, Jack Ryan, Jayden Zeller and Jake Cook for winning the inaugural Henselite Junior Development Squad State Championship. Thanks must go to the Squad Co-ordinators, Coaches and parents who helped make the day and the overall competition a success, as well as Modbury Bowling Club for hosting the event.

[COACHING CORNER[ Stinger’s

Bowls is one of only a few sports where the skills required allow total equality. Males and females, the young and the not so young, and people from culturally diverse backgrounds, can all play against each other and have no physical advantage, and people with a broad range of disabilities are still able to play; making bowls a totally inclusive sport. Compared to other mainstream sports, this is quite rare. You’re not likely to see a mixed gender Australian Football League team anytime soon as the physical aspect would disadvantage most females.

MONTHLY DRILL

In today’s world multiculturalism is becoming more and more a way of life and sport can offer a common goal that brings people from different cultures and backgrounds together. As stakeholders in our sport we can all be a catalyst in bringing multiculturalism into lawn bowls not only to promote the sport but also to enhance participation numbers at the Club.

Many cultures have strong attitudes towards school work, employment, chores around the house and family time, which may prevent them from initially considering sport. Clubs may consider: • Contacting a church or community centre to organise an open day at the Club, where their members meet with Club members, share food and an introductory game of bowls. • The majority of schools now have children from diverse cultural backgrounds and conducting school clinics is a great way to showcase the sport to all students and ultimately attract new members. • Organise a Multicultural Day for new bowlers and promote to the community groups, churches and other centres in your local area. These are just some suggestions which could potentially gain new members but also be seen as welcoming people into the local community. Language is

no barrier in this sport, so why not try something different! As a Coach what would you do if a new bowler walked into the Club and could not speak English? Addressing a language barrier offers a great opportunity to expand your own skills. These a few simple things that you can do: • Make it visual • Keep it simple • Think like you were in their shoes • If available include an interpreter (which may be their friend) • Remember that there are many ways of communicating, so even if someone has limited English they can still join in • Make it fun! It may be trial and error but by trying different techniques you will learn which ones suit them and you’ll be amazed what you, as a Coach, will learn in the process!

DRAWING TO OFF CENTRE JACKS Skill: Draw to three off centre jacks Objective: To draw within a mat length of Cone One, then Cone Two and finally draw to Cone Three. Once you do this, your fourth bowl must draw to the centre line. If you achieve this with your four bowls it is called ‘Centred End’. If you miss the first cone with your first bowl, you cannot get ‘Centred End’. You must continue to draw to the first cone until you get it, to be able to move on. Start at the first cone again for each new end. After 10 ends if you can get one ‘Centred End’ you have achieved the drill. As you get better at the drill, aim for a higher number of ‘Centred Ends’ Points: • 6 points – For a ‘Centred End’ • 0 Points- For not getting a ‘Centred End’

REGION 8 ASSOCIATIONS CELEBRATE

Hutt & Hill River WBA past and present members

F

ollowing a restructure, the 2012-13 season will see the members of the Hutt & Hill River and Northern Light Women’s Bowling Associations playing in the Broughton Women’s Bowling Section of the newly formed Broughton, Mid-North, and Wooroora Bowling Association and both Associations recently celebrated the history of their Associations. Hutt & Hill River Women’s Bowling Association A celebration at Snowtown on 8 March 2012 saw the gathering of most of the players of the current Hutt & Hill River Women’s Bowling Association to mark the closing of the Association, formed in 1955, almost 57 years ago. The Association included Blyth, Brinkworth, Clare, Koolunga, Mundoora, Redhill,

Past and present players of NLWBA who celebrated the occasion.

Snowtown and Yacka and a group photo was taken as a historic record of the current and past members attending. A minutes silence acknowledged the departed bowlers who had been the foundation of the Association in the past and presentations were made to the winners and runners-up of the Association’s Championships. A brief history, some humorous anecdotes and reminiscences made for a fitting wind up and everyone in attendance was given a Hutt & Hill River badge as a memento of the historic occasion. Northern Light Women’s Bowling Association A fun day of bowls was played at Saddleworth to commemorate the wind-up of the Northern Light Women’s Bowling Association. The Association

was formed in 1955 and consisted of clubs from Eudunda, Freeling, Kapunda, Marrabel, Riverton, Saddleworth, and Tarlee. Freeling Club transferred to Barossa & Light Association in 1963, and Marrabel Club went into recess in 1970, and Robertstown were accepted into the association in the same year. In 1973 Watervale joined the Association and by 1978 there were 211 registered players. Kapunda transferred to Barossa & Light in 1980 and Mintaro were admitted in 1996. Burra, Booborowie, Hallett, and Spalding joined in 2005 when their Association altered, and Eudunda transferred to Barossa & Light. The Association closes with 15 sides and 139 registered players.

REGION 5 Mothers and daughters Janette Haarsma and Liz Mickan have joined to make a formidable mother and daughter force in the Region. Liz has only been bowling for two years whereas Janette has been well known on the green for 30 years, winning a host of events and serving as Cummins Club President for two terms. In what turned out to be a mother and daughter contest, Janette and Liz played focused bowls to take the Cummins Championship Pairs title from mother and daughter Margaret Carr and Helen Minhard. Margaret has been bowling for 26 years and says she is fortunate to have had an enjoyable and productive career, but to be able to play competition bowls with her daughter is very special and will be treasured forever. Helen has an impressive record despite her relatively short membership and has paired with her mum Margaret in the Club Championship Pairs in each of the five years that she’s been bowling. However, she agreed that being pitted against another mother and daughter combination was a thrill and a unique experience. Congratulations to Janette and Liz who went on to win the Freeman Pairs at Ceduna.

REGION 6 Betty Fechner Betty Fechner is a foundation member of the Hills Women’s Bowling Association, formed in 1959, and at that time she commenced her bowling career with the Woodside Women’s Bowling Club, later moving to Mt Pleasant and then Lobethal where she is still an active member. Now after over 53 of consecutive

years of membership of the HWBA, Betty was presented with a Certificate to acknowledge her service and to recognise her contribution and success on the green.

REGION 8 Region News The Hutt & Hill River, Northern Light and Wooroora Women’s Associations held their annual Inter-Associations match with Wooroora once again taking home the shield. The men’s annual Inter-Regional, usually held the day before the Prestige Medley as a ‘warm-up’, was held at Port Pirie with Regions 2, 3, 5 and 8 competing for a number of shields. The men’s Inter-Association match between Broughton, Mid North, Wooroora and Barossa & Light was played at Lyndoch and perhaps the home ground advantage was the clue to Barossa & Light taking the title for 2012. The sudden loss of young and enthusiastic Riverton bowler Jason McMillan in a car accident was a shock to the Region. Jason loved his bowls and had been selected for the 2012 Country Round Robin side. He is sadly missed by his family, friends and the bowling fraternity. Region Councillors have presented Super Veteran badges to six 80 year olds and five members Carl Jaeschke, Bob Disher, Eddie Pearce, Barbara Howell and Les Bradock, have received their Bowls SA 90 year old Certificates. The Aaron Kimpton Memorial Tournament was well attended. Aaron died in a car accident four years ago, aged 19, and his parents asked the club to hold this Memorial Day in honour of Aaron who loved his bowls after having started playing with his grandmother. Apart from these activities, the history

making one has taken a great deal of time and energy is the daring decision to form only one Association within Region 8 and the current Associations will become Sections within the Broughton, Mid-North, Wooroora Bowling Association. A Special General Meeting has been held to start the process and the inaugural Annual General Meeting will be held in May. Robertstown Evelyn Ross, affectionately known as ‘Bubs’, celebrated her 90th Birthday. Always a keen bowler, Evelyn has continued on her winning way taking out the Robertstown’s Club Women’s Singles Championship title for 2012, which then led to her competing in the Northern Light Women’s Bowling Association Championship where she played seven games over two days. In honour of ‘Bubs’ special birthday, Region Councillor Jill Ackland presented her with a Bowls SA 90 year Certificate.

REGION 9 Gawler The Gawler Invitation Medley or ‘Hilly’s Day’ as it is affectionately known, has been running for approximately 14 years now and always attracts a big turnout. This year was no exception when 168 players from 37 Clubs from across the State took advantage of the Club’s hospitality on and off the green. The day was also well supported by long term sponsors who all attended and joined players at lunch. Played as a ‘Fours, Pairs, Fours’ combination, at the end of the day the winning Four were Harry Sykes, Jim Brydson, Justin Morris (Freeling) with Glyn Ayres (Lyndoch) from runners-up Bernie Mullins (Prospect-Broadview), and Bill Stirling, Brenton Treverton and Neil Martin of Modbury. SA Bowler May 2012

The Club is infused with energy and enthusiasm following this success and very keen to hold similar nights again in the future.

Harry Sykes, Jim Brydson, Glyn Ayres and Justin Morris with John Hill (‘Hilly’)

REGION 10 Trinity Gardens Trinity Gardens Bowling Club’s inaugural Corporate Night was an outstanding success when representatives from local businesses came together for a night primarily about having fun and ‘having a go at something different on a Friday night’. The night began with a free sausage sizzle followed by coaching by Club members then 22 teams took to the green with the number of young people having a go quite impressive. Bowls Australia Community Development Officer Mark Easton facilitated the planning and implementation of the night with CDO Richard Law’s assistance. Steven Marshall MP, South Australia State Member for Norwood attended along with Simon Apostolidis, Administrator, Human Rights Centre, Mitcham and members of the Mimilli Indigineous Community from the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands.

10

Ilyas Badalyan, Justin Umali, Audrey Umali, Steve Marshall (MP), Debra Smith and Simon Apostolidis During supper, the raffle was drawn; a trophy and prizes were presented to the winners and ‘wooden spooners’ to wind up a most enjoyable night. SA Bowler May 2012

Payneham The Payneham Bowling Club dedicated their Gala Day in March to Daphne Cooper who celebrated her 90th birthday and was presented with a Bowls SA Certificate to mark the occasion. Daph has been a valued and respected member of the Club who has been committed to the game during the last 40 years. Up until this season she continued to skip and the Club and fellow bowlers wish her many more years on and off the green.

Daphne Cooper Hawthorn The 6th annual Community CPS Australia ProAm was conducted on Adelaide Cup Day, at Hawthorn Bowling Club in perfect Adelaide Autumn weather. The greens were full with pennant bowlers (“Pros”) in club uniforms and enthusiastic non-pennant bowlers (“Ams”) in an array of casual sports attire. The annual ProAm is a unique competition with each team consisting of 2 Pros and 2 Ams, male or female, young or old. To establish the eight lucky finalists, the full-house of 34 teams played two games of Fours and two games of Pairs. Teams not making the final eight then battled it out for the Plate which was won by a Freeling team of Ams, Shaun Pancione and John Pancione and Pros, Robert Ratsche and Fred Hines. After a magnificent meal and wines,

the finalists played a knock-out series of four ends per game. To keep the game moving briskly, if the two teams were equal after the four ends, a single bowl, ditch to ditch, sudden death shoot-out was to be fought out by the two leads. Unfortunately this didn’t happen this year (last year we had two sudden death shoot-outs); the Skips love the concept of shifting the pressure onto the Leads! The Grand Final was fought out between teams from Adelaide (Skipped by Chris Chrisakis) and Modbury (Skipped by Shane Marslen) with Chris’ team successful. Onlookers were enthralled by the quality of the bowls put down by the four Ams during the finals games and to ensure there were no “smokies” each Am had been required to sign a declaration confirming their “Am” status prior to the commencement of the first game. Dean Stewart, Manager, Community CPS Australia, presented minor prizes to each member of the two unsuccessful Semi finalists and Shane’s runners-up. Dean then presented the $1,000 prize money to the winning team made up of John Thomson and Arnold Fraser (Ams) and Mark Massotti and Chris Chrisakis (Pros). And while this was all happening Rialya beat Drunken Sailor to win the 2012 Adelaide Cup.

[UNBIASED OPINION[

RIGHTS and WRONGS

I

f you have ever been in a motor vehicle collision and suffered a life changing injury then you are going to understand what follows better than most. Recently the South Australian Treasurer released a Green Paper as to the workings of the Compulsory Third Party Insurance Scheme in this State. The discussion paper is the first step in the process of reviewing the current system. All South Australians, when they register their car, are paying for insurance in the event that they are injured in a motor vehicle collision through the fault of another driver. If no one is at fault in a collision, such as perhaps running into a tree whilst encountering a bend and you are the driver of the vehicle, then the CTP Scheme does not provide you with any security or protection. You are, in those circumstances at the behest of the current safety net that exists for all Australians through the welfare system. It does not take long to realise that the safety net and welfare systems of Australian States and federally require review and change. That is why the Federal Government instituted the Productivity Commission to investigate the disability systems in Australia and coincidentally to that, the Injury Insurance Schemes throughout Australia. Bill Shorten, the Federal Minister, is very keen for some runs on the board regarding the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and the National Injury Insurance Scheme (NilS), as is the Federal Minister for Disability, Jenny Macklin.

28

ANTHONY KERIN Johnston Withers

ANTHONY KERIN | Johnston Withers

The political scene is vast in the area of injury and disability and there are a number of different government perspectives throughout Australia in relation to it. The proposed National Scheme is a long way from being national at this stage. There is no imperative to change the CTP Scheme in South Australia at this time particularly if the framework of the NDIS is not yet known or the framework of the NilS. What is proposed by the Green Paper is a vast change to the rights of those injured in motor vehicle collisions. Under the proposed changes you would have to set up another bureaucracy to run what is called a ‘No Fault Scheme’ but which in essence is not one. There are a number of exclusions referred to in the Green Paper such as if you were intoxicated at the time you had a collision and suffered significant injury. The treatment of catastrophic injuries - spinal, brain injury and the like, is worthy of review but only if those injured still have the right to choose between their common law rights an alternative financial viable scheme. The Green Paper suggests a number of scenarios which will mean the eradication of damages claims for a large majority of people who the government considers are injured in a minor way with “minor injuries”. What is minor is a very subjective matter. The damages for minor claims, (those up to $50,000 have been mentioned) are essentially given away apart from some medical expenses for the funding of more serious injuries. The infrastructure and bureaucracy necessary to run such a scheme is also a concern. One only has to look at our other no fault scheme in South Australia to see how costly and cumbersome that is and I am talking about Workcover. Submissions are due by 27 April 2012 and by the time this goes to print the Treasurer will be busy reading about the effect that these changes will have. My concern is that a lot of people do not really know what they would be giving away if they agreed with such a scheme. You only really know about it if you have been in a motor vehicle collision and suffered an injury through the fault of another. The common law rights exist to ensure that appropriate and adequate compensation is provided to those who are injured. But it also exists for other

reasons such as to modify and regulate behaviour. No fault systems tend to detract from accountability because there is much less incentive to be careful. Significant sums of money are spent on education and advertising campaigns every year in the motor vehicle context in an attempt to influence behaviour to reduce collisions and thereby avoid having to pay damages to the injured. Another purpose is to ensure those who suffer have a sense of obtaining justice. The fund is financially sound. Those are the words used by the Chairman of the Motor Accident Commission in the 2011 Annual Report. Reviewing the system to create greater efficiencies is a commendable aim. Taking away the rights of many is not an appropriate change to the current system. The system currently exists to right wrongs and provide fair compensation to those who suffer. It is not a lottery. It is a system based on well defined principles. Fault based systems are a hallmark of the rule of law in a civil society. Providing other systems for those who suffer injury and cannot access the common law justice system is another task as a community that we should undertake. The taking away of rights that currently exist is not the way to go about it. Let us hope that the concept of fair compensation is not lost in the rush to implement change for the sake of political imperatives and forthcoming elections. If it does, then it would be a brave new world for those injured in motor vehicle collisions. Unless it is a significant injury (whatever that might mean) compensation rights are going to be greatly diminished. Once lost, they will not be returned. The journey on this issue is just beginning. Think about it the next time you’re in your car and driving to the next bowls tournament. These issues will affect all South Australians who use motor vehicles.
