Rohn Residence

Kitchen Remodel

The Rohn Residence project is a unique challenge, with the room’s interesting angles, entryway, and doorways within the space set the limits of how to utilize the space. The Rohn’s goal for the space was to create two sides, one for Mr. Rohn’s catering business and the other for Mrs. Rohn baking hobby.

When first designing their kitchen, the Rohn’s wanted to see a two toned kitchen with the classic white cabinets around the perimeter with a wood stained island to separate the two sides. Even though they desired their own sides they didn’t want the island to interfere with accessing the sink or oven range so the island was shortened to allow easier flow between the appliances.

Boyd Residence

Kitchen Remodel

The Boyd’s Residence project includes utilizing the closet in the entryway, the storage closet that shares the kitchen wall, and extending the kitchen area and island. The goal was to create a kitchen and pantry that would keep up with their growing family and be a space that the family can gather together.

When designing the spaces, the first thing that Mrs. Boyd desired was to have two dishwashers, one in the kitchen and one in the pantry, to keep up with her large family gatherings. Also a large island that would house the microwave, trash pullout, and mixer pullout.

Brown Residence

Kitchen and Bathrooms New Build

The Brown’s Residence project is the first project that was for a new build construction of a barndominium. With this new home being three hours away, visiting the site often wasn’t doable so relying on the contractor for measurements and answers to their drawings through tele-communication were a learning curve in the cabinet design side.

The Brown’s goal for the kitchen was to have an island that could seat up to 12 people around it. They wanted open shelving over upper cabinets and for the pantry door to look like the surrounding cabinets.

For the bathrooms, there were six bathrooms, one linen, one master, two connected to bedrooms, and two upstairs bathrooms. One of the bathrooms that is connected to a bedroom was designed for Mrs. Brown’s mother who uses a wheelchair. Eliminating the cabinet under the sink, and lowering the height a few inches to give her more ease within the space.

Wilcox Residence

Kitchen Remodel

The Wilcox’s Residence project includes a fun pop of color with Slate Tile blue cabinets. The couple came in wanting to remodel their kitchen as their current kitchen was not functional and they decided it was time to change that.

There isn’t an abundance of space to expand the kitchen so focusing on making this L-shape layout be user friendly was the main goal of the project. Mrs. Wilcox wanted to keep the top of the cabinets roughly a foot from the ceiling to allow her to display her Christmas decor and pottery.

Varner Hall, the University of Nebraska’s Office of the President, faced several issues during a basement bathroom remodel before a Board of Regents meeting. Problems included a water leak, insufficient materials, and a shortage of manpower. To manage the workload, a second general contractor was added. Additionally, a new counter top material was chosen last minute due to a shortage from the vendor. Finally, finishing touches included painting door frames and access panels with a similar paint color.

A remodel from two unused offices into a new study space for students required site verification, and drawings to make the clients goals come true. Coordinating with the GC and the client to ensure that CMU demolition happened before classes started up again.

Capstone Project

Return2Center

Kat Pickering, Spring 2024

This project’s goal is to create a community sports hub that provides a physical location for the residents of Lincoln to gather for a sense of community as the world recovers from the pandemic. It aims to address the need for a place for people to physically socialize and reconnect within a safe environment. The project will give users the opportunity to shop, play, and watch sports in one location. Also the community sports hub will assist in the restoration of the downtown area by bringing the population back to the sidewalks.

Dairy Exploration Center

Nate Bicak and Steve Hardy, Fall 2023

Design Team Members that included:

Alex Gallegos, Madison Hodge, Sable Lambley, Isabel Robb, Evan Robinson. The project splits into four distinct buildings, under one roof, with each having a core and a shell wrap of pre-cast concrete that contrasts the wood plank deck. Located on 84th and Havelock Street this Dairy Exploration Center is a look into agritourism and the potential project for the University of Nebraska.

Office to Residential

The goal of this project was to create a stable environment for residents ranging from the homeless to lowermiddle-class workers like nurses and teachers. It features bed pods for a sense of permanence, floor-to-ceiling windows for openness and safety, and softer materials like curved walls and drapery to balance the cool concrete flooring. The project re-purposes a vacant office buildings into affordable housing to address rising living costs, including custom-designed bed pods, a desk-bench-bookshelf setup, and a versatile career service center. The center connects to the residential units through cohesive design elements and offers spaces for collaboration, advisor meetings, a flexible classroom, individual computer pods, and a study area.

Mixed Use Remodel

The intention of this remodel is to focus on creating a space for the community to access a secure and self-sufficient food system. The space will provide a gathering place for collaborating and marketing on a smaller level, that will help grow a stronger community. To do so the existing columns were used to form a grid that will generate a mirrored layout for the programs to follow.

Resin Tiles

Finalist for BVH Scholarship

This custom material was driven by the idea of bringing a visual aspect of produce throughout the building. This is achieved by encasing dehydrated leafy greens in resin to make tiles. These leafy greens would be grown in the hydroponic system and the tiles would be placed within the computer nook and on the partition wall in front of the server’s counter.

Nate Bicak, Fall 2022

Wood Project - A 32” 2 x 4 wood plank was cut down into blocks and connected by wire to create a collapsible curtain wall that can provide privacy by obstructing the view into the adjacent space.

Acrylic Project - A 24” x 18” acrylic sheet was laser cut down to hexagons with small slots into the edges to create a light shade. 400 grit sandpaper to give it the clouded look.

Metal Project - An existing piece of artwork was deconstructed from a 18” x 18” metal square. Each rectangle was manipulated with different tools and equipment in the metal shop and then tack welded back onto the square base to be used as a window cover.

Portable Classroom

Seed to Plate - Kendra Ordia, Fall 2022

The goal of this portable classroom is to provide agriculture and nutrition knowledge to the Clinton Elementary school and to create a safe environment for the surrounding community to help plant and manage a community garden. With access to the fresh produce, students will be able to learn and be exposed to the produces’ healthy benefits. Overall, this portable classroom gives students access to a garden that will teach them about agriculture all while supplying fresh produce to teach about culturally nutritious cooking.

Rome Spa House

Soak. Steam. Dream. - Nate Bicak, Spring 2022

This revamped spa house was driven by circulation as a key factor in the design decisions through the aperture, materiality, and way-finding. The apertures band around the exterior and highlight key circulation paths or changes in program. The two floor materials create a path for guests to follow from program to program. The way-finding helps guide users throughout the space by following the turquoise colored band.
