Understanding Urban Planning

Urban Planning Studio: Michael Luegering Spring 2021

As I embarked on my exploration of the fascinating field of planning, Albemarle County emerged as a pivotal study area to investigate the intricate patterns that shape the built environment. Our analysis sought to unravel the enigmatic factors that animate urban landscapes.

To achieve this, I meticulously collected and analyzed data from various sources, including the city’s zoning, land use, and FEMA flood zone GIS database. This rigorous approach enabled a comprehensive understanding of the complex dynamics that define the urban fabric.

Our study revealed a captivating transformation of the city, as it evolved from a tranquil rural town into a vibrant urban metropolis. The metamorphosis of Albemarle County’s landscape provided a compelling glimpse into the multifarious factors that drive urbanization, and the implications for sustainable growth and development.

Studying Sustainability

Study Abroad: United Kingdom - Jennifer Roe

Spring 2022

Embarking on a transformative journey, the study abroad program dissected the pulse of health urbanism and sustainable urban development across London, Sheffield, and Edinburgh (UK). The immersive experience exposed us to diverse methodologies and practices in fostering urban wellness. Our exploration was grounded in Professor Jennifer Roe’s trailblazing work, Restorative Cities, where we delved into the seven pivotal pillars of restorative urbanism, aimed at nurturing mental, physical, and social well-being.

Our case study examines Pancras Square, a public site near St. Pancras International railway station in London. Using the seven pillars of restorative urbanism, we conducted a health audit to evaluate the site’s potential for urban regeneration and well-being enhancement. The audit considered factors such as location, sensory stimuli, and restorativeness

Architectural Foundations

ARCH 1030: Jaime Sanz Haro Spring 2020

My foundational work aimed to challenge the conventional modes of thinking about design and foster an abstract perspective of the world. By engaging in various design media, I was able to delve into the intricate interplay between space and form.

My foray into architecture kindled my ardor for designing cities that could cater to the needs of underprivileged communities, enhance the environment, and safeguard existing cultures. The field of urban planning presented an avenue to collaborate with communities and effect enduring transformations in the world that resonates with my aspirations.
